@Freekles1245 Huh, he told me it was official. He was comparing it to every other animated show he'd seen as he grew up and complaining that the voices were not only bad actors, but bad choices...
btw, i really hope they don't mess up it Fluttershy's voice e_e, and i think i'm not even gonna watch it because i prefer the original job such as English language ^.^
@NinesTempest Well, they´re not bad actors, really, but they dubbed the wrong characters. I´m confused. As far as I know, a dub is only official if the show is going to TV, or DVD. We don´t get any of these here so far, so I assumed it was fandub. Correct me if i´m wrong.
SERIOUSLY BELIEVE ME. These suck. Seriously. The voice actor of Spike is the same who does "Misty" in pokemon finnish dubs. I showed this to my friend and she suggeested harakiri on this.
IMO it's not that bad. Sure, the voices sound all the same and there's not much soul but they do the job. Basic morning cartoon dub. I kinda like the opening.
This is the first time I wished I didn't understand Finnish at all! This gave me a massive headache... The same voices... In every show... It's like there are only 5 voice actors in this entire country! What the fuck!
Oh, Celestia... These. SUCK. Honestly, they are VERY nearly as stupid and bad as the original My Little Pony dubs. Especially the random translated terms (Equestria = Ratsunia?!) are just... horrible.
The only good dubs, it seems, are still for Ducktales and Biker Mice only. FiM doesn't join them :( .
Ps. It also seems that these are leaked or something. They have Finnish dubs, yet the texts are in Swedish. I've also never noticed FiM coming from any channel yet (though I don't really watch tv anymore...).
It's not THAT bad. I mean, I can't understand a word they're saying, but it doesn't SEEM that bad. The voices are pretty similar, but really, give em some slack.
Hmmm in my opinion that honestly wasn't all that bad, or perhaps my expectations were simply set far lower than I'd realized. With the exception of the opening at least, in which case "terrible" is a bit of an understatement I'm afraid...
Fluttershy's and especially Pinkie's voices didn't quite seem to fit, though. And I confess I lost it a little at "Brown Betty!" (second half). Heheh..
I clicked play on the first vid. As soon as Applejack spoke, I couldn't bear it and stopped. I don't want these voices to replace the original ones in my head by any bizarre mistake.
As I said before, it definetely could be worse than what this is. It's by no means as bad as Agapio Racing Team dubs (the team known for some of the worst dubs in here, most notably Digimon) but still it could be worse. The casting could've been planned out a little better, but oh well, it's somewhere in there in the average dubs, or below.
First off, it felt rather weird that they translated names here and there, and left most of them untranslated. Like partially translating Big Macintosh as Iso Macintosh, Canterlot as Laukkapori (Pori is a city in Finland, so I guess they wanted to add a pun to it), Sweet Apple Acres as Omppulan Omenatarha (quite much the same thing), Wonderbolts as Sähikäiset ("Sparksters"?) or the Grand Galloping Gala as Suuri vuosijuhla (lit. "Grand annual celebration" or so forth). While this is not a huge issue, it felt kinda weird at times. Especially when they mispronounced the English names (it stung me every time someone said Twilight Sparkle).
As for the voices, Twilight feels like the only one with a decent voice, or at least with a fitting one. Just that the voice actor didn't put a whole lot of soul into it or so.
Spike is a bit too feminine, and why would you cast Misty's (Pokemon) voice actor for his role? I mean, seriously.
Applejack didn't have any farmer feel to her voice, and all around unfitting.
Pinkie Pie sounds a bit too old, not high-pitched enough and simply doesn't sound as crazy as the original English voice. "Oatmeal, are you crazy?" (Kaurapuuro, ihan hullua!) lost its impact with that, sorta.
Dunno what exactly is bugging me with Rarity's voice, but I guess it fits. Sorta.
Fluttershy sounds a bit too bold with her voice. Other than her stuttering, it doesn't sound anything like what I'd expect from her.
Again, it could be worse, but for a saturday morning cartoon we likely won't get anything better than this.
Belgianpony here. I got the Dutch and French one. The Dutch one is terrible (Rainbow Dash sounds like RARITY! What the hell?!), but the French one is actually pretty good.
Hmm, good thing I didn't have very high expectations while I waited for these. The dubbing scene really sucks here in Finland atm, only Disney movies get anywhere near decent dubs. Then again, it could be worse. And aye as others pointed out, the english names in the middle of finnish sentences sound incredibly awkward. I don't get why they didn't just translate them.
You know, I was meaning to ask about the presence (or lack thereof) of a "farmer" accent with Applejack. I mean obviously, this being a Finnish dub she couldn't have anything resembling an American southern twang, but I supposed there must be some sort of equivalent in any given language. Thank you for answering my question, anyway. :)
Oh God, I love Finnish, but I just got finished watching(no pun intended), and it is indeed subpar. What a waste.
I love Finnish, it's my most favourite language. But that voice acting really falls flat and doesn't bring out their personalities at all. That's not Pinkie Pie, no matter how you spin it.
Awesome, I've been looking for a Finnish dub to watch for some time! I really don't think this is that bad at all. I agree with one of the earlier comments; the actors are good, they're just absolutely voicing the wrong characters.
Meh, voices where off, translations good, they actually used finish puns... or made the words into finnish puns, well some from what i could gather.
Overall 'lip' synch is good, the sound itself is good, as in its not voices on one sound level and music, sounds and what not on another level or even quality...
But if anyone saw the first trailier for My Little Pony, meaning the song. Then you would heare the voices where kinda horrible...
It seems much here is over expectations, Twilights voice sounded okay, Applejack was eh. Rainbow Dash fits... I do like Pinkies voice, but she speaks it in so plane way... and the scream was done ... badly ya know the eeeeh, bats on my face, bats on my face... WAIT
also, dat rarity.
and Fluttershy isnt to bad actually
I think the fans super from Over Expectation and Golden Nostalgia
The voice actors could have been far, far worse...
I don't think it's THAT bad. Then again, I had very low expectations. Twilight is good, the others vary from terrible to decent.
Fluttershy doesn't sound like herself. She doesn't seem shy, aside from the stuttering. Just very plain.
Pinkie's too old. She's more annoying than cute.
Spike sounds like Misty from Pokemon, which is giving me unintentional nostalgia. Doesn't really fit him.
Rarity is okay. She resembles her original voice, no complaints there.
Applejack is very plain. No accent or personality at all. Dash is similarly generic. Not bad, just boring.
They translated the places and events, but not the names. They likely couldn't do it for legal reasons, which is a shame. The English names stand out, especially when they're spelled poorly.
The opening lyrics are significantly different. Here's a literal translation back to English:
I didn't know a friend before Even though these moments are now with you Let's have adventures and Laugh In my heart you always Belong We share everything It brings magic to my life! As friendship is magic for you and me
It's watchable overall, but clearly worse than the original. I'll stick with the English dub.
@WhiteDiamonds There isn't exactly a Southern American thing in here, but there are plenty of slangs that could easily create the farmer type of feel for native finns. However, I don't know if any of these voice actors could've even mimicked such a way of speaking without making it sound forced.
I hate everything this dubbing company does! They are truly masters of ruining a show.
These voice actors sound the same no matter what their character is. They don't do voice actin, the just give their voice to the characters. Not the mention the complete lack of emotion in their act. I seriously think that they just grab their script and start reading.
Sadly the mentality in Finland is "Kids don't mind bad voice acting in cartoons".
As much as it pains me to say this as a Finn, the Swedes did it better.
Like many have already said, the dub could've been a lot worse. I don't really approve of some of the voice selections since they don't match the characters' personalities. Then again, we have such a small amount of dubbers here in Finland, so they probably didn't have much choice to begin with. I think I'll grow to like the dub anyway, can't wait to see it on TV (hopefully soon). C:
They all sound like the same voice actor to me, even Spike! (I'm a native) The grammar is mostly clumsy, and the translated names are too silly, I might even say stupid. The opening theme is translated quite clumsily. And Ratsunia (Equestria) misses the whole point! Equestria = land of the equines. Ratsunia = land of those who are ridden/riding horses. Rainbow misses any extra boldness, Fluttershy lacks shyness and Applejack has no accent.
Since I don't speak Finnish I'm confused as to how anyone expects Applejack to have an accent in this dub. Accents don't exactly translate to other languages very well.
Hooly carp these were awful. I am suddenly reminded of the reason I refuse to watch any animations in Finnish, despite being Finn. The subs are just awful, and more often than not done by the same half a dozen voiceovers. One factor might be that you hear the same voices in every goddamn animation that gets dubbed to Finnish.
I could listen for a minute before my head started to hurt too much. Let's just say that if my introduction to these ponies was this Finnish version, I'd have thought twice before giving it a serious try. Or thrice.
Then again, I wasn't expecting much. I think the only animation I can tolerate in my native language is those few Disney movies I grew up on, and saw plenty of times in Finnish before about age of ten... of course, Disney tends to have "slightly different" idea of good quality voice acting.
Count on me to openly ignore that this ever was dubbed to Finnish.
Yes, exactly, that's what I meant really. =) Again I realize she couldn't have had any manner of American accent seeing as how they're not speaking English, but I figured there had to be some sort of Finnish equivalent to our "country" slang. Thank you again for responding!
@Kuro Fox omg I nearly lost it when you said horse-apples. I could just here the loathing dripping from every syllable. I don't live in Finland but every time I hear a poorly translated anime from japan I hate every minute of it. I can only imagine if every cartoon in America was that way. I would probably loath it as much as you do. you made me laugh.
Gah! I thought I could survive just an episode a day, but with all these other versions coming out, I want to watch them all but have no time! Should be fun, though.
Not terrible at all. Not as good as the original voices, of course, but far, far from terrible. I'd quibble with some of the translations, but overall it's a good try.
Well to be honest, we "did" have good dubbing back in 80's and early 90's. Unfortunately most of good dubbers did shows only for YLE's channels (and they still are, but mostly only the "Little Two" programs). The subtittling on YLE's channels have been always quite numerous.
MTV3 the channel actually started with one single "reader" (Raila Hämäläinen was her name, and not much info is found of her unfortunately): Basically she read the translation scripts with some few tone changes, mainly between when she either as female or male character. Some of her shows (alongside with Satu Miettinen as the translator) were "Piccolino no Bōken", "Midnight Patrol: Adventures in the Dream Zone / Potsworth and Company" and "Casper"-cartoon series animated by Famous Studios. Eventually they got got few translation teams, such as "Tuotantotalo Werne", who actually did do most of the Disney-show translations over here (they also dubbed Animaniacs, which was a decent dub).
Then there was the infamous "Agapio Racing Team". God, that was simple super horrible, and they basically dubbed all the shows back in early 2000 on channel Nelonen.
There was another "okay" dubbing team too, which was mainly known for rather bad dubs for "Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin" (Silver Fang in English, Hopenuoli in Finnish). This company was known as Golden Voice Oy, which went defunct in the middle of 90's.
In overall, to those who are interested, if you'd like to hear some good Finnish dubbing, look for some cartton were especially shown in YLE during late 80's and early 90's. Mainly pointing out shows such as: - "Moomin" (the 1990-series and no further than episode 78) -"Alfred J. Kwak" (with some slight name changes such as with "Professor Paljas" into "Pallas", because Paljas in Finnish is "Bald/Bare/Naked") -Various Disney movies and series
So yeah, that's some info about our dibbing and hints to find actually good Finnish-dubs. Hopefully you'll find this comment insightful. ;)

I love hearing the ponies in other languages. Makes me giggle.
ReplyDeleteAs for being terrible, even so, still funny. At least to me.
DAT VOICE!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hear the brazillian dub is really bad too.
ReplyDeleteThis is comical to me, for I have a brony friend who lives in Brazil.
@NinesTempest Yes, it is terrible. But it´s not official as far as i know, because we don´t have the show here, yet...
ReplyDeletei'm a brony and i live in brazil XP
ReplyDelete@Freekles1245
ReplyDeleteHuh, he told me it was official. He was comparing it to every other animated show he'd seen as he grew up and complaining that the voices were not only bad actors, but bad choices...

ReplyDeleteIt could be worse, but this certainly is pretty bad dubbing, this coming from a native Finn.
ReplyDeleteGonna watch the clips and then write some sort of review.
Voi, vittu -_- If they ever bring the show to TV here, I would hope they would just put subtitles on it.
ReplyDeleteThe Finnish dub of Digimon Frontier was a LOT worse...
ReplyDelete@NinesTempest
ReplyDeleteWell, they´re not bad actors, really, but they dubbed the wrong characters.

ReplyDeleteAnd now every finnish pony will hate me.
All dubbing is bad, I refuse to watch dubs, subs are mutch better.
ReplyDeleteWell, when MLP:FiM gets released in Mexico, im pretty sure that dubbing will suck balls. It could even be even more bad than this...
ReplyDeleteOk, forget everything i said before. We´ve got the Episode 3 with the official portuguese dub. You were right NinesTempest. And, it´s terrible.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I wished I didn't understand Finnish at all! This gave me a massive headache...
ReplyDeleteThe same voices... In every show...

The dub is DEFINITELY official, these voice actors voice almost all children's cartoons and it says so on Hasbro Finland's website.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah it is BAD, man.. T_T There is zero soul, it's a bunch of teenagers babbling. Not cool.
It's not THAT bad.

ReplyDeleteOn a note totally unrelated to the Finnish Dub, or the Finnish Language in general: Twilight Can't Enjoy her sandwich.
ReplyDeleteI can't judge the quality of the dub that much, not knowing any Finnish at all, they don't sound too horrible though.
next on the list for terrible dubs of MLP:FiM : German.

ReplyDeleteTwilight and Spike´s vocals did match the characters, but the rest... meh.
ReplyDeleteOfficially official? I wonder who they got to do the voices... Some other shows I've heard are atrociously voiced.
ReplyDeleteOnly good dub I remember was V.M. Loiri as the Genie in Aladdin. But I suppose he can't be any of the mane cast. :)
ReplyDelete(No edit button that I see.)
Not terrible at all. Not as good as the original voices, of course, but far, far from terrible. I'd quibble with some of the translations, but overall it's a good try.
