Yes, we all saw it. Yes, we all geeked out. Well, I did, anyway. Probably a lot more enthusiastically than I should have, if the coughing fit afterward was any indication.
I've gotten about half a dozen of these comparisons, but these are the best and show the similarities well. Find them after the break!

ReplyDeleteHow cool is that!?
ReplyDeleteA Long Time Ago in Equestria Far, Far Away
ReplyDeleteCan't watch. New ep. Not seen yet
ReplyDeleteso AWESOME
ReplyDeleteAnd then after this episode, everypony except for Applejack became drug addicts.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I wasn't imagining this.
ReplyDeletestar wars just got 20% cooler!
ReplyDeletealso, this show is f'in awesome!!!
Pity the Star Wars clips were extended or cut short for this comparison.
ReplyDeleteEven so, I'm sure everyone got a Star Wars vibe from this scene.
I'm really glad I noticed this right away. Usually I miss stuff like this, but this time... I got it :P
ReplyDeleteamazing
ReplyDeleteSo is judging by the scene comparisons...
ReplyDeleteDid Applejack just suggestively wink to Celestia? Here comes the fics.
I KNEW IT REMINDED ME OF STAR WARS!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me regret that i never saw star wars complete..
ReplyDeleteDid you guys realize that the whole ending itself might have redeemed the entire Star Wars franchise for thousands of fans that rage-quited after seeing Jar Jar Binks?
ReplyDeleteIt did that for me :3 I'm in the mood to watch the Trilogy again!
must watch new episode first!!!
ReplyDeletei'll come for you later video
As I was watching the ending, I was thinking "This looks like the last scene in "A New Hope". As soon as Twilight did that grin, I knew it was a homage to it. And when it did the circle fady thing to credits, I completely lost it. XD
ReplyDeleteWhats Hilarious is the fact that the original Star wars video for this is filled to the brim with Brony comments lol.
ReplyDeletestar trek - check
ReplyDeletestar wars - check
what other famous "star" franchises can we expect...
stargate ?
battlestr galactica ?
I nerdgasm'd at the reference. Great way to end this two-parter!
ReplyDeleteThat was amazing!
ReplyDeletenow stop updating for now and take a good amout of tlc for your self. And if you have anoter coffing fit take a bath whit eucaliptuse ,it will do you good.
ReplyDeleteFirst Star Trek, and now Star Wars. This is just delightful. The writers are so nerdy!
ReplyDeleteAlso DAT WINK
When I saw the ending the very first thing I thought of was Star Wars. Glad to see I'm not the only one seeing the similarities.
ReplyDeleteSo that's why the scene looked so familiar.
ReplyDeleterofl @ 0:13
ReplyDeleteGah! It's like the same ending! And I, too, geeked out a little too much when I saw this.
ReplyDeleteThat smirk from AJ seemed odd at first, but it makes perfect sense now!
ReplyDeleteAnd then, Twilight went on to voice the Joker.
ReplyDeleteCelestia became an alcoholic
And Applejack went on to star in Indiana Jones, The Fugitive, Cowboys and Aliens, Blade Runner, Air Force One, Apocalypse Now...
spotted it instantly. (unlike some of you lot, i suspect, i must confess to remembering it the first time around.) Suspected it would be frame-accurate too.
ReplyDeleteMixed feelings. At first viewing of course, I laughed like a drain. Then I thought, this is so obviously put in there for us. I hope they're careful with this sort of thing. They shouldn't be trying too hard to please *us*, they'll break it.
Where was the Star Trek reference? Was it just the Parasprites or did I miss another one?
ReplyDeleteAs soon as Applejack winked
ReplyDeleteI knew it was Star Wars
@Snoozer
ReplyDeleteDiscord in general was a huge walking Star Trek reference.
INB4 people saying that this show has jumped the shark. Oh wait. Too late. :/
ReplyDeleteA little homage here and there never hurt any pony, and really did it make it any worse? I don't think so.
woot , i honestly didnt get it ,probably since i didnt see that part :(
ReplyDeleteanyway i expected something like Discord saying "Twilight ,im your father"
xD
So we got Q and the Star Wars ending. These last two episodes were really outta this world!
ReplyDeleteGet it?
It'll sink in.
Thank god I'm not the only one who thought that! :D
ReplyDeletedamn... it hasn't even been 6 hours yet!
ReplyDeleteI will never look at Star Wars the same again.
ReplyDeleteThey referenced Star Wars in both season premieres, awesome. Season 1 had the celebration from The Phantom Menace, this one has the New Hope award ceremony.
ReplyDeleteThat BGM needs to be remixed or something...
ReplyDeleteOrchestral battle theme maybe...?
So Applejack is going to be the only one who will have a career after this show ends?
ReplyDelete@DoctorWhooves i really wish he would have, that would have been so amazing!
ReplyDeleteDiscord, voiced by John DeLancie, also played Q in Star Trek : The Next Generation.
ReplyDeleteThis ending was Epic, paying homage to one of the greatest movie series of all time.
Yes I Fangasm'd
>Get on computer to make Star Wars/MLP video
ReplyDelete>See this
...Nevermind
This is still pretty freakin cool
@James Corck
ReplyDeleteThe Original Trilogy before Lucas went crazy with Photoshop. Digitally Remastered is fine with a Director's Cut hasn't been bad with most movies but damn don't go changing the entire movie. I hate having fights with little kids over what is and what is not original content. Yes, I've had this happen to me.
Applejack as Harrison Ford...
ReplyDeleteWhy can I see that so clearly?
@Doug
ReplyDeleteHow about the Last Starfighter or Starship Troopers, the book not the movies.
So... I think I lose some substantial nerd cred for missing this reference. X'P
ReplyDeleteHoly hell, I emailed this literally five minutes before it went up! That was fast! And thanks!
ReplyDeleteAlso Cereal, I'll feel all the concern I want for you. Leave me alone. Bitch.
I have never laughed harder I my life.
ReplyDeleteI knew what it was as soon as I heard the music.
I would like to say that I thought that the storyline was still too compressed. The story naturally fell into three parts:
1. Discord mucks everything up;
2. Twilight must bring her friends back together; and
3. the ponies overcome Discord himself.
The second felt a little bit rushed, but not unacceptably so. However, the third part really got shortchanged: it needed at least five more minutes of airtime. Unfortunately, their time only comes in chunks of 20 minutes, and having a full three-parter would have been wasteful, so I understand.
I knew it right away. May the pony with you
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I wasn't the only one to have a Star Wars freakout nerdgasm at the end of episode II. I so hope they do that more often.
ReplyDelete@Snoozer. I missed the trouble with tribbles reference in the parasprites. It makes sense now
ReplyDeleteI realized it from the music. At first I thought they were playing some sort of rendition of the Wedding March by Mendelssohn ("There Goes the Bride") but as the scene progressed, I realized it was John Williams.
ReplyDeleteMy Little Babylon 5.
ReplyDeleteStar Wars reference is best reference.
ReplyDeleteWow...just.....wow....
ReplyDeletecan we have AppleJack Celestia ship? lol
ReplyDelete...I'm one of the 5 people who didn't get it at all before seeing to the side-to-side comparison, aren't I? I mean, it wouldn't be strange, I'm apparently kinda rare since I didn't like Star Wars that much and only saw each movie once. But...
ReplyDeleteDamn it, a missed but incredibly obvious reference sure can make you feel uncivilized.
the conclusion of episode 2 of season 1 was exactly like the end of Phantom Menace.. music and all
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy right now, I literally squee'd when I saw this, also, I really liked the episode, even if it was a little rushed, then again, who cares? This was EPIC!!!
ReplyDeleteSee, what you don't understand is...it's not Star Wars making the ponies cooler, It's the ponies making Star Wars cooler. Seriously, this might inspire to watch the original trilogy again.
ReplyDeleteI remember when ppl were upset that Art Of The Dress was ripping off some broadway musical. So what? If its done well does it matter that much?
ReplyDelete@JTDrift Aww hell no.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you know how we all had to give away our man cards for this show. Anyone who didn't catch that reference needs to forfeit a huge number of nerd cards.
ReplyDeleteConsidering that it has been mentioned that these two episodes were blocked out VERY early in the creative process, it seems clear that the MLP production staff were, are, and have no intention of stopping being, MASSIVE, MASSIVE NERDS.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love them for it. :D
You want a war of celestial bodies of glowing light? Let me at Celestia, then you'll see your War with Stars!
ReplyDeleteOh Sh*t, I smell a lawsuit.
ReplyDeletePlease, Lucas, dear God, don't do it.
EEEE PPPP II CCCCC

*explode from awesomeness*
ReplyDelete...
*explode again*
Yeah, that was nice, but I hope they reduce the geek factor from now on. I had that strange doubt that they'd go all Internet after noticing bronies. Actually, I'm fine with the current amount but I just hope they don't change the show too much. Nevertheless, this is awesome. :D
ReplyDelete-Tonight's Drawfriends or Nightly Roundup, most likely featuring Star Wars crossover pic
ReplyDeleteAnd now, back to my own time...in the future. For Science!
The reference is lovely and all, but I sure hope you get better soon, Cereal!
ReplyDeleteOh man this was an amazing ending, I was freaking the fuck out. And Spike is totally R2-D2. Just a really great episode overall.
ReplyDelete@fishburger Normally, I don't like when shows pander to geeks and I certainly hope this show shies away from doing internet in-jokes as well, but Star Wars is such a broad cultural phenomena that I think that any adult who watches this show with their kids would have immediately gotten the reference. Maybe some of the elementary school-aged girls might have gotten it too.
@Daniel the Brony (Mama's so proud...)Ass soon as they walked down the aisle i knew it was star wars.
ReplyDeleteApplejack/Han Solo fan-art/fics in 3..2..1...
ReplyDeleteApplejack, "Get in there Winona! I don't care what you smell!"
Lyingjack, "Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?"
Haven't there already been mock-posters of Applejack in Star Wars style?
ReplyDeleteOh God... I think I managed to wake up most of the house laughing at that one... Could they have timed this better if they'd tried?
ReplyDeleteBlu-Ray release has just come out in the last couple of weeks or so, depending on where you are, so a fair portion of the Star Wars fanbase has just rewatched these...
Me, I just watched them last night, so it was completely fresh in my memory - and thus doth Min's jaw drop ;)
Just noticed why I thought the crowd looked odd when the Main 6 were walking in (at 17 seconds in the second video)... Its all a reference to:
ReplyDeletePony Wars episode II - Attack of the clones.
Colgate - 5 times
Carrot top - 4 times plus one from another angle
Lyra - 4 times
Bon Bon - 5 times
One of the pink/purple ponies with blonde manes - 3 times
Berry Punch - 2 sets of 2 duplicates (one of which is barely visible almost directly next to its pair on the left side of the aisle)
Lemon Hearts - 3 times
Twinkle - 3 times
(Yes, I know they tend to do this with background ponies, but I think its a fun joke for a Starwars related scene)
Spike as R2D2. I exploded.
ReplyDeleteI liked the 2nd one better. We got some talented bronies
ReplyDeleteBespin: City in the clouds.
ReplyDeleteCloudsdale: City in the clouds.
Bespin: Built around their main processing plant.
Cloudsdale: Built around their main processing plant.
Bespin industry: Compressing and processing gas to be exported to other parts of the galaxy.
Cloudsdale industry: Making weather phenomena and clouds (out of gas) to be sent to other parts of Equestria.
@Doctor Valor
ReplyDeleteThey weren't already?
I don't know what this says about me, but I thought they were going to spoof this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daJrmkWFUS4&t=2m
That is, until they started to wink at each other, then I instantly knew the reference.
Wouldn't it be badass if the princess would start asking Twilight to be part of the Celestian Army, only to be cut off with that badass line. Next scene: The ponies are running into the sunset as the balloon rises in the background.
SOMEPONY MAKE THIS, PLEASE!
>applejack is han solo
ReplyDelete>dat wink
@Equinenox
ReplyDeleteHaha, somehow I knew what you were talking about before going to the link. Maybe that's because I've been playing StarFox on 3DS lately. It would be an awesome crossover though.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnother Shout out, exactly (1/5) of the reason I love this show.
ReplyDeleteI cried when they killed Discord. RIP best character on the show.
ReplyDeleteNow, someone please remove the Hub "Next" thingy from the credits at the end of this, and we get the best Season 1 finale ever.
ReplyDelete(I said Season 1, cause these two episode were originally meant to be Ep 27 and 28 of S1)
I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to "Discord Strikes Back".
ReplyDelete"Twilight, I am your father. Well, all right I'm not, but I'm actually a direct ancestor of you. I have the genealogy to prove it."
If they REALLY wanted to troll the fans/haters they could have Rainbow Dash do the wink.
ReplyDelete@Tavish DeGroot
ReplyDeleteThey only turned Discord into Stone, and look how well that last Stone Prison held out for him. I suspect he'll be back. Maybe in a TV Movie or something similar...
Stay tuned in two weeks we will see:
ReplyDelete- Discord's army attacks during the winter wrap-up (Slender-Bunnies as AT-ATs)
- The ponies have to evacuate Ponyville
- Applejack slices open BigMac, so Twilight can crawl into to keep warm .... Well, maybe not.
First thing I said at this scene (out VERY loud): "Where's Luna!!!?"
ReplyDeleteStill, it's a Star Wars reference. I'll let the infraction pass... this time!
@Cesco
ReplyDeleteYou, and the whole Bronystate. lol
chocolate rain, double rainbow, star wars ending, star trek enemy!
ReplyDelete*head explodes like a nuke*
@Killsteal_Wolf
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, I was somewhat hoping they'd do an after credits "the end...?" moment with Discord though.
@[ger]Brony1
ReplyDeleteTwilight hides out in the Everfree Forest, where Zecora gives her special combat training.
Discord this time turns Applejack to stone, and turns her over to Appalosian turned bounty hunter Braeburn.
Discord reveals that he is Twilight's father's father's father's father's....well, ancestor.
...Apple Solo?
ReplyDelete@Altherix
ReplyDeleteWhat makes your LiarJack/Solo quote even better is that Harrison Ford completely ad-libbed that line, which is very similar to how LiarJack attempts to lie (and even how normal Applejack tries to think up an excuse in "Party of One").
Everyone expects Star Trek Reference
ReplyDeleteCelestia makes massive Star Wars Reference.
Trollestia 5: The Troll Quenn Strikes Back
Wow, when they made to reference, they didn't pull any punches, did they? It's like they just ponified the ending of Star Wars...
ReplyDeleteSO AWESOME /)^3^(\
Never has the crying awesome face ever been more appropriate.. ;;
ReplyDeleteThis episode makes me so happy even with the sad part in the middle!
No way! This is real, my imagination didn't played some trick on me. With evidence like that however I know I'm not insane ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what is the best? They made it for us :)
@Doctor Valor HA! I see what you did there, and I like it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not good at spotting references.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the ending, I was thinking "Hmmm...this is pretty Star Wars-ish."
But then, my doubts got the better of me.
"Meh, I'm just seeing things, I never spot references, and besides, Star Wars in MLP, pff, yeah right."
Then Cereal commented right away it's a StarWars reference. :P
Anyhow, awesome !!! This show kept surprising me with each episode in Season 1, and looks like they are keeping this habit of theirs in S2 aswell :)
and outside of the castle everypony is having a massive RotJ ending style celebration.
ReplyDelete@Doctor Valor

GeekGeekGeekGeekGeek
Damn. I didn't get it. Shame on me.
ReplyDeleteSquee! I saw it immediately and just about lost it. LOL
ReplyDeleteHAHA this is just what i saw when i watched this earlier :D
ReplyDeleteI like how Studio B is part of DHX, and how THX is a Lucas Films company.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, as soon as I saw the ending of this episode live this morning, I new immediately it was supposed to be the ending from SW IV: A New Hope. Not surprised that so many of these popped up on the same day.
Come one and ALL,
ReplyDeleteFor I have returned from BroNYcon.
And it is word of Thiessen that they DID in fact make the ending.
FRAME FOR FRAME
A copy of Episode IV.
Blinky said...
ReplyDeleteSo that's why the scene looked so familiar.

Yeaah, I felt it too. Then I felt nostalgia for some reason. And when I woke up today, and see this, just, woah!
Every little Jedi, Jawa, Wookie and droid stashed up in my Star Wars geek brain just did a barrel roll right now.
ReplyDeleteGood job sirs.
#2 - Great Job on the sync up with the music!
ReplyDeleteDoes...
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean AJXCelestia is now canon...?
Make star trek reference by having Q voice your villain....
ReplyDeleteThen make star wars ending.
Hasbro yew sly devils
@Dusty the Royal Janitor
ReplyDelete....I'd watch all of that. Negl, dude. 8D
Looks like I'm the only one who didn't like the Star Wars ending at all. That particular scene has been parodied so many times it's gotten old, and Star Wars itself stopped being cool around the time the prequels were released. The rest of the episode was good though . . .
ReplyDeleteI'm not understanding why people are calling themselves geeks for getting a pretty obvious star wars reference. It is over 30 years old and still a very popular movie, I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say it's pretty geeky to NOT get the reference.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the ponies who say 'I hated the star wars reference, MLP FIM is getting a little mainstream'... stop being such a hoofster and admit it was pretty clever.
Hipster bronie?
ReplyDeleteLOL :D
http://s3.amazonaws.com/kym-assets/photos/images/newsfeed/000/143/655/1309744963825.jpg
I recognized the homage immediately, as soon as the angle reversed and we saw the palace hall filled with ponies on either side of the runway. Concluding with an iris-out wipe to credits hammered the homage to a close.
ReplyDeleteMLP: FiM's references to other works are usually quite subtle and don't depend on foreknowledge of the source inspiration to enjoy. This one is much more overt, and while it's fun, I hope it's not indicative of a trend.
Nope, you weren't the only one that geeked out :D
ReplyDeleteINB4 George Lucas becoming a Bronie!
All I cared about was the background ponies. I sort of didn't notice the similarities of the endings, and I still don't care. Probably because I wasn't a big Star Wars fan back then.
ReplyDeleteAnybody notice that Pinkie gives us "the look" again?
ReplyDeleteJudging too about the scene comparison, so Celestia is like Chewbacca at what?
ReplyDeleteBoth are fuzzy and go 'waaaah' all the time?
Chewy can fly like a birdie?
Is Chewy a she?
Got a sister exiled in an asteroid?
The worm from 'Empire Strikes Back' is Chewy's sister?
would Celestia "Leia" kiss "Luke" Twilight???
