ReplyDeleteI am currently attempting to endure a terrible headache and I've been putting up with it just for this post (and by terrible I mean it makes me cry), but it was worth it though.
ReplyDeleteAfter first minute I can say that the next 30 minutes of goddess-damn pleasure!
The second was lovely, except the vocal part, you sounded slightly as if you were singing through a clogged nose, no offence, although the screamo part was brilliant, top-notch, and so was the instrumental part.
The third one is simply wonderful.

ReplyDeleteI prefer my death metal expansive and operatic, which is basically against the grain from normal death metal. Although I'm not sure if you can call Dimmu Borgir death metal anymore.
ReplyDelete@Foolonthehillz I certainly hope that's sarcasm, if it isn't then I apparently have a very different opinion on what qualifies as lovely... I associate things that are soft and smooth with lovely, not screaming, drums, and guitar. I love rock and pretty much anything that isn't country or rap but the only songs I consider, "lovely," are usually ones that have an orchestra.
ReplyDeleteThat's just my opinion though, lovely could be something entirely different to anyone else, and I respect that, but I simply can't imagine how something that creates distressing sounds can be called lovely.

@Jelfes Arw, open your mind a little bit . . . dig around. There's quite a lot out there that could objectively qualify as lovely - spread quite evenly throughout genres, I might add, though it can be more difficult to find the good stuff in genres such as death metal which are saturated with so much bad music to hide the good. And no, I never said that the cover was lovely - in fact I find it quite the opposite, though it was really funny - but defining death metal as "screaming, drums, and guitar" leads me to believe that you've been misinformed as to exactly what the genre is. That's all :)

Sweet Celestia that's awesome.
I recommend Dimmu Borgir as a good entry point for being a cross-over between death metal and black metal. My nod goes to Progenies of the Great Apocalypse. Then you can move on to, shall we say, stranger territories like said Moonshield from In Flames or Punish My Heaven by Dark Tranquility.

@pmcollectorboy The beginning part of that song, without the singing and loud guitar, does qualify as lovely to me, but[analogy] just because Transformers 3 had some good parts does not mean its entirety should be labeled the same.[/analogy]
Growling, shouting, screaming. I've heard all of those things in death metal, none of those things are something that would calm you if you heard it coming from behind you though. lol
I don't want to come of as close minded, I've tried listening to every type of music that has presented itself to me, so don't think I'm just trying to slander death metal, I've had experience with most genre of music and not till today with that Moonshield song, had I found a death metal song that had any parts of it that were pleasing for me to listen to. Again, just my opinion, not anything personal against any of you that enjoy such music.

ReplyDeleteYeah I'm not so big on death metal either. I'd wager about 80% of it sounds like garage bands who are out of tune. I've listened to Liquid Metal on satellite radio before. I prefer my metal to be expansive and operatic, hence my affection for Dimmu Borgir, silly as they may be. But I can't knock them for employing the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

ReplyDeleteI'm personally more of a black metal person, because there is a HUGE amount of wondrous orchestral and post-black metal out there these days . . . look no further than Agalloch if you want something stunningly beautiful (Limbs on the album Ashes Against the Grain, par example)

ReplyDeleteIf you really want a good transition-into-death-metal band, try Novembers Doom...They have the growl, but the singer manages to make himself intelligible while doing so - and he can also sing clean like a god. Plus, they're just really damn good.

@Foolonthehillz That's probably the most enjoyable death metal I've listened to before, though the beginning was just a little too strong on the guitar for my liking(it doesn't fit the majority of the song's calm, dark, and low mood IMO).
ReplyDeleteAnother thing to note is my severe disliking of growling etc. If it hadn't been for the singing around 2:35 & 4:55 it would have been something I would listen to on a semi-regular basis.
Thanks for at least showing me some examples of death metal that aren't all about destroying your vocal chords though.
