I am currently attempting to endure a terrible headache and I've been putting up with it just for this post (and by terrible I mean it makes me cry), but it was worth it though. After first minute I can say that the next 30 minutes of goddess-damn pleasure!
The second was lovely, except the vocal part, you sounded slightly as if you were singing through a clogged nose, no offence, although the screamo part was brilliant, top-notch, and so was the instrumental part.
I prefer my death metal expansive and operatic, which is basically against the grain from normal death metal. Although I'm not sure if you can call Dimmu Borgir death metal anymore.
@Foolonthehillz I certainly hope that's sarcasm, if it isn't then I apparently have a very different opinion on what qualifies as lovely... I associate things that are soft and smooth with lovely, not screaming, drums, and guitar. I love rock and pretty much anything that isn't country or rap but the only songs I consider, "lovely," are usually ones that have an orchestra.
That's just my opinion though, lovely could be something entirely different to anyone else, and I respect that, but I simply can't imagine how something that creates distressing sounds can be called lovely.
@Jelfes Arw, open your mind a little bit . . . dig around. There's quite a lot out there that could objectively qualify as lovely - spread quite evenly throughout genres, I might add, though it can be more difficult to find the good stuff in genres such as death metal which are saturated with so much bad music to hide the good. And no, I never said that the cover was lovely - in fact I find it quite the opposite, though it was really funny - but defining death metal as "screaming, drums, and guitar" leads me to believe that you've been misinformed as to exactly what the genre is. That's all :) And on a side note, how do you reply to someone properly, as you just did? *is new to blogger or whatever this is*
I recommend Dimmu Borgir as a good entry point for being a cross-over between death metal and black metal. My nod goes to Progenies of the Great Apocalypse. Then you can move on to, shall we say, stranger territories like said Moonshield from In Flames or Punish My Heaven by Dark Tranquility.
@Foolonthehillz I use scroll wheel and click with it on the link to open new tab.
Didn't mean to imply that you thought it was lovely but the OP thought so and your response made it seem to me that you thought the same.
@pmcollectorboy The beginning part of that song, without the singing and loud guitar, does qualify as lovely to me, but[analogy] just because Transformers 3 had some good parts does not mean its entirety should be labeled the same.[/analogy]
Growling, shouting, screaming. I've heard all of those things in death metal, none of those things are something that would calm you if you heard it coming from behind you though. lol
I don't want to come of as close minded, I've tried listening to every type of music that has presented itself to me, so don't think I'm just trying to slander death metal, I've had experience with most genre of music and not till today with that Moonshield song, had I found a death metal song that had any parts of it that were pleasing for me to listen to. Again, just my opinion, not anything personal against any of you that enjoy such music.
@Jelfes Eeeeep, Dimmu Borgir is a bad recommendation >_> hmm . . . Tiamat is always a good starting point. Fairly lightweight, but very beautiful if you give it a chance . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWfEH-83rxo >_>
Yeah I'm not so big on death metal either. I'd wager about 80% of it sounds like garage bands who are out of tune. I've listened to Liquid Metal on satellite radio before. I prefer my metal to be expansive and operatic, hence my affection for Dimmu Borgir, silly as they may be. But I can't knock them for employing the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
I'm personally more of a black metal person, because there is a HUGE amount of wondrous orchestral and post-black metal out there these days . . . look no further than Agalloch if you want something stunningly beautiful (Limbs on the album Ashes Against the Grain, par example)
If you really want a good transition-into-death-metal band, try Novembers Doom...They have the growl, but the singer manages to make himself intelligible while doing so - and he can also sing clean like a god. Plus, they're just really damn good.
Choice song picks: "Swallowed By the Moon," "Through A Child's Eyes," "Our Twilight Innocence," "The Dead Leaf Echo," "Rain," "Drown the Inland Mere, and "What Could Have Been."
Eventually you'll get to Fleshgod Apocalypse. But baby steps, man. Baby steps.
LOL. Look at all the death metal fans crawling out of the woodwork. We love music about dark soundscapes and watch a show about rainbows and pink ponies. I love it!
Death/doom is really good, as Raefire suggested with Novembers Doom . . . if you can tolerate that and you like Arabic folk music, look no further than Orphaned Land (Specifically the album Mabool)
Hmm. Not digging Whatever That Hurts. It's got some gorgeous moments, but I'm not latching onto the whispery bits, although in parts they DO sound like a down-tuned Shadows Fall.
@pmcollectorboy I'd be more wont to recommend listening to the album all the way through. It's . . . interesting and Whatever That Hurts isn't its best moment (I don't like the whispery bits all that much either, though besides those and Pocket-Sized Sun the album is great)
Hey man, the core underpinnings of metal fandom is the friendship and love of the metalhead community. It really shouldn't be that much of a surprise that we like the show, honestly.
@Foolonthehillz That's probably the most enjoyable death metal I've listened to before, though the beginning was just a little too strong on the guitar for my liking(it doesn't fit the majority of the song's calm, dark, and low mood IMO).
Another thing to note is my severe disliking of growling etc. If it hadn't been for the singing around 2:35 & 4:55 it would have been something I would listen to on a semi-regular basis.
Thanks for at least showing me some examples of death metal that aren't all about destroying your vocal chords though.
@Jelfes Anytime! And while on the subject of extreme metal in general, make sure you look at Ashes Against the GRain by Agalloch (fantastic album) and give Ecailles de Lune by Alcest a try too . . . also fantastic entrance-level samples.
Yay! The first one was fun to hear. Not long enough for a full rave in my opinion, but good for an opener (of course my brony mix is only 8 minutes, barely an appetizer).
I'm sending the metal one off to my hipster metalhead friend once he wakes up. Hopefully that will be enough to get him to watch more pony!
I'm glad everypony kind of sort of likes my death metal song, though I said in the description the sucky vocals were kind of intentional (Remember, this is metal, not Broadway).
@Jelfes Sorry, I'm not the most coherent person when I get a headache, what I meant is that I enjoyed the song, so I was more commenting in it's quality rather than mood. I should have said it's great, sorry.

Did not see the "TROLOLO" part coming
ReplyDeleteThis is great, I needed something to play while doing homework. Now I don't feel so bad for staying in tonight :D
ReplyDeleteLOL. The death metal one made me laugh myself sick.
ReplyDelete@a441f560-db5b-11e0-b685-000bcdcb471e lol, you heard that too?
ReplyDeleteSeems long...
ReplyDeleteOh, well. It's party time!
@Wolf I'm not sure if, "lovely," is the best description or even a viable one for any death metal.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm, genre for the third one...
ReplyDeleteMaybe ambient trance? The bassline is throwing me off though. Yeah, I'm thinking ambient trance fits best. I approve.
And death metal? o_O
30 mins of MLP rave? O___O <--- mind can't handle
@Jelfes are you sure you even know what death metal is? And if you do, are you sure you've actually listened to any? :P
ReplyDeletehello i made the third track there. I call the genre "sampledelica".
ReplyDeleteI prefer my death metal expansive and operatic, which is basically against the grain from normal death metal. Although I'm not sure if you can call Dimmu Borgir death metal anymore.

Equestria girls death metal cover made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteSearch on Youtube for "Moonshield" by In Flames, then.
ReplyDeleteBTW, that's not "screaming" that's "growling". ^.~

Pony rave music? Eh, I'll give it a listen before bed.

Sweet Celestia that's awesome.

ReplyDeleteIf anything, Tiamat is more of an acclimatory step, because they're not quiiiiiite death metal, but fairly close on Wildhoney.

Oohoohoohooh! And shoegaze black metal, which is mostly Alcest and Amesoeurs . . . also fantabulous.
ReplyDelete@pmcollectorboy I meant as a starting point :P though I'm not personally a fan, I figured he'd start disliking a Dimmu song after a few minutes.

I was enjoying the first one right up until Scootaloo opened her mouth. >__>;

ReplyDeleteRAVING IS TRULY MAGIC! That mix is AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteDang, that first one was looooong indeed. lol But I listened to the whole thing. Pretty fun to listen to.
ReplyDeleteThought the third was alright too.

hiya all, i did the first mix, I have a 'part 2' in the works, but for youtube's sake i wasn't going to put an hour up, just keep your eyes open.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it so much, it was REALLY fun to do.

ReplyDeleteits a good doodle!

ReplyDeleteAn hour long rave song? Ah great. More battle music for my game of Beat Hazard.
ReplyDeleteThat first one needs to be about twenty-percent longer.
ReplyDeleteWow, that 30min mix sounds great so far.
ReplyDeleteLuckily I have space on my iPod and the walk to college is 30mins.
