I actually met Nicholas here at Bronycon. He does some really good piano/classical compositions, many of which have already been featured here. He finished a few more and tossed them all into an album on Bandcamp, so I told him he'd get an album post.
Check it all out here, or hit up the links below if you want to go that route instead.

ReplyDelete@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteCrap, Jelfes is on! Hide yo firsts, and hide yo thirds!
@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteEnter "mods are asleep; post ponies" reference here
Alright, what the hell is the deal with this Jelfes thing?
ReplyDelete@Xort
ReplyDeleteHay! we're gunna play a game I like to call, Haaaave you met Jelfes!
I really like them, but they're somewhat interchangeable IMO, except maybe Pinkie Pie and AJ.
ReplyDeleteAlso, steampunk dj for piano collections. Well played, Sethisto, well played
ReplyDelete@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteYeeeaaah!
Ooooohh, that Fluttershy one is really nice; you know what, they're all piano music, they're all nice, it's just a lot easier to say that.
ReplyDeleteEpic Sax Pinkie is best Pinkie.
Each one was the same theme for the most part so I'm not listening to them in their entirety right now, but the parts that I listened to on each one were really nice, though some sections could have used more energy in them.
Any chance for sheet music? These songs are amazing!! Very well composed, Baschfire. Thank you very much for your musical genius and contribution to the brony musical community, it has been very much appreciated
ReplyDelete@Bombedrumbum
ReplyDeleteI got a few request about that, sadly, I never wrote anything down for that. This is all improvised by me.
I'd love to get sheets, but ... yeah, trying to get all that down would be murder
@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteThe first two (fluttershy and rainbow dash) have similar themes, everything else is definitely not that idea
@baschotaria
ReplyDeleteIts all fine, if you don't want to, that's okay. I feel your pain, though. As a fellow pianist/composer of improvised works, I know that it can be very difficult to transcribe the notes. I tried doing it once, and just gave up. Thank you for your honesty, however. Now I know that im not the only one.
I didn't mean theme, my bad, harder to actually determine what I was specifically talking about.
ReplyDeleteIt might have just been that there was no supplemental music from other instruments, either way though, they were good, it may just be the daunting 4 minute minimum of each song that made me not listen to each in full because M&B doesn't fit very well with beautiful piano playing and trying to make it fit for 24 minutes just wouldn't have worked :P
Basch is awesome. He likes candy, btw. If y'all ever see him in public, give him a snickers. Trust me. He'll love you forever!
ReplyDelete- Tarby
The piano sounds out of tune and while I'm sure they'd sound great on one that's in tune, I just couldn't get past how un-crisp the pieces sounded. I like them, but the whole time I listened with a grimace because I was like "oh..oh my, that piano is out of tune and is fucking up the harmony to an otherwise enjoyable piece."
ReplyDelete@Jelfes
ReplyDeleteHaha, yeah, its definitely tough for me to keep it as short as they were. I usually improv for 20 minutes at a time...
But yeah, I know that is tough to listen to music for that long
@Fengor
ReplyDeleteI'm not entirely sure where you're getting that from, the piano's are in tune.
Wait wait wait, Unknown is Tarby?! You too have done some great work with music, do you have any place for us to check on your work like Basch does with his YT channel, Twitter, FB, and Skype?
ReplyDelete@baschotaria
ReplyDeleteIt just sounds "off" when I listen to them. I don't know much about music to really explain it better than that. Out of tune was the best I could get to describing it.
@Fengor
ReplyDeleteI've heard a few people say that, I'm not completely sure why though. There's a lot of things it could be, i'll have to check it out

@Fengor
ReplyDeleteAll pianos don't sound the same. Some are built differently than others, this resulting in different quality. This doesnt necessarily mean that it is out of tune. I personally have come across many diffedent pianos, and while they were in tune, some sounded different than others. I may not be the best at explaining things, but I hope that this has helped
@Jelfes and my skype name is mistarleadguitar
ReplyDelete"piano" "out of tune"
ReplyDeleteI lol'd.
Oh gog dammit.
ReplyDeleteI was already working on my own piano collections when i saw this.
Sadface.
I might still work on it but i dont want to be accused of copying you.
Still, I think youve got a lot of really good musical ideas. I think its most likely that fengor isnt a fan of the bright tone of your piano.
Still, good stuff.
These pieces are nice, but I can't think of any part of any one of them that actuall had anything to to with the actual pony...
ReplyDeleteEwww Piano...
ReplyDeleteLol jks, they're pretty good...
@Fuzzgotbeats
You won't be accused of copying if they're way different than these! Piano is a pretty common instrument to use...
Finally, I don't think the piano is out of tune, it's more to do with what you expect a piano to sound like! I imagine you don't expect them to sound like this particular piano! But I suppose that gives it 'character'...
Dr Dissonance
@Unknown Thanks!
ReplyDelete@Mush
ReplyDeleteWell my intention was to musically represent parts of their personality that weren't necessarily their element (except rarity). So in a sense, you could say its not exactly about the mane 6 canon, but, well art is art xD
@Fuzzgotbeats
ReplyDeletego ahead and do it! It wouldn't be copying my idea, and I wouldn't ever say that. No two musicians are ever the same (Just ask Dr. Dissonance)
Mmm, these are all so nice. Good work as always, Baschfire.
ReplyDeletePiano...
ReplyDeleteI am amused.
This looks like a job for....

ReplyDeleteThey are all just Wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteBut I would love to see a touched up version of Applejack. The mussed notes are killin' me cause' the piece is really fabulous. =)
Great job Nicholas!
If you had an electronic keyboard maybe there would be a way to automatically record the musical notation as you improvised? These are nice improvisations but the missed notes, stumbling, wobbly tempo and the sustaining (or "damper") pedal that is always pressed gets in the way.
ReplyDeleteThey're lovely, and as someone with no composing ability, I'm highly impressed. That said, just not my thing. They don't seem to flow well, and there's too much dissonance for me.
ReplyDelete@baschotaria
ReplyDeleteHave you tried using Finale or Sibelius? I recently downloaded Finale NotePad (just the other week, in fact) and it's really good for writing music with.
Loved this series, and his Luna Orchestral =D
ReplyDeleteOh Basch. You and your silly songs... why are they so good? Seriously, you are really good at this...
ReplyDeleteI think I know what Fengor was getting at. I went ahead, and listened to the whole album so I listen to the whole thing. Since the piano is my favorite instrument, I went in with a happy face. I started at the top of the list.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember any examples from the first 3, but I do remember a few grimaces at missed notes, sour notes, missed tempo, etc. I have Twilight's song in front of me now. It started off very nice, but once it got to 1:32, I had to stop the song, and think "Geeze, does anyone else hear this?" Right now Youtube's comment section is busted for me, so I can't see them. So as I said before, there were a lot of sour notes and off-tempo at 1:32 which evened out around 1:45.
I'm not intending to insult here. I love interpretive musical work. Once Twilight was over, I went on to Pinkie Pie. I loved that one. I didn't spot that many sour notes, and the song sounded very upbeat and happy. Applejack's song was just as good. Regarding solving the issue of the sour notes: I think it is indeed important to write out your sheet music. It may be tedious, but when you have the music on paper, it's easier to clean up and trim any parts that don't flow with the music.
On another note (heh heh), I love the quiet flowing music of the Luna Orchestra. It made good background music for when I want to relax, and get some college work done. Beautiful job with that. I'll be watching this thread, so if you want me to elaborate more on my points, just ask.
@Scherzando
ReplyDeleteI didn't write any of this down, I wanted it all improvised.
@frith
ReplyDeleteMissed notes will happen with any piano piece, no matter WHO performs it really. And the wobbly tempo is me using rubato
@Equinenox
ReplyDeleteAt 1:32 it is intentionally so, because twilight (socially) isn't entirely the most "stable." It resolves. The notes, also supposed to be dissonant.
Also, I did not ever intend to have any written sheets, because that defeated the purpose, to be fully improvisatory.
And, with applejack, the most mistakes are a few brushed notes on octaves (which will always happen)
Sorry if this sounds overly defensive, I'm just waking up right now
@cursormortis
ReplyDeleteToo much dissonance? I am rather surprised at that. TS is the only really ... dissonant one.
@baschotaria
ReplyDeleteDang, nice =O How'd you do the Luna Orchestral?
@baschotaria
ReplyDeleteOverly defensive? Not at all! You should be. This is your work we're talking about.
Really I was expecting myself to go into a long essay talking about my point again, but somehow I've got nothing.
