I didn't want to spam the poor guy's Twitter page, but my email is getting slammed instead, so... yah!
John De Lancie (The voice of Discord and Q from Star Trek) is apparently pretty surprised at the sudden surge of rabid pony fans. He has been answering questions over there for a day or two now. I'm not saying go attack his account, but for those that are fans of Discord, there are some pretty interesting responses buried in the logs.
Check out the page for it here!

ReplyDeleteI felt Tim Curry would have made an awesome bad guy for MLP but John De Lancie was PERFECT for Discord. I wonder how he got talked into voicing a show involving ponies.
ReplyDeleteHaha really cool, he should prepare for massive spammige :)
ReplyDeleteIn during the poor guy getting spammed to the moon and back. :P
ReplyDeleteHaha, that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteIncoming spam.
ReplyDeleteI love him; he's such an amazing actor!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty awesome (and the truth!!) But let's try not to spam him even more...
ReplyDeleteHe is just so cool. I'll bet he thought MLP would be "just another job".
ReplyDeleteHe was wrong.
Feel sorry for all the spam he's inevitably going to get but he did make a brilliant Discord, the voice fits him perfectly.
ReplyDeleteNice to see him answering questions.
I was wondering why this post wasn't covered here yet.
ReplyDeleteI found out about it on the SRB2 Forum.
@HaysforPonies
ReplyDeleteI'd actually bet it didn't take a lot of doing. John de Lancie really likes the Q character, but doesn't want to portray an aged Q (because it doesn't make sense): thus, no Q in recent movies or whatnot. (I'm not claiming this is the only reason, just that this is a reason.)
Then, suddenly, this opportunity comes along: he can play an extremely Q-like character, and since it's just VA work, no worries about whether or not he looks old! I won't claim he would've taken no convincing, but if made to look at it from the correct angle it'd look like the perfect opportunity. And, well, I assume that happened.
I certainly hope he had as much fun doing this as it sounds like he did (and since he's reminding people who to pester about him coming back, I'm gonna guess he did).
Oh he started getting spammed the moment someone found and announced his Twitter account.
ReplyDeleteHe replied to me, even. :D

The perfect villain voice, and he is definitely correct...he has no idea what he's in for from his new fan base.

ReplyDeleteWell that's one John de Lancie dream come true,
ReplyDeletehim playing a character in MLP. Now I just wish my
other dream would come true, Lancie playing Q bouncing lines off Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar in a well-written sci-fi show. But considering Andreas is dead, it's probably not going to happen.
But at least I got to see John de Lancie as Q in ponyville; who da thunk it?
Outside of pony stuff I do have to say that when he says check out Alien Voices DO SO! I've had the opportunity to to listen to the recordings he did with Leonard Nimoy as Spock and Q and those alone are AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteAlso thank you! I tried looking before, but didn't see any verified accounts, usually famous people have that so if I don't see it I usually don't trust it. Now I finally got to tell him personally (sorta) what I've always thought of him.
"Gotta say @johndelancie, you always were my favorite on TNG. Now you've gone and taken that spot on @MyLittlePony too!"

Also, wanna point this out here.
"You need to tell the producers if you want to see me again."

My fellow Bronies, you know what to do!
@HaysforPonies
ReplyDeleteTim Curry for season 3 villain! IT MUST BE DONE!
HEAR US ROAR
ReplyDeleteAlso, his twitter reminded me of his small-but-pivotal on Breaking Bad, Season 2.
ReplyDeleteOH GOD, JOHN DE LANCIE'S CHARACTER ON BREAKING BAD....*shudder*
The Trekkies cannot match the passion and intensity of Bronies!!!
ReplyDeleteConsidering how Trekkies set the precedent for focused fandoms like Bronies, we stand on the shoulders of giants here. They saved their show from cancellation TWICE.
ReplyDeleteI considered spamming his Twitter with comments, but then I Fluttershied and hid under a table.
ReplyDeleteDaaamn! It's the guy that played Q on Star Trek TNG! I KNEW there was something familiar about that voice :D
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, there are many similarities in the characters of Discord and Q as well... both enjoy toying around with people for their own amusement and causing general chaos...
MLP cast/crew on Twitter
ReplyDelete@tarastrong
@goldenrusset
@johndelancie
Is there anyone else I don't know about?
Lol, I had tweeted him on the 13th after seeing the preview clip on Wired and mentioned there was a very broad fanbase for the show. He never tweeted me back though and I figure he didn't believe it but he most certainly knows it now. :)
ReplyDeleteDe Lancie is just too awesome for words. Here's hoping that he's merely the first of many awesome guest stars in season 2. I'm still holding out hope for Weird Al.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe Keith David (hey, I can dream, can't I?)
How do you see a twitter reply's source? Clicking the name just is linked to the user.
ReplyDelete@Flutterfan
ReplyDelete......BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry dude, even if he is from TNG and not from the original series that started it all, Trekkies have had over 40 years of crazy fandom passion and it's not died out yet and still very much going strong. ;) Trekkies are just above us Bronies, I'm sorry to say.
@Flutterfan What about Ingram's? I don't remember what its called, but I'm sure he has one.
ReplyDeleteI could see Keith David as some sort of legendary warrior pony. And Tim Curry's voice is meant for evil. It would be hilarious if Patrick Stewart did a voice of course.
ReplyDeleteJeremy Irons for Season 4.
ReplyDeleteErr, he is still alive, right?
@lysana @otakugal15 Guys I was just making a humorous riff of of John De Lancie's tweet and FYI I am a Trekkie (DS9>TNG>Voy>TOS>ENT)so lower your shields.
ReplyDelete@Select Few
Yeah, found him. @dannyimusic
Keith David is my neighbor, where the hell did you guys pull his name from?
ReplyDelete@YeowzaMare
ReplyDeleteKeith David is probably the name of a lot of people's neighbors. But I think the specific Keith David we're thinking of is the voice actor for Goliath from Gargoyles, as well as a whole lot of other voiceover work:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_David
@SabreThat's the one. Without a doubt the best voice ever. To hear him on MLP would be too awesome for words.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I just keep picturing him as Zecora's father. I don't know, I'm weird.
@Sabre
ReplyDeleteI'm aware of who my neighbor is, just wasn't sure why he was being referenced here.
@YeowzaMare
ReplyDeleteHe's being referenced here because he's got a famous voice and we're currently thinking of other famous voice actors after John de Lancie who can stop by the recording studio and chat with ponies. Just that.
Ooooh Jeremy Irons, yeah... that'd be awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think the production crew has to make a flier for people coming on to the show called "So You Are About To Be Spammed By Bronies". Its happened so many times that I think some kind of written warning is needed. Not in a bad way (most of the time) but it can be a shock for some people.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Da Lancie was in his 80's. I always figured he was in his 60's.
ReplyDeleteHe was joking. Or he typoed.
ReplyDelete@EonMaster
ReplyDeleteHe's 63, I looked it up on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_de_Lancie
Some people are just naturally good at playing the best characters.
ReplyDeleteSeth this is why a lot of people hate eqd.
ReplyDeleteI just said "Thank you! We love you! :D"
ReplyDelete=)
I would love to see Tim Curry do an episode. He's already an experienced voice actor.
ReplyDeleteJohn can come back any time too. I love listening to his voice.
Now we just need to get RDA from SG1 on MLP!
ReplyDelete@thegamefilmguruman Ooooh! A McGyver pony would be crazy! I would say that Anderson doing a voice for MLP would be sweet, but Id take a McGyver based character after a General O'neil character any day
ReplyDeleteAnd what about Whooligans?
ReplyDelete@Th3OriginalGing3r
ReplyDeleteMy Little Airwolf.
@Flutterfan
ReplyDelete*Bugs Bunny voice* Eh, he don't know us Trekkies very well, do he?
Sorry man, but Trek has been around for a long, long time, even more so then the first MLP, so I think the Trekkies have a bit of lead there.
@drakethedragon
ReplyDeleteOkay, I saw your other post, sorry about mine.
EGADS!!!
ReplyDeleteMost people just don't realize the scope of what they're getting into, when they become part of this whole thing. I'm glad he's taking it with such a lighthearted attitude. If anything John's solidifying a huge chunk of new fans for himself.
ReplyDelete-Moonlight Ballad, Bard of Equestria
Yeah, Keith David would be epic, but I never got a chance to watch Gargoyles much when I was a kid. I did remember it vaguely being awesome for the one episode I did get to see. I should probably go check it out somewhere sometime.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I've long since associated his voice with Chaos, god of discord, of the "I'm forced to fight Cosmos because Cid and Shinryu are dicks" variety. Loved his work for Dissidia. He brought the appropriate amount of ham for that role. Doesn't stop him from appearing here, but that's the first thing I think of when I see/hear that name.
I'm also down with RDA, Tim Curry, Jeremy Irons, and Weird Al as guest roles. Would be epic, really. May I suggest, also, Yuri Lowenthal, or even Liam O'Brien? Christopher Corey Smith and Dave Whittenberg would also be good.
Yes, I know. I'm blatant about what I'm a fan of. I have no regrets!
Pretty awesome that as children we watched De Lancie on a show for adults (TNG) and as adults we are watching him on a show for children (FIM). :)
ReplyDeletenow he has both trekkers/trekkies and bronies after him...
ReplyDelete@ponydoraprancypants
ReplyDeletei so wish i could fav or like your comment.
I hated Q.... Damn @hole... This explains why I find Discord annoying...
ReplyDeleteI can't help but wonder if Hasbro made the link so obvious with the intent of yoinking some of the trek fandom into their own merchandising pool (if they did, I approve of the awesome idea).
ReplyDeleteThis guy is an absolute LEGEND. We have to pester the producers to make Discord a recurring character!
ReplyDeleteI had the thought a while ago that the possible Weird Al cameo that was being discussed a while ago could have meant a Weird Al Discord, which would be pretty fun. But having said that De Lancie really fits the role.
ReplyDeleteIt's official now, ponies are greater than Star Trek. xP
ReplyDeleteIf only Ricardo Montalban was still alive.
ReplyDeleteim a trekkie AND a bronie, neither is greater then the other, thats why they had to COMBINE!
ReplyDeleteI think one of my greatest desires would be to have Mr. de Lancie do an interview for EqD. I'm just so terribly curious about so many things.
ReplyDelete@DakotaI don't know you. But you...I never forget a face, Miss Sparkle.
ReplyDelete@Th3OriginalGing3r
ReplyDeleteWhat about Chris Judge (Teal'c) voicing a pony :)

ReplyDeleteWelcome to the afterlife Celestia, you're dead!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Bronys, John. Enjoy our insanity.
ReplyDeleteWhat did he actually say?
