ReplyDeleteWhat she's wearing is a plague mask and they really did look like that.
The 'beak' was filled with fragrant herbs to protect the doctor from the miasmas that caused disease[1]. By luck they actually did have some protective effect, as they did act as a crude filter mask.
[1] Which, as we now know, was completely wrong. But germ theory and John Snow, (of Broad St. pump handle fame), were still some centuries in the future.
