• Story: Witch of the Westmareland

    [Adventure][Comedy][Crossover][Light Shipping]

    Author: Colour Coded Chaos
Description: When Applejack's nailed by a falling rowan tree whilst taking part in the Running of the Leaves, she thinks it's bad enough being, well, nailed by a falling rowan tree. But when a raven lands on her windowsill and tells her to go somewhere that sort of doesn't exist in two days or she'll snuff it with a fairly sizeable explosion, and Ditzy Doo gets dragged into the mess, everyone's favourite orange farm pony has to go a-questin'. This can only end well...

This is a crossover with a medieval folk ballad called The Witch of the Westmoreland, or rather the extended ballad version penned by Archie Fisher and sung by the late Stan Rogers. Have a dandy link to what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqGv2l5bJr4&feature=related

    5. A folk song crossover, and of a song I know.

      This should be good!

    9. This? Excellent.

...there's just so many funny parts I don't know where to start but all of them are potentially spoilers.

A kazoo! Derpy! A sonic muffboom! Shipping! Winona!

    10. Ditzy Doo and Applejack? Going on a quest? Based on a medieval folk ballad? With light shipping?

      ...*reads*

    11. I've already just begun reading this and already there's been a rather huge slip up.

Earth Pony Magic I'm pretty sure doesn't work that way. I dunno, maybe I just interpret what Lauren Faust said differently, but I always got the impression that Earth Pony Magic gives the Earth Ponies enhanced strength and durability. Not that Earth ponies are dryads and sow seeds wherever they tread.

And Unicorns being incapable of planting a seed and letting it grow? That seems... unlikely.

Also, what makes Rowan sap so special that it "messes up Earth Pony Magic?"

    12. Good story. I couldn't help but notice that Ditzy was referred to as Derpy in the narrative, despite the fact that the nickname is apparently a very touchy subject for her.

    13. A worthy match for both the song and the series. Well done!

    14. Very interesting read. I like the idea of doing a crossover with a folktale, and there's quite a bit of excellent humor in here. My only problem is that the two don't always seem to mesh well--reading about a pony who's lived for a thousand years in NMM-imposed darkness and an AJ-centered betting pool in the same fic induced a bit of mood whiplash.

Still, all the individual elements of the story worked well, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't glad to have read this. Good job!

It's explained in the narrative, and whilst it's a deviation from the script (as it were) since this is a crossover and we're told what it's about it works.

Rowan trees are one of those held to be "magical" so it makes sense in Equestria that they are. The comedic outcome for being "too full of life" made me giggle.

For me the mood whiplash worked - it's a comedy adventure like "the princess bride" and it doesn't always take itself so seriously.

If trees power earth pony magic, then don't you think that AJ - purveyor of fine apples and apple accessories - would be a very powerful earth pony when needed?

Derpy and AJ shipping? What is this I don't even....

    17. Good to see you've made the grade; too bad that the confrontation with the FPS was edited out to meet the size restrictions.

    18. @showmetheblueprints: It isn't. Well, it sort of isn't.

@DreadedCandiru2: Yeah, it is a bit of a shame. Then again, that idea works better as either a throwaway gag or as a fic in its own right. Guess which one I'm doing...

yeah, I didn't get to read the version with that in, but I'm glad it got left out. It's a different story altogether, really.

    20. This was good, just a few things i didn't like. As a poster above pointed out, Ditzy was called Derpy in the narrative even though she hates that name, Celestia drinks brandy? didn't seem to fit. Ditzy's sugar rush was unneeded, since you dont actually get a rush of energy from too much sugar. And mostly i didn't much care that Applejack basically got raped by the witch and was okay with it and it made her see that she needed to confess to Rainbow Dash, who didnt seem to care (along with the rest of the cast) that she fucked another pony, even though she had feelings for her. Also it had the very cliche fanfic habit of making one pony suddenly kiss another to show her feelings, instead of just saying it, happens in almost every shipfic. The betting pool at the was kind of out of no where and didnt seem to fit into this story. And really? sonic muffboom?...

Other than that i like most of it.

    21. Was that... a Barrett's Privateers reference?

other than that, the story was great! I loved it! I actually laughed audibly several times. Well done!

The Ditzy/Derpy thing is something I noted too.

Everything else can be explained by the fact that the story has a [Comedy] tag. Because, you know, they were jokes. And, also:

      > implying that the scene in the story was rape.

I liked this. It took a little while for it to really grab my attention, and the Ditzy/Derpy angst was pretty out of place considering the way the narrative itself was structured, but otherwise it was enjoyable enough. 4/5, I say.

Yes. Yes it was. Well spotted.

    24. I feel a need to do a reading of this. Simply because it is a crossover with a medieval folk ballad. (Clearly I won't sing it as it lacks a proper meter for singing.) It feels so right for this to be available to listen to.

Do post a link here when you're done, old thing. I'd love to hear it... I'd have done one myself but my recording equipment does not exist.

    26. @Cassie Truman, Okay, I had to put the recording on hold for a bit, but I should be able to find some time now that I'm moved into my dorm room.

    27. @Freeze Frame That's absolutely fine. Again, drop me a link when you're done, and if you've got any fics I'd be happy to reciprocate now that I've a webcam as actually works.
