I have nothing to say so i´ll say nothing.
ReplyDeleteHmm...i'll read.
ReplyDelete*Story (supposedly) not using Doctor Whooves character interpretation for Background Pony*
ReplyDelete*Story has to be labeled with a "Dr. Whoof" tag anyways because that is fan nickname*
shrugpony.jpg
I'll give it a look, though.
I BET DR WHOOF TOLD YOU TO WRITE THIS SO WE WOULDNT THINK IT WAS HIM!!!
ReplyDelete@Axisof3vil
ReplyDeleteyes, you got me. you win a cookie.
So the doctor has an alternate alias to hide his real identity. I never figured him to take the Super Man rout :P
ReplyDelete@MisterBull
ReplyDeleteWell all that attention would get a tad annoying after a while don't you think?
$10 says he is a pony version of Sylar
ReplyDelete>Story: Sepia Tock
ReplyDeleteI READ THAT SO WRONG. I thought I was gonna have to smack a Brony.
I read this before it popped up here, really liked it, this is one of the few other ways i quite like Dr. Whooves to be done. not to mention the Tom Baker scarf reference, i loved that.
ReplyDeletepoor Mr.Tock. He gets mistaken for a celebrity who fights aliens all over the multiverse. Nopony believes who he really is.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the Doctor had to put his Timelord conciousness into the fog watch again and become a regular human ... pony.
ReplyDeleteEither that or Seth has finally managed to hammer home his hatred for Doctor Whoof and people are doing different things ... is that even possible?
Oh god, this is family of blood all over again, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteCalling it now. Calling it now.
I'll give it a read. I like the idea of Mr. Hourglass having a show appropriate background.
ReplyDeleteInteresting read. I'm gonna need more of this.
ReplyDeleteHmm interesting indeed. I like this idea.
ReplyDelete@BlueBreeze
ReplyDeletethat's my plan, yes.
i think it should be noted i'm a whovian, and didn't here about seth hating doctor whoof until after i published this.
If nothing else CWD, you're getting points for novelty here.
ReplyDeleteWE'VE GOT YOU NOW DOCTOR WHOOVES!!!!! *quickly runS off to find Pinkie and ask her about her time machine she said sge made ince* *remembers that its Pinkie and the only one who understamds her is Dash* *trtos back* Crap.....
ReplyDeleteAaaaaand that made no sense. Sorry evetypony D:
ReplyDeleteSilly Seth, everything is a Doctor Whooves fanfic.
ReplyDeleteIt's a silly question, but do you mind if I induct the concept and character of Sepia Tock into my fanonverse?
ReplyDeleteI've already got alternate interpretations of Ditzy Doo, Lyra and Colgate, defying the popular opinion of those characters, and I'd like to have Dr. Whoof but w/o Dr. Whoof in my fic.
From just these two great chapters, I've become enamored with Sepia Tock, and would like to include him.
@Fawfulcopter
ReplyDeleteoh yes, my evil secret goal is to replace Doctor Whoof in Fanon with Sepia. feel free to use him.
that goes for anyone.
You genius. Create a story using Doctor Whoof, but do the exact opposite of what the entire community has done and create a realistic background Pony that the creators would probably jump at the chance to use. People have to read it because of its outright uniqueness and its allure of "different", and a new character is born!
ReplyDeleteFRIGGING GENIUS.
Begun, the fanon wars have...
I laughed like a total idiot reading this, and I loved doing so.
ReplyDeleteThis was pretty awesome. I hope you're planning more! I especially liked how they just randomly started calling him the Doctor one day and Luna playing with sock puppets. ^_^
ReplyDeleteConfession time: I haven't read a single Doctor Whoof fic.
ReplyDeleteThis, however, I found highly entertaining. It's well written and the references to fanon are strictly tongue-in-cheek. I approve and eagerly await more.
There has to be something later on in the story. To give him his Timelord memories back. Because some of the ponies know who he really is. Applebloom, The Mayor, and Derpy.
ReplyDelete@SonGoharotto
ReplyDeleteconfession time: i haven't read any fan fiction. what i have i picked up from fan art, the wiki, and tv tropes.
I keep waiting for Sepia to see some broken pocket watch he mysteriously has no interest in fixing ;)
ReplyDeleteHey, beat me to it! I was thinking of writing that one.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI love how people can't wrap their heads around a fic that doesn't portray this one pony as Dr. Whooves.
ReplyDeleteOf course this means if you end up turning this into a Dr. Whooves story, I'm now going to look like the only idiot who didn't see it coming.
@Bonsai
ReplyDeleteIt would be a lot easier to accept this as a not-the-Doctor story if CanvasWolfDoll didn't keep hitting us over the head with it. As it is, it feels like he's up to something.
That said, I really enjoyed the story, and I loved the business with Luna and her crazy puppets at the end of part 2. The issue of who you think you are versus who everyone else sees you as is an interesting one, and if that's the basis of his friendship with Luna -- and the reason for all the Doctor business -- then cool.
One small nitpick: many of the descriptions use the passive voice, such as Colgate's actions; "answered by Colgate" and so forth. It would be better to say "Colgate answered the bell."
You know, there was that whole Dr. Who arc where the doctor stopped being a timelord... with a watch.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't understand why Doctor Whoof is the one fan pony that some people seem determined on replacing. It's seems quite silly to me.
ReplyDeleteNot to be whatever saying "I thought something before anyone" would be called in one word; but I never completely thought of Dr. Whooves as that exact same colt. (If you don't want to read a long argument justifying this, stop reading now.)
ReplyDeleteWhat I mean is, while the doctor DOES take the form of whatever he is taking the form of, he doesn't take the entire body along for it. He regenerates and usually uses whoever is nearby as a kind of biologocal blueprint. So while Sepia Tock is manning his clock shop, Doctor Whooves is out doing whatever the heck Doctor Whooves is doing(so many things he could be doing). Also, because the Doctor can never come across himself, he logically can't come across Sepia Tock if he is essentially using a copy of Sepia Tock's body. *exhales* Phew.
>Description: Sepia Tock
ReplyDelete-What kind of name is this ?
Why not 'Sepia CLOCK', this would have been better, and made more sense.
Exactly!
ReplyDeleteDoctor Whooves just coincidentally regenerated into someone who looks like Sepia Tock
Just like how The Doctor regenerated into David Tennant.
Yeah, srsly.
@Nova25 *Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, ding!*(clock noises)
ReplyDelete@DantE.MusT.DIE Thank you!
The idea is awesome, but I have to admit that most of my amusement while I was reading stemmed from the fact of him NOT being Doctor Whoof, and how utterly peaceful (or boring) his days are in comparison. If you actually intended him to replace the Whoof character I don't think it has a chance because there isn't much to hold one's interest about the character. If you intended him as a total contrast to Whoof, though, then he is perfect.
ReplyDeleteSupposing that you don't already have a plan for where you'll go with the character (like the mentioned "Human Nature" route), I think he has the best chance to work if you keep the existence of the FICTIONAL Whoof as a permanent part of his character. Will he grow accustomed to the role that is expected of him? Learn to live up to it? Fight against it? That's a story I'd like to see.
Liked the Brigadier reference in this one. Also makes me wonder just why they keep calling him 'Doctor'..
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the third chapter, I can only say 2 things.
ReplyDelete1: This is a really good story.
2: Sepia has a unicorn fetish.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete"So, my concept is this: we find a popular character from fanon, but portray him as aware and loatheful of his reputation," a brown pegasus pitched to his peers.
ReplyDelete"That's a horrible idea. Go bother somepony else," an earth pony, clearly the leader of the troupe, told the writer.
Sepia is going to be in the play. Also I can see that the writer put that a little something in this new chapter. HIMSELF.
ReplyDeleteThis story is fantastic! I love the idea of completely changing the identity of a fanon character while at the same time incorporating the popular fanon into the story through the town's rumors and speculation. The characterization is excellent and there were some brilliant moments of comedy throughout (the "regurgitation" line in the first chapter made me openly laugh out loud, as well as the self-reference to fanon characters in chapter three).
ReplyDeleteSo does this mean we need a story where Lyra gets fed up with everypony thinking she's married to Bon-Bon and does weird unponylike things, and Ditzy wondering why everything thinks she has a muffin fetish and a daughter?
ReplyDeleteEither it's a clever red-herring... or that watch he just sold away had a certain definitive importance and will soon cause problems.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the former, but it's hard to tell sometimes with this fic.
@Melodia
ReplyDeleteIf you read the first part closely, that's already this fic, with Derpy liking muffins but not sure why people are always giving them to her, and Lyra complaining that sitting oddly one time left her with a reputation for sitting like that.
My face when he got to the top of the clock tower http://mylittlefacewhen.com/f/178/.
ReplyDeletewho is willing to bet this will end with some kind of chameleon arch type of plot (see family of blood / human nature)
ReplyDeleteGiven that little bit at then end there... I'd say this is either going the Fob Watch route or the Real Doctor Whoof, who will just so happen to be a dead ringer for Sepia Tock, is about to show up. :D
ReplyDeleteWhat a great ending.
ReplyDeleteIt gives us stuff that the Dr. Whoof was a play and the fact that this Sepia tries to pass himself off as "Not being the Doctor"
Anyways The Real Dr. Whoof will show up.
Really good story. I like the origionality of the idea. Can't wait to read more, though there is one thing...I thought August was in Autumn not Summer.
ReplyDeleteStill can't decide if he did the fogwatch thing or if everything that's happening are just amazing coincidences.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, Sepia and Colgate's relationship gives me vibes of Phoenix and Maya's relationship from Ace Attorney...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i'm loving this story.
@Cony the PonyA= Summer doesn't end until late September. From a business stand point, Labor Day (the first Monday of September) is the unofficial end of Summer. August is firmly planted in the Summer season.
ReplyDeleteThat ending... chapter 4, you little tease you! I like where this is going. A LOT. But I hope it doesn't leads to a "real" Dr. Whooves appearance. I would love if Sepia, through circumstance and personal interests, somehow steps up and has an adventure, earning his Dr. Whooves praise...
ReplyDeleteor something. update soon please
Love the story.
ReplyDeleteI have a favour to ask of the author though. Mind if I proofread it and fix up the grammar?
@Jack of Games
ReplyDeleteOh, so it's an American thing? Never realised that the summer months were different over there.
I think it focuses a bit too much on the Doctor Whooves thing, it comes up so often that it sounds preachy.
ReplyDelete@Specter Von Baren
ReplyDeleteyea, i know... should get cut down now the plot itself is about to get rolling. hopefully, anyways, can't make any solid promises.
@Canvas Wolf Doll
ReplyDeletejust wanted to say I love this so far, I hope it continues being awesome.
it's odd how a mundane character can be so endearing.
I've been keeping up with this from the moment it came up on EqD, every chapter just gets better and better. Though I suppose that's in part because you just mentioned Octavia. ^_^
ReplyDelete@VozDeSuenos
ReplyDeletejust mentioned? she's alluded to in every chapter except two!
I love this, it's well written, main character has an excellent personality, it uses a plethora of background ponies facing their stereotypes, its just excellent.
ReplyDeleteThe humor is great while not being ridiculous. I also like the monk reference (Every chapter named Mr. Tock and (whatever happens in this chapter))
This is definitely one fic I'll be checking for updates daily.
Why do I like this?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea.
Why did I have to read the whole thing in one sitting?
I have no idea.
Why am I suddenly excited about the next update?
I have no idea.
What have you done to me!?
I usually only like high energy stories with deep and emotional subject matter, yet I LOVE this. DAMN YOU! You have altered my brain! I love this and I don't know why!
. . . keep it up . . . please
you know what my favorite part of reading these comments is? reading all the caught references. especially my unintended ones! yea!
ReplyDeleteI really do love this story :D. I do hope that Sepia doesn't turn out to be the real Doctor Whooves.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind it terribly if he is, but having him getting pulled into strange adventures just because of his reputation is a lot more fun xD.
Not going to lie... he's handling this awfully well for NOT being Doctor Whoof...
ReplyDeleteThen again, Zanzibar has a point. It does sound fun for him to get pulled into a ton of wacky adventures just due to his false reputation... except then, after a point, once he's had enough timey-wimey adventures, wouldn't his reputation end up becoming a reality thereby making him Doctor Whooves after all/eventually?
Gah... me brains... >_<
'sepia' reminds me of cuddlefish. Before I read, is the story about cuddlefish in any way?
ReplyDeleteNow it's really certain Doctor Whoof is Sepia. I'm not spoiling it at all. I sees it how I sees it.
ReplyDeleteI love how this story is developing. Gotta love the someone who gets pushed into being a hero even if they don't want it. The characters are well developed, and extremely entertaining, especially Colgate. This are so many things that this story just does right.
ReplyDeleteAlso, this latest chapter (part 5) completely explains the duplicates of background ponies in all of the crowd scenes throughout the show. Love it!
"Sepia Tock is an artisan, friend, and citizen of Ponyville. He is not, however, Doctor Whoof."
ReplyDeleteYou've got that right...
His name is "Doctor Whooves"! XD
@Mike
ReplyDeleteno idea what that even means...
Well, dang. It just turned into another Doctor Whooves fic. And here I was hoping for something original.
ReplyDeleteI still believe they are two separate ponies. I think that somepony who is an enemy of the Doctor has mistaken Tock for the Doctor. Also, if the Doctor were to try to help Sepia, something paradox-y will happen, so he can't do anything just yet.
ReplyDelete@Son Goharotto
ReplyDeleteThat's not really fair, Son. It's still pretty original.
sepia refers to the ink used by cuttlefish (as well as octopi/squid)
ReplyDelete@Eric
ReplyDeletehuh, the more you know i guess.
nah, it's a reference to his coloring.
Really enjoying this, and shaping up to be quite a fun adventure too!
ReplyDeleteHow much this story "flies against fanon" seems to be blurring with every chapter.
ReplyDeleteEither way it goes, I'm still enjoying it though, so that's a good sign :)
Sepia started this whole business now it's up to him to finish it. What is our unlikely hero going to do.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Sepia Tock isn't Doctor Whooves. I like Sepia Tock. If another pony is the Doctor, I would be okay with this. I just want Sepia Tock to be Sepia Tock, Ponyville's clock maker. Also I love the explanation for the duplicate ponies in chapter five, golden.
ReplyDeleteSigh, I hope its not just another fogwatch story, because I was really enjoying sepia, if he is the doctor it kinda defeats the original intentions I saw.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting if this all ended up in Sepia being the one who started the rumors that he was Doctor Whooves. Wibbly wobbly timey wimey.
ReplyDeleteStill, I'm thinking he's going to stumble upon a strange blue box in the woods rather soon ;)
Spoilers.
ReplyDeleteWow, when you gave the watch power over time, I was worried that he really was Doctor Who, but in the end you made it all out marvellously!
Now I really hope he will succumb to using the powers for something cool :D.
Nice. Sepia Tock gets to play the Doctor at last without actually becoming the Doctor. Well played!
ReplyDeleteSo is this the end, or can we expect more from Sepia? I will say, this would be a fine place to end the story, but I wouldn't mind more if you've got more on the way...
@John
ReplyDeletemore on the way. got a few loose ends to tie up, and some final jokes to tell. should his done by tonight.
Sepia Tock. Well he is a good guy to play off the doctor while not being the Doctor. Add to the fact that Master Raggy. Yes I'm going to call him that. Wanted to show case his power by defeating the Doctor once in for all.
ReplyDeleteGood ending, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up, was a good read. it was interesting to read somethnig that goes against the fandom, so props for that
ReplyDeleteI bet he's famous for his golden pocket watches.
ReplyDeleteAlso...

What is this I don't even.
Thank you for this Canvas. Thank you for keeping him Sepia Tock, we need more Sepia Tocks. I like how in the middle you casted doubt on most of us, that was good.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever write a fanfic, you can be certain Sepia Tock will be there telling ponies that he isn't the Doctor.
Thank you for a wonderful story.
"Sepia Tock never was going to Doctor Whoof."
ReplyDeleteSo I guess we call me Captain Picard then LOL. Sorry I had too. Anyways I like the story a lot, the Villain is cheesy though. And Sepia Tock just needed not to be reminded that he is the doctor. What if the Doctor is Sepia Tock though. That would blow my mind.
I can't wait for the next chap-aww...
ReplyDelete*applauds* Quite an enjoyable story - I'm glad I read it.
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty fun, good work!
ReplyDeleteThat was fun. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more interaction between Trixie, Luna and Sepia. I take it I'd have to write that myself. Doubt that will happen anytime soon. I'm not a Dr Whoof fan, I avoid those fics. Naturally, I jumped on this one. Anyway... Twas a good read. Thanks for writing it ^^
ReplyDeletethis is, in my opinion, like taking derpy and calling her metally challenged pony because you dont like the fanon character (which is technically now canon)
ReplyDeleteOh gods, even when he is not the Doctor, he is the Doctor.
ReplyDeleteYou can't tell me, with that characterization, with those speech patterns, with the way he defeated the villain, that this is not the Doctor if he wasn't a time lord but simply a normal pony clockmaker.
sigh...
ReplyDeletewhatever. i wrote my story, tried to convey my interpretation, but i guess i'll just be forced to bow to the 'death of the author' argument.
and i hate the 'death of the author' argument...
A little sad to see the story completed, but it was a wonderful ride while it lasted. I think you did an excellent job playing with the fanon of Doctor Whoof. I actually got into the fandom after hearing about Doctor Whoof, so the character has a special place in my heart, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Sepia Tock on his adventures. Well done, sir, well done.
ReplyDelete@Eric
ReplyDeletehey, same here! it's because doctor whoof was created by fans that initially interested me, and why i eventually got disappointed that he existed solely as a cross-fandom in-joke.
I really enjoyed it!! I'm sad it's over, but you wrapped it up really well and it had a satisfying ending. Thanks for the excellent story.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very enjoyable story. I agree with the sentiment that the Doctor doesn't really fit in the show-verse, and while I originally thought this would be a completely different interpretation of the character (i.e. a Doctor-less story), Sepia having to constantly face that idea was hilariously entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you used the time bubbles to explain all of the background ponies, and I especially enjoyed Sepia's becoming the originator and propagator of his own myth, in particular that his galloping through all of the bubbles became his being on different adventures.
The juxtaposition of his mundane personality and life with what is expected of him, and the role he ultimately fulfills is a blast.
Dear CanvasWolfDoll,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great read. I wish I could expand on that a bit more, but I can't think of how to put what I'm thinking into words.
Sincerely,
Clockwise Gear
@CanvasWolfDoll
ReplyDeleteThis, this right here is how you write a fanfic!
This is such a good story that I WILL animate it into an official looking (fan made) episode. Maybe even make it a two parter.
That being said, I will not likely have the skill to do so until I get father into my animation degree. (it may take a while. Like 4-8 years. But I never go back on my word and I will do it. (unless somepony else does it first and does a good job.))
Side note, do you get paid for all that writing ability? You should. Maybe we can get you onto the official FiM team so you can start writing episodes...
"I mean, I sit oddly one time to crack my back, and I get a reputation."
That was win. As well as the food in the fridge one.
Thank you for gracing the world with this masterpiece.
Further into*
ReplyDelete@Cloud Runner
ReplyDeletethank you so much for your kind words. and a sepia tock animation would be delightful to watch.
unfortunately, no, i don't currently get paid to write. i'd like to, but for now it's merely a hobby of mine.
I was sort of secretly hoping that maybe Colgate would have gone ahead and made a tin wind-up Dalek just to spite him.
ReplyDelete@waffle911
ReplyDeletewell, i've started working on a colgate vignette so... that might happen...
That deserves to be made into a movie. Doesn't have to be ponies; humanized (have David Tennant or a look-alike play Sepia), set it renaissance Europe... maybe Nordic... Really. It was great and needs to be seen.
ReplyDelete@Gekkey
ReplyDeletei don't know. that'd require a bit of set up for the 'doctor whoof' stand-in myth, which isn't something i'm sure i could do well enough.
the reason i did as well as i did was the preexistence of doctor whoof within the community, and my knowledge of both source material. take both of those away, and i'd wouldn't be able to make nearly half the jokes i did, let alone properly do the ragnarok arc.
at best, they only place this can go is further brony projects. hopefully, the two i currently i know of will manage to happen.
I absolutely love this story... you never know whether Sepia Tock really is the Doctor or not, especially when they start dropping references to the Dr. Who episode "Human Nature". It's a magnificent piece of storytelling.
ReplyDeleteOh, Canvas Wolf Doll is such a doctor who fan.
ReplyDeleteEven did a Christmas special, just like doctor who does every year.
It was an enjoyable read, somewhat similar to how the main story progressed.
@Nyte_Crawler
ReplyDeletein fact, i was watching the special from last year when i came up with this. then i was all 'dang it, i said i wasn't going to do a sequel because i haven't a clue what to do'.
so, true my word, i had to write it.
This was the last story I expected an update from, until I thought about it and remembered all the Christmas episodes from the new Doctors.
ReplyDeleteNice Xmas special, was hoping you would do one. Now, time to watch this years Dr Who special... Again. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved it. This guy knows how to tell a good story. Nothing more to be said. Just read it.
ReplyDeleteI adore these characters. Sepia is my favorite fanon pony. Nyx can go strait to the moon.
I saw the words "Christmas Special" and thought "OH NOES! Something's attacking again!? o.O"
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read it. I do so love this story.
The author of this story is a genius. A god-tier genius. He had me guessing and second-guesing the whole way through.
ReplyDeletePlus, I love that Colgate was Sepia's apprentice - seeing as how she's sometimes referred to as Romana by fans.
Oh, and the story maks me want to make pony hourglasses.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finally becoming canon!
ReplyDelete@Storm Chaser thanks for the thought, but personally i'll wait until we see him run a clockshop and/or make a timepiece. as it stands, it's a bit too vague to call.
ReplyDelete...is the chapter derped? it leads to "Daring Do and the Eastern Star"
ReplyDeleteseqqqqqquuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeeel
ReplyDeletenot sequel? really don't get why is leads to daring do, unless Do roll'd
ReplyDeletefix'd? http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8111568/1/The_Further_Adventures_of_Sepia_Tock_the_Ponyville
ReplyDeleteYeah, it links to a different story of the author's.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it's an amusing sequel so far, but it just feels like it goes....too fast or something.
sorry about the wrong story link. i copy and pasted a form from a previous email, and when i changed the link, it would seem it changed the text, but kept it linked to the daring do story. which is a weird quirk for gmail, but i've emailed a link correction. hopefully it'll be fixed soon. until then, proper story link:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fanfiction.net/s/8111568/1/The_Further_Adventures_of_Sepia_Tock_the_Ponyville
It is good but I have one criticism.
ReplyDeletePage breaks. Otherwise it is very confusing to read.
oh. oh snap. i forgot ff.net didn't translate the page breaks. i'm sorry.
ReplyDeleteCan I assume this is going to continue? Because to put it bluntly, the end of the chapter was rather rushed.
ReplyDelete@Nyte_Crawler
ReplyDeleteyes, it'll continue. eventually.
Awesome to see this story didn't just up and die. Sepia is a great character, and a good example of how going against what's already set up in the fandom can be done right.
ReplyDeleteI actually really quite liked that chapter. Colgate becoming the new "Dr." was something I didn't expect, and it was great. I'm almost a little disappointed that it looks like there won't be much more of it, but it's best to keep the story moving, and chapters of just Colgate running a clock store while being mistaken for the Dr. would get old fast.
ReplyDeleteWhere does one get gears?
ReplyDelete
