Over on Welovefine's Soarin' Tee shirt page, Amy Rogers (A Writer for FiM) dropped this in the comment section. Apparently Soarin' was named after her son.
Now, any brony who has a kid now will name their child Soren 'cause naming them 'Celestia' or 'Pinkie Pie' will sound stupid. Maaabye ... as a nickname or something but I seriously doubt any of the Mane 6 would be suitable.
I imagine her son would be too young to understand the sheer awesome that comprises him wearing a Soarin' shirt when he himself was the inspiration for his name.
@shibboleth Just call your future son Jack, or for something a bit more exotic, Ajax. You don't have to tell him he's named for a pony that harvest apples.
@shibboleth AJ works for girls or boys, Tavia is a girls name, Soren is now officially and forever linked to MLP, Lauren, Jason, Seth, Phoebe, (got nothing for Cereal), Luna wouldn't be much of a stretch for a girl (alternately Lu for boys), Lyra is perfect, and Bonnie, Trixie could work (although I might leave "the Great and Powerful" off the birth certificate), Spike would be a badass name for a kid to have, Rose, Angel, Lily, and Daisy off the top of my head.
There's badassery and mythology to be in found every nook and cranny of this show, isn't there?
Also, Pinkie Pie says "Oakey Dokey Loki". Loki is in actual fact related to Norse mythology, if I remember correctly, Loki was a shapeshifter who assumed the form of a horse at one point, and had a tendency to be a prankster.
Perhaps our favourite marshmallow-like ponies descended from Viking ponies, but then again there is a lot of Greek mythology to be found, too.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000532/ approves. He played Dr. Tolian Soran in Star Trek: Generations, a great actor and villain in a mediocre franchise film. He beats TWO starship captains in an away mission fist fight and kills Kirk. Just adding to that badass quotient
Thats such a sweet name!! I can't remember if Soarin was amoung the many "jokey" names we were thinking of to name our kids when we actually HAD kids xD''''
That's what I'm sayin'. It ticks me how how everyone references the monsters in this show to dungeons and dragons, when most the stuff (including Pegasus and unicorns) is from historical mythology.
Wait, a pony named after a person and not the other way around??? Kim Fluttershy Dykas and Rainbow Alexi Dash can only WISH their parents had been this cool.
I can only hope for his sake that the kid actually likes the show his awesome and talented mother worked on as he grows up...

Am I first?
ReplyDeleteHah! So when folks were spelling it "Soren", they were right for the wrong reasons. -;)
ReplyDeleteI wonder what she thinks about the shipfics including Soarin'.
ReplyDelete....How badass.
ReplyDeleteI actually know a guy named Soren. I never made the mental connection between that word and Soarin'
ReplyDeletebut this still doesn't answer the question...IS THE CHARACTER'S NAME SPELLED "SOARIN'" OR "SOREN"?!?
ReplyDeleteThat's a badass name for a kid to have.
ReplyDelete...I like that name.
ReplyDeleteNICE MOVE, AMY.
ReplyDeleteb(^.^)d
This is epic. Naming a character in a TV show you're animating after your son. That is like, awesome. Seriously! :3
@CogWeaver
ReplyDeleteSeems pretty obvious it's Soarin'

My brother's name is Soren. It's a Swedish name meaning "Friend of Thor". Just turned the badass up a notch.
ReplyDeleteSo, apparently the writers for FiM are Kierkegaard fans? Neat.
ReplyDeleteThis may help to contextualize "Feeling Pinkie Keen", now as I think on it...

ReplyDeleteYes, it does. He says twice the pegasus' name is "Soarin'".
Okay, now I get to use my Soarin joke finally...
ReplyDeleteYo dawg... oh, forget it. It's lost it's luster at this point. Still, it is cool indeed. :)
What a random way to broadcast how he got his name. :D
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, though; I wonder what her kid thinks about that.

@Streek471
ReplyDeleteI agree, but can you even fathom how badass it would be to have a child whose name is Spitfire?

Ugh,silly me,I completely missed the name of the site *facepalm*
ReplyDeleteBut this still leaves an extremely vital question unanswered:
ReplyDeleteDoes Soren love apple pie?
Or does he just love pies in general?
@Nightowl3090
ReplyDeleteMight as well be from the danish "Søren" (which is lead from Severin/Severinus) meaning serious or strict.
@Mattatatta
Loki's been all over the place.

ReplyDeleteThat's funny, I always spelled his name "Soren" until I saw the majority of the fandom was using "Soarin'" and changed my spelling to fit.

Didn't we already knew this? I think someone already told us where his name comes from...
ReplyDeleteOr you could just have a ginger kid and refer to them as Carrot Top.
ReplyDeleteSeems to work for MY family. *grumble*
Thats my brother in Laws name.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.welovefine.com/product.php?id_product=660 here it is

ReplyDelete-Pfff, my Mom will bring me and my friends to the amusement park tomorrow.
