• Q&Neigh: Volume II

We're back, whether you like it or not!

It's been a journey, ponies. The forces at work did not want this podcast to happen. There were setbacks. There was drama. There was action. Through it all, we prevailed, and this is the result.

In all seriousness, this is the result of hours of thrown-out work because of both technical difficulties and three tired blog ponies. The final result is something all three of us are very proud of, so, we invite you to listen. For comedy's sake, though, I have also saved three bloopers from the first (unused) recording session, in case you want to hear me swear a lot. Not to say that the podcast isn't comedic. Actually, if it isn't, we did it wrong. But it is. Trust me. It's magical.

Links and bloopers after the break.

*Seth Edit*: Phoe and I would like to let everyone know that we eventually did come to a compromise on the final question, but we hit the limit on time mid argument and had to cut it off.  It took us a half an hour of debate post-recording, but we finally agreed upon a way that it would indeed work in the FiM universe.  We will include it in the next podcast, but feel free to toss your input in the comments.

    Also have PHOE'S NIGHTLY ROUNDUP.

    Q&Neigh #2 by Cereal Velocity

Blooper Reel: 1 | 2 | 3        (NSFW WARNING: Censored swearing. All from Cereal.)

Just in case anypony is confused as to who is talking, the guys at Bronyville said I should lead this time, so I (Cereal) am the one doing the intro, Seth is the guy that sounds like Michael Cera, and Phoe is the girl.

Links we talked about during the show:

    Phoe's Fics

Soundcloud is kicking us out after this many minutes of podcasts. Anyone got any ideas for podcast hosting? I'd love to hear it.

Phoe, you are scaring me with that Lyra thing you have...

      VastaKustuta
    29. @Anonymous I believe this is the fic you're looking for: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/9/The-Greatest-Equine-Who-has-Ever-Lived%21

I think it was made only to test out FiM Fiction, not because he felt like writing one. I could be wrong though.

      VastaKustuta
    30. Phoe on BG pony becoming villain: "If Lyra donned her Trixie hat and cap..."

Oh sh-*caw*, you dun called down the wrath of Sethisto.

      VastaKustuta
    31. Lyra would do something like the Master in End of Time, she'd broadcast the sound of drums to bring back humans

That's probably it. Many thanks, you magnificent anon!

This is playing right now, but wanted to say that saxophone intro is straight-up baller.

Question for Phoe, if she's reading: would you recommend creative writing courses? I'm a reporter by trade, but I'm always looking at courses in creative writing, ad writing etc, because I think/hope being forced to write in different sorts of ways helps to improve your writing in general.

So, I guess I'm asking, did you enjoy it? Was it useful for you? Because there's a creative writing course starting near my work soon that I'm thinking of enrolling on.

      VastaKustuta
    34. Kimba the White Lion13. august 2011, kell 18:59

I completely agree with Phoe at minute 31. Having there actually be life outside the mane 6 would be an incredibly touch.

      VastaKustuta
    35. Over 90 minutes? And it's 4:05 AM. Fuck it, wasn't going to sleep anyway.

      VastaKustuta
    36. And there goes 1.5Hrs of my life..
      AND I LOVED IT!

Great stuff guys, I do enjoy these, and I agree with Seth, those pipe cleaner ponies are amazing!!

      VastaKustuta
    37. Gah, now I see you guys as ponies. Dammit.

      VastaKustuta
    38. Cotton? From sheep? Things really are different in Equestria.

      VastaKustuta
    39. Now you need to just have a podcast where you talk randomly about nothing in particular.

      VastaKustuta
    40. >Phoe having "card games" as a hobby.

...Is it wrong that I immediately thought of "CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES!!!" when she said that?

      Stupid internet... ;_;

    41. Kimba the White Lion13. august 2011, kell 19:15

You guys never included Phoe's nightly roundup. Anyone know which one it was?

      VastaKustuta
    42. Oh come on... Pepsi is nasty

      VastaKustuta
    43. for the rap argument: Run DMC
I don't like rap all that much, but I can listen to them.

      VastaKustuta
    44. also, Why does Phoe sound like Ellen Degeneres?

      VastaKustuta
    45. Guests would be awesome.

      VastaKustuta
    46. *resisting urge to go on music/rap rant*
OH I KNOW THE SONG YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!
OPM - Heaven is a Halfpipe!
      brilliant song

Also if you like weird bands, listen to some Primus
it will either blow your mind in the best way or the worst way

      VastaKustuta
    47. Random thoughts that crossed my mind while listening to the podcast.

Opening: Dat Music!! Flashbacks! (Not all bad! Ack!)
15 minute mark: Monochromatic is the word you're looking for Cereal ;)
20 minute mark: You guys like autotune?? Sad, so, sad.
22 minute mark: Seth, cotton is a PLANT! It does not come from sheep! (I think you are thinking about wool.)
29 minute mark: I'm agreeing with Phoe that they wrote the episodes in order, if just from the fact that later episodes reference previous episodes, but you don't see earlier episodes make call backs to episodes that were aired later on.
48 minute mark: I demand photos of Cereal and Phoe! Hmmm, I wonder if there's a reflection of Cereal in one of those Equestrian Innovation clips, I'll have to go look after listening to the podcast.
53 minute mark: Your conversation does nothing but fuel my desire for a pony based MMO. WE NEED ONE, NOW!!!
59 minute mark: Pinkie Pie as Minsc. "Go for the eyes, Gummy! GO FOR THE EYES!"
62 minute mark: That fic should be titled "The Shawflank Redemption" I don't know if it should or shouldn't star Luna. And yes Cereal, go watch that film NOW!!
68 minute mark: Don't struggle Phoe! Share some Arthurian legends that should be ponified!
85 minute mark: Sorry Seth, but Slice of Life is the best pony.

Many thanks for the three of you taking so much time out of your lives to answer our questions! It is greatly appreciated!

      VastaKustuta
    48. Cereal lives where I do???
      Another successful podcast
Ponies have taken over all our lives indeed

      VastaKustuta
    49. I'd rather spend a day with Fluttershy or Applejack, myself. Twilight Sparkle only if I didn't already know how to be a pony

      VastaKustuta
    50. I fully agree with Seth on Adventure arcs

      VastaKustuta
    51. I think guests would be pretty amusing and interesting and it would help vary things a little more.

I also think you should have one or two pony themed commercials dropped in the help break things up a bit.

I can't believe I've just spent my entire very early morning listening to the entirety of that. Ponies are taking over my life. It's 2.49AM, and I'm going to bed.

      VastaKustuta
    52. I think that you should get guests. that would be AWESOME

      VastaKustuta
    53. That was an incredibly entertaining 90 minutes.

To debate the final question: I think an adventure-style, wide-spanning story would work. But it wouldn't be the My Little Pony we all know and love. It works fine for fanfictions. Almost anything works for fanfiction. But I can't see it getting worked into the show successfully.

      VastaKustuta
    54. You know what's up, Cereal! I've got SWTOR pre-ordered already!

      VastaKustuta
    55. Finished. I love you guys and your tangential ramblings.

And Seth, I get where you're coming from with the adventure thing; something like It's A Dangerous Business... as a series would be cool. However, I think what Phoe was having reservations about was this adventure existing in the same universe/dimension as the main series. There'd obviously be the continuity issues (i.e. where does this occur in relation to the main series, etc.), and it'd be a pretty big stretch to try and mesh the two canons (slice-of-life and adventure) without some jarring transitions. Going back to It's A Dangerous Business..., for example, how would AJ, Dash, and Rarity possibly be able to go back to the slice-of-life style storytelling without some massive changes to the character interactions? Perhaps an adventure arc with a completely different cast and setting might work, but then you have to worry about wandering into the realm of "Is this MLP as we know and love it?"

Of course, the whole idea is hypothetical since, as it was pointed out, Hasbro would never be able to sell it to the target audience. That aside, it'd be EXTREMELY difficult to pull off well, but if the team could do it, I think it'd be interesting.

      VastaKustuta
    56. they use ponyester to make beds in equestria

      VastaKustuta
    57. :| Rainbow Dash is Holden Caulfield.

Mind = blown. Mind. Equals. Blown. Only, she was helping Apple Bloom to get her cutie mark that one time, which seems to run counter to Holden's (and Salinger's) whole "innocence-of-childhood" shtick. But the whole thing with Sonic Rainboom, when she's trying to recapture something she only managed in her youth? Classic.

Re: the adventure thing. In a perfect world, I'd be interested in watching some overarching continuity mixed in with the slice-of-life, but I feel like that could get a bit nihilistic (and not everyone likes that) - you know, it makes the day-to-day stuff seem valueless, since there's some sort of growing threat on the horizon that none of the characters are addressing.

More podcasts! And a reading by you guys would be interesting. I want you all to do accents.

      VastaKustuta
    58. Yay, you guys answered my question!
Except you pronounced my name wrong. This always happens! It sounds like "that again"!

Hmmm, as for adventure ponies, I think instead of working up to a large event like the Gala, it could start with a large event that reverberates through the rest of the season. Of course, it would take some clever writing to make it so you could watch the episodes out of order and still know what's going on.

I'll have to agree that I wouldn't like the whole thing to be one huge adventure. Rather, it'd be better if adventures happen, and leave memories and impressions. I think it's called "character development".

Wait what am I even talking about now? I kind of lost myself...

      VastaKustuta
    59. This was great, so, a lot better than I was expecting, and was a huge improvement over the last one. For a voice only podcast to hold my attention for over 90 minutes...It's just stunning, never thought it could happen. Please keep it up.

I vote for Slice of Life followed by 2 to 4 episode arcs like Dr. Who.

I would suggest not having the ponycast be 1.5 hours. I almost didn't listen to this but then I realized I could fold my laundry during this time. I think a 40 min ponycast would be a much more inviting time log.

      Also, ponycasts are SO AWESOME

      VastaKustuta
    62. Dramatic readings, guests, good good. I love you all. I just sat here for 93 minutes, not doing anything in particular aside from listening to this podcast, and I love you all.

      VastaKustuta
    63. Hooray for Dream Theater!

      VastaKustuta
    64. As far as the whole long over arching plot vs episodic. While I think a long story arch is certainly possible to do, especially since it has been done well in fanfics, I'm on side with Phoe in that with the current formula of what makes the show good it wouldn't really fit. I would love to see more multi part episodes that could have adventure based plots or like Phoe was saying something that is carefully built upon throughout random episodes of the season without being the main focus of things until the last few episodes when it all comes to a head would work very well.

      VastaKustuta
    65. Pause. Fuck you Voyager is awesome. Unpause.

      VastaKustuta
    66. That was great. Played some SSX Tricky and checked out the latest Drawfriend. Ponycasts could easily take over the spot of being my favorite posts from the Wallpaper Compilations if these continue.

I figure this is the place to ask this. I would like to know where the polls went? Polls were really what hooked me onto this site back in March and I kinda miss 'em.

      VastaKustuta
    67. I think the guest thing would be cool to get to know more about the community, and the dramatic reading thing would be cool for fun and to hear your opinions on stories.

The thing I want to know is if you were to do this then who would the community want to be guests in the podcasts, and what would they want you to dramatic read and comment on?

      VastaKustuta
    68. How do we get involved in the next Q&N?

      VastaKustuta
    69. what fluttershy song are they talking about?

      VastaKustuta
    70. @Tears of a Valedictorian

I have never for one moment regretted taking creative writing classes. You don't always get the nicest group of peers, but having the excuse and the drive to sit down and write and then go and discuss every little thing you did right and wrong is absolutely invaluable to somepony looking to take the next major leap with their writing.

When you're taking the course, be sure to keep an open mind. You're going to hear a lot of things you probably weren't prepared to hear, but if you take the time to let it all sink in and process, it will open up new doors and insights into not only the hows of your own writing, but the whys. And just as importantly, it forces you to practice. You won't regret enrolling, I promise.

      VastaKustuta
    71. I enjoyed listening to the podcast but I felt that Phoe talked too much at times. There were a couple periods during the podcast where Seth and Cereal were talking about something I wanted to hear more about, but then Phoe would interrupt and take over the conversation again. I'm not hating on Phoe or anything like that, she's all right, I just want more Seth and Cereal is all.

      VastaKustuta
    72. You guys should make this a podcast and put it on iTunes. :D

      VastaKustuta
    73. @Phoe

I appreciate this information very much.

      VastaKustuta
    74. In my opinion, season two (or three) should be like Kids Next Door.it has its own thing going on in each episode that isn't really very going with the main story but there is a subtle overarching story going on that everything that has happened eventually comes back to the main plot with some epic adventure.in other words season one where,(for instance) nightmare moon would have been regerating back from remnants of her being leftover and at the end must be taken down again.

      VastaKustuta
    75. wait when did lauren faust step down?!

      VastaKustuta
    76. I enjoyed the two hours it took me to listen to this. It was a very nice experience.

      @Phoe
And I back Phoe up here. If you really want to be serious about your writing, TAKE THE CLASSES. Granted, I'm only in high school, so I don't have the experience of College-level creative writing classes, but my high school creative writing class has helped SIGNIFICANTLY, even after a lot of stuff I got yelled at for and the likes.

Now... if only the classes could help conquer the dreaded Writers Block...

      VastaKustuta
    77. I can't believe I listened to 1,5 hour podcast about ponies and loved Every. Single. Minute. Of. It. You guys are great.

    81. Obviously, if Colgate was a villian she would travel back in time to various points of history (the first sonic, when Celestia first banished Nightmare Moon to the moon) and try to alter the time line to suit her own nefarious purposes.

Twilight and the rest of the mane six would follow, and attempt to stop her from altering the time line. In doing so they would explore much of Equestria's landscape and history.

Each episode would be at a differant place and time, thus putting the ponies in a unique situation and could perhaps balance the grand adventure while still giving each episode its own lesson and keeping that slice of life feel.

Possible idea for a fanfic. (strocks chin slowly while staring off in deep thought)

    84. I have several questions for the next podcast.

      1. What is your opinion of the fan interpretation of Pinkamina Diane Pie.

      2. Is there any game, novel, or television show that you do NOT want to see ponified.

      VastaKustuta
    85. I wouldn't mind hearing from a few of the pre-readers on questions related to fanfics.

      VastaKustuta
    86. Much enjoyable. :)

I'd like to hear about your guys' favorite fanfictions.

I'd love dramatic reading of Past Sins or Creeping Darkness!

      Sweet dreams y'all!!

      VastaKustuta
    87. I think the solution to the argument at the end is a MLP movie instead of a side-series.

      VastaKustuta
    88. You guys (and girl) play LoL eh? I'll help you fill in the ranks any time you need it. Though how I'm going to get your ign and how you're going to get my ign is a mystery I suppose.

      VastaKustuta
    89. So that's why Seth's writing quality is lower than Phoe or Cereal Velocity! Personally, I like to see effort being made just like both of them; and if effort is shown, I actually might incline to be more curious and see what's up, not just post the stuff down and quickly go to the next batch of stuff. This would be part of the reason why I tend to stay away from things like PMVs and sometimes (but very rarely) Nightly Roundups, since if writing is non-existent, images would be the only way to grab people.

Say - can anyone link to Phoe's attempt on the Nightly Roundup?

      VastaKustuta
    90. Debate about it in the comments? Absolutely!

Phoe nailed it, in that it would pretty much be exactly Avatar: The Last Airbender, except with ponies, so basically just n... wait a minute, that would be freaking awesome! Want so badly!

      VastaKustuta
    91. I guess he's more hip-hop than rap, but "SHAD" is a great artist to check out.

Plus, he did a song with "Hey Ocean!", which means he sang with Applejack and Rainbow Dash.

Great listen. Hope ya'll expand upon this in the future. Maybe get a standard format and possibly some guests, but I realize your bloggie lives are busy enough.

      ~Buddy Vox

      VastaKustuta
    92. Very well podcast once again you three. Now, I do have one thing to say about that last tid bit you argued over. About either a "slice of life" or "adventure" style story, though I may be wrong, I feel as though all the episodes were a adventure, cause you see, all the episodes revolve around one thing; friendship. And friendship is an adventure in itself.

Twilight writes a letter to Celestia after each episode about what she and the others have learned, for each episode there is something to be learned. That is what makes an adventure to me; that the characters learn something. So really, there is already some sort of sub-plot adventure going on in the show, learning the magic of friendship!

      VastaKustuta
    93. Cereal's an Electric Six fan? Oh SHIIIIIT. My second-or-third-favourite band.

      VastaKustuta
    94. This was great - no dramatic reading please though. At least don't do it in the main thingy, because I have no interest in fanfiction, and I'm probably not the only one.

Other than that, ya, major probs, it was a great listen. Especially when compared to the first episode, which were incredibly bad. All in all I'm glad this a second try. Keep up the great work ponies!

      VastaKustuta
    95. This was very entertaining. I'm looking forward to the next one! You guys rock.

      VastaKustuta
    96. I'd be interested in seeing artist and authors spotlighted in your podcast. I tried doing something similar, but got too few responses to make it worthwhile.

      VastaKustuta
    97. You all clearly had a lapse of thought in the background pony discussion, Octavia clearly most merits development.

    98. I can agree with you guys overall on rap. I'm not a rap person myself. There is a song once in a while I like alright, but overall, its really not my thing. Except Pony Swag because it's about ponies. Though I am sometimes impressed by how well some rappers can come up with good lyrics on the spot.

As for autotune. I'll admit, I sometimes use autotune in my songs. But I really like it when it's used well sometimes.

Octavia in a band? It's called an "Ensemble". lol But you're forgiven. ;)

The Nightly Roundup Phoe did was number 14 I believe. And I agree, it was very well done. But as a writer, she's expected to be pretty good at it. :P Plus, like you guys stated, Seth is so busy he doesn't have a lot of time to add many personal touches. And that's fine, we still get our news. As long as we get the news. :)

For Slice of Life vs. Adventure arc lead-in, I think I agree with Cereal and Phoe. Mostly because I know exactly where they're coming from with this. The issues it could cause or some of the intricacies it can entail. I do like a good adventure arc, don't get me wrong there. But with writing there's certain guidelines you should follow. Especially when writing for a TV show. To make sure it doesn't get real off-topic of the main theme of the show. At least overall. Or focus too much on one or limited characters, while sweeping all the others to the side too often. And if the Second Season lead in with some big adventure arc like the first did, it may kinda set the mood for the Second Season. In a way that wouldn't be best. Depends how it's done. It's workable I think. And with off shoots such as a big thing focusing mostly on the CMC. It's true, then you have people wondering "well, how does this fit in with the main story as well?". It's not impossible, but it can be tricky. Also, like was noted, then you have divided attention. Maybe if its done really really well. But side series like that can mess things up a bit too. Anyway, I'm rambling. I mostly agree with Cereal and Phoe on this, but I wouldn't be totally opposed to a big adventure arc. I like Slice of Life a lot. But I also like adventure arcs once in a while too.

Awww, my question wasn't answered. But I guess many weren't. Can only answer so many. Should've posted it a lot sooner in the comments.

    101. Dr. Henry Killinger13. august 2011, kell 21:53

      ---Hehe, this podcast inspired me!

I sat motionless, next to my dull grey computer desk. Three distinct voices hummed in the background, a pleasant humm that tickled the mind, garnering an occasional chuckle from the room's sole occupant that rippled through the room as a stone ripples water. Yet stillness permeated the air, and stifled what little sound there was.

It seemed the cloak of silence would be omnipresent, as it ever was in the still, grey room. Yet as my thoughts pondered the vast emptiness, a voice rang out, clearer to me then any bell made by man. My name had been spoken, my question was to be answered!

Fingers flashed, and the laser mouse glowed as I roused it from it's slumber. The computer monitor flashed on, bathing my grinning face in a warm, blue light. They picked my question! I was good enough to be picked!

My fiery pride began to overtake me, and I relinquished myself to it's warm embrace. What a great journalist I am, my professors would be proud! Not only did they pick my question, but it has turned from a single answer question into a multi-pronged question! I reveled in the moment, and no longer was the room a place of stillness, but a place warmed both by the burning heat of passionate pride and the warm blue light of the monitor, which lit even the darkest corners.

I rose to my feet, grin extended now into a full fledged smile. Nothing could take this victory from me! I had reached the highest plateau that a journalist could reach! I had finally found it! I had obtained perfec...

And then another voice rang through the mass of color and motion. A voice that shattered the gleaming armor I had constructed, and in an instant, put out the glowing flame that lit up the room.

"and now that we have put everyone to sleep" said the voice.

I stand motionless, as the cold greyness of doubt once again take its natural roots. Who was I to think I was good enough for this. I knew it was too good to be true. I overlooked something, as I always do. So human of me...

I stand motionless, lit only by the blue light of the computer monitor, a blue that has cooled, a blue that freezes everything it touches. I slowly slump down into my chair, and the room becomes as a picture. No motion, no warmth, just the buzz of three voices talking.

But something was off in the picture. Something still yet moved, and the stillness could not be complete. Though the monitor remained cold, the blue light reflected in my eyes, and through that reflection came a blue flame twice as bright and hot as any yet seen.

Of course it wasn't a perfect question. I'm still a novice, but my resolve is set! Someday I will find the perfect question, but in order to do so, I must keep trying! The blue light radiates through me, pushing me up, moving my hands across the keyboard, breaking the stillness. Though it may not have been all I had expected, I had found something I didn't expect, something that was hidden beneath the false fires of pride.

      I found inspiration.

--- Ya, so that happened after I heard the podcast. Thank you for answering my question! I never would have wrote something like this if I hadn't have been broken out of my shell!

Phew, writing is tiring, I'm gonna get some people in TF2 now. Oh, and btw you three, I teach scout in game, so feel free to convo me if you want a lesson. Cheers!

    102. I find it odd that their ways with music are similar to mine...

      VastaKustuta
    103. That intro music. yes.
Also having larger stories in the series would be pretty awesome, if they're able to pull it off. The writers really seem to know what they're doing, so, I can't see them really messing it up

      VastaKustuta
    104. The thing with having over-arching storylines is that they are found in animated shows intended for much older viewers such as teenagers and young adults. If FiM had such a spinoff, then we would be the target demographic.

The problem with this is that, because of the different target, executive meddling is a risk, and we may end up with a spinoff that tries to imitate "darker and edgier" shows from that demographic, and ultimately kill the show.

Moreover, a spinoff running parallel to the original show would be too much for the current team to handle, so the spinoff would be shipped to a team who may or not be on the same page as the fans and team behind the original show. As a result, the spinoff could lose a lot of it's original charm and style, even the mane six could end up becoming OOC due to different writers being hired to cater for the spinoff.

Then there is the issue with trying to maintain canon. One show could outright state something to be true, while the other can completely invalidate it or confuse it. Not knowing which is canon or not would lead to in-fighting among fans and even the two teams as sides are picked over which one has more say than the other. Even if the spinoff is confirmed to be completely non-canon, it won't stop a gap from appearing between fans who watch the spinoff and those who don't. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we take ideas from everything we see, and we ponder over it a lot. This is how a lot of fanon is created, but since it came from a more official source, if non-canon, than mere discussion between fans, things can get confusing.

In short, a spinoff would be a terrible idea, only a continuation of the current gen with a later reboot (>implying the current gen will end, >implying the current gen will not set the bar so high that a continuation years later will be destined to fail) would stand a chance. A spinoff being made while the current show is still in full swing will muddy the waters and meet a horrible demise, possibly taking everything with it.

The only way the FiM universe could have a big adventure plot like the fics "Going Out Your Door" or "Paradise" while the current show is still going is for a FiM movie to be made. A movie, being different from a TV Show in terms of length and how people compare them to TV Shows, can give a huge story arc because a feature length film allows it, and even if it doesn't quite follow established canon in the TV Show, it isn't so much as an issue because the general consensus is that a movie based on something is NEVER to be closely compared to the original work it is based on. In other words, it is easier to accept that a movie is non-canon than it is to accept another TV Show running parallel to TV Show in the same universe as non-canon. A TV/Movie comparison becomes an Apples/Oranges comparison.

      VastaKustuta
    105. Finished up the podcast. Thank you all three of you guys! For the show's direction, just keep it the way it is - why bother messing with the formula?

This is going to fun reading peoples' comments regarding this...:P

      VastaKustuta
    112. bon-bon is french for candy -_-

      VastaKustuta
    113. In regards to the Slice of Life versus Long Arc, I'd say a mixture of both would be necessary. Personally, it'd be weird for there not to be a end to a story-line. Because, imagine if "The Best Night Ever" was just a random day, and not have been built up to (The Ticketmaster, Suited for Success). Like how Samurai Jack ended, NOT with an Epic end battle with Aku, but with Jack rescuing a baby.

tl;dr Mix of Both (Gee, I like to ramble).
Also, (because of Cereal's comment, I must ask) would Phoe be The Carcross Desert (Wikipedia says it's one of the smallest deserts in the world) and Seth be the Sonoran Desert (according to a website, it's one of North America's most interesting deserts, meaning you'd get sidetracked often).

      VastaKustuta

    115. THE MOST SERIOUS PODCAST ON THE FCKN PLANET! Why did I swear?

      VastaKustuta
    116. The problem with a podcast like this is that I feel like I need to comment. BUT ITS A RECORDING. I keep wanting to join the conversation, but I can't, because you can't hear me. And that makes me sad.
And then I realize that this makes me sad because I have no life.
And then I go cry in a corner. Because I have no life.

      VastaKustuta
    117. Oh god, this ponycast has more tangents then Twilight's trigonometry book.

You should try and limit it to 5-7 minutes per question so you can get more then 5 or 6 done in 90 minutes.

      VastaKustuta
    118. I expect myself to make transcripts for 93 minutes of this?!

Sweet Celestia, where did my sanity go?

      VastaKustuta
    119. you guys are looking at it wrong. what you want is a movie. something that would need a over arcing story, be cheaper to make then a new series.

      VastaKustuta
    120. Re: The poll question.

There isn't all that much that I would change about the format used for the show. The biggest change I would make would be to add continuity, but keep the same balance between slice-of-life kind of stories and action oriented ones. I really like the fact that, even for being a world filled with dangerous creatures and powerful magicians, that the common, everyday things, such as getting the harvest in or meeting up with old friends from your past can still be events that drive the story forward. I'm afraid that if the emphasis shifted more towards action and adventure, it would either force some of the mane six to become background ponies or be reduced to just one single part of their personality. If I want an adventure-fest, I'll check out one of the dozens of options being churned out in the manga and anime factories in Japan.

No, it's the continuity that I want to see addressed, not the content. I'd like for the ponies to remember a bit more of what happened in the past. And really, for a series that Hasbro wants the episodes viewable in any old order, they did a fine job of tossing in call backs to previously aired episodes. I'd just like to see a little more of that kind of stuff, and a little less the status quo being kept from episode to episode. As for arcs, I either make them loose, like the Grand Galloping Gala episodes, or if they come up with an idea for an hour long story, make it a movie so we can fill up Hasbro's coffers with more DVD sales.

tl;dr: Keep the current ratio of everyday:action, while increasing the continuity of the story from episode to episode.

      VastaKustuta
    121. By Celestia's beard, this podcast is absolutely fantastic, and you three are awesome people (or ponies?). I feel honored you all answered my question about favorite music artists/genres.

As for the overarching plot concept, it could potentially be really cool, certainly, but overall I don't think it would be a good idea. Even as a separate series, it would end up stripping out a lot of what we like about MLP in the first place. Although, admittedly, I do fantasize about the Past Sins story being adapted to the show's format...

Yeah, the only viable way I can think of would just be to make a season just like Season 1 with an overarching plot (i.e. the Grand Galloping Gala), only include more mentions and references to it instead of it feeling like something the characters keep forgetting about (i.e. only three episodes that so much as mention the Gala before it happens).

      VastaKustuta
    122. Ah actually think Seth sounds more like Elijah Wood than Michael Cera.

      But that's just me.

      VastaKustuta
    123. Can someone type this down? Soundcloud doesn't work well on my iPad and my computer's not working at the moment.

      VastaKustuta
    124. The existence of all these extra monsters and stuff and the adventure aspects of the show are what draw in new adult and male viewers. Sure, the characters are written fantastically, but you'll get more people interested by listing off the mythical beasts they fight than by talking about how the best episode is the one where a pony goes insane because she thinks her friends hate her parties.

At first, people keep watching for the action, but the character development included in those episodes is what makes them into longer-term fans. The careful balance of action and slice-of-life elements is one of the core things that makes this show so great. The existence of the cockatrice was the major saving grace of Stare Master and most of my favourite episodes have some sort of action as their basis.

There are action-heavy episodes that are flops and there are slice-of-life-heavy episodes that are flops, but that all boils down to opinion, so I'm not even going to list my personal examples of those.

That said, I think a few episodes in an arc would work very well, but I don't think a full-season arc would go as smoothly for this show. Possibly a side-show, as Seth kept mentioning, but I don't think we're nearly at the point quite yet where a whole side show would be feasible.

That said, I don't think continuity would be any sort of issue if they did a spinoff thing. As long as the writers can ignore everything going on in the side-show, they can keep the characters as they are and just say that show happens after. That said, though, I think I'd prefer a short arc over a very long one, and I think that as long as it's got a good basis, good writing/comedy, some level of excitement, and some good character development, it could easily work with slice-of-life, action-adventure, or any combination of the two.

      VastaKustuta
    125. I would like some element of recursion for something that is either mentioned or dealt with to keep episodes together, (and a return of the EoH, but something tells me that's a pipe dream, or for a TV movie, which I would not hate.)

I figured Applejack might play stock market in her off hours.

      VastaKustuta
    126. phoe----super nintendo is the best! WOO

      VastaKustuta
    127. Grahhh! applejack's eye color goes with the rest of her! She's an ANALOGOUS color scheme yellow, yellow orange, and yellow-green. 2-5 colors on a color wheel that are adjacent to eachother make up an analogous color scheme. your art speak makes me HNNNNG

      VastaKustuta
    128. I agree with Seth regarding the Adventure plot.

I suppose I must be one of the few people who wish MLP had stayed on the adventure plot that it started out with. I don't think the argument that the pilot episodes weren't as good is an excuse; they were the pilot episodes, I have never seen a pilot for any series that has been able to hold a candle to he show proper.

I am curious though what Phoe means when she says "It'll become just like all those other adventure shows," because the only one I can think of is Avatar: The Last Airbender. Honestly I think western animation could benefit from breaking ground in that area, might help it squeeze it's way out of the animation ghetto.

Although I gotta admit, watching the Pony Lagann video solidifies my desire to see Adventure MLP with a cohesive continuity whenever I see it. A movie at least would be nice.

      VastaKustuta
    129. Awesome, you guys did my question! And my question was the first question you answered about ponies, too. Also, props to Cereal for not screwing up my name, and a brohoof to him as well for listening to Dream Theater!

Also, I enjoyed this, but I do kinda wish there were less questions that didn't focus on ponies.

      VastaKustuta
    130. Oh, and I think a movie is the best answer to the Adventure-vs-Slice of Life debate, and that otherwise the show should stay pretty much the same.

      VastaKustuta
    131. CEREAL LIKES PERIPHERY, MY LIFE IS COMPLETE.

      VastaKustuta
    132. This is why I believe debating doesn't work. I identify with Seth in that I can't really back up all my opinions with solid facts, it's just a preference thing. Meanwhile Phoe was ripping him apart in an attempt to persuade him that she was right.

      VastaKustuta
    133. Guys, the podcast is OK, but I think it would be better if it was shorter. A half hour podcast would be great!

Whether that means you answer fewer questions but still answer them at length, or try to stay on topic and answer faster is up to you--I'd be happy with either--but 90 minutes was hard to get through.

      VastaKustuta
    134. Why you no like Doctor Whoof? ;_;

      VastaKustuta
    135. "What are you thoughts on Lauren Faust stepping down and how it will effect the show?"

Well excuse me for missing the 'r' button :P

      VastaKustuta
    138. Persona 3? aw yeah.

Also, while Applejack is my favorite pony, I do want to see her more fleshed out in season 2.

      VastaKustuta
    141. This was wonderful.
For the arc vs slice of life question: I like the idea Phoe had similar to the Gala; An arc that is pushed of to the side, but still there.
As for what I would like in the future: If it was in my power, I would love to get you guys an interview with one of the powers behind the show. To let you guys have that experience and hear the hilarious results would be glorious. But on the "actually could happen" side of things, I like how it is. Lots of ridiculous arguments over ponies. Oh, but there should be singing.

      VastaKustuta
    142. Holyshit, you are right! Seth does sound like Michael Cera!

Great, we have a pony blog managed by Scott Pilgrim. Next thing you're gonna tell me is that there's a portal inside my Nintendo DS that will open when I play up to 300 hours on Pokemon Silver.

      @Phoe

Thanks Phoe, that's exactly the sort of stuff I was hoping to find out. Being forced to practice is one of the big attractions for me, the idea that at the end of the course, you'll have had to produce *something*.

Even if it's terrible, the fact that you're being forced to persevere to the bitter end seems like a really positive thing.

Would love to hear you expand on the development of your writing in one of the EQD features, if that was something you'd be okay talking about :)

P.S. here's a song you might like, based on the music discussion. Also, someone's made a video for it with Jem clips. People were mashing up songs with TV shows before ponies, wtf?

    146. 1. Y u bloggers no liek Dr. Whooves?
      2. I didn't notice a difference in the quality of the adventure v. slice of life storylines. Were you guys trying to debate with opinions? It doesn't work that way you know; you won't get anywhere new.

      VastaKustuta
    147. The pie scene was really beautiful and heartwarming. Phoe is really verbose.

      VastaKustuta
    148. What do you guys use to make these podcasts? Maybe you guys should make a skype group and you guys could accept skype calls from bronies so that you could accept questions in real time!! That, or you could just do live fan-fiction readings. Anything works but if you did make the skype thing I would definitely call lots of times. I have so many questions. Hypothetically, if you guys needed a new guy to help run the site, what qualities would you look for.

      VastaKustuta
    149. OH GOD PHOE WROTE CHASING RAINBOWS?
      BEST BLOGPONY.

    150. I remember reading that Vinyl Scratch story that Phoe was talking about and it was pretty awesome. I think it was posted on ED, but I can't remember the name of it.

      VastaKustuta
    151. You guys need to listen to some real hip-hop, geez. Find some vinyl rips on youtube, 'livinlarge03' is good channel for stuff like that.

      VastaKustuta
    154. Loved the podcast, though I'd love shorter answers to the questions to avoid them going off-topic...But then again, you guys were on a roll here and gave some really interesting points.

Anywho, I can;t wait to listen to the next one. xD

aside, Coca Cola is used to clean oil tanks because pure Phosphoric acid is too expensive.
      I do drink Dr. Pepper.

As for the Fav Pony as a pony.. that would be working with the Apple Family. Getting my hooves dirty.

AppleJack's coloration is based off of Trigger, Roy Rodger's Horse.

      VastaKustuta
    158. There needs to be a movie. You can make season 2 all slice of life, that'd be fine, but there needs to be a feature-length adventure movie.

      VastaKustuta
    159. i dont care what anyone else says. this is fun to listen to. and i wants moar!

Yes it's a WoW podcast but these guys made the show so good. Just give it a listen.

      VastaKustuta
    161. Awesome podcast guys

If you were to have any sort of guest on the pod cast I think I would like to hear from Purple Tinker

      VastaKustuta
    162. So wait....
      Is Seth actually Michael Cera?

      VastaKustuta
    163. Micheal Cera has done voice work. His very first role was doing the little brother in Braceface and he voiced Scott Pilgrim in a cartoon for the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BitByGeWGxU. Amazing what you find when you hit random on Tv Tropes some days.

A great podcast, Pretty much what I wanted to hear. Having guests on would be interesting but I'm not sure who you could get?

      VastaKustuta
    164. I am so aroused and so intimidated by how well read and spoken Phoe is. She is so much smarter than me.

Great podcast guys. Can't wait for the next one. :3

      VastaKustuta
    165. Yeah, sorry blog ponies, but I just don't have the commitment to spend 6-10 hours doing a write up of this. *whew!~*

I guess my contribution to this site just went out the window.

Anyway, Phoe, I am very interested to hear that you do game design, for I do as well (probably different styles of games though). I'd love to chat sometime about things.

      VastaKustuta

      VastaKustuta
    168. No really, please tell me I'm not the only who noticed that Phoe sounds like Ellen DeGeneres

      VastaKustuta
    169. I agree with Phoe 100% on the whole adventure thing.

      VastaKustuta
    170. >All from Cereal
      >Seth: "Goddamit Cereal get your mind out of the gutter!"

      VastaKustuta
    171. I'm really enjoying these. No idea if Cereal's done this kind of stuff before, but the editing and sound quality is very nice.

    172. Question for the next Q&Neigh:

If the MLP:FiM staff decideded to turn any one non-crossover fanfic (because getting the rights to use the other series would be too expensive) into a 90 minute made-for-tv-movie (making everything in the fanfic canon), and they let you pick the story, which would you pick? It can be as grimdark or nonsensical as you want, as long as they don't have to purchase the rights to anything in order to make the movie.

      VastaKustuta
    173. Oh right, suggestion: Low volume BGM during discussion. Maybe switch up tunes depending on the topic. Preferably all pony related, if you have to pull it from BGM only episodes or ask around for permission to use fan creations or something.

http://www.2pstart.com/2010/06/16/2p-start-live-e3-2010/ does something like this for example.

      VastaKustuta
    174. Derp. Wrong link. :< SEE THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK MEMORIES AGAINST REALITY BEFORE POSTING, FELLOW PONIES

    175. Swooning over getting my question answered!

Regarding Long-Arc vs. Slice of Life- I'm all for the show's status quo. The subtle connections between episodes were a joy to tease out: Pinkie's possessiveness from Griffon the Brushoff reaching its epic conclusion in Party of One, Fluttershy's increasing confidence, and Twilight going bonkers whenever royalty is involved. The GGG story arc was prominent enough to ramp up the tension for the finale, but successfully avoided obscuring individual episodes.
But hay, I've been wrong before, and Equestria's fate is in good hooves.

    176. "Bon-bon?"

      "Good-good."

      "Good-good?"

      "Oui oui, C.V.!" *mad giggle*

      VastaKustuta
    177. Holden Caulfield =/= Rainbow Dash

I HATE Holden Caulfield so much I can't even express it in words

      VastaKustuta
    178. Derpy as a villain in season 2 with double exploding muffins, creating chaos in all equestria.

      VastaKustuta
    179. Regarding the slice of life vs adventure themes, I think Phoe hit the nail on the head. I think somebody said something about Avatar, and what I remember is that Avatar had a final goal, but was mostly episodic because that goal was so loosely connected to the episode by episode plot. I think that if season 2 did something like what season one did with the grand galloping gala, which is tie some unrelated slice of life episodes together with an over-arching theme, it would work very well and add a great deal of depth without sacrificing the My Little Pony style that we all love so much.

      VastaKustuta
    180. So now I have to write a fanfiction about this Q&Neigh too, I guess...

      VastaKustuta
    181. @4:30 - CARDGAMES ON PEGASAI!

@8 - Grape? Eh. Gingerale? Vomit. Orange? OMG YES. Cream Soda? Brown good, clear acceptable and mixes well with orange soda.

@10 - You guys made a hard choice awfully quickly! I guess all her magic related books would seal the deal. Applejack, Fluttershy, and Luna still tempt though.

Also, how the HECK did Seth not say Trixie?

@14:45 - Monochromatic, I believe. Not sure you're using it right though.

@15:20 - Fluttershy's eyes. Hmm. Her mild palette probably contributes to this working. Also, the blue, pink, and light yellow sort of form the 3 primary colors, so...

@16:50- Hizarsh. Country isn't my favorite, but there is a lot of good stuff in there.

@20- Woah, you do not want to get into vocals VS instruments. Both are too vital on the whole.

@23:10- Ohhh, that does sound cozy.

@25:30- I have heard much worse Cereal.

@28:50- Wow, I never realized how terrible it is to be straightforward, sweet'n'sassy, and to be the one amused by others. APPLEBASHERS ALL.

      @32:20- She... really would o.0

@40- Faust go byebye? o.0 news to me. Pretty sad.

@45- Phoe and I have something in common.

      @48:30- WISE DECISION.

@65:40- Oh man, when you guys brought up classical literature it just hit me. Ferinheight 451. Twilight would be great in it.

@72- I'ma have to stop you here. You can't criticise D.T. and S.S. for being what may very well be, on a level, Applebloom's version of Dash's bullies you were just praising as engaging elements.

@74:10- Seth. You'd totally be Snips older brother or something. Not making a personality connection, just with your voice it fits for me. He could easily be much smarter than Snips.

@76- You guys read my mind.

@85:25- I could see it too Seth, but I think occasional adventures work best. Not just one or the other.

If you were to set up a side adventure like Seth said I think I'd want entirely different ponies. Maybe make Twilight, Rarity, et cetera bit characters in their adventurs now and then.

-What I would like to see from the Q&Neigh-

A shorter length! Whew! I guess if I was the passive type it wouldn't be an issue. But I like to add my thoughts to things. Make it 30 or so minutes?

Guest spots from popular artists/PMV makers/writers would be great to see.

      -Questions-

What exactly do the three of you expect from Applejack character wise? Because I'm not quite getting it.

What's the worst color scheme you've ever seen on a pony?

What do you think of the level of technology in Equestria? I've been playing it as "If you haven't seen it it doesn't exist." myself.

      VastaKustuta
    182. If somepony was to write a fanfic about Seth as a pie, what would you like it to be like?

      VastaKustuta
    183. Me and Cereal have the same musical tastes.

      My life is complete.

      VastaKustuta
    184. "Shawshank Redemption with ponies."

Meh... I'd personally prefer to see The Shining ponified... mainly to see which pony gets to be Jack. Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy, maybe... either one would be AWESOME to see in the Overlook...

      VastaKustuta
    185. You should totally do a collective reading of a fanfic. I am so in favor of this you have no idea. Probably need more voices, though--five should be enough, depending on the fic.

      VastaKustuta
    186. Man I love these things, so much fun haha, second best Pony Podcast! Bronyville #1 by the way

Also there was no swearing in the bloopers, just a sound of a crow lol.

    189. Double question:

Ponies have crossed over from their universe to ours. How do you think the world would handle it?

If the above situation was an episode, how would they handle it?
