Lauren Faust recently posted a whole bunch of really neat FiM production sketches over on her Deviant Art page.
Carrot farmer Applejack is kind of cute actually!
All images are after the break.

ReplyDeleteOops.
ReplyDeleteI'm late >.>
Just sent this to seth now after getting power back XD
Twilight. XD
ReplyDeletethanks for posting this. It's AWESOME. I love apple bloom.
ReplyDeleteLove the last one.
ReplyDeleteAwesome =O
ReplyDeleteAwesome stuff. But I noticed the fourth pic has who I assume is Dinky. Next to two unicorn adults.
ReplyDeleteDerpy must have kidnapped/adopted Dinky!
That last one contains dangerous amounts of HHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Twilight the cutest thing ever?! :3
#3 Flutterjack?
ReplyDeleteLoved all of them *proceeds to favorite every one*
ReplyDeleteoh god i'm sorry for the spam faust D:
I just saw all of these, really awesome to see the original concepts behind the characters.
ReplyDeleteawesome.
ReplyDeleteLove the last one... twilight studied too hard. lol.
Aweshome.
ReplyDelete#10, something made Fluttershy sad
ReplyDeleteTHAT MEANS SOMETHING IS GOING TO DIE
Applejack is so badass at her core.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just love the FLuttershys and Twilights here ^^
I like how the first one with twilight has what looks like trixie's cutie mark...
ReplyDeleteAhhhh! Fluttershy is giving THE STARE in the next to last one.
ReplyDeleteWait... is that Fluttershy without wings, and Rarity without a horn? I guess maybe the idea to make them what they are now came later in production... and these are some damn early sketches? Also, no Rainbowdash? Oh well, the Twilight at the end is awesome. And could someone please explain #4 to me? Who is that? I was thinking Twilight, but the body shape dosen't look like Filly Twilight... who is it and why do I not care for it?
ReplyDeleteFluttershy totally has rarity eyes in number 8.
ReplyDelete(Saw this happening this morning, just sat there refreshing her gallery page to insta fave.)
@ninto55
ReplyDeleteI think it looks a bit like snips.
@ninto55
ReplyDeleteQuote from Faust:
"These were just random Fillydelphia residents. I wanted Ponyville to be Fillydelphia originally. Obviously that didn't pan out, but I was glad we got to use the name somewhere else."
Wow! This is amazing!
ReplyDelete@ninto55
ReplyDeleteSo many people thought #8 was rarity, actually fluttershy.
Also Fluttershy stole pinkie's wings later in production.
Last one was awesome.
ReplyDeleteI wanna see that dragon in Season Two!
ReplyDelete@t-arndt
ReplyDeleteOh, after checking the DA page, it's the cutie mark from the 80's pony "moondancer".
The last Twilight one looks like something straight out of a Drawfriend post.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that Applebloom's original name was Appleseed.
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad Lauren is still thinking about us
ReplyDeleteWhat, no link to said DA account?
ReplyDeleteI like the earth pony Fluttershy. Her talent actually seems more like an earth pony thing than a pegasus one. Her origin story wouldn't be as interesting if she'd been on the ground all along, though.
ReplyDeleteShe did such an amazing thing with MLP. Even if they'd gone to an established cartoonist and said "Make an updated, less insipid reboot of My Little Pony", I don't think it would have been as good as it turned out.
ReplyDeleteThe only upside of her not being involved anymore is that hopefully she'll get to make something else, and maybe there'll be another great show on tv.
Anyone notice that Twilight's cutie mark in #11 is different?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a star and a moon.
someone colour these, stat!
ReplyDelete8th from the top - SCHREECH!!!
ReplyDeleteBig F'n Dragon right there.
ReplyDelete@HaysforPonies
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I thought those might be Rarity's parents. Something about the mom's hair...
@moocow1452
ReplyDeleteDragonESS.
Very sparkly!
i feel like twilight in the last pic right now.
ReplyDeleteSo much Fluttershy. So much cuteness.
ReplyDeleteI demand LUNA!
production sketches and storeboard art is...IMO the best thing ever..its the "core" of what we all love and a shame that most of it goes unseen or burried in a back room
ReplyDelete@DT736
ReplyDelete...
Is her special talent Islam?
AJ and the frog and opening pic are best pics.
ReplyDeleteThough they're all so good ^_^
Yeah for those newer bronies who didn't know: Fluttershy was originally going to be an earth pony and Pinkie Pie was going to be a pegasus.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what that 4th sketch is all about.
@Marfikent This means that there's a good chance we'll get to see Fillydelphia in season 2! -yay-
ReplyDeleteI love how she draws males! I don't think I've ever seen her draw one before.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteno scootaloo? why no scootaloo. everyone knows she is best pony
ReplyDeleteMoar, I say!
ReplyDelete@t-arndt
ReplyDeletePretty sure that twilights mom, as I believe moondancer was who she was originally based on, before Lauren changed her to twilight, but used her original design as twi's mom in the cutie mark chronicles.
...god, 5 months ago I would have laughed at anyone this knowledgeable in My Little Pony history...
Also, 4th one down, is that snips or dinky? 6th one down, please let these be season two concept drawings, because thats a cooool looking dragon. do want.
WHOOOHOOO!! My day is now officially made! REALLYREALLYREALLY hope she posts more of this. Great stuff - always like to see any kind of production art. :D
ReplyDeletethese are awesome :O
ReplyDelete3rd from the top - parent ponies with their kid? The adult female there has hair that looks a lot like Pinkie's.
ReplyDelete4th from the bottom - I wonder if there's a reason she looks so much like Twilight. That cutie mark certainly isn't Twilight's.
Everyone should go read her descriptions, some awesome little nuggets of info with them.
ReplyDeleteIt was also awesome to be sitting here, checking my deviantart and then get a bunch of pitch bible sketches.
Faust's sketches are the best without a doubt.
ReplyDeleteI really like these. It is almost like glancing back in time, seeing the stuff from which the show was made.
ReplyDelete@Jecht
"A sketch of Twilight used for the original 2008 MLP:FiM pitch bible.
Note original cutie mark--- a variation of the 80's Moondancer, which I always liked as a kid."
Pretty cool stuff you got there.
ReplyDeleteIm going to just say that, until proven wrong, the Dragon is Spikes mom. At lest in my head she will be lol
ReplyDeletelove that dragon shame it wasnt used
ReplyDeleteHeh, that last one made me crack up. Oh Twilight...
ReplyDeleteI thought the first one was WWI Doughboy Applejack digging trenches at first glance.
ReplyDeleteTotally dig AJ's Sliding Stop - should have known she was a reining horse... er ... pony!
ReplyDeleteThey're all pretty cute. Poor Twilight at the bottom. Ever the diligent student. :P
ReplyDeleteNeeds more Rainbow Dash.
ReplyDeleteWent through all the comments on dA this morning, picking up all sorts of trivia from Lauren Faust, and then got caught up in other work before I had a moment to post it all on PonyChan. So I'll post 'em here!

Angel Bunny was originally a mouse named Mortimer.
http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com/art/Appleseed-255843764
Apple Bloom was originally named Appleseed. However, her name was changed due to copyright issues. She was also the only filly seeking out her cutie mark, but the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, were developed later.
http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com/art/Shy-255839611
Fluttershy was originally an earth pony, and Pinkie Pie was the second pegasus.
http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com/art/Applejack-in-the-Garden-255838281
For toy development purposes, there are many alternative hair and outfit designs. For example, Applejack occassionally appears with her hair braided.
http://fyre-flye.deviantart.com/art/Star-Gazing-Twilight-255836581
Twilight Sparkle originally had a crescent moon and a star for a cutie mark, like Moondancer's from the original G1.
http://comments.deviantart.com/1/255836581/2171727170
Twilight Sparkle's original name was Twilight Twinkle, and had a turquoise stripe in her hair. However, her name was changed to Sparkle and the turquoise turned pink for copyright reasons.
http://comments.deviantart.com/5/43717190/2171709948
Trixie was originally going to be a colt in the episode's premise, but writer Chris Savino devised Trixie's current appearance and mannerisms.
oh, cute tired Twi...
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't know any better I would assume that Applejack was Faust's favorite Pony and not Rainbow Dash/ FireFly.
ReplyDelete@LegatoSkyheart
ReplyDeleteOh I'm sure she loves them alla lot,but remember that G1 was her favorite as a child.
That ain't no Dinky.
ReplyDeleteThere is now no hope for me, twilight will always be the best pony in equestria. Every sketch of her just made me DAAAAWWWW out loud...
ReplyDelete@LegatoSkyheart
ReplyDeleteDue to Hasbro losing the copyright to the original ponies, Applejack was the only one Faust was able to use in the cartoon. That kind of gives AJ a legacy the other ponies don't have; she's the last pony standing, she is The Highlander of MLP.
Also, I'm going to pretend that Carrot Farmer Applejack is now Carrot Top.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Also.. that is a pretty dragon. I wish they would have used her as one of the dragons in the series instead of palette-swapping the Red/Green dragons. Now I will just have to imagine she's Spikes mom.
I love AJ's ponytail (she has the best mane! what conditioner does she use?) but her braids are also super cute.
ReplyDeletethis would also explain the MCD's toys having AJ with braided hair.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping they pop up here at some point.
I love them, but why would she leave the two best ponies out?
ReplyDeleteCuando lauren toma un lapiz empieza la magia
ReplyDeleteThese are marvelous. I wonder if there are any more of these in hiding.
ReplyDelete@David
ReplyDeleteNice finds dude! And don't forget this nifty trinket-

"The [Earth Ponies] have numbers. There are more Earth Ponies in Equestria than the other two. Their more resourceful and have better control over the land. At least that's what I always had in my head."
More Earth ponies than Pegasi and unicorn ponies?! This statement officially balances the playing field. No doubt about it.
Ahmahgahd, she is one amazing sketch artist. The way she poses them and captures their expressions and personalities...bah, it makes me wish for just half her drawing skills. They all look so adorable and awesome, I could eat 'em up. Fascinating tidbits, too.
ReplyDeleteEarth ponies are the most plentiful type, eh? Hmm. I suppose that I always had kind of assumed that, but figured the numbers weren't drastically different. The mane cast is evenly split among the three 'subspecies,' and there are plenty of Pegasi and unicorns to be seen otherwise, so yeah...I figured that Earth would be the most populous, but not by an enormous landslide.
The volume of art demonstrates that Lauren knows what should be self-evident to all...
ReplyDeleteApplejack is best pony.
Oh, and a "mouse named Mortimer" reminds me of Disney 'toons (Mickey's rival!) Appleseed was a really cute name, too, but I love Applebloom.
ReplyDeleteApplejack in braids=so much win. <3
Twilight's original Moondancer cutie mark was cool.
While Twilight Twinkle is an adorably alliterative name, I think I prefer Sparkle (which has the added bonus of sounding like a little rip on the Twilight books/movies, lol.) I'm sure she looked pretty with the turquoise hair stripes, and wonder what all these copyright issues were. Now, of course, she resembles Stocking (and still looks terrific.)
And Trixie was gonna be a colt, huh? Wow. 8-]
Applejack is a real pony's pony. She is my (very close) second favorite pony (after Dash.) B-D
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust is too awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Twilight...
ReplyDelete*puts on dark shades*
...hit the books.
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!
^ Lol! xD
ReplyDeleteWow, the show really captured her vision perfectly. :3 With inspiration like these preliminary sketches, no wonder it's so amazing.
@David
ReplyDeleteWasn't Rainbow Dash also originally an earth pony? Well her previous incarnations that is. I'm not sure how that went when they were making FiM
Also I find it rather funny now that twi was going to look like moondancer when they happened to mention moondancer in the first episode LOL.
@Mattwo
ReplyDeleteLauren initially pitched her own rendition of the G1 pegasus Firefly, which then changed to Rainbow Dash and took on characteristics of the G3 earth pony of the same name. Even her cutie mark is a combination of the two (Firefly had two blue lightning bolts, G3 Rainbow Dash had a rainbow connecting two clouds).
