Steves_Minty has sent us a lot of pictures of the Canterlot sets that appeared at his local Target. Included are some activity sets for smaller children, and some Celestia and Luna toys. She wrote up an excellent email for us, so I won't muddy their words. You can find a million pictures, as well as the write-up, after the break.
My local Target finally got some Canterlot items! Most everything has been posted before, but I never saw these. I also have some comparison pics of the two molded Celestias.
Apparently Hasbro misheard our pleas for Celestia to not be pink. They just recolored her pink stripe. Also included is how creepy Luna is. The outline of her eyes is defined as it would be on any Pony, so you can see it around her eye paint. Creepy. The influence of Molestia is strong with this one. I had her chilling with me while I watch old Linkara vids. Hopefully reviews of crappy comics won't make her MORE evil.
Submitted for your approval will be pics of three activity sets. We have a watercolor MAGIC REVEAL PAINT SET OMG ELEVENTYONE! The paint-in parts have a raised pattern. I have a similar G3 set with markers.
Then we have an Aqua Doodle bootleg called WATER WOW! set with G3 counterparts. I really like these little things. Basically a thin sheet of material is over colored material, and wetting it using the foam tipped brush makes the colors reveal. This seems like a travel set, with the cards attaching to the ring on the brush. On the reverse are questions you can answer by coloring it in.
Finally, a really goofy thing called a PAPER PLAY SCENE. The pieces involved don't SEEM like real magnets, and the package says its LIKE magnets. Fuckin non-magnets, how do they work? You color in the pieces and make a scene. But it only comes with that one background, I think its also supposed to be a travel toy, because all the pieces fit in that one box that the company didn't trust to keep closed on its own and sells them with that silly shrinkwrapped strip around it. My favorite bit is how they have to LABEL TWILIGHT'S BACKPACK because no one can tell what it is!

hey that's pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't I EVER be first?!
ReplyDeletebut what's with celestia being pink lately?
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not see the heart balloon. Where is it?
ReplyDeleteWell, I know what I want for my birthday, and First.
ReplyDeleteCELESTIA WHY U NO WHITE?
ReplyDelete@colt classic
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, EVERY Celestia toy I've seen has been pink. Only thing I can assume is that they want to differentiate it from Rarity or something, I dunno.
She's white in the box... but she is pink in the toy. Hasbro you are going to pay for this blasphemy!
ReplyDeleteCaptions made me lol.
ReplyDeleteWater no mess coloring, sucking the creativity out of children one step at a time!
ReplyDeleteThat's kinda cool, but I still ain't buying pony merch.
ReplyDeleteoh god i cant tell which celestia i would hate to have more.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Hasbro makes pink Celestias to bother us. Maybe they are laughing right now.
ReplyDeleteIn some twisted way they are like Trollestia.
Some of the coloring pages are pretty cool even if they use the same damn vectors that we've been spammed with nonstop from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Celestia toy is rather nice even if it's not show-accurate. The eyes are actually kind-looking instead of that creepy look most of the toys have, which makes a HUGE difference.
I'm almost willing to bet that in Season 2, as a Lampshade Hanging sort of joke, we're going to see some accident involving Celestia that turns her Pink temporarily. Bonus points if it involves Pinkie Pie AND Derpy causing it.
ReplyDeleteto be honest i like i really like it
ReplyDeletei love the coloring pages i always loved coloring pages thingies
and well at least celestia is white in that insta-comics things
At least Celestria's wings are the same colour as her body, making it easier to paint white if someone wanted to do that.
ReplyDelete*Robots impression* I'm a woman!
ReplyDelete<3 No hard feelings, though. When I made the SN years ago I forgot people usually shorten it to the first part, so I get called Steves and people get confused over my gender. XD Its supposed to be possessive. My boyfriend Steve likes Minty the G3. Steve's Minty. I get called Minty at the meets.
I kinda wonder if Celestia was intended to be a shine bright, but they never finished the prototypes and released them as is? I have a toy from the 90s that seems to be made to perform a certain action but never did. Like they tried to make it work, but it didn't, and since the molds were altered already, they just left it.
~Steves_Minty
Well I caved and bought Rarity's Royal Gem Carriage. At the Walmart I work at... time to go to target tomorrow :3
ReplyDeleteHuh, the left Celestia actually looks like she's almost purple. Or even light lavender, her "true" color. Though I do prefer white Celestia myself as well. For anyone who doesn't know, a lot of the reason for Celestia toys being pink is sales. It's proven among the young audience, pink ponies sell better. Blame Hasbro. lol
ReplyDeleteI know Luna's hair is a bit colorful for her, but I don't mind it. I honestly think it's kinda pretty. lol Could always rehair her if you really wanted I guess.
I dunno. Knowing me and my sometimes five year old brain, I would actually have fun painting all those. :P
Kinda boring, eh Hasbro? Ah, whatever.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Pink Celestia:
ReplyDeleteHasbro explained a little while ago at the Rhode Island convention that she's pink because pink sells. The major US retailers apparently have full control over what Hasbro products they stock and the quantities of how much they want to stock - and the retailers buy more pink pony toys than anything else, simply because that's what the majority of parents buy (pink + girls = cash/sales).
Celestia IS pink in the show, AFAIK - but a very, very light shade of pink. The toys merely throw on -too much- pink. I don't like pink Celestia either, but if it makes Hasbro money, more power to them.
My Target has a pretty good display, with sets, twin bedding, and even a Twilight Sparkle-themed dress! Sadly it's not an adult size 16.
ReplyDeleteButtershy: Fluttershy's embonpoint sister.
ReplyDeleteAt least its just Celestia that has fallen victim to pinkification (and theoretically Pinkie Pie...)
ReplyDeleteImagine if they had made -all- the ponies pink o_O
@Senn555
ReplyDeleteYes, it took me a long time to realize it, but she is outlined in pink, which gives just a suggestion of color. It's a shame that for the toy, that means "make her look like we stuck Pinkie Pie and Twilight in a blender." I think if they'd backed off a little, they could just add a hint of pink to the toy (mostly white), making her look more like the show, making fans happy, and still being able to tell retailers, "Look, she's still pink!" so they can keep their orders up.
@Senn555
ReplyDeleteI think most people just simply ignore me. But I'm used to that. In any case, Celestia is actually light lavender. That's her "true" color anyway. She's white in the show because of the limited budget and it was cheaper.
With those hard plastic parts those Celestia and Luna figures can probably be repainted to be the proper colors since hasbro can not be bothered with any form of quality control. I wonder if anyone has tested their products for lead contamination lately
ReplyDeleteHasbro's half-assed toys make my laugh and cry at the same time.
ReplyDelete@Senn555
ReplyDeleteRetailers ruin everything. D:<
@colt classic
ReplyDeleteCelestia has been pink since the very begining.
On the MLP Convention at Hasbro HQ there was a little Q&A with the toy-section, and of course someone asked what's up with Celestia being pink.
The answer is rather simple. Research shows little girls prefer pink over white. That's it.
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteJust punched in the colour guide for Celestia in Photoshop and the exact vales are:
R 250
G 244
B 248
Not pure white, but most certainly not the strong pink the toys are.
@Octavia
ReplyDeleteSenn55 is right, she really is a kind of ultra-pale-pink in the show. Load up a still from the HDs and check the color values. It's so close to white it's almost impossible to detect but the color values themselves are 255,250,255 - pink.
@Skeptic Mousey
ReplyDeleteI know she's not of pure white, but she's basically white. I meant her true color, outside the show even, is of a light lavender. She's whiter in the show itself because it was cheaper that way.
@Allicorn
ReplyDeleteOh trust me, I know exactly what color she is in the show. lol No worries. I think you misunderstood me though.
I meant her she's basically white in the show, however. As opposed to her real color, even outside the show, which is a light lavender. I don't have the color value on me, but I can get it if you'd like.
CONFOUND THESE MARSHMALLOW PONIES WHY MUST I CARE ABOUT COLORING BOOKS
ReplyDeleteI love that right-hand picture of Twilight in the first image though.
Does anypony else think that pen's colors remind them of a certain Great and Powerful pony?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteOoooh, true ! Why didn't I notice that :P
Hasbro doesn't care about white ponies.
ReplyDeleteCelestia IS NOT PINK IN THE SHOW, she's white. The animators have outright said she's white, and her toy was also originally intended to be white. (Find a pic of the Toy Fair prototype from before the show premiered. Not only was it white, but they painted her boots the right color for once.)
ReplyDeleteThe only reason her toy is pink is because Hasbro thinks they will sell more to little girls that way. Now, I think they are making a big mistake. Little girls also want a toy that represents the pony they see on the TV.
Why would white Celestia be cheaper? The show is animated in Flash. One color should not cost more than another. I mean, they went in and rederpified Derpy due to fan response.
ReplyDelete@LadyM
ReplyDeleteFancy meeting you here. Its a small Internet after all. <3
Hasbro should make an online collectors club for us pony fans that want stuff like a white Celestia, Derpy Hooves, DJ Pon-3, etc. GI Joe has a collectors club with exclusive merch you can't get in stores. Just sayin.
ReplyDelete@Rulsis
ReplyDeleteYeah, before the Fair Pony was confirmed I speculated how awesome it would be if they were giving us special collectors Ponies, like they had 300 white Celestias just for us. *wistful*
Sometimes I wonder if there isn't one or two higher ups in Hasbro who are creeped out by the adult fanbase and are doing this on purpose to discourage us?
~Steves_Minty
I gotta say that Celestia does look cool.. even if she is pink :(
ReplyDeleteRetailers ruin everything.
I hate how much Hasbro screws up the toys. On the first pic, Twilight doesn't have eyelashes ;A;
ReplyDeleteI'm not too interested in the Water Wow, but I would buy a coloring book or two.
Now if they just used more creative vectors...
Why so little Rarity? :(
ReplyDeleteThank you Jesus!
ReplyDeleteWe need more Rarity in this set. I mean, the collection is called "Canterlot", and everypony who's anypony knows Rarity wants to live in Canterlot.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a kid and I enjoyed these. 10 Years on and I'm still excited to see one of these. That might be to Princess toys but I don't care.
ReplyDeleteI find it hilarious that this is made by a subsidiary called Giddyup. (And for that black comedic twist, a subsidiary of Elmer's. You know, the glue people.)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.giddyup.com/creative-play/licensed-92/My-Little-Pony.htm
(Try not to be too shocked at MLP products sharing a website with Mythbusters stuff.)
Gotta love that "WATER WOW".
ReplyDeleteBecause if water does anything, it makes me go WOW!
Well fine, Rarity was too good for your silly Canterlot toys anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe Celestria toys aren't that bad, but I still wish they where white. The only thing I can think of is when the toyline first came out they didn't want too many white ponies. Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Celestria all being white makes the toys not pop that well. Especally since a lot of the barbie toys and other horse toys already have a few white horses and unicorns.
ReplyDelete@QuietDesperation
ReplyDeleteEven animated in Flash, she's simply cheaper being near-white.
The only thing that was changed about Derpy, was a quick little re-crooked eye.
Sideways Cellestia accentuates the Trollestia pose XD
ReplyDeleteStill with the Nightmare fuel Pony Vectors
ReplyDeleteI am plesantly suprised with the Mythbusters section of the site.
