• National Pony Writing Month Update

    The guy running National Pony Writing Month wants to address some concerns about the event as a whole.  Have some copy paste after the break!


    Hi everypony, Siraj/Noble Cause again.  Seeing the reaction last night to this event, I thought I'd pop up and assuage some worries.  For starters, the 50,000 word 'goal' is just that, but it's by no means a minimum length.  If you start to write, and you find your story only totals out to 33,784 words, or 15,000, or 24,500, that's just fine too.  As a veteran of National Novel Writing Month in November since 1999, I'd like to say I've never "won" in all the years I've participated.
         That being said, I want to make abundantly clear that this event is purely for fun.  Some folks wanting to get in on this were wondering if there were criteria, or that the 50,000 was 'needed' to win.  The only thing I 'require' by the end of this is just that you let me know you're interested, and to stop at midnight local time on September 30th, send me your currently completed work and official word count.  I intend to have a round up at the end of this mess (after I regain my sanity) and list everypony that's participated, their story titles and word count, and a link to their work for everypony to appreciate (if the writer would like that, of course).

         One other thing.  I notice that some are upset by me running this event in the first place.  I never meant to ruin any other events, or step on any hooves.  For that, I am very sorry.  There are some worried about the lack of lead time here.  I want to apologize for that personally.  Real Life rather nuked me recently, and with the announcement of season 2, the plans for this event got buried until now.  That's my doing.  However, I want to stress that I'm not forcing anypony to participate.  This is meant for pure fun and enjoyment, to get ponies that may have never written before to give things a try.

         I hope that this all helps settle some questions, and lays fears to rest.

      im very very late to the party, and as such i havent written anything for the fandom before...but i have to say, im sorely tempted to give this a go. my only fear is that, as a new fan appearing so close to the next season, nopony will take me seriously.

      Ahh, this clears up alot. Initially I didn't want to do it, because there was no way I could do 50,000 words in a month.

      But, what they hay, I'll give it a go.

      So I asked this on the other post, but I figure I'll try again:

      For the idea I have for my fic, I'd like to familiarize myself some with the more famous/infamous fics and fan works, as I'm relatively new to the fandom as a whole. Would anypony be willing to point me in the right direction. So far the only fic I've read are "Cupcakes" and the first 3 chapters of "It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door".

      For shorter fics, might I suggest Rarity's Rodeo and as a longer fic, Better Living Through Science and Ponies.

      Thanks for the heartfelt explanation of what's going on! This update makes me want to take part in it when I wasn't even thinking about it before, since I was glad to learn the person running everything cared so much.

      I guess I don't get why there should be a separate 50k word pony writing event, instead of just writing 50k about ponies for NaNoWriMo in November.

      I mean, why does everything about ponies have to be separate? It's not like NaNo bans fanfics; you can write about anything in NaNo.

      I wanna do this but..... I, being 'modest', think I'm a terrible writer. My boyfriend (bet whoever reads my comments sick of me mentioning him but he got me into this so meh) keeps saying I'm amazing at writing but thrn again thats him for you ><
      Is there any restrictions?

      It's not meant to be seperate. At the time of planning this, there was nothing going on, and there's a month buffer until NaNo proper... I'm participating in both, for example. This is all meant for fun anyway.

      Some are doing one long document, others are separating it out into chapters. Whatever works for you.

      No restrictions save not starting until midnight of the 1st of September, local time, and that you stop, send me your currently completed work and official word count by midnight on the 30th. That's it!

      A couple of good places to start, if you're looking for some longer lists to pick and choose from, would be to use the 5 and 6 star story lists here on EqD. Just click on the 'Categories' drop down menu that's on the right hand margin of the blog (it's right underneath the poll, the search tool and several other things).

      sounds like a good idea, I have an outline for a pony story I've wanted to do for a while, and since it's just turned midnight here if I started right away I'd still count as being eligible. That and it's a good way for me to commit to writing in general, something I have an issue with.

      Well Noble Cause, count me in, I have never written a fanfic before, and English is not my first language, but I'll give it my best, and as I write I'm happy to report the i have a healthy 3000 words progress

      (Not sure I'll hit 50k words, but I'm aiming for a good chunk of that.)
