The newest Mane Cast Trailer has been released, this time focusing on Twilight Sparkle. These things are all amazing, so I would highly suggest checking them out!
If you haven't seen the other two (I compiled them into PMV posts so some may have just ignored it), have some links!
This could be the successor to the Twilight "READ" poster from a while ago. Maybe there isn't as many usages for a video than a poster but it has the same feel to it: Twilight scolding you into studying.
I'm sorry, but I don't see how this isn't fitting. It is grade A Badassery and that is all there is to it. As Rainbow Dash is my God, this video is awesome. Amen.
@Shiropoint Hey Shiro, great work on all your clips! It's quite obvious you have some talent in videomaking.
'Learn' I think differs from 'Race' and 'Play' in a couple of ways. The latter two have a lot of your own graphical effects (which are quite awesome) matched to the songs in a different way from 'Learn', which utilizes a bit more subtle effects. The song itself takes a while to get up to speed, however good it is, and compared to the others I think it lacks certain accented sound effects (or it might just be my imagination from the expertedly timed graphical effects from 'Race' and 'Play').
Make no mistake, 'Learn' is good. Real good. But it's a different beast from what people might expect from the first two clips. But I for one like it, and will certainly be looking forward to the next one :)
Oh, well, this is a pleasant surprise. I like it when content makers want feedback, so I'll elaborate.
First, I should explain why the OTHER AMVs fit their respective characters best.
Rainbow Dash's music fits due to it's sheer intensity, not to mention the fact that it sounds remarkably like a race track. It reflects her personality perfectly as being a boastful flyer of the Equestrian skies, kicking dragons in the teeth, and breaking the sound barrier.
She's speed and the editing and music reflects this perfectly.
Pinkie Pie's song fits due to the sheer intensity/insanity and speed of the lyrics and beat, that reflect her mannerisms and personality of non-stop speech and partying on the spot.
She's energetic, sporadic, and joyful, which the song reflects greatly. It's the best video of this series by far.
Now, the music in Twilight Sparkles video...doesn't really fit. I can understand why you chose it, but it's just too intense for her character.
Yes, she has defeated an Ursa Minor, but that's basically the only "epic" thing she has done besides being helped by her friends in defeating Nightmare Moon. She screws up her spells often, she's socially awkward, a bookworm, and was originally sent to Ponyville to learn about friendship.
The video gives this big build up of techno/fantasy/Mystic toned music to a character that's a badass, who Twilight certainly isn't, while splicing sound clips of her acting, well, socially awkward (Yes, yes, yes!) It's jarring, which was the biggest problem of the video for me personally.
Her character was begging for anything BUT intense music. Maybe for the climax, but for the entire video it just seems out of place for her character. Maybe it was the sound clips that made the video a bit jarring, but that's my input of why I don't think it particularly fits.
@Shiropoint I'm not really knowledgeable on musical terminology, actually I have no idea about technical part of music, so I'll try to give you the idea using images that span in my head while listening to your songs hoping that someone will explain it in technical terms/motivate someone to explain it in technical terms.
Play like Pinkie Pie; The song was quickly paced with a lot of action, obviously fitting our hyperactive pony, the excited voice gave it a sugary feel and the speed up before gasping for breath reflected really well the Pinkie's partying character and continuation seemed as if Pinkie caught a second breath instead of slowly getting worn off, which really is what our over active pony's like.
Race like Rainbow Dash; The car speeding up obviously reflected RD's love for speed, with the beats stopping in between allowed me to feel the adrenaline kick that RD was going through. The heavy beat afterwards has greatly represented the power that this pony posses and love for action. It was as BAMF as RD herself.
Learn like Twilight Sparkle; The beginning rising suspension was an epic start with a slow, heavy follow up radiating dark, legendary adventure. The speed up felt like confrontation with problems that grew in intensity. I can't feel Twilight's magic nor the intelligence in this, but her adventures.
I will have to re-listen to your song and maybe update with more info.
P.s. that doesn't mean that I don't love this piece, it's absolutely brilliant, it's just that it doesn't fit the Twilight theme. :/
Meh, not my thing. I really don't like that style of music. And I agree with the anonymous above who said that it really didn't fit with Twilight at all.
All of these themes are awesome, though I'm inclined to agree that, though Learn Like Twilight Sparkle, in terms of what it's "saying" musically, is awesome for portraying her hardcore-ness, it does seem to forget about her more intelligent, bookish side, like the music is only managing to portray half of her. Still, I most definitely enjoy the music, and hopefully one day we'll see the other side of her portrayed just as epically.
Hopefully we'll see Fluttershy next (Love Like Fluttershy? Care Like Fluttershy?)!
Yeah, really not digging this one at all. The first two were much, much better. The editing in Learn was really sloppy, for some reason the color balance was whacked way out, song choice didn't fit at all and when added together it frankly felt haphazard as hell.
Tsparx really is the best and I guess I got my hopes up too high, especially after how amazing Play was.
In all honesty, this is not on the same level as the previous two videos. It's not a bad video, but there isn't the same level of quality from the previous videos in terms of effects, not to mention the song isn't as fitting to the highlighted character as the previous videos were. Aim to keep consistent quality with these.
Hummm..... She charged headfirst at both the Evil Queen of the night, and a rampaging Hyrda. Vanquished the Ursa Minor. Gave a Unicorn wings of beauty. Suprised Celestia herself with her raw talent. Has braved the Everfree forest by herself. Moved hundreds of apples simultaneously (see end of Applebuck Season), got 4th place in her first ever race when she herself is not an athlete. Outran a dragon, walked upto a dragon. Changed the eating habits (and by assumption the bodies as well) of an entire race of semi-intelligent creatures. She's burst into flames. And for one episode, could teleport at will. And you say she an't bad-ace?
it is different, yes. I think people might've gotten the impression that after the first two all of these trailers would have the same music and... I wouldn't say style... err... soemthing else.
All of these are supposed to differ from eachother. This is more the 'conventional' trailer.
@Anonymous who replied,
I feel I'm always taking risks with these. Doubly so given the dedicated fanbase :)
Personally I think the music fits the particular scenes in the video, though you may be onto something when saying it doesn't fully encompass the more 'geeky' side of character.
That said, it is through her (mis)adventures, which turn out to be fairly intense, that she learns a lot and not so much through sitting in her tree and being a bookworm.
Hm, it seems we're talking about two particular sides of this character and I didn't bridge them with this. A misinterpretation on my part.
Thanks!
@Anonymous who replied #2,
Errr... all of the above :P
@everyone else
Thanks for the commentary, I'm contemplating a remake.
I'm confused by the amount of criticism this video got here. I guess there is a reputation to keep up after Play like Pinkie Pie, though ^^
I think this video was really good. Many people here are discussing about whether or not the song, the feel of the video fits with Twilight. I think it fits very well! Twilight is a pony that get things done. She will help you at her best, when she can. Even if that means going somewhere dangerous. This video fits awesomely with that personality.
I can see what some mean by her geekish, tame, and innocent side. But that's not all there is to her, and may be the less important part of her. That's why I really not feel like this video is missing something.
Secondly, although you did use less of your own graphical effects and more clips of the show, the editing is superb! Everything is synced to the music really well, and the 'yesyesyes' part in the middle was a fun small intermission. Which you've also done in your other two video, I think.
The only criticism I can give is the title. 'Learn' may give the idea that we're solely talking about her geekish side. A different title might have fitted better with this video.
In short, I think this is as awesome as your other two videos, and I can't wait for the other three!
i think everyone was expecting something like play and race, but twilight doesnt act like RD or pinkie, they are both exiteable, active ponies, unlike twilight, so of course this one would take a bit longer to speed up and will sound quite different from the first two, ugh this comment is loooong
I already commented the video with Shiro this morning on YouTube, but your comment made me think again at it. On YouTube another brony replied to my comment, which was similar to yours, telling me that the "learn" word could be interpreted such that Twilight is growing, becoming more mature and essentially, learning.
This could fit also with the lacking badass aspect of Twilight's character you highlined. But through her adventures, which are the main content of the video, she keeps learning and improving herself to become a better pony.
I can see the sense of that comment more clearly, now...

ReplyDeleteUrsa Minor Electron Remix. YES!
ReplyDeleteYES!
ReplyDeleteOn second thought, this song is horribly matched to the video clips shown.
ReplyDeleteThat. Was. AWESOME!!!
ReplyDeleteAll of these are epic awesome.
ReplyDeletePersonally i think Play like Pinkie Pie is the best so far.
ReplyDeleteCelldweller and Ponies? My body was not ready.
ReplyDeleteEh, doesn't fit Twilight Sparkle at all.
ReplyDeleteThe others fit the character perfectly, but this one...eh. The editing is good, it just doesn't fit the character.
Just amazing, video editing at it's finest.
ReplyDeleteLike a Boss...
ReplyDeleteThis could be the successor to the Twilight "READ" poster from a while ago. Maybe there isn't as many usages for a video than a poster but it has the same feel to it: Twilight scolding you into studying.
ReplyDeleteDo CMC!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't fit her? I don't care, it was still epic.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but I don't see how this isn't fitting. It is grade A Badassery and that is all there is to it. As Rainbow Dash is my God, this video is awesome. Amen.
ReplyDeleteThis NEEDS to be an official trailer for the show.
ReplyDelete@bronydash
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is epic, but without a song that would fit twilight, the collection will be incomplete imo, don't you agree?
Totally saw that moment of "squee!!!" coming.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Twi may be the most badass pony now.
I expected a lot of things, but the song not fitting definitely wasn't one of them :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting feedback, could someone elaborate?
- Shiropoint
Holy crap, seriously. Hasbro has got to look into this.
ReplyDeleteRead a book!
ReplyDeleteRead a book!
Read a motherfuckin book!
Almost gave me Goosebumps.
ReplyDeleteThree stars. Attractively put together but not quite in character enough.
ReplyDeletethis makes ponies look more badass then vin diesel
ReplyDeleteAwesome.

Pinkie Pie is da bestest.
ReplyDeleteWoah... the contrast between the show animation and the music style gave me derp-eyes.
ReplyDeleteIt's less "Learn like Twilight Sparkle" than "Be Badass like Twilight Sparkle".
ReplyDeleteI am okay with that :p
These are really clever.
ReplyDeleteNot as good as the other two. Meeeeehhhhh...
ReplyDeleteI think this is the best one so far.

Twilight looks really kinda bleached in hers

MAKE THESE SEASON 2 PROMOS!!!
ReplyDeleteI just dropped everything to watch this, and I was not dissappointed.
ReplyDeleteHOLY GOD THAT WAS AMAZING
ReplyDeleteMeh, not my thing. I really don't like that style of music. And I agree with the anonymous above who said that it really didn't fit with Twilight at all.
ReplyDeleteHo. Lee. Shee. Yut.
ReplyDeleteNot as awe inspiring as the first two, but I still loved it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the twilight sparkle one.

these are fucking epic...need to convert your friend to brony? show them these trailers
ReplyDeletePinkie's is still my favorite...probably because she is best pony
I was so happy to see the squee in there. Hasbro, please use these as official trailers, like, now.
ReplyDeleteIt fits if you don't look at from her bookish side, but more her epic adventures full of monsters magic and friendship side.
ReplyDeleteYeah, really not digging this one at all. The first two were much, much better. The editing in Learn was really sloppy, for some reason the color balance was whacked way out, song choice didn't fit at all and when added together it frankly felt haphazard as hell.

Although, I will admit, the sudden crescendo into her jumping for joy and "Yes" was a bit jarring.
ReplyDeleteI think Twilights 'Pinkie Pie' hairdo courtesy of RBD actually looks pretty awesome :) oh, cool video too by the way!
ReplyDeleteThis has the most divided response so far.

That's the story I wanted to tell, Twilight learning and growing through her adventures.
Work like Applejack
