Remember that official fan forum I talked about like a million years ago? Well, I was just leafing through it this morning and I found an interesting back-and-forth between a fan and the page's admins. This was apparently posted on Tuesday, so, apologies if you've seen this already. I'm slow.
If there was indeed a Derpy toy released, I highly doubt it would be called such- both for legal and aesthetic reasons. Do you think they'd go with Bright Eyes? or Ditzy Doo? Or is Cereal just reading too much into this?
What do you ponies think?

Ditzy Doo>>>>>>> Bright Eyes
ReplyDeleteMAKE IT HAPPEN
ReplyDeleteThis is...
ReplyDeleteWonderful.
/)^3^(\ So AWESOME
ReplyDeleteIf this happens, Yamino will go on a rampage...
ReplyDelete:D
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
ReplyDeleteYes.
I would buy this.
Justice
ReplyDeleteOne step closer to getting Vinyl Scratch/DJ P0N-3 toy...
ReplyDeleteWho cares about the box name? Derpy toy!
ReplyDelete(Though if it doesn't have derped eyes, I will be disappoint... Dx)
~Dark~
Its Ditzy cereal.
ReplyDeleteDitzy Doo
ReplyDeleteI would hope they go with Ditzy Doo, and still opt to keep the Wall-eyed look. It just wouldn't be Derpy Hooves without those eyes.
ReplyDelete... We can have Ditzy, (Presumably) after they release Season 2? In the wise words of Rainbow Dash "OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH"
ReplyDeleteDo. Want.
ReplyDeleteAlso, they'd probably go with Ditzy Doo. It's safe and recognizable.
We'll all call her derpy anyways and the rare variant will be the one with the correct eyes
ReplyDeleteSO IT IS WRITTEN, SO SHALL IT BE!
ReplyDeleteYesssssss. All of my money. Take it.
ReplyDeleteI feel a sudden urge to send this to Yamino, just to see her reaction. xD
ReplyDeleteShe is going to see it anyway. ^-^
(Don't take this the wrong way, you are awesome :3)
I think somepony needs to stop browsing forums and get back to the update queue... how many fics did you say there were lined up? Some 49? Surely there's at least ONE worthy of being posted in there...
ReplyDeleteBetter get going on that, Seth...
This has ABSOLUTELY MADE MY DAY! Please let it be true, PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteYay Ditzy. :D I hope they go with the Ditzy name. It's a good one.
ReplyDeleteIf I were running the zoo, I might take a cue from some of the fan writers: establish Ditzy Doo as her real name, with “Derpy Hooves” being a (not very kind) nickname.
ReplyDelete—Dave Bryant
Maybe I'm just 'out of it', but is there any real reason why they couldn't use the name Derpy? I always thought that the word was more of an onomatopoeia than an actual insult word?
ReplyDeleteThat said, I certainly wouldn't complain over them using 'Ditzy Doo', since thanks to the Winter Wrap Up episode it would confirm a little bit more silliness to our favorite wall-eyed pegasus.
Ditzy toy, yeah!
ReplyDeleteIs that a Bijou avatar I see?
ReplyDeleteYey~
Oh, and just how epic is this piece of news? Over twenty comments in, and nopony wanted to waste the time yodeling about being first. If that doesn't make clear just how badly a Derpy/Ditzy toy is needed by this fan base, nothing can.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteNow, now. This is newsworthy, at least to a mild extent, and don’t forget that plowing through a “slush pile” (as the publishing industry calls it) to vet stories is a long process—especially when only a few people are doing it in their copious free time.

@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYeah... too bad this was posted by Cereal, and having spoken with Seth myself, I know that they are working on the fics.
I think they would go with Ditzy, they used it in Winter Wrap Up, it's the closest link between canon and Derpy. More importantly, the fact that they're open to a Derpy means that there is hope at seeing an official version of other background characters. If they ever make this, or Trixie, or Lyra, I will be there the minute they hit the shelf.

*slams fist on table*
ReplyDeleteALL MY BITS
I am so very, very, VERY okay with this.
ReplyDeleteinb4 the toy, if ever made, has straight eyes
ReplyDelete@eaglehooves
ReplyDeleteYeah. Would totally throw all of my money at molded-style background ponies.
All. Of. It.
I will settle for nothing less than Derpy Hooves.
ReplyDeleteomigoshomigoshomigosh I want a Ditzy Doo!
ReplyDeleteSHUT UP AND TAKE MY MUFFINS!!
ReplyDeleteBright Eyes if they keep it normal,
ReplyDeleteDitzy Doo if they appeal to us and derp the eyes.
or, they could "accidently" derp a few Bright Eyes in each batch jsut for the collectors >:)
They said stay tuned it could mean anything.
ReplyDeleteImagine the release day for this...
ReplyDeleteToys'r'us store clerk completely oblivious to the MLP following.
Sees line of roughly 60 individuals between 15 and 35.
All wanting to purchase Ditzy Doo.
Such thoughts. They bring a smile to my face.
I think they'll release it as Ditzy Doo. As for the issue with the eyes, I think that, given they've accepted it as cannon and the character makes several appearances with her 'derpy' eyes, I doubt they would have many qualms in releasing the toy as such also.
ReplyDeleteIt wont happen, they reply with stay tuned... to EVERYTHING
ReplyDeleteDitzy Doo if Derpy hooves is not allowed
ReplyDeleteHasbro should release a "My little Brony" toy set that includes show accuate Lyra, bon-bon, Octavia, vinyl scratch, "Ditzy Doo", and doctor whooves.
ReplyDeleteAll for us bronies
I'll hunt it down and grab one even if it kills me or my wallet. Then proceed to make muffins (what kind?).
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure they will go for Ditzy Doo (as per "Winter Wrap Up"). Regardless what name becomes official, Derpy Hooves will always be Derpy Hooves.
Never been a fan of the "Bright Eyes" name, myself. My heart's set on Ditzy if we can't get Derpy. And really, what's the point of making a Derpy toy without her signature eyes? They made her the ensemble darkhorse she is, after all, and Celestia knows the fans would just paint the eyes over en masse, like the five jillion white Celestia repaints.
ReplyDeleteIdeally, they'd release it as D. Hooves, although have a suspicion it'll be called Ditzy Doo.
ReplyDeleteEither way, I'm still amazed that this fanbase could take a background pony and get a toy made based on their actions.
I'm pretty sure the people working at Hasbro are the greatest people ever.
Why can't they call her Derpy Hooves? First this, then Lyra toy! THAT will be cool. Then again, Accurate plushies would be nice too....
ReplyDeleteShe'll more than likely be called Ditzy Doo as Derpy Hooves is her Fannon name.
ReplyDeleteEither way, it would be nice to have a toy of the BG pony that helped jump start the popularity of MLP FIM
Oh, how I would love it if they release a Derpy toy!
ReplyDeleteIt would be an even greater moment than the time that Derpy became canon.
I want it to be called ditzy doo and I want it crossed eyed and if they can I'd also like a two pack of lyra and bonbon
ReplyDeleteI believe that "Derpy Hooves" probably won't be allowed, so they will go back to their original name of Ditzy Doo.
ReplyDeleteThis is fine, but the entire fandom will always call her Derpy, "Bright Eyes" is just when people want to be b'aww or d'aww with her.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much the price would have to be to cover a limited run like that. $50 each? $100?
MY MONEY HASBRO. Allow me to give you my money! We must have the Derpy! She is our precious!
ReplyDeleteOh, and DJ PON-3, she's our precious too.
If they do make her, I will be very surprised if she actually has the derped eyes. They'll probably just give her normal eyes. Remember that for MLP, the main demographic is little girls, and most parents won't want to buy a toy with derped eyes for their daughter. They'd just think it was ugly.
ReplyDeleteIf they DO make her wall-eyed, she'll probably be released in very small numbers and become a rare collectible so that Hasbro won't have to worry about making a bunch that won't sell.
Never again shall I doubt the influence of this community
ReplyDeleteinb4 purple hair from WWU.
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you won't do that Hasbro. Pink Celestia, fine, but not purple haired Ditzy.
If Hasbro puts out a Ditzy Doo toy, I will allow myself to further succumb to my obsession with MLP, and actually buy a pony.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I really don't like that she is still referred to as Derpy Hooves. It's such a hurtful name if you ask me. Besides, Ms. Faust herself has talked about naming the character Ditzy Doo.
Guys, they didn't say there would be a Derpy toy. Seems more like "we aren't allowed to say anything" to me.
ReplyDeleteBesides, we shouldn't get a Derpy at least until after we get toys that actually look like the characters in the show.
oh sweet merciful muffins yes :D
ReplyDeleteRead too many fanfics that named her ditzy, soo I'm going with ditzy and I'm sticking to it.
ReplyDeleteI always laugh when you take Facebook MLP page stuff seriously, or even on Twitter. Stay tunned is the response to EVERY POST they do, but yeah keep dreaming it doesnt hurt anyone.
ReplyDeleteDitzy Dew sound's better and makes sense.
ReplyDeletemybodyisreadyshutupandtakemybits! TAKE THEM!
ReplyDeleteAhem.
With that out the way, yeah, still skeptical. They say stay tuned a lot.
But lawdy do I hope this comes to fruition.
Of course, "stay tuned" is just marketing speak for "please stop asking me that"
ReplyDeleteDERPY TOY IS OFFICIAL PROTOTYPE FOR LINE OF MY LITTLE PONY ACTION FIGURES WITH KUNG FU GRIP
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else think this is a bad idea?
ReplyDeleteI really don't see why there would be a problem with the name Derpy, the word "Derp" is not under copyright as far as I know and it's not really that offensive of a term
ReplyDeleteShe best be called Derpy. That's her name.
ReplyDeleteIf there ever is a Derpy toy, I would prefer it to be called Derpy for sure. Ditzy is OK and would be the only other remotely acceptable name but since the character was effectively born from the fandom, I believe it should use the name the fandom gave her which is Derpy.
ReplyDeleteHow could "Derpy Whooves" possibly have any legal issues?
Also, I still don't see how some people can think Derpy is more insulting than Ditzy. Ditzy implies stupidity on the character as a whole.
@Curttehmurt
ReplyDeleteMr. Derp
Got to say, that having heard all three names used - 'Derpy', 'Ditzy' and 'Bright Eyes', 'Derpy' is the one I like the best, if only because that's how we discovered her - she was Derpy Hooves from day one - I know some can view it as hurtful, and yet I think its a name that (to quote the original 101 Dalmatians) sounds beautiful and affectionate if said with love.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for Ditzy or Bright Eyes being her canon name if 'Derpy' can be established as an affectionate nickname.
But culturally, Curttehmurt, "Derp" is a derogatory term against people with Down's Syndrome.
ReplyDeleteAs a person who is regularly around children with Down's, this is sort of unnerving to see the My Little Pony franchise totally okay with it...
Hamtaro? MLP? Derpy? I love Facebook!
ReplyDeleteI'm all for the name Bright Eyes, mostly because of the Art Garfunkel song from Watership Down.
ReplyDeleteIf they make a Derpy Hooves/Ditzy Doo doll, I would not care what they would call it, as long as one is made, I'm fine with that, heck, I would not care if they decided to call her "Derpy Doo" or something like that...
ReplyDeleteAlso, I looked up "derp" on KnowYourMeme, and discovered that it originated from an episode of South Park as a joke about a Rob Schneider movie, the term is not copyrighted at all, but we may never know what Hasbro might do...
For the next few months I am going to check the Trademark office daily to check for new Hasbro trademarks.
ReplyDeleteBright Eyes seems like it would be a good name.
ReplyDeleteA Derpy toy would be awesome. You can bet that a Derpy toy would sell out of pretty much everywhere in record times. 10 seconds flat! AS for the name, if they didn't use the name "Derpy Hooves". They may just revert to her originally-intended name, "Ditzy Doo".
ReplyDelete@Furyhunter
ReplyDeleteIf this sort of thing was actually something to worry about, Nabisco would have renamed Cheese Nips decades ago.
See, to me, 'Ditzy' actually sounds more offensive than 'Derpy' - don't really know why.
ReplyDeleteAbout time the worlds greatest mail courior got a toy of her own.
ReplyDeleteBetcha she'll be called Ditzy Doo on the box.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteUm, you do realize that Hasbro lost the right to many G1 pony names because they were too lazy to keep the copyrights/ trademarks up to date, right?
Your time would be much better spent watching PONY!!!!!
Who cares what it says on the front of the box, I'm just going to tear her out of it when she's released anyway.
ReplyDeleteHasbro probably isn't aware of "Bright Eyes" nickname. My guess is they'll either go with Ditzy Doo (which would fit in well with some of their previous pony names like Toola Roola and Tink-a-Tink-a-Too (NO LIE, that's a real name)) or else name her something based on her cutie mark. Like "Blissful Bubbles" or something. Personally I think just "Bubbles" would be the route to take if they wanted to do that, but Hasbro does so enjoy putting adjectives into pony names!
I really hope they release a toy of her, in any case! And that the eyes are wonky. Hehehehe, they could make a toy where you press a button and her eyes go in circles . . .
@Furyhunter
ReplyDeleteCulturally? Um no, it isn't, by that logic, the word "Duh" is an insult to people with Downs. Look up the history of the term on knowyourmeme.com, it's purely a word made popular on the internet and does not come from anything making fun of people with Downs and nor is it ever typically used in that context either.
I'd rather have Ditzy Doo over Derpy Hooves any day.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWho knows what Hasbro has planned? I mean, for all we know, they might go really out of left field and use a name I've seen for her on FIMFiction: "Bubbly Delight".
ReplyDeletethey love the "stay tuned..." punchline.
ReplyDeleteThey tend to say that ALOT when trying to give cliffhangers about toys...
"Will there be boy ponies toys too?"
STAY TUNED!
"Will there be community loved ponies toys too?"
STAY TUNED!
"And what about..."
STAY TUNED!!!!!!
I don't see why they couldn't make a collectable figure targeted at bronies named "Derpy Hooves," wall eyes and all. After all, Hasbro already makes collectors' MLP figures (see, for example, the 2009 Comic-Con pony: http://mylittleponycollector.blogspot.com/2009/04/2009-my-little-pony-fair-and-comic-con.html), but so far they've all been targeted at pre-FIM fans.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are seriously optimistic. Did you watch the Hasbro interview from the MLP con? "Stay tuned" is very clearly "No," with a side of "but we know we've got you by the short and curlies and we're damn well gonna keep you there."
ReplyDelete@Taliesin
ReplyDeleteMhm. It's a way to give hope when you're not absolutely sure of the answer at the time.
I'm all of Ditzy Doo...
ReplyDeleteI think they'll call her Derpy... after all, that's how the original answer called her, innit? "We love Derpy too!"
ReplyDeleteAnd we do.
Because unlike Ditzy Doo, Derpy was "birthed" by the fans.
She's our little wall-eyed foal.
Hence, I'd rather have a Derpy than a Ditzy.
And if the toy comes with Dinky as an accessory, "Take all my money" will be a freakin' understatement.
If it comes out.. then I'd hope they called her Ditzy Doo. It's a cute name, and Derpy is just.. I don't know, aside from sounding a little uncomfortable, the root of the word is kinda cruel, even if it has varied out to mean all sorts of things.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE DERPY I WANT TO COMB HER HAIR NOW
ReplyDeleteDerpy > Ditzy > Bright. Bright Eyes doesn't sound very Derpy
@LadyM
ReplyDeleteSince we're dreaming: Instead of a button, how about an infrared emitting plastic muffin that makes her eyes spin when she (the sensor) can see it?
THEY BETTER NOT CALL HER DITZY DOO!!! It implies that she is the dumb pegasus from Winter Wrap Up. And DERPY IS NOT DUMB!!! SHE IS A NORMAL PONY WITH CROOKED EYES!!
ReplyDeleteConsidering Ditzy is a different pony, I certainly would hope they would go with Bright Eyes.
ReplyDelete^THIS.
ReplyDeleteAlso,
ALERT
DERPY TOY INCOMING
READY THE WALLETS AND BANK ACCOUNTS FOR MAXIMUM PONIFICATION
isnt ditzy doo the derpy's baby?
ReplyDeleteWell, i saw their 'press conference' on YouTube.
ReplyDelete'Stay tuned...' was their standard answer for everything they didn't understood.
If they do make a Derpy toy with "derped" eyes, no matter the name I'm buying it. If it has the name Derpy Hooves I'll buy 3 or more of it. I'll only open one and keep the others in original packaging.
ReplyDeleteWishful thinking, but if her accessories include a mailbag... Sold Out FOREVER!!!
@Anonymous I never thought of Dinky & mailbags accessories, but now that you said it I'd be willing to give all my bits for one. Well, all of them that the university hasn't already claimed. No matter what, I would find a way to get it if they actually gave us the wall-eyed pegasus that we love so much.
ReplyDeleteTo all the anons who keep posting pessimistic comments about it not happening, we realize that's a possibility. However, Hasbro left the door open, and they'll (hopefully) see the enormous demand among the community, so there's the possibility they will. No one here can say for certain either way. If you want to rain on parades though, I'd like it not to be the one for my favorite pegasus. A brony can dream, right?
/signature
@LadyM
ReplyDeleteBubbles would be a great name for her, reminds me of PPG Bubbles too.
There's another fanfic name I personally like, Bubbly Shines.
She'll always be Derpy in my heart.
ReplyDeleteAny Transformers fan will tell you that the name on the toy means nothing.
OMG. I'll bet she'll be called Ditzy Doo, but I can see "Bright Eyes" working as that sounds like your more typical pony name.
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it, fans will still probably call her by whatever their own preferred name is. That would be wonderful, though, for her to get her own official toy. Nothing but love for Derpy. <3
Even if they call her Ditzy Doo I'd buy it so fast if they give her derped eyes.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone knows the trademark status of the word "Derpy"?
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteDoes no one else think that Ditzy Doo sounds way way too much like another of Scooby's cousins? Like she should be hanging out with Daisy Doo and Scooby Dum?
Hasbro should do a limited run collectors edition (sold via mail order so I can get it here in the UK). It should have derp eyes and be called Derpy Hooves, then they could just do a regular toy with normal eyes called Ditzy Doo.
ReplyDeleteI just hope that they make her into a Plushie that is show accurate and not messed up looking like most of the plush toys released so far. same thing goes for if they make her as a plastic figure.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd prefer for them to call her Ditzy Doo. Derpy is a good fanon name, but I think the creators should go with the name originally planned (assuming Ditzy Doo is referring to Derpy; I believe it's a good fit) rather than pandering to us bronies. I think that having a pony with a canon name originating from an Internet meme could be a little jarring
ReplyDeleteAs if we won't all call her Derpy anyway...
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, ALL OF MY MONEY TOWARDS THAT. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE COST, I NEED IT.
First choice would be Derpy Hooves. But ive always thought that the 'hooves' would sound odd in the show. They could always go both ways, call her Derpy Doo.
ReplyDeleteAwesomesause! :) But... knowing Hasbro, it's probably gonna be pink or something crazy :s
ReplyDeleteThe creator of MLP:FiM Lauren Faust has actually now referred to her as Derpy Hooves on her journal on deviantart and on her sketch of Derpy she recently did.
ReplyDeleteShe has also said that fans have christened her Derpy Hooves but said that it was for a background character and the name was not officially stated as Ditzy Doo. Apparently she was thinking of using the Ditzy Doo name for another character
ReplyDeleteHer name is Derpy, i dont care what Hasbro calls ehr cause theyre uptight panty waist assholes who care more about the minorities butt hurt then the fans.
ReplyDeleteWell, Hot Topic is releasing something of a derpy toy for their contest thing.
ReplyDelete
