• Rainbow Dash Actually Obeys Laws Of Physics For Once

Today we're taking a break from talking about rainbows in the sky and instead talking about how awesome Rainbow Dash is.

She's not as awesome as Rarity, but she comes pretty close sometimes. It's not her fault, really. It's tough to come close to perfection. It's like coming close to the speed of light- the closer you get, the harder it gets to actually reach that plateau of pristine pony perfection. Although, supposedly the way that warp drives work is by squeezing the space time in front and behind the ship with a projected field of some kind so that you never have to deal with the relativistic effects and energy consequences of approaching the speed of light. It's called the Alcubierre drive. Look it up.

Anyway, so, in an episode whose name I can't remember just from the above picture, Rainbow Dash flew through some clouds, making some nice holes. At first I think we all assumed it was cartoon physics and left it at that. However, supposedly this can actually occur if the object is moving fast enough through said cloud, as soon above.

I don't have an article to go along with the post this time, but, it's hard to argue with those kinds of results.

If something is going fast enough, doesn't it start creating that pocket of air, like just as something is breaking the speed of sound (that visible thingamajargon)? And if so, is that thingamajargon not probably rounded?

    31. If you want my personal opinion on why Rarity is the best pony, it crushes her when her friends don't like what she made. You can immediately label this as a lack of self-confidence or a major sense of self-centeredness of her own designs, but keep in mind the only reason she was making them was so her friends could look their best at one of the most prestigious events in Equestria. She didn't quit, either- she listened to them and tried to make their outfits exactly how they wanted them, even though the results were horrible. Far from being self-centered, she was being a friend far and beyond the call of duty.

She wanted them all to succeed and wanted to make them happy, and that's why Rarity is best pony. There.

    32. Actually the Alcubierre drive only squeezs space-time in the front. It expands it in the back so you get an attraction from the front and a repulsion from the back, resulting in the movement of the pocket of space-time.

      ReplyDelete
    36. @Anonymous

      Game on.

Essentially, you begin with the assumption that the Pony laws of physics are as close to ours as possible, and that there are no animation errors in the scene. My theory is that the Sonic Rainboom is actually a misnomer, and that the Rainboom part isn't caused by exceeding the speed of sound, but rather by some other constant, maybe terminal velocity or some friction-with-air speed. But once a pony breaks this 'Air barrier' as I'll call it, they can accelerate freely again, and they quickly cause a real sonic boom by exceeding the speed of sound then. This opens the possibility for lots of explanations. I haven't gotten the chance to, but I plan on doing some sort of trig to figure out exactly how far Rarity had to fall before hitting the ground, which would give you a good estimate on a) the terminal velocity of a pony (yea yea different position affects that, it's a lower bound) and b) how far Rainbow Dash had to accelerate to catch Rarity. If you look through the whole series, there's overwhelming proof that Pegausus ponies weigh significantly less that regular ponies and unicorns, espically with the innate ability to walk on clouds and that one scene in applebuck season where Applejack is able to launch Rainbow Dash many times higher than herself.

Right. Back to the Rainboom. So obviously the fact that it's a rainbow to begin with has to do with the fact that Rainbow Dash is made of rainbows. Upon the...

Okay, I just got another way of thinking of it. You know when you heat water, before turning to steam, some of the energy instead goes to breaking the chemical bonds in the substance? Well, I believe that the resistance Rainbow Dash finds while trying to break the air barrier are caused by her attempted increase in kinetic energy instead going into causing fancy chemistry happening in her body, so that when that finally finishes, she can resume accelerating, exceeding terminal velocity, causing a sonic boom. Whatever chemicals cause Rainbow's tail to have its colors are now reacting with the oxygen or whatever in the air, causing precipitates of rainbow colors to form behind her. The visible white barrier in front of her is caused by air being compressed faster than it can move out of the way, heating up in accordance with Charles' Law. This is done in such a significant fashion that the air molecules ionize and emit light. As the pressure increases further, the effect becomes elongated, and begins to siphon off some of the rainbow chemicals.

Hey, don't take it like that, they're on this blog to express love for ponies, so it's kinda reasonable that if they love somepony more than others, they express their choice in that matter :p (And here I am talking of love just in a "preference" subtext, I don't care nor I have ever cared what people on the Internet do with their private parts)

Plus, most importantly, these random banters are generally accepted by the ED community. People think it's funny and entertaining, and I do too. They're cool to watch (once Seth and Cereal had an edit war about this very preference reason, and I liked it for one), and for me, I feel the bloggers being closer to the readers if they take time to talk about themselves and/or what they like.

    58. That cloud hole is a common phenomena caused by an airplane flying through a cloud of supercooled water droplets.

Supercooled droplet are highly unstable (as they are liquids which are below their normal freezing point), so the turbulence caused by an airplane causes the droplet to instantly freeze into ice, releasing some heat as it turn from liquid to a solid.

The heat released causes 2 things. Firstly it causes a convection current, which propagates the air turbulence, leading to more supercooled droplets turning to ice. And the heat released is enough to evaporate the water droplets.

The two factors work in tandem to cause these cloud holes which maybe up to 50km wide.
