I didn't think it was possible, but apparently a media site likes us! And they did actual research!
Animation World Network recently posted this article all about Friendship is Magic, covering everything from the history of the show, to why it is so successful among it's accidental demographic.
This one dug out some really interesting extra information too! There is a whole section about Derpy Hooves (Sounds like Jayson was the culprit here!) and the team's initial reaction to her, as well as how Lauren Faust was hired to work on FiM in the first place.
You can find the article here. It's ditching the nightly roundup, because it's awesome. I'll spam the blog with Trixie for a week if you complain!

ReplyDeleteIf they made a positive brony article (to say we are liked is egotistical to say the least when it was not specifically said), its to the credit of bronies like myself whomare level-headed and pick up the pieces because the majority of you give us a bad name,
ReplyDeleteis that Trixie spam a promise?
ReplyDelete@AnonymousMost likely no :D
ReplyDeleteFOR THE LOVE OF CELESTIA DO NOT COMPLAIN
ReplyDelete-_______-
I, too, wish to file a complaint ;D
ReplyDeleteI hardly find it unusual that an animation centric site would write a positive about an animated program or it's fans. Now when I see a mainstream website write a positive article without a hint of cynicism or unflattering pictures of fans then I will be impressed.
ReplyDeleteThat's... Genuinely very well-written and well-researched. No drama, no dry reporting and no insincere support. It's almost like real journalism still exists!
ReplyDeleteWeeeey attempting to use witty humour to disguise laziness to run a website as a self-titled 'staff member'. Such inspiration, all that lack of dedication and all..
ReplyDeletePOSITIVE RECEPTION? This pleases me.
ReplyDeleteIf I complain and I like Trixie does it still count towards the inevitable Trixieflood?
ReplyDelete*commences the slow clap*
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to get a little positive press, and to not be looked at as pedophilic dregs of society.
ReplyDeleteBut I thought you WANTED complaining.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'd like to file a complaint about no nightly roundup. And Trixie isn't very metal.
ReplyDeleteComplaint... complaint complaint complaint
ReplyDeleteCOOL!
ReplyDeleteNow I have something to rub in my friend's faces when they criticize me for being a brony!
Oh and Seth, you spam the blog with Trixie EVERY week. Whats the difference? XD
Is this the proper room for an argument?
ReplyDelete@Dave Mustang (AKA the clophater)
ReplyDeleteWho said anything about no Nightly Roundup? He said he's not putting this in the Nightly Roundup.
I am NOT complaining.
ReplyDeleteYou want 'hear' complaining?
Well, tough, because I liked this article.
It's nice not to be compared to man-children. I mean, for Celestia sakes. . . Is liking a show about ponies really THAT freaky?
You got to admit, Animation World Network did what NPR refused to do, what Fox failed to do, and what Cracked almost succeeded in doing but instead convinced everyone that bronies were unemployed.
ReplyDeleteA very well done article, and actually had two things that I did not know.
ReplyDeleteOne: I never realised the similarity between Faust and Frankie
Two: That she was an animator on Cats Don't Dance. I freaking love that movie.
I also like how they had a relatively recent page count of EqD, most seem to be a week or two behind.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to get off their high horse, Amirite? xD
Seriously tho, dude, chill. There are plenty of people who aren't over the top about it, and the more exposure we get at any rate, the more people will begin to take us seriously, no matter what they say about us.
@Brian
ReplyDeleteOh, I misread it. Okay, but Trixie still isn't very Metal.
No nightly roundup?
ReplyDeleteFINE, i bettter see more toy posts
Hey, we got something positive, that's at least something right?
ReplyDeleteI complain about of Trixie´s spam because is (list of facts that doesn´t matter and will only encourage you to make a post of Trixie)
ReplyDeleteBTW this is sarcasm
Good article but am I the only one who doesn't like the Derpy Hooves stuff?
ReplyDelete..........
I'm banished to the moon aren't I?
I hope The Colbert Report or Daily show covers Bronies soon. But not South Park. That's suicide for the fandom.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw that she was involved with "Quest for Camelot" I smiled and said, "No wonder that was good."
ReplyDeleteThe more you know.
Can we have trixie anyway?
ReplyDelete@Muffinsforever
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Quest for Camelo sucked. Or maybe I just watch to much Nostalgia Critic.
It would be cool if Nostalgia Chick covered Frienship is Magic.
Positive? What, have most reviews so far really been that negative?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteEeyup. Clearly you haven't seen the NPR or Fox videos.
If I add my complaint too can we still get Trixie?
ReplyDelete@Zeptometer
ReplyDelete.....why do we need to be taken seriously? What is so high and mighty and oh-so-awesome about us bronies? That we turned a show aimed at little girls into a older guys wet dream?
Seriously, the ego of a lot of you, thinking 'briny' is some form of status.
@Flutterfan
ReplyDelete+My Typical Bronies have pretty much taken derpy and violated and destroyed her. Overrated and senseless.
@Dave Mustang (AKA the clophater)
ReplyDeleteFox wasn't intentionally negative.
The one video where the guy was a complete neighsayer and decided to "joke" about how bronies were unemployed men filing for disability was negative because the guy sucks at comedy.
The other one was actually pretty positive. "They shouldn't feel any shame", and "I would like to see what the fuss was all about".
So wait... were we just asked to basically complain and then allowed to get away with it?
ReplyDeleteExcuse me I have to get a bucket of feral ferocious ferrets to fling fullfillingly into someones face.
They are my form of complaint and if you aren't happy send me a Honey Badger back as a return salvo.
I think I can take it even if my friends in the COBRA organization were defeated by one sent in by the GI Joes. They found out Honey Badgers were tough sons of guns and Cobra Commander doesn't have badger proof tanks, airplanes, soldiers and biological/mystical/technological experiments.
@D. Shadows
ReplyDeleteClassic.
Anyways can we get more complaints and, therefore Trixie, instead of negativity.
Seth your so lucky im too tired to hunt you down for skipping the nightly round-up.
ReplyDelete@Puzzle Hooves
ReplyDeleteLies and slander, my good brony. He said nothing of the sort, he's just giving this article its own post instead of throwing it into the roundup.
complains* bring on the trixie!
ReplyDeleteXD
Reading comments, reading comments.....Oh ponyfeathers! What was I going to say?
ReplyDeleteOh well, about the comments: I love that I can spot the occasional troll post in Equestria Daily comments, and looking below it, it is ignored with more zeal than it could possibly be responded with (the secret weakness of trolls). So please continue to be awesome, bronies.
By the way, am I the only one who wants to see an official Pony Parody of Cowboys from Hell by Pantera? It would attract so many Metalheads to the show.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, I'm just glad they wrote a positive article and didn't compair us to terrorists.
ReplyDelete@Bosstone
ReplyDeleteoh ok Seth your off the hook, good article btw, well written
*Complain complain complain*
ReplyDeleteI remember reading something about you spamming Trixie if we complained. I'm waiting :D
-1 Complaint
ReplyDeleteNow if it was a FlutterFlood...
Eh, forget Trixie. The Derpy header pic is enough. That filled my adorable quotient for the week.
ReplyDeleteOther than the fact that the show isn't brimming with pop culture references and the popularity isn't due to a slightly increase male pony presence, that was a great article.
ReplyDeleteNeeds moar Twixie. First time I've typed it like that and it's at least 20% cooler.
ReplyDeleteShipping, IT COMES FROM HELL
ReplyDelete@Dave Mustang (AKA the clophater)
ReplyDeleteIf someone DOES do cowboys from hell, it would be so sweet!
If I may point evrypony who simply *complains* to http://www.bigcomplaints.com/ ^^ (no ,I am kidding, dont use it!! )
ReplyDeleteSo let me get this straight..
ReplyDeleteYou will fill the entire blog with Trixie for an entire week and all I have to do is complain?
Seth WTF!? Put this in Nightly Roundup!! [insert generic complaint here]
Oh, like you`re not spaming Trixie already...
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who was grinning like a buffoon the whole time reading the article?
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with this.
ReplyDeleteI'm here to complain because I want trixie. There's not enough trixie on EQD
ReplyDeleteWhere exactly is that image of the show from, anyway? It's not a screenshot of episode 2, I checked. It's probably just a promotional image, but what if...it's a screenshot of season 2? A flashback, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteRegardless, most of their expressions bug me.
Does whining get us a full month of Trixie?
ReplyDeleteI wish to file a coup d'etat so we can have 1 year of Trixie.
ReplyDeleteWe don't NEED nice articles about us bronies. We don't need the pathetic people's aproval. WE ARE BRONIES, we don't give a FUCK ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE THINKS. We are a large and consistent fanbase with all kind of pony-based things! WE DON'T NEED THIS!!!!
ReplyDeleteBut thanks for at least search info and make a good review.
Can we have Trixie spam anyways?
ReplyDeleteA The Great and Powerful Trixie spam is not a punishment, The Great and Powerful Trixie would be a reward for pointing out any subtle flaws in the post or just a random bit of generosity to see the greatness and power of The Great and Powerful Trixie!
ReplyDeleteDon't really care about the article by the way, don't care who likes and who doesn't like us. Just felt like expressing a bit of love for one of if not the best pony, in my opinion, who really should make a grand comeback in season 2.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThis is for getting more fans and to stop being looked down at.
@KShrike
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to make that now; I know I want it! Cowboys From Hell is pretty much the most bad a** song ever, so it would of course fit perfectly with our ponies.
notoriety. awesome!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what force encouraged me to write this up at 1:45 AM but so goes this response to complaint demands:
ReplyDeletehttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1B4Zc3t6rPB75XJiuJIwmb1H9EIhVZZpswDx3NMELcRc/edit?hl=en_US
Please don't sue me John Cleese, or Sethisto.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteViolated? Have you seen that picture?! It's adorable! I just want to hug her!
Also, Seth, why wasn't this in Nightly Round-up? Waste of a blog post... Who am I kidding, Trixie please.
that article was awesome >w<
ReplyDelete+1 to the article
+1 to derpy
+1 to trixie spam
+1 to luna still being the best pony
I clicked on this for the adorable Derpy :3

I am NOT complaining; I am WHINING.
ReplyDeleteWait...
You complain, you lose.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeletebecause a week of Trixie is totally worth pretending to complain.
COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN!
A article about the show and bronies that does not paint us as childish and/or crazy while giving reasons why we would love the show, I'm impressed. Its rare that something would give us attention with looking down on us.
ReplyDeleteNow, If you would excuse me, I have to forward this to about 2 dozen friends to prove a point.
Well that didn't take long. What have I been saying all this time?
ReplyDeleteWhy is this article so long?
ReplyDeleteDo I have to read this?
I wanna go home?
This is lame.
Why are there no scratch and sniff stickers?
This is a rip-off.
I demand a refund.
I demand that MLP:FiM be on Rogers on Demand.
Why isn't FiM on Rogers on Demand.
Why is this text box so bland.
I wanna be able to read all the posts at once but I can't.
There should be more free money.
There aren't enough free MLP MMOs on this site.
(More obnoxious complaining.)
Can has Trixie nao?
"At first glance Twilight and her friends might represent female stereotypes (archetypes? role models?)"
ReplyDeleteI prefer the term archetype, and I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with using them.
Complain complain complain complain! Complaining some more! Reference to nazis. More complaining.
ReplyDelete(Because Trixie for a week sounds AWESOME.)
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
ReplyDelete:D
I am so happy about this one.
Wow, Im glad to see that someone not only did the research but actually focused on the good points of the show. Since I wouldnt mind Trixie for a week (youll never find enough good pictures MUHAHAHAHAHA) my complaint shall be that it could only have been better if it was on a big news site.
ReplyDeleteBut hey at least these guys are professional, they even did quite a few interviews.
DON'T COMPLAIN, I HATE TRIXIE!
ReplyDeleteWait, there's a 2001 Monolith reference? Where?
ReplyDeleteYeah, the Monolith thing threw me off. Anypony have links?
ReplyDeleteYou better start Trixie spam now, or I will while for realz.
ReplyDeleteBonus points for mentioning Cats Don't Dance and Princess Promenade.
ReplyDeleteSo sue me if I liked Princess Promenade.
@nemryn
ReplyDeleteJust a guess, but maybe the giant rock from Rarity's cutie mark story? I've never seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, so I don't know how closely it resembles the monolith scene.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYeah, Rarity's rock was a reference to the monolith.
http://cedarlounge.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/2001_space_odyssey_fg2b.jpg
Spam with Trixie anyway.
ReplyDeleteI don't see the guy's problem with the "I'M THE JUGGERNAUT, BITCH!" line. The entire theater erupted at it both times I saw the movie and my friends and I still make fun it. Cars 1 & 2 were also awesome.
ReplyDeleteOh well. I guess actually doing their research and having something positive to say makes up for it.
It surprised me that when he was mentioning pop culture references and he got around to the Diamond Dogs, he made no comment on the Smeagol/Gollum voice the lead Diamond Dog had.
ReplyDeleteSeth I am so sorry! I actually am so engrossed in ponies I am reading articles before you post them now!
ReplyDeleteVery nice article. Though I don't agree with the comment that only the male fans call themselves Bronies. As there are of course many female fans who take on the term as well. Since it couples the words "bro" and "pony" together. And the word bro has been used in the same way "dude" has been. Meaning it can be used for either sex.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a shout out to Derpy Hooves? This pleases Derpy. :)
At my school, (Full Sail University) we get a trade magazine called Animation Magazine and I eagerly await the day they finally do an article on MLP:FiM. They are a very good magazine in terms of bringing to light animation from around the world and I feel they would do an article on par or better than this one. Hell they may even make it a cover story. Either way I want to walk into my school library one day and see the ponies on the cover of that magazine.
ReplyDelete@DavidReinold
ReplyDelete...he made no comment on the Smeagol/Gollum voice the lead Diamond Dog had.
I thought he was doing Grover.
We must send them the muffins of happiness!
ReplyDelete"MLP:FiM is the creation of Lauren Faust, an animation veteran whose career began as an animator on 1990’s features like Cats Don’t Dance and Quest for Camelot. After directing a stack of Powerpuff Girls episodes, Faust hit her stride as Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ head writer and supervising producer. (And in all likelihood, the visual inspiration for Frankie, the show’s red-haired teenage problem-solver.)"
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna complain because Franky wasn't a "teenage problem-solver." She was 22.
THIS ENTIRE ARTICLE IS VOID.
Y'know, I hope FiM continues to be successful without Faust in crew, and Hub recognizes her as being the reason it got off to such a great start. Then maybe they'll pick up Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls. I've wanted to see that be made into a cartoon forever.
ReplyDeleteIf i don't complain . . .. uhm can you spam Trixie anyway O.O
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI see you have learned that a good way to increase self worth is to downplay the majority and give your self undeserved credit!
On topic, It was going to happen any way...[Insert complaint here]
This was a good article. However, I don't know why everybody is hating on NPR. It was WAIT WAIT DON'T TELL ME for crying out loud! It's a COMEDY show! NOBODY is safe on that show--not the subjects, not the contestants, not the panelists, not even Peter Sagal himself! They can AND WILL make fun of pretty much EVERYONE. Can we stop taking ourselves so seriously and laugh at ourselves? Nopony got mad at Pinkie Pie's practical jokes (except Gilda, but she was a douche). Why should WE take personally the fun that WWDTM pokes at EVERYONE?
ReplyDeleteBesides, I'm certain that if Peter ever saw the show he'd love it. XD
A Trixie spam would be GREAT AND POWERFUL!! >:D
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteExcellent article, obviously written by an animation fan, and someone who already "gets" what's fun about MLP:FiM. I just wish it would be seen by more people; AWN.com might not reach a whole lot of people outside of animation fandom.
ReplyDeleteRe: pop culture references:
They're subtle. If you're not familiar with the source inspiration you won't catch them, but you won't be scratching your head wondering what joke you missed either. (Compare that to DreamWorks Animation's too-frequent insertion of an overt pop culture gag which may be funny, but only if you're familiar with the source.)
Rarity's rock did indeed evoke the 2001 monolith.
The presentation of the finished Gala dresses for Hoity Toity also begins with a bit of music evoking the 2001 "Zarathustra" theme.
This was a good article. They obviously did their research and they genuinely like animation and understand the attraction of the show. It is nice to read articles that that give a fair and positive review of the show and paint the Bronies in a positive light.
ReplyDelete
