• Pony RPG Update #3!

So many awesome projects going on right now! This community is insane.

This is the third update for the Pony JRPG that Darth Equus is working on.  It sounds like the team is all built up, and progress on the game is currently under way.

They wanted to toss a teaser out before they enter the inevitable gaming grind mode.  You can find it after the break!

    3. Looking pretty good so far. Keep up the good work.

    4. Was this made with RPG Maker VX? Looks like such.

    5. Wow, this is coming along fantastically.

    6. Silliness aside, I love how this is all coming together. I've never seen houses built quite so well with RPG Maker. Being an avid user of both RMXP and RMVX myself, I know the pain of mapping and programming.

But this is looking beautiful. Can't wait to try it out. Good job, guys, and good luck!

    7. If they have a blacksmith, does that mean there's going to be fighting?

    8. Terry Bogard's Big Shot....

      oddly fitting...

    10. well, dosnt this look interesting. so many quality-looking fan games in production, cant wait till they finish! hopefully within a year? (one can dream)

although i do think they will ultimately finish, unlike some other fan projects i used to follow. this fandom is that amazing.

    11. Wow. I'm liking where this thing is headed, personally! It's an interesting enough concept, and I very much enjoy the idea of having an actual Pony RPG game to play the crap out of. Add the fighter and action/adventure platformer, and we're set for awesome looking game projects with this fandom!

I also love that music. What is it, exactly? It somehow reminds me of Pokemon Colosseum.

    12. Woh, are that actually going to use RPG maker or are they just useing the tile set as a stand in until the get a proper one from their artist?

    13. Looks sweet so far!

    14. Hey everypony!

I'm one of the members of the project, working with Darth Equus. I'm not really going to say anything since I don't want to spoil, but we are working hard and excited to be putting this together!

    15. @OMiY

Hey! You guys are doing a great job so far! May I ask who did the mapping? I'm blown away by the detail.

    16. Hey everypony!

I'm another member of the project. I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say, because I'm not in charge, I don't know everything, and I don't want to slip up and say something that's wrong.

Also, there's still a lot of work that's going into this project, and so we plan on adding a lot of things beyond just what you've seen in the video. Meaning that for all I know, I could say something that's right when I say it and then will get changed somewhere down the line.

That said, from what I've seen so far, I think this game is going to be pretty good. The sprite artist has some ridiculous talent, and I agree that the maps look really well done. I'm the programmer, although I haven't been able to contribute much yet, so nothing I've done showed up in the video. Rest assured, this project is going places!

It's one of the two main battle themes for SNK fighting game brawler, Terry Bogard.

It's called "Big Shot". Normally it's more rock-beat, but this is more than likely based of the version heard in King of Fighters 96.

    18. Sup, OMiY my homie?

Indeed, guys, we are burning the midnight oil on this, and I personally THANK YOU for the words of encouragement.

      To answer your questions:

Yes, it's RPG Maker VX. It makes sense because we can use all the resources available online for it to speed up development.

There will be combat. The main party consists of OC's, but we also want to make AJ, Twilight, Derpy, Zecora, Luna, Celestia, Nightmare Moon, Pinkie Pie and RD playable.

Aaaaand that's all I can reveal for now. Back to the grind with us. Thank you all!

    19. @colt classic

Of course, Ponies have a Blacksmith.

Do you think those shoes just put themselves on?

Wait...that's actually entirely plausible isn't it?

    20. let me go ahead and say that being to move only four directions is not enough. that will get very annoying very fast, and has actually killed it for me for some old school rpg's and other cheap jrpg's

      ReplyDelete
    21. ^ 8 is the way to go

      ReplyDelete
    22. ....So. In the first 30 seconds of the trailer, Apple Bloom has committed first degree murder. Awesome xD

      ReplyDelete
    23. My advice: use indie JRPG Cthulhu Saves the World as a model for what to do in a silly/comedy JRPG such as this. It's extremely well done both as a parody, and as a legitimate JRPG.

      ReplyDelete
    24. Mother of God. I need to play this game.

      ReplyDelete
    25. @Midgard Dragon

This isn't a parody RPG, even though the teasers have a silly nature about them. Although I won't say anything specific, the plot does have a serious conflict and heavy themes at times.

I'm going to report as the Composer for the project. I've also answered some of Darth's questions about the VX engine.

I'm glad everypony is looking forward to it so much!

    26. All of those references to fanfics and various internet memes are so much fun. The game looks good too, though I second the 8-directions of movement (don't know if it's possible though).

      ReplyDelete
    27. @sotha

It is possible, through certain scripts that alter the game's primary engine. However, without sprites to support it (facing up-left, up-right, lower-left, lower-right), it's an awkward script to use.

    28. So after a brief little check with the F3 button, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this:

The screenshot for this news post immediately reminded me of "Story of the Blanks."

      ReplyDelete
    29. @leoshi & @Sotha
There's a script for full pixel-by-pixel movement in 8 directions, which doesn't necessarily need more sprite directions.

Now as far as the game itself goes, it looks good on most parts. Although if they aren't going to make the rest of the graphics (the tilesets, mainly) MLP related I'm not even going to touch the game. I absolutely despise games that use the standard RPG-Maker style tilesets.

    30. Wow, this is looking AWESOME. Great job to everyone involved! :D

      ReplyDelete
    31. Luna becoming Nightmare Moon for Great Justice? I'd expect to see CATS as a boss.

By the way it seems you're doing a great work! Keep it up!

      ReplyDelete
    32. Hello everypony! I am the sprite artist of the project.
I would like to ask you who complain about the directions and graphics to show some consideration.
As awesome as 8-directions and real pony graphics are, RGP maker is very limited and not everypony in the team knows how to work it.
Also, we have been abandoned quite a few times by the original sprite artists that we recruited, I had to pick up where they left of so now I got to do all the main art, and thats more than just making the hair on the pony base sprites. I wont say what that include but you will see that eventually for sure.
Please try to be a bit grateful, we arent making this for profit, we just want to entertain our fellow bronies and pegasis.
Im not saying we wont try to improve things, but please dont demand more than we can do.

To the rest of you, thank you for your support! Its energizing to know you look forward to it!
I assure you, this game is 20% cooler than your average rpg!

The color depth and texture reminds me of the early Suikoden games.

      HOT DAMN

    34. It looks good, you have some skilled pixel artists working on this, but I'm reserving my excitement until I see what the combat is like. There is a lot you can do within the term JRPG so I'm curious to see what you do.

      ReplyDelete
    35. Wow, that looks super amazing! With an interesting and complex plot, it will be great. I'm so looking forward to it! Great job you guys! /L

      ReplyDelete
    36. Youre going to change the stock RPGmaker tilesets later, right?

      ...Right?

      ReplyDelete
    37. I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but I'm going to guess that horseshoes are going to be attack, and saddles are going to be defense, with ribbons and whatnot as accessories, but that's just a guess! xD WHATEVER happens, we're with you all the way! Keep up the amazing work!

    38. @Sakuya

And here's where I admit that this group doesn't have nearly as much communication with each other as we should.

RPG Maker isn't as limited as lots of people assume it is. In fact, it has a lot of potential for almost anything. (I've even seen non-RPGs made with it.)

The problem is that while Pixel-by-pixel movement is possible, yes, to answer a previous question, a grid is generally better to work with, especially when designing puzzles. I've been assuming in my scripts that we're using a traditional grid format, and not pixel-by-pixel.

8-directions can be done, and my work so far (which I can't really talk about, sorry) does have 8-directional support, should that become necessary.

Love how Apple Bloom is becoming the default RPG pony. She's so goshdarned intrepid.

    41. I'd just like to wish you guys good luck, I've actually used the RMXP and VX engine extensively and am an accomplished programmer in the RGSS and RGSS2 ruby based systems. As limited as the systems are they are pretty much perfect for a project like this.
I'm actually a Programmer for the ARC project (if your part of the Rpg maker community you make of heard of it) so my time sheet is pretty full but if your programmer ever needs any extra help feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to lend a hand (even if it is grunt work :P).

my email is [email protected] give me a shout if the need arises.

*blinks in* Wish I had the patience to learn how to use the RPGmaker series (though I'd be willing to pay good money if you designed an idea I've been having for me...)

    47. hey, i just wanted to say that after trying to find out why bronies exist, i think i've become one. i didn't know where to post and i found this, so i would also like to say that this looks awesome.
