• Official My Little Pony Youtube Page Announced on Facebook

Now this is interesting news. There now exists an official My Little Pony channel on Youtube. I checked it, and there's currently nine uploads, which includes some Hub commercials, the Equestria Girls short, some clips from the show, and a Celestia toy commercial.

Depending on the way you slice it, this could either mean that Hasbro and the Hub are fully embracing Youtube and all the benefits it has to offer, including fan offerings, or that they're establishing a legitimate foothold on the site in order to keep pony episodes from being uploaded. Somehow I doubt that it's the latter, considering that the fan-captured episodes online at the moment have been there for months. You think they would have done something about them by now if they found them objectionable.

Fun fact, though- the clips hosted on the official channel are of significantly lower quality than the 1080p offerings we have now. I kind of giggled.

    1. How interesting...also, FIRST! :D

I do wonder what the point of the channel is if they don't plan to upload full episodes though.

    2. Hey any additional means of communication with the Hub I will fully welcome!

    3. Now can someone tell me if the intro they have on there is a new version or an old version I've never heard before. Because AJ and Rarity's voices sound fucked up.

    4. why do they bother with that? they have FULL EPISODES on youtube already. so why bother?

      ReplyDelete
    5. Hmmm. This doesn't seem like enough.

If Hasbro/The Hub had moved fast enough, they could have made money from advertising by uploading the episodes on YouTube themselves. Now, there's no point to that anymore. Most everything they can do there will end up being kind of redundant.

    6. I wouldn't exactly call this excitin, seeing as we already have all the episodes available in much higher quality.

    7. I saw the whole "MLP is now on Youtube" line, and I just wanted to shout, "Well, SOMEpony's late to the party!"

    8. I want behind the scences and interviews GODDAMNIT!!

    9. @Number Six

May be they want a headstart for season 2?

      ReplyDelete
    10. Yeah even though we have the better quality videos, its good to know they're on Youtube. However active they might be.

      ReplyDelete
    11. yeah, maybe a sneak peek at a couple of season 2 clips. that would certainly get more views

      ReplyDelete
    12. This makes sense to me. If they wanted to post/embed YouTube videos in official communications, it would follow that they'd want an official YouTube channel that they have full control over.

Personally, I wouldn't say this is something to be excited over... yet, but that entirely depends on two things: 1) what they intend to do with this channel; and 2) what the significance is that they've even created this channel at all. #1 remains to be seen, obviously (if they use this channel for blatant fanservice, heck yes!), but #2 seems to me to be yet another indication that Hasbro fully appreciates the incredible online community that's formed around MLP:FiM - if their target audience was still just little kids, I don't think they'd have bothered with this, because those kids probably are not going to be spending much time on YouTube.

    13. How long will it take before comments are turned off on the Celestia commercial? :)

      ReplyDelete
    14. I really hope that "about me" section is just Hasbro's lawyers covering their bases and not an indication that DMCA's will start getting thrown around. I figure it's the former seeing as the transformers page has one as well. Still, you never know what the future might hold.

    15. yeah but they could upload the episodes in 1080p, maybe with subtitles and there´s the little posibility of extras like the making of some scenes like we saw the making of the fluttershy scene

so it has pottencial but who knows? U shall keep the eye on it

      ReplyDelete
    16. I actually wouldn't mind if they started taking down full episodes uploaded by other users as long as they uploaded them all in 1080p to their own official channel.

    17. First thought upon seeing the Princess Celestia toy commercial: "Oh god, it talks! Kill it!"

Follow-up thoughts: they need to make a talking Princess Luna doll that says stuff like, "I'm Princess Luna, the OTHER pony princess," and, "Let's take over Equestria, together!"

The night shall last forever...tee hee!

    18. If it's not a prelude to removing episodes (which is doubtful but I guess still possible) then I imagine this being their way of setting up a collection of pony related youtube stuff from a trusted "family friendly" source. An official place for kids and parents to get introduced to the show, without having to be subjected to ponies asking to If You Seek Amy, and to help distance themselves from any videos that they may not be 100% keen on. Seems like a smart idea to me. Even smarter if they use it to give us sneak peeks at the new season and maybe other official pony videos

    19. @Anonymous

I had a similar thought, but I'm pretty sure it's just a stock thing they put up because they have to in order to legally cover their bases and retain the rights to their copyrighted material. I mean they sent Seth a preview of Equestria Girls for heaven's sake, which means that they have to known about all the fan-created content all this time. If they cared, it'd be gone already.

Basically, they make their money off of merch, not the show. All of the stuff on YouTube is tantamount to free advertising for them. It'd be economic suicide to start squelching that, and I'd wager they know that perfectly well.

      ReplyDelete
    20. I really hope they'll post interviews with the creators and show what the production of the new episodes is like and how they create the animation.

      ReplyDelete
    21. That opening is indeed a very old, unfinished version. I saw it while back and was worried Rarity's voice was being changed. But, someone pointed me to a copy on YouTube with a very old upload date which proved it's nothing new and nothing to worry about.

Why they'd upload this unfinished version and not the actual opening, I dunno. Probably just a mistake. After all, remember it was the Hub that uploaded the Giggle at the Ghostie video without noticing the missing music track. I love them but they might need a tiny bit more quality control in the video uploading dept.

Thought the same thing when I listened to it.

Had to double take to make sure my speakers where fucking with me.

      ReplyDelete
    23. I have a feeling it will be the latter though. When those DVDs come out, they'll finally have a way to let people watch the show without watching it on their channel, then they won't need the fan-uploaded videos on youtube.

Don't be upset or surprised when this happens guys. Hasbro is a business, not a charity. They like money as much as everyone else.

      ReplyDelete
    24. you shpuld totally check out the comments on the princess celestia video hopefully they will pay attention to us and make toys more accurate and without those stupid phrases

    26. They should have a bunch of bronies playing with the toys in the commercials instead of the little girls. They would make for more entertaining commercials.

    31. the full episodes will start being taken down now, I hope you all know this.

Discovery Communications and Hasbro are trying to make back $500 million dollars from the channel and this is a huge leaking of revenue.
I have an article with proper sources on derpyhooves.com

      ReplyDelete
    32. The channel isn't terribly interesting right now. Just a bunch of low quality clips and two ads. An official channel has lots of potential, hopefully they'll upload some exclusive content there.

I like how the Celestia toy ad has nothing but negative comments. Maybe they'll actually listen to us and make toys that resemble the show, not ones that pander to the resellers.

      ReplyDelete
    33. Hope that they don't take down any of the youtube content. I don't have cable, so the internet is my only source of ponies. The idea floating around that they just want a trusted place to put their content sounds right to me, as they've embraced the community up to this point, but don't want their target audience finding a reference to a particular Pinkie Pie fanfic. I don't think they'll risk turning off such a large number of fans that buy their stuff over a few episodes.
If it's money they want, all they have to do is make a nice Princess Luna or Trixie, I'm sure plenty of people here want one and aren't very good with customs. (Like me)

    34. If the worst happens, this community is fucked.

Not everyone is American (or Canadian, or wherever this show is aired in English), if they start uploading MLP episodes or other stuff I can almost guarantee you that "this video is not available in your country" is what most of us will see on that page, that would be the start of the downfall of the pony community.

Here's hoping that what I just said doesn't happen. Money can make companies greedy, and just fucking stupid.

Hasbros revenue is up a total of 4 billion, I think they have it covered

      ReplyDelete
    36. @Plaster: Doing so would only serve to harm... at least until they get season DVDs out. Right now Youtube is really the only place you can get archived pony episodes since the Hub's official site doesn't archive them all. For many people, since The Hub isn't included in standard cable packages, Youtube is really the only way to actually watch MLP episodes. That the show was so available to be watched by anyone is what lead to the skyrocketing fanbase.

What they really, and honestly need to do is start tapping into the currently uptapped markets. Bronies have quite a bit of disposable income as a group, but very little pony to spend it on.

Anyway, if Discovery is truly disappointed about viewer numbers on the actual channel itself, they need to nudge cable providers into putting The Hub in default cable packages instead of it being a pricy extra. Not take pony off of youtube. (Because we both know that won't work)

      @Plaster

I doubt they'd be expecting to recoup on The Hub this soon, dude.

A new newspaper or magazine wouldn't expect to even break even for two to three years after launching, and tv channels are incredibly expensive.

They're launching a brand new channel in a market with some seriously established players, Disney etc, so I doubt they'd be expecting to get any cash back off it for a while yet.

I'm looking forward to checking your article though.

    38. So....season 2 trailer please Hasbro?

      ReplyDelete
    39. @Milleniummaster18

Between Equestria Girls and Bridlemaids, it's clear that the adult audience is something that Hasbro recognizes and values to the extent of spending money to cater that group. They're not going to spend good money acknowledging and attracting those demographics and then immediately thereafter do something that antagonizes and drives them away. Of course companies like money, but if Hasbro did what some are suggesting they might do, they'd almost guaranteed to be costing themselves money in doing so, and every indication says that they are well aware of that.

I'll believe the worst that doomsday prophets are conjuring when I see it; until that time arrives I'm confident that Hasbro is not stupid and recognizes that everything that's happened so far is in their own economic benefit. It doesn't hurt the internet to be optimistic once in a while. :P

      ReplyDelete
    40. It's a start I guess. I just get the nagging feeling they're not fully engaged because this is a "kids show".

If they put some more energy into their social networking and quality into the toys the show could be much more profitable for them.

      ReplyDelete
    41. I posted the next paragraph about the pink Celestia toy on the video. Maybe someone would actually like to write this fanfic. You're welcome to it. Just do me a favor, somehow put in the lines "My wings are so pretty." and "Let's fly to the castle." Heh heh

"Guys, this is Celestia before the battle with and banishment of Princess Luna. Facing that hard decision and its effects and taking on the responsibly of both day and night Celestia grew as a perso-- er, pony. She realized what a selfish and vain per-- pony she'd been and how that may have, in a small way, pushed Luna towards becoming Nightmare Moon. After this, she became the loving, kinda and selfless Celestia we all know. Hair went white too, I guess. Now someone write the fanfic."

    43. That Princess Celestia commercial made me sick. Get it together Hasbro.

      ReplyDelete
    44. It's quite laughable when the fan-base makes higher quality products then the company that owns the subject.

The intro clips an old unfinished version that only plays in one ear, and not to mention that youtube background haling to the architectural stylings of MC Escher

      ReplyDelete
    45. HUB! HASBRO!

You can make a sizeable amount of cash by becoming a YouTube partner, uploading the episodes, and harvesting the advertisement money.

You can make it so all episodes uploaded by all users are also ticked with ads the profit from which also ends in your pocket.

      You're welcome.

      ReplyDelete
    50. I doubt they're doing this with some ulterior motive.

      a) they like us
      b) they seem to realize none of us get hub
      c) its way too widespread to just go make some copyright complaints.

That being said, I've had the episodes saved for awhile and its staying that way.

But yeah, I find it really cool that they're making an effort to acknowledge/reach out to/include us once again.

    53. I wouldn't get to worried if they decide to remove the episodes from youtube.

It'll be a dick move for sure, but there will be other ways to watch the episodes. They'll get uploaded to rapidshare, megaupload and co and somepony will make a torrent out of them. Heck, there's even a torrent out for season1.

They'll just antagonize a huge part of their fanbase, biting the hand that feeds them, in the process.

      ReplyDelete
    54. Honestly, we all should start worrying about the episode uploads on Youtube when the DVD/Blurays are released.

    55. Time to go on a youtube downloading spree.

      ReplyDelete
    56. Hah. I get the feeling that Hasbro doesn't quite know what to do with their new fanbase. Bronies aren't really like transformers fans, we're closer to the Avatar fandom at this point.

I've got faith they'll get it together by the end of Season 2, though. Maybe bring some people in who're accustomed to the whole fan circuit.
