• Jacob Minkoff, Lead Game Designer at Naughty Dog, Is a Brony!

Before this pony craze sapped all my free time, I spent many an hour with my PS3 and 360, playing pretty much everything, usually good old fashioned "pass-off on death" 2 player style with a RL friend.  This one in particular sticks out for me, mainly because that type of gaming worked ridiculously well when watching someone else play was almost like watching a movie.

But this isn't about me!  This is about the Lead Designer behind the Uncharted series posting a whole bunch of pony on his blog, with all sorts of shout-outs to the hard workers over at Hasbro's various studios.  Someone at his level in the entertainment industry can definitely attest to what the people busting out our favorite pony cartoon are going through right now, trying to make sure season two is just as amazing as the first.

I'll stop rambling though! You can find his blog here!

    7. YEESSSSS!!

This guy gets it. What makes Friendship is Magic great isn't that it's some visionary example of modern storytelling, it's that it's simply enjoyable. It's fun to watch. It doesn't have to be, but it is.

    8. Jacob Minkoff should add a lil something easter egg in U3 for all of us bronies and uncharted to know what we've been accoplished to ND and Jacob to what have made him become 20% cooler...

      VastaKustuta
    9. Now remane it to Naughty Pony, and then you may kiss the bride

      VastaKustuta
    10. @ULTRAMARIOXI accidentally remane instead of rename, my inner brony knows more than I do

      VastaKustuta
    11. Now I remember why I've always respected Naughty Dog as one of the most talented dev's in the industry...

    15. It is news like this that really boosts my morale and renew my passion for this fandom. It's ever so nice to see FiM being depicted in such positive light by someone of prominence in the gaming industry. Though to be honest I'd be happy even if he ISN'T a high profile game producer, that article was a good read, and a good reminder of why I love this show so.

    17. A top game designer wants moar Luna. That is one of the most ludacris things I have ever read in my life, and god damnit it's epic

      VastaKustuta
    18. This makes me happy and giddy inside. :D

      VastaKustuta
    19. Well, if there is a Pony Easter Egg in Uncharted 3. That will certainly be something to keep an eye out for.

I've been with Naughty Dog since the original Crash Games. To know they are still making quality products after all this time makes me feel good as well. Espicially since there games can often be described the same way. All they had to do was make a simple game to become mascots of the latest console, be it platformer or shooter. Except they go above and beyond and make it more than that.

(And funnily enough, watching the Jak series, you can see the moment when shooters became more popular than platformers.)

      VastaKustuta
    20. Now see, this is someone who gets it. great entertainment isn't about being new and original, though it certainly don't hurt. Great entertainment takes a solid concept and instead of just trying to make it work making it excel.

When I create something I often start with something that has already been done. but while i make it I challenge myself to make it better than anything before it. often I have to learn something new in order to accomplish my vision but I never give anything less than my best. anything less would be an insult to myself and to the art.

Art is about elevating things to their highest point so that they can be admired. to make true art you can't compromise on your vision. that doesn't mean that there is no revision involved but that the core of the project stays the same.

      VastaKustuta
    21. he summed it up better than anyone ever could

      VastaKustuta
    22. A powerfully written blog post, one that is singing to the choir that gets to it from here, but still worth the time to take in and marvel at. Mr. Minkoff's words are wonderfully crafted, just like the games he has helped designed. No coincidence at all, having played and loved Uncharted 2 to death. To have found out that Mr. Minkoff is a fellow brony just made my month.

      VastaKustuta
    23. Great blog post, and I agree with him about more Luna.

      VastaKustuta
    24. Naughty Dog? As in... CRASH BANDICOOT?

      ...

      *puts on sunglasses*

      YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

      VastaKustuta
    25. HOLY CRAP Just a few hours ago I got a hankerin' for some Uncharted 2, so I popped it in for the first time in months... and then suddenly THIS!

I didn't think it was possible for me to love Naughty Dog even more!

      VastaKustuta
    26. I haven't played a Naughty Dog game since Crash Bandicoot, but I'm considering robbing one of my friends PS3 and playing all the Uncharted games after see this. A nice article anyway, with what has to be one of the clearest explanation to why this fandom fell in love with the show.

      VastaKustuta
    27. Time to go buy everything he's ever helped on ever. I sure hope he gets money from it.

      VastaKustuta
    28. Just another attention whore.

    30. I want to see an episode with Nolan North as a pony. I don't care if he's in Nate mode or Deadpool mode, I just want that episode.

      VastaKustuta
    31. Naughty Dog is also responsible for at least the first three Jak & Daxter games, which were some of the best platform-style games I have ever played; especially Jak 2. Not to mention they had fantastic visuals (that I might add were also fairly cartoony but nonetheless worked famously) and great stories.

The two parts of his blog entry that I absolutely love are these:

      1) All it had to do was be pink and sell toys. Instead, it dares to not talk down to its audience.

      2) Are there better stories out there? Yeah, sure. But there’s nothing that had less business being good.

      VastaKustuta
    32. Yay, my Uncharted ponies are on the front page! :) I guess I should have submitted this when Mr. Minkoff first posted it. He also sent out a few tweets about how much he loved my drawing and ponies in general. Naughty Dog got 20% cooler, as if they needed to. :D

      VastaKustuta
    33. Naughty Dog, the developers of Uncharted, previously made Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter games. Naughty Dog works closely with Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch. Insomniac Games, the developers of Resistance, previously made Spyro and Ratchet and Clank. And Sucker Punch, the developers of Infamous, previously made Sly Cooper games.

All these game developers have their roots in friendlier (and furrier) all-ages games.

      VastaKustuta
    34. Most important part: "(moar Luna plz)."

      VastaKustuta
    35. But with a little sex in it.

      VastaKustuta
    36. I didn't need a reason not to rush and buy Uncharted3. Now I have the best reason to go and buy this game AS FAST AS I CAN!

      VastaKustuta
    37. I hope I'm not the only one who saw Naughty Dog and instantly went 'oh, the people who made the old Crash Bandicoot games like pony. Awesome.'

      Because those games were brilliant

    39. Well to tell the truth, I believe naughty dog is doing something pretty similar to their games. They take an idea that may or may not have been thought of, then innovate every single detail of it and add in what we want in a game and not some stereotypiccal video game atmosphere that we are starting to get from franchises as large as call of duty, medal of honor, and many others.

And this... well now they have reason to be the best developers out there, because not only do they think outside the box in gaming, but also they think outside the box in art as a whole.

      VastaKustuta
    40. He wants moar Luna?! He can't handle moar Luna!!

Funny thing: I just recently started on playing Uncharted 1, played a little UC3 multiplayer beta on PSN, and bought UC2 a week ago (which have yet to feel the inside of my PS3)... All in preparation for UC3's November release. Also, Crash Team Racing is one of my favorite PS1 games ever (actually the first PS1 game I bought with my own money, 12 years ago).

Are ponies really the glue that shall bind us all?

      VastaKustuta
    41. I think he hit the nail on the head. MLP isn't the best cartoon ever by itself. But for what it is, and what people expect of it, it's pretty dang amazing.

      VastaKustuta
    42. That was an amazingly well written description of FiM. Maybe it's what I need to warm up my friend who is a big uncharted fan, but hasn't really given ponies much of a chance. Although, to be honest, seeing a major game developer call for more Luna just like the rest of us was all it took to make my day, and I'd only been up 10 minutes when I first saw this on my iPod. (I would have commented then, but hooves on a touchscreen are even more difficult than on a keyboard.)

      VastaKustuta
    43. MLP:FiM reference in Uncharted 3.

      Calling it now!

      VastaKustuta
    44. @colt classic

Not sure, maybe Lemmy from Motorhead?

If he admitted he was a brony, I would fall on my face and thank god.

      VastaKustuta
    45. At least two people from Bohemia Interactive reporting in :D

      VastaKustuta
    46. inb4 immature 12 year old PS3 fanboys rage about him being a brony all over Youtube, etc.

      VastaKustuta
    47. Haha this is sweet

      VastaKustuta
    48. ...I...Oh my gosh!

The Uncharted series is probably on my list of favorite series, right behind LBP... and this?

      I already was pre-ordering UC3... but THIS?

Naughty Dog, you have a customer, for LIFE

      VastaKustuta
    49. I WANT NEW CRASH BANDICOOT GAME PLZ!

      VastaKustuta
    50. @kirbycolours
Exactly what I thought, actually. I thought Naughty Dog went bankrupt a while back, seeing as I hadn't heard from them since then. Good to see they're in good hooves.

      VastaKustuta
    51. An amazingly insightful and perfectly written blog post! :D

    53. The day they no longer owned Crash
And the day Insomniac no longer owned Spyro
It was a sad day for gamers.

    56. I now want Uncharted 3.

      VastaKustuta
    57. Minkoff gets it. I'm going to show this to my friends who are not Bronies yet.

      VastaKustuta
    58. +1 more for the brony generation!

not to mention that the Uncharted series is easily the best game ever

      VastaKustuta
    59. my day has just been made. :D

      VastaKustuta
    60. Almost three months later, and this is still perhaps one of the best critiques on the subject of ponies out there.

It's moderate, benevolent in its message without being gushing, gives specific reasons, and perhaps has the best insight into what makes the show so much more notable than what's around it. I push it wherever I can because it's the one article I can spread around that doesn't seem too subjective (other than maybe the fair "B+"-grade review given by AV Club).

      VastaKustuta
    61. Here's hoping for a pony reference in Uncharted 3!
