For those dying for some 3D online pony, this game hopes to satisfy those urges. The developers over at the Equestria Online site are hard at work trying to literally create Equestria. It's a pretty big testament to how awesome this community is just to see this kind of progress.
An MMORPG is extremely complex and time consuming to put together, especially when it's something they don't even have the license for.
They also have a demo zip file you can download to mess around with in the video description.
You can find it after the break!

First, and wow
ReplyDeleteWhoa. This looks incredible for a free game.
ReplyDelete...and kinda limited space-wise for an MMO, something tells me this is going to be largely populated. xP
(I mean, it's already lagging a bit at the start without even connecting to HUNDREDS of other bronies. I know this is no easy thing to accomplish, but that's something I want to see fixed before release if possible, if at least just toned down.)
Other than that, amazing. Simply amazing.

Im on my phone atm... FFS.

Cool beans, bro
ReplyDeleteBUCK! One of these pony MMO's needs to get done now! I can't wait any longer to wander Ponyville with other bronies.
ReplyDeletenice, very nice.
ReplyDeleteAwesome.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Dem sounds.
This is full of win. So full Charlie Sheen says "Dayum!"
ReplyDeleteWow. When they finish it... Let's just say I don't think the server will be able to keep up with number of bronies, because this looks AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteDO WANT!
ReplyDeleteDO WANT SO BADLY!
Hell yes. -oozes with excitement---~
ReplyDeleteWow!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to play!!! :D
This looks pretty cool, although I wonder, when the actual game comes out, who is ever going to choose to be an Earth pony?
ReplyDeleteAlso, apparently you need unity to play the demo. I did not know.
ReplyDeletehey, I'm the unity developer for this, I also put the video together. I'm happy to see everyone's liking this
ReplyDelete@Setzertrancer I would. Why wouldn't I?
ReplyDeleteWANT
ReplyDeleteALL MY MONEY TAKE IT NOW :D
Oh wow! This is looking amazing! I'm really looking forward to being able to play this and wonder Equestria with all sorts of ponyfolk!
ReplyDeleteThese ponies are doing a great job, keep it up!
please tell me the animations are still rough, because the walking cycle looks a bit bland
ReplyDeleteIf only Hasbro wasn't likely to X this asap...
ReplyDeleteDon't worry people. When it comes to the server part, we will do our best to first of all make it invite only when the time comes (to iron out bugs and actually check the server handling).
ReplyDelete@Setzertrancer
ReplyDeleteHm if this was a combat oriented mmo (which I think I heard it was not) An earth pony might be suited to be the equilent of a tank (someone who soaks up damage to keep aggro from the squishy wizards and other people who need protecting)
as a social mmo I guess it would be a stylistic choice, or something to resemble an charecter for an rp
Cease speaking and accept my relinquished currency!
ReplyDeleteDo they really have the budget to do this (budget includes time, AKA man hours).
ReplyDeleteCan Hasbro team with Bioware on this? ;-) The heck with The Old Republic. I want this!
I spend three days in the character customization screen alone.
I'm rather amused to see that this is being done in the Unity engine, while at the same time, I'm taking a class in Unity 3. Looking pretty good so far!
ReplyDelete@Sukotto Dude, its a demo. of course it's rough.
ReplyDeleteSemper fidele, brony. You have my sword!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Intriguing choice of engine by the way. For those unaware of Unity, it's free for anybody to develop free products with, can produce excellent graphics, and games can be ported to stand-alone, browser, and smart phone clients. Not entirely sure how it performs in the multiplayer realm, but definitely a good choice for large, open, detailed worlds. Can't wait to see how this turns out in the end.
ReplyDeleteAs an example of how well Unity performs (and how cool this project could turn out), here's one of my favorite demos from the corporation: http://unity3d.com/gallery/live-demos/index.html#tropical-paradise
Fedelis*
ReplyDeleteThese guys really need to stop releasing every little bit of media they produce, it's getting a bit stupid. Releasing alpha footage that looks atrocious is just going to lose them respect.
ReplyDeleteThey need a PR guy.
@Fire Flash
ReplyDeleteYou mean fidelis ;)
(Suddenly I am reminded of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbI-fDzUJXI)
why u mane no bounce when you trot????? and tail lol i keed looks amazing
ReplyDeleteLiek this game is so stupid i could make a better game like cod and this is made in unity what kind of stupid thing is that this is so stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf and when this comes out, I will be playing it.
ReplyDeleteMusic sounds like something out of Dark Cloud.
ReplyDelete@princebluehoof is the best
ReplyDeleteimplying that cod is a good game?
Dark Cloud anon here again, I'm totally on to something. That bg music was totes inspired by the Norune village theme.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HANiaOlXdqQ&feature=related
Fuck, I want to play Dark Cloud now... GOOD THING I TOTALLY CAN PLAY IT IN 720P ON MAH EMULATOOOOOOR.
I'll probably get through the first dungeon and then get bored. :(
@Moof
ReplyDeleteCod is the manliest game in the world have fun with youre stupid game!!!!!
@princebluehoof is the best
ReplyDeletemanly? I think you mean mindless. I can play veterinary without even trying, there's no challenge or thought to it. boring repetitive shooting. its not even a game, its a "hold the shoot button to win."
if you want something that is actually a challenge, or your so called "manliness" why don't you play a game that takes some actualy thought, like resident evil 1, or ninja Gaiden or Prince of Persia!
@princebluehoof
ReplyDeleteYour troll is showing :( Anyway, I think this looks fantastic and I can't wait to play it!
@princebluehoof is the best
ReplyDelete@princebluehoof is the best You stop trolling, and you, @Moof stop arguing whith the troll, its like feeding the animals at a zoo
@princebluehoof
ReplyDeleteObvious troll is obvious.
On topic: For a rough demo this is already looking good. I'll be interested to see how it ends up.
Not that I don't like.. it just needs to be about 20% cooler. I do like it though keep up the good work!
ReplyDeletebut its fun to argue
ReplyDelete@scottishbrony Im not trolling this is just so stupid i cant belief you like somthing like this you must be a idiot or somting to like this and not cod lol
ReplyDelete@princebluehoof is the best Troll is Trolly.
ReplyDeleteAnd Moof! Arguing with the troll just encourages him! Stop it!
exactly, by encouraging a troll I can consistently argue with him and have more fun
ReplyDelete@princebluehoof is the best
ReplyDeleteWell, youre trolling, several factors, for one, your name, for another, praising cod. read also: Hating on a fanmade MLP game on ED
way to go captain state the obvious
ReplyDelete@Moof
ReplyDeleteWell, have fun somewhere else with the trolls, the arguing is clogging up our praise section.
wtf are you trying to act like youre better than me this game is so stupid and theres nothing good about it besides the ponys and what about my name?!?!?!!?
ReplyDelete@princebluehoof is the best
ReplyDeleteIf its so stupid, dont post about it here. and praising blueblood is a troll moove
Eh, I'm not going to compare this to a professionally done game with a good budget. That would be silly. lol But for something fan-made, it's looking decent so far. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeletePerson who made the song, here.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was inspired by Norune Village. I love that song to death. Hopefully it's not a carbon copy, if anything. May have to change it up if it's too close.
isnt this actually "equestria chronicles online" or are there two free to play pony related mmos going on ???
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteEquestria Chronicles was shut down because of life getting in the way, whatever that is...
I'm not all that fond of MMOs but I'd try it just for the ponies.
ReplyDeleteWow, this could be what brings me back into MMOs. Just curious, will there be any customization & to what level (colours/mane/apparel possibly?)
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous-7 p.m.
ReplyDeleteNo, this is not Equestria Chronicles Online.
Its http://www.equestriaonline.com/
@Tentaquil (TV) Its all on the site EquestriaOnline.com
ReplyDelete@Tentaquil (TV)
ReplyDeleteyes, there's going to be tons of customization available
alright this is looking great. it just needs to be 20% cooler, my opinion would be more trees and buildings, plus hair movement when walking, but other than that pretty badass.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteDemo..Its a Demo
Why are we comparing FPS to adventure RPG anyway? It's like comparing apples and octopi (+1 internet to whoever gets that one.) @Moof, Arguments are fun, but only with people who have valid points and not opinions. -Sapphie
ReplyDeleteNeeds wOrk on the walk cycle, it's not in time with the stepping sound effects and it looks more like he's skating on the ground. Other than that, surprisingly top-notch.
ReplyDeleteRemember everypony, don't feed the parasprites. The best way to deal with them is to recognise what they are and then totally ignore them.
ReplyDeleteBack on topic, my two criticisms are the sky (which is too earth-like, though I'm not sure if you can apply the more artsy-looking clouds from the show) and the I would like to see the character moving model bob as they move along like a proper pony trotting.
I, for one, am really quite excited for the potential this has. Assuming Hasbro doesn't nix it first chance they get, the developers could release the game with maybe Ponyville and Canterlot, with different quests and items and all that good stuff, and then later they could release updates with Cloudsdale, Manehattan, Fillydelphia, Appleloosa, Stalliongrad, etc...
ReplyDeleteBut that's just one brony's dreams...
They even had a Scootaloo fountain!
ReplyDelete@Hirosashii
ReplyDeleteNah it's cool. I like it.
As someone who has a bit a experience with the unity game engine and 3d model making I felt compelled to comment
ReplyDeleteI haffta say that this game is turning out amazingly, the 3d-models are excellent, the sounds effect (when sync'd up with a running animation) sound awesome, and the part where the banner actually moved when he walked under it was impressive because I've played funded compny made rpg's that don't do that so it's a nice little detail they took the time to put it, also i hope to see an transition animation for walk to turning to walking straight again that would make the basic character movement perfect. The environment look wonderful and I know since it's a WIP they'll add more to it to make it look more busy. Hmmm what else to say...? I saw an hp bar there so I hoping we can see in the next demo is there is going to be fighting or something that would make an hp bar relevent. In conclusion this fan made mmo looks like the best thing I've seen in pony based games EVAR. These guys put a lot of work and dedication to this and would LOVE to see the final product
Guys, it's only in it's demo stage and people sometime asks us to give footage. We're at least trying, jeez. :\
ReplyDeleteAWSHITFUCK it's gonna be 3D?
ReplyDeletei hope the camera will be adjustable so the player can play with perfect centered if they choose to
ReplyDeleteFUCK YES.... this will replace Minecraft as my game of choice
ReplyDeleteI feel that this is an amazing idea! But I have twinge in my brain saying this might horribly backfire somehow!
ReplyDeleteFORGET LOTRO!!! I WANNA PLAY THIS!
ReplyDeleteTHE MONEY, THEY DO NOTHING.
ReplyDeleteIf this comes to pass, I fear for my GPA
ReplyDelete@Paul
ReplyDeletewell we actually can move the camera around, but I didn't show it because it still needs work
You know, this made me want to play it instantly because of the hooves on pavement. It is honestly one of my most favorite sounds in the world.
ReplyDeleteSweet Celestia Have Mercy
ReplyDeleteDid anyone save the dl link from vid? They removed it D:
ReplyDeleteQuick! Someone hijack Furcadia and turn it into all ponies! Or reinvent Inherit the Earth...into all ponies!!!
ReplyDeleteI am so totally dating myself right now.
Yeah, you are going to have to build a Canterlot, Manehattan, etc. eventually. Ponyville just won't be big enough to handle all the players assuming it gets as popular as anything else Pony.
ReplyDeleteWith how good a job some modelers have been doing recreating Ponyville structures, I don't think you'll have much problem finding folks who want to make Everfree fora or some simple Manehatten skyscrapers to fill out the landscape.
Makes me wish I started learning Maya a few years ago!
Also, any plans on how to reduce the strain on the server(s)?
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI put it back in the video just now.
but here's the direct link to save you some time
http://www.equestriaonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Jully_28.7z
@Anonymous above Moof, we are planning on having Ponyville, Cloudsdale, and Canterlot be the main starting areas, and hub towns. And people who think there isn't anything good about earth ponies, they get to start in Ponyville. so that's one thing.
ReplyDeleteMy body is ready for this.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who missed FlyFF when I saw this?
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, dev bronies! I sincerely wish that you finish this. Once this is done, this shall be a great undertaking in the history of the Herd that shall never be forgotten even if it goes offline.
I tried that downloadable stuff and i have to say, there're funny things in this even if its pre-pre-alfa or something
ReplyDeleteI'd love to help with creating this but my computing knowledge is only c and c++ thus far...
But, if you want, i can lend you my imagination for free :D
I have to say, this is looking really good. I'm glad you chose to work in Unity. The character models are coming along nicely. The physics with the banner interactions are a nice touch. The buildings in the town are looking positively Ponyvillian.
ReplyDeleteI must ask though. I saw for some game-developing group some time back that they developed a pretty comprehensive map of Ponyville. Will you be using similar to make sure it feels right with the show?
And about Earth ponies, I imagine they will have some huge bonuses in whatever equivalent of strength/dexterity and health. Remember that all three types of ponies have innate magic. Pegasi can fly, walk on clouds, manipulate weather. Unicorns can directly channel the magical energies through their horns. And earth ponies can, um, do something. I'm sure whatever you guys come up with will be unique and balanced and interesting enough for plenty of players to want to be earth ponies.
@sotha
ReplyDeleteWhen it gets to 'Earth pony special powers' I always think about the episode Feeling Pinkie Keen.
@devponies
I just found out that this Unity is totally free, so I got it. I hope I can get used to it lickety split, and then join You in the making of this amazing game.
The graphics and animations still look rough, but with a bit more work it would be better than SecondLife which has a fairly good following of pony.. but rought with drama.
ReplyDeleteThis would be awsome and the drama will be put to a minimum.
Wow. :)
ReplyDeleteEarth pony: tank
ReplyDeleteUnicorn: healer/caster dps
Pegasus: melee/ranged dps
Celestia & Luna: faction leaders
Though to be honest I can't see a pony MMO being as combat-oriented as WoW, or even the factions being violently hostile to one another. Maybe Celestia and Luna draw in ponies to their respective factions to seek out Magical MacGuffin Of The Week so it's more in the nature of friendly competition than outright war. Opposing faction NPCs would say "Sorry, I won't sell equipment to you because you're working for Celestia/Luna. Try my counterpart across town."
it looks like...a bit good....but we need LOTS AND LOTS of space
ReplyDeleteNEED SO FUCKING BAD!
ReplyDeleteit seems like having the grass cut into the paths would look better than photoshop-eraser blending in. Plants dont grow by themselves, after all.
ReplyDeleteAnd the animations do need touch ups... cant wait for the customization features though.
video's not there anymore
ReplyDelete
