Time for you guys to be a test audience again. If you're getting sick of this... well, actually, I still wouldn't stop even if you said yes. You secretly like it and I know it.
So far, the blog as a whole has carved out a niche in the community by hosting several types of content. We have original fan fiction, original and show-derivative fan videos, and fan-made music. So far, however, there has been very little blog-specific content being showcased. Actually, almost none at all.
We'd like to change that. But first, we'd like some opinions.
Phoe and I are ready to begin regular columns focusing on whatever topics that you guys would like to read about. The problem doesn't lie with finding ideas- I can and do rant about whatever I want to for paragraphs at a time, and Phoe is much better at it than I am, just more reserved. No, the trouble is that we don't know what you guys want to read!
So, have at it. Throw out some ideas for us. We'd like to get a good feel for the general needs of our readers before we start making these things. Titles, too. Titles would be nice. I'm terrible at titles.

ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I'd love to read about creative crafts and stuff that the fans are doing. The 3D models? So cool. The plushies? 20% cooler. I wanna see neat costumes and read about how to make the bits and pieces that go together to make them.
I think it would be neat to feature a member of the fandom each week. This is such a talented community! Everyone from heads of fan projects, event hosts, awesome blog heads, customizers, fanartists, fanficiton authors... The possibilities are endless.

In my opinion there shouldn't be such a overreaction each time the media portrays bronies in a negative light not to mention there was unnecessary backlash for articles that were purely satire in nature. People gotta learn laugh at themselves

Theres also the concept of character clubs and having weekly co petitions based on that (i.e make a specific character known the best way possible like the pinky billboard) However I can easily see this getting out of hand in so many ways

Like, take some good new fanart, or controversial or popular subject, or story, or event, or something Lauren Faust said, or whatever, and just have a good few paragraphs of your own personal thought on that -- a few for Phoe and a few for Cereal, maybe, or something. I dunno. Or you could each do that once per week, say Cereal's on Wednesday and Phoe's on Saturday or something so it's spread out.

ReplyDeleteHm... Original stuff for EqD? Coming up with new stuff is never easy :s The NATG was a nice little thing-a-ma-jig, but I dunno if Phoe would want to do that "regularly". Maybe something similar done every other/three/four day(s) called "Phoe's Minions'" or something like that (If Phoe handles it, of course). Since it wouldn't be daily, Phoe would probably get the sleep needed to continue living, and the artists would have more time to bust out some of that awesome stuff they do (I'm jelly). As for fanfics, well, those are hosted here anyway, not much that could be done for them except maybe a themed fanfic thingy similar to Phoe's Minions', but as you said, Seth, we're "full of words". I imagine reading all of those would get tiresome... A word limit, perhaps? But that would stifle creativity... Or encourage it... So many possibilities! Meh, it could be called "Scribbles".

ReplyDeleteSrsly tho, you could take steps to more fully engage the fanfic demographic, and here's why you should; they may not be the largest portion of the community, but they (and the artists) are certainly the most active. So doing review discussions, voice chat authors night, something along those lines.
I'd prefer if the blog stayed more or less a content archive with occasional ramblings mid-post. Once the blog starts blogging for the sake of blogging then it risks failing to fill the niche it currently fills. Enough people are already butthurt about this site for various reasons as it is.

ReplyDeleteI love finding out that new merchandise is available and where to find it! I think this could become a bigger part of the site as (hopefully) Hasbro begins pushing the merch a bit more heavily this fall.

ReplyDeletei have to agree with this. interviewing some of the rising stars that make this fandom what it is today would be very interesting (to me at least). i know some of the pony-centric podcast's already cover this in terms of interviews with the occasional author or PMV artist, but there's still a ton of creative bronies out there that could use a little more recognition for there awesome work.
Articles on the fanon of background/incidental characters could be fairly interesting.

ReplyDelete2. Episode discussion/commentary. What parts of an episode were great, elwhat parts could they improve? Also your guys thoughts on some of the little moments that really define the characters for you.
3. Random musings. Not that often, but I imagine that every once in a while, an article on something random could be quite interesting.
What about doing interviews with fans who have created some of the more notable fan stuff? Just to ask them how they got into the fandom, how they got into the particular section of fan work that they do etc etc.

The great thing about this is it's a hub for artistry of several kinds. I agree we shouldn't clutter it.

ReplyDeleteGood Fanfictions are pushed when they're updated, I can grab my daily Fanart from the Drawfriend-stuff instead of looking at ponybooru every 20 minutes, there's a comic sometimes and regular pmvs.

I'm sure I'd also love to see discussions or articles about things you guys have particularly enjoyed, or that you've done recently. It's always nice to know your staff members on a personal level, I think.
Lastly, I'd just like to see some articles about writing--writing better, writing specific genres, etc. I'm sure Cereal would be willing to oblige.
Yeah, I'm a biased fic writer, but that's what I'd liked to see. But, of course, making sure not to be cluttered is key.

Outside of this site I only really do youtube related stuff and been working more then normal on drawing... I even started my own Deviantart page for the heck of it heh but other then that I wouldn't really know what to mention.
I'd kinda like to see tutorials on how to do the characters in the style of the show. We have drawing guides, sure, but how does one depict them in vectors similar to the actual show?

ReplyDeleteI know it might seem hard, but so far the response from the production staff regarding interviews and Q&As have been really positive. Lauren Faust responds to (some) questions on DA, Daniel Ingram seems very open as well. I think you should try and get more Q&As
This might seems a little redundant, since almost the entire internet does it, but a fun podcast of some pseudo-RP (like being hosted by Trixie, for example) that could also double serve as a weekly wrap up could work as well.
Bringing in more discussions and ideas from Ponychan would help bring the herd even closer.
Streaming events, like live reading of fanfics, live discussion of episodes could be nice as well.
but overall, it's nice to see that this website is always planning on growing!

On a related note, i would be interested in articles delving in to how the fandom have interpreted and expanded on the characters personality / history / and to a lesser extent there connection to each other, be it genetics / personal / or even conflict.
Maybe one for each canon pony of note "who ever thought Derpy would become canon?".
Also Luna is the best pony. Going to be so sad when season 2 crushes all my preconceived notions.
I would like to see an interview with the people responsible for Pinkie Pie's "poing!", and that cute little squeaky toy noise Twilight Sparkle makes after her safe landing, and Pinkie Pie makes after explaining her promise to Twilight Sparkle, and for the fainting goat bleat we hear at the end of Dragonshy from both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. The sound design is part of what makes this show so awesome! From looking at the credits, that would probably be AFX Artists Ben Galewitz and Jason Ross Belyea.
ReplyDeleteOne other thing - when interviewing production staff, I would be interested in reading about how they prepared themselves for the work they are doing now. Where did they go to school, for example? What did they study? Who were their major inspirations or influences?

There are a lot of topics about Equestria that could be discussed; just to list a few which crossed my mind - The role of cutie marks in their society, Alicorns and their possible origins, Whether or not Celestia is a deity... There's a lot of shit like that that could be touched on.
I'd like some meta-articles that reviews genres of fanfics. Normal, Shipping, Grimdark etc. Probably "Best Of" with a little commentary, explaining why this particular fic is good. Dunno.

Maybe have a 'Fan Suggestions' sort of thing, where you take the ideas of fans that you like and compile them in a post every once in a while (since you guys could amplify their voice to all the other pony fans). That, or a 'Letters to the Editor' sort of deal, where we can send stuff directly to you guys and you talk about it (heck, Derpy can even deliver the mail :D).

ReplyDeleteI like the idea of more "training ground" style articles, especially if they would cover other creative subjects. One of the best parts about this fandom is the large number of creative people in it, and anything that offers the opportunity to expand or improve on those skills would undoubtedly be beneficial and fun to try.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be cool if, perhaps once a week, you did a character spotlight featuring the best of the best fanfics, art, and music based on a certain character. Of course, you'll have to make an order list and stick to it, so that us Twilight Sparkle lovers don't have to sit through 5 spotlights in a row featuring Trixie.
ReplyDelete--Less fanfics...90% of this place is fanfics, gets old after a while...I suggest making a list of fanfics and people can just follow them on their own free will.

--Have your authors stop being vocal on which pony is better...really...when was the last time Fluttershy was on a header of an article? Its always Luna, Rainbow Dash or Trixie(I mean really, she was on one episode...shes NOT a main character)
--Be a bit stricter on "Firsts" posts...if you see them do it multiple times...maybe its time for a 24-hour ban? What are they going to do? Go find someone else to get their MLP news from? Doubt it.
--Start the forum, Ill volunteer to set it up if you have access to phpbb3, keep all the memes and such in there, while you keep the blog for actual news.
My opinion anyways, which is all it is.
If you have a forum you can make 'groups' people can join, and even have forums just for those characters that only those who joins the group can see.

ReplyDelete2. Some trend analysis on fanfics. I'm not saying the community needs to converge, but it'd be nice to see what popular topics and ideas are being created. Is Celestia most often a dictator or benevolent? Present some fan fics with either viewpoint. Discussion may ensue.

ReplyDeleteWe take two ponies and ask the important question of who wins in a no holds barred brawl! Now this could take the form of an individual writing how the fight might go, a debate between two bronies as to which one wins, or just a simple poll. Hell you could even make it a weekly thing with tiers. Set up a standard tournament style rungs and each time a pony wins they advance and fight the next pony who won. All until we reach the final smack down where one pony will be declared the Strongest Pony Under the Heavens! We may or may not have to bar god level ponies (Celestia and Luna) from the tournament but we'll see what happens.

* Show staff/animators/musicians interviews.
* Brony artist/musician features (Except me! I'm too shy...)
* More Training Grounds - style contests. Tho preferably on a more lax schedule. Phoe needs her sleep, people!
* A forum would be cool. I like forums.

ReplyDeleteNO reports about bad press. It invites whining, and that fuels negative stereotypes that could lead to more bad press or trolling. Just ignore all bad press - haters gonna hate!

ReplyDeleteI'd love to see you attempt to get a lot of people here to rank their favorite characters (or just main cast from 1-6), and maybe see what the fans like or don't like. A comprehensive poll for most favorite and least favorite episodes would be cool to see too if enough people participate.
I think the makers of the show might actually take interest in these things as well and you guys are in a special spot to do them.
Perhaps we should have something where the readers can send in things...Like a Dear Celestia or an Ask Luna article where readers can e-mail into an address questions to said Pony and some will be picked to get replies on here. Sort of like allowing the reader base to get a chance to be like Twilight Sparkle and get a reply from Celestia or Luna or whoever.

ReplyDeleteThere really isn't that much news to be had generally, so I don't think we could leave out the fanfics/art and just make it news. Besides, to us fanfic writers it is important to have the spotlight once in a while. Though a daily digest of New Fics and a daily digest of Fic Updates might be interesting. Might make it easier to get through the queue too.
Little insights into the fanon. A did you know? sort of thing with research on conflicting aspects of fanon and such. Might be neat to see that too.
I enjoy it being an aggregate site, but actually seeing you guys do your thing is a lot of fun. Yanno? ^_^
I dunno. As long as it's well written and interesting, I'd probably read it. If you think its a topic worth exploring, I probably will too. Anything about the community, the show itself, ect is game.

ReplyDeleteHmmm...this site rocks so much as it is, it's hard to ask for more...but for my part, I'd like it if you wrote about the Pony phenomenon's impact on current pop culture, and the way it's shaking up assumptions about gender preferences in entertainment. I don't think the Pony phenom is just a fad...I think it's a revolution. I'd like to read more about that. Also, how about a discussion about what kind of merchandise Hasbro should offer to us older fans of the show? For instance, I want that "Bridlemaids" image on a T-shirt. On a sweatshirt. As a decal for my car. Anything!!!!

I'm not saying your opinions don't matter, it's just that we like you for what you do now. You don't need to change that. If there is something you want to write about that you really need to say, write a google.doc about it. there is no need to make regular rants the norm.

I wouldn't be much interested in reading interviews, but I'm sure some of the visitors here would really like that and I wouldn't start bitching and moaning if they were added :)
ReplyDeleteI'd be more interested in occasional 'state of the fanon' updates where you guys discuss some of the recent popular fanfics / PMVs / remixes etc. as well as any trends that have started popping up across several content creators - like Abby the Abacus, for instance.

I very very much enjoyed Newbie Artist Training Grounds, even though I missed a few days and just plain didn't upload my art on even more days. Stuff like that is really really fun to be a part of! Of course, it also takes a loooot of work for y'all to manage it, and it doesn't really sound like the sort of thing you wanted to do - creating your OWN content, not just managing ours.
I guess basically I like fluff, like 'Ask Trixie' or 'Top Ten Theories Why Ponies Can Pick Things Up With Their Hooves' (#1: It's magic, I ain't gotta explain shit) *and* things that focus on our community itself, like 'Brony Spotlight' and 'History of Fanon: Luna As Emo Waif' etc. :)

I have read a lot of really awesome ideas, and I don't want you guys to push yourselves too hard because you've been doing an amazing job! I really hope you guys can do some of the stuff that has been suggested, like podcasts, debates, discussions, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut one thing I find how it often is in fandom, communities, etc. is that the community members don't get to be involved that often. Comments can be interesting, and polls are cool, but the people who don't contribute any or very much fanfic/art/etc are often left out of the loop. Most big groups become to large to care much for their smaller members, even if they appreciate them. Take sports for example. You could buy all the stuff, watch all the games, be one of the biggest fans, but you'll never have a chance to actually be part of what you love. I wish you guys could acknowledge everypony, but I know that isn't possible. Still by talking to/interviewing more bronys besides the people who work with the show (though I would love that also because it would be very interesting) would be a fantastic way to influence and inspire everypony in this growing community. I understand other sites host forums, but most I've seen so far have been messing and confusing. Maybe you could have a place for discussion, like you leave a question and leave the community to discuss it. But if that's not possible I understand. :)
I understand programming can be difficult, but if it isn't too complex, it would be nice to have an account on here that you can post your pony works from, but I'm just getting off topic now ^^;
Anyway, besides possibly doing some of the great ideas some of the other bronys have come up with, it would be nice to have some more stuff involving the community! Asking questions, talking about different aspects of the show, etc. would be great to see.

I have been sewing and crafting and thinking about learining other crafts that I didn't know existed/never wanted to learn because of ponies. I would like to see a regular column either just discussing pony crafts or how to do them with patterns and such on a regular basis. Some people have mentioned the artist training grounds which I thought was awesome, so you could center these columns around something like that which encourages people of all levels to show off what they have created.

Please please PLEASE put shipping fanfic in its own section, WELL away from the main site. The girl-on-girl stuff in some of those fics is the kind of thing that gives bronies a bad name, and who needs that? It's one of the reasons I keep my pony fangirl status a secret, and that sucks.

The brony to be in interviewed can be announced and specific questions asked for a week before and then they can send a reply back to Daily.
