I was expecting CELESTIA OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE at the end, but Gilda is nice too, I suppose. Got a laugh out of me anyway.
But yeah, this is pretty awesome to see. Always glad to see a small insight into the changes that are made between the first draft and the final product.
See, things like this and the interviews are exactly what I would have wanted to see in the bonus features of a DVD. It's like I got what I wanted, even though it doesn't exist yet.
@Oleetar Keeping one's face toward the audience as much as possible is a basic rule of live theater because it makes it easier for them to hear the lines. It seems that rule is applied even to animation... makes it seem more professional I guess.
Just remember that strange minorities are everywhere, and they're simply that, minorities. I shouldn't be dragging conversation over into other blog posts though, good luck.
@C. Theron Vulpin huh. Confound these ponies, they drive me to learn about live theater.
@nudemanonbike I think it has to do with giving the editor his framing prerogative- if he he feels the need to trim what you've shot, the viewer is seeing them start to turn behind them and then move into the next seen at a totally different angle. Unless you're trying to do dreamworld madness or the like, Character exciting a fram should be facing the same when when they re-eneter the frame in the next shot when they're traveling.
It's so cool to be able to get a peek behind the curtain. I hadn't considered scenes like this to need the sort of "stage direction" and blocking that real-life scenes do.
@TenchiFreak5 It's called a shoutout to us bronies. That's not normally in there, but the guy who worked on the show and sent us this included random Gilda because we would lol at it. And we did.
@Pegasi and @Oleetar DON'T BRING THAT FLAME WAR WITH YOU!! Sorry about the yelling, but let's just NOT argue over inresolvable issues of opinion on sexuality and fanfics in the comments section of unrelated articles (and try to keep it below flame-war trolling when the article is related). Good? Now, back to normalcy!
Clips like this really show the attention to detail and love the animators have for the show. I honestly wonder if this much effort is spent for a scene that only lasted mere seconds in the 'typical' kids cartoon. Probably not.
It also demonstrates a perk of them using Flash instead of traditional cels; you can much more easily edit frames to fix problems. Or slip in jokes, as Gilda flying by briefly demonstrates..
.. and yes, I too pulled up the episode in my pony folder to see if she was there and I missed it. Nope, just a shoutout, as others have said.. :)
I am fascinated by the process of animation and its flexibility as a storytelling medium. This was pretty awesome! A follow-up question, if I may; wouldn't the character turning upstage (away from the camera) have been fixed in storyboard? Or do storyboards no longer exist in the traditional sense?
The amount of detail that the crew puts into one very short scene amazes me. They found mistakes in the scene, and then polished it up. Animation is magic.
Next time someone throws a brony convention we should really honor the animators and staff who worked on MLP: FiM, they have been so involved with the fanbase and it has truly made it amazing.
Oh yes. They still depend upon storyboards. Even shows with really fast turnaround times like South Park, shows you'd expect to take as many shortcuts as possible to streamline the production process, depend heavily upon storyboards.
Always good to learn something and interesting. Never realized so much effort was put into a single scene, makes you wonder how many errors they have to catch on a regular basis.
Wow, the animators are giving us prelly little gems every now and then! (They surely know how big our desire to know more about the show is!) It think this bears repeating: Best. Community. Ever.
I always love seeing the behind the scenes stuff. So if anyone is wondering why season 2 is taking a lot of time, now you know what they have to do with every single scene.

Very nice, thanks for uploading
ReplyDeleteWow awesome! Ha Gilda in that last scene with all the animals.
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty cool to learn.
ReplyDeleteBrix were shat today.
ReplyDeleteOh Gilda what are you doing, you aren't a forest creature!
ReplyDeleteLol awsum
ReplyDeleteWow, this is really really cool. I wish they'd do more of these things; I LOVE behind-the-scenes looks at things.
ReplyDeleteAnd suddenly,
ReplyDeleteGILDA
XD
So much work goes into this show, and it is VERY much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteLauren Faust might be stepping down, but with the crew they have, I'm not even a little worried.
Wow. Oddly enough, the visual artistic process isn't that far removed from the literary artistic process. Interesting to see.
ReplyDeleteA normal news. Nothing realted to the most discussed topic right now. Thank Celstia.
ReplyDeleteMade my day right there :-)
ReplyDeletePause at 0:11 ....WTF MAN?

HA! Good with animals, not so much with a Gryphon.
ReplyDeleteI love behind the scenes stuff like this! Definitely an interesting watch, hope to see more like this in the future!
ReplyDeleteI loled hard at Gilda.
I love that they pay so much attention to us! It's delightful!
ReplyDeleteAw, why wasn't that last bit in the actual episode? Bonus Gilda cameo.
ReplyDeleteBy God, the attention to detail! And to think that filly Fluttershy still makes me d'aaw, even in a little behind-the-scenes thing!
ReplyDeleteVery neat!
ReplyDeleteAwesome thing to see.
ReplyDeleteSee, things like this and the interviews are exactly what I would have wanted to see in the bonus features of a DVD. It's like I got what I wanted, even though it doesn't exist yet.
I for one am pleased and thankful.
@Pegasi
ReplyDeleteSo does that mean you'll be staying?
if so, yay~
Also, can anyone explain why turning away from the camera is bad?
@Oleetar
ReplyDeleteI still can't decide.
Hovever, my picture of this fandom is broken forever. Guess these guys on /co/ were right about that "Furries ruin everything" shit.
This looks like a DVD extra.
ReplyDeleteHUB! MAKE THIS A DVD EXTRA!
Thank you.
@Oleetar
ReplyDeleteThat might be an edict handed down from above.
I had the same thought; I know you shouldn't have your back to the crowd in theater, but why not here?
ReplyDelete@Oleetar

DAT FUKKIN GILDA
ReplyDeleteIt appears that video is from the "other studio" guys since they animated ep24 mostly. Gilda, ofc, was put for the lulz.
ReplyDeleteAnd I belive it was the same guy who animated evil pony in some episode >_>
Lol random gilda
ReplyDeleteReally goes to show how much work goes into animating.
ReplyDelete@Pegasi

@C. Theron Vulpin
huh. Confound these ponies, they drive me to learn about live theater.
And out of fucking nowhere, Gilda.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly... GILDA, OUT OF NOWHERE.
ReplyDeleteOh that Gilda!

ReplyDeleteWAAAAH! Suddenly, Pegasi out of context nowhere!
Could I have some moar please?

ReplyDeleteI'm enough of a dork that I immediately checked the episode after watching this, and I didn't see her.
I'm pretty sure Fluttershy can't turn a certain way to the camera is because her hair would get in the way of her face.
ReplyDeleteSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! GILDA!

Shhh it's okay
ReplyDeleteWow, this really shows how much effort can go into just one scene.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Gilda out of fucking nowhere!
If I see that Gilda ONE MORE TIME!...
ReplyDeleteLulz will be had.
This was neat. I still wish they'd make something showing the pencil sketches, Flash layers, etc., tho.

ReplyDeleteTo people asking about
ReplyDeleteTurning toward the audience when moving or exiting is a common practice in theater. The idea is to remain open to the audience as much as possible.
This practice was carried on through film and television as well as animation.
To answer one's question above about storyboards
ReplyDeleteOh yes. They still depend upon storyboards. Even shows with really fast turnaround times like South Park, shows you'd expect to take as many shortcuts as possible to streamline the production process, depend heavily upon storyboards.
Wow! 3 more seconds of new official footage!
ReplyDeleteIt'll find it's way into a PMV in 10 seconds flat!
I think Gilda got a wee confused there.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to learn something and interesting. Never realized so much effort was put into a single scene, makes you wonder how many errors they have to catch on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteHehe stealth Gilda.

ReplyDeletelol GILDA flys by at 1:04
ReplyDelete(HuffytheMagicDragon)
Come for the Fluttershy, stay for the Gilda
ReplyDeleteIf you pause the video just right it looks like Gilda flies out of nowhere and hits Fillyshy in the face.
ReplyDeleteAll the tiny details in a show really add up to a much better finished project. Thanks for showing this!
ReplyDeleteHaha pretty cool
ReplyDeleteGilda's just frolicking with the forest creatures~
ReplyDeleteThis is the kind of stuff I want to see as extras on the DVD/Blu-Ray.
ReplyDeleteSee? Gilda DOES have a nicer side to her.
