Jayson Thiessen is the supervising director. For those of you who don't know that means, he's in charge of creative oversight for every aspect of the show, and making sure the script, voice acting, music, and animation all come together into a cohesive whole. Friendship is Magic wouldn't be the awesome cartoon it is today without his genius guidance.
Someone working for Hasbro is allowing us to interview him, the same way we did with Daniel Ingram a while back, and just like the last one, I'll be gathering questions from all of you!
I'm not 100% sure what we are allowed to ask about in terms of season two, though I was told that these types of questions aren't completely banned. Try to keep them to a minimum at least!

I figured you guys simply took from her lead, following her cause because it was so good and true, and having vested your own hearts and souls into the show, could not possibly change it in such a way since it was done this way from the start.

ReplyDeleteWe already know that Ditzy Doo and Princess Luna (who is, of course, tied with Rainbow Dash for best pony ever) are making returns in Season 2. How significant will these returns be? It was clarified that Ditzy's "official character" status means she'll have her gags storyboarded, instead of just thrown in when needed, but how often will this be? Obviously we don't want it to be overdone, like, "HEY GUYS THIS IS DITZY DOO SHE'S GONNA DROP STUFF NOW" or anything, but I highly doubt that was anywhere near the plans. And will Luna appear in more than one episode, or just the single one that's been told of so far?

I would maybe see if he can give us a rough estimate when they plan to start airing episodes from season 2 ( all I've seen was mentioning them finishing season 2 by December... ) and maybe... maybe... ask if they can give us a sneak peak as to what to expect sometime before that day to kind of keep our hopes alive.

I might be alone on this, but I thought the stories on "The Cutie Mark Chronicles sounded really disappointing and stupid, and the story narrators didn't seem very reliable to me. Did Lauren Faust come up with the ideas for that episode? If not, who? And any chance these will be forgotten and replaced with better origin ideas? (Unlikely, I know, but hearing about this episode really irritated me, especially Pinkie Pie's story.)

How do you go about choosing everything from lyrics to what beat goes with them. In that a personal bias question would be is if there might be a chance that Rainbow Dash might get her own song that could possibly be a rock ballad?

I'm actually quite interested in this as well, and not just because Luna's pretty much tied for my favorite pony ( with Fluttershy ). I'd like to know more about the Princesses, maybe some detail on what lead up to Luna turning into Nightmare Moon and how much they differ from the average pony if possible.
1. What drew you into working on this kind of project in the first place? Clearly, the old MLP wasn't exactly top-notch entertainment, so what inspired you to take on this endeavor and actually work hard to make a quality show out of a historically mediocre franchise?

And lastly, if these things aren't thought up, how much of the world's layout is influenced by the fans?

First off, I would like to state that I know many of these are too trivial or SPOILER-inducing for them to be likely to receive good answers. The ones that I have repeated are for the sake of adding to their demand.
ReplyDeleteI want to know if Derpy will be portrayed as a savant or some sort of hyper-intelligent being that is unable to voice her thoughts. There is a meme of her being unable to speak coherently, but it would be cool to see it contrasted by hidden intelligence. Though, that piano thing from the Pinky-sense episode makes me doubt it. Certain fan-fictions have enriched the character with depth that makes her quite endearing. Have those inspired an episode or plot development?
Will prog-rock be used as an influence on any future songs? Mystic characters like Celestia would fit with Genesis/Yes style. Many have attribute a Queen attitude to Rainbow Dash.
How has fan-reaction impacted the second Season. Has it inspired you?
How does Jason Thiessen feel about fans/bronies attributing JK Rowling/Hideaki Anno status to Lauren Faust and himself. Is it strange to have people hanging on your every word as if you were Celestia herself? (jk) I've seen George Lucas and JJR Tolkien treated this way as well.
Has a "Bible" been put together by the staff to help keep the canon of the plot coherent and consistent. If you cannot answer certain questions about the canon, can you validate that there are answers?
Has all the fan-input made writing the show less of a writers-block and more of a "How the hell do I choose what ideas to fit into the show and which to save for next season" experience. Is there a feel of increased enjoyment of your work because of such a phenomena.

ReplyDeleteLast month was pretty rich for many events regarding MLP community and
the show. Hasbro launched some commercials aimed to non-TA (target
audience) fans, opened Twitter and Facebook group. There even some new
merchs and t-shirts appears on the horizon, made specially for
"bronies".
Within all those months some parts of the large MLP community
very
carefully watched all your public words or any words from any other
team member regarding the show. But the question that did pop-up
during all those events i mentioned never was answered: how all of
this will affect the show, especially s02?
You may be will be surprised but many fans in the community do not want
any such fanservice or references to bronies in the show itself. And
I'm not talking just about "Ponygoons" (part of the community that
considered to be the "cleanest" one), but about some EqD crowd and

They want to show be as it is, without any small "nods"
to some fandom theories and memes, like: Trollestia, "leasbianship"
("shipping", relationship between characters in general) and
"Cupcakes" (latter is fanfic, long story short: Pinkie goes
crazy and torture and kills all her friends). While Derpy isn't
something that anyone can be against, any small "nods" (we do
understand that nothing can be added directly during post-production) to
the things I mentioned is pretty much hurt much the show for MANY fans.
So, you never stated your position regarding this subject. May be you
can do it now? I'll share your reply.

ReplyDeleteHow is her part going to shape up? Only reason I'm mentioning Luna specifically is that unlike other characters like Derpy or Lyra, the grand whopping majority of fanon on Luna is incredibly consistent. So wheras the other characters don't have any set personalities and therefore can be characterized however the studio pleases...Luna's characterization becomes a bit tricky because there's a generally accepted impression of her...even though she's had all of 5 minutes of screen time so far!
I saw the excellent Equestria Girls video. Good stuff. Are you okay with interacting this closely with the internet fans though (as the video acknowledges the Bronies and a shout out to DJ PON-3)? We've seen how rabid some fans are. The whole debacle about spreading the news Lauren was pregnant by someone stalking her Facebook profile and causing an argument about ideals on the internet is an example of how rabid these fans get. Personally I rather disassociate with the 4chan roots because of how extreme some of their users are (and based on some of the posts here, there are people that agree with me. And to editorialize a bit, the show's views and lessons definitely go against a lot of what your average "Anonymous" user believes). I just think if something goes slightly off with the show, that crowd will flip out and make a mess of things.

- Is Hasbro willing to bend and make some higher quality figures? I don't mind the $5 figures we've been seeing. But I know a lot of fans what some articulation and other things that aren't typical of Hasbro's mass market toys. For comparison's sake, McFarlane Toys pumps out Halo action figures that have some 20+ points of articulation, have a handful of molds that are just re-colored and re-released, and only cost about $10. (Check Spawn.com if you want to see them)
- How does translating the show into other languages work? I'm watching these episodes and see lots of puns and jokes that would work in English but doubt translate directly.
- If hypothetically a Blu Ray set were to come to fruition, will there be some commentary from you, the crew, the cast, and of course, Lauren?

I would assume that Hasbro would encounter the mainstream more often, so is there any worry about the older demographic being a liability more than an asset (which is what it seemed like we were being viewed as before the bad press started rolling in)?

Or do you have to continue playing it very safe and still tailor the show specifically to the original target audience as with season 1?

Or, is it intended that they actually have a longer life cycle and follow something closer to a humans aging time scale?
4) Given Twilight Sparkle's surprisingly detailed scientific description of the makeup of a comet in episode 24, this suggests that real physics and astronomy on some level still applies in this fictional story, hence, will the relationship between "real" science and the more mythical fantasy elements of the show ever be expanded upon as the show goes forward?

ReplyDeleteEven though the show's creative team is likely under orders to not give any kind of attention to fan-created contents, some concepts and storylines must have been able, through sheer force of their pervasiveness, to pass through to some of the elements involved in production. Has the massive fan-created creative output been something of a bane to the creative team, preventing you from using any stories, characters or concepts that you or the writers originally had in mind for future episodes?

"Is there any chance that there will be a MLP:FiM based movie or video game coming out?"
And, will the creation of seasons continue after the second season? Assuming the popularity of the show will stay like this or even more.

Is there a chance that fan created Ponies can be in the Background?? So you don't have to copy the same pony 7 times for the BG xD
