So far this event has been amazing. After the 30 days are up, we might roll without another set of challenges after a short break... It has been a lot of fun. I really want to participate too! Confound this blog taking my free time.

#167 today. Bluh bluh, huge letdown. This is only half the comic I originally intended to draw, just didn't have enough time to complete it. I can actually feel my motivation suffering because of it. =X Want to get back to drawing higher quality pieces, but I do want to complete this comic later at some point.

Phoe is supposed to be wearing Trixie's hat, and a crowd was going to be in front of the stage, representing all the Newbie Artist Training Grounds submitters.
The second half of the comic would've had Phoe taking a few panels to restate how cool she is, while a stealthy solar prominence is coming out of the sun. The prominence would nuke Trixie's hat to dust, Phoe would get all Ren & Stimpy droopy–faced, and trollestia would make an appearance with face similar to the last panel of Ambrose's "pony building something" submission.
Then an extra panel with Trixie in the "why would you do that!" meme pose and Phoe doing the :shrug: pose.
TERRIBLE BONUS JOKE: Pretend Trixie's hat is named Snowflake!

#8: I really loved Pinkie in her Celestia dressup a few days ago, so I'm glad we get to see her again. That's probably her great entrance for the Summer Sun Festival afterparty.

Alright, I think that'll be all for now. On a sidenote, I'd just like to add that I don't understand why anyone would ever want to overthrow Celestia. She's pretty much the most laid-back ruler ever! Even with the whole sending-Luna-to-the-moon business... I mean, think about it. Basically, that just meant that Luna went on holidays for a thousand years while Celestia did all her work for her. Man! That should happen to me sometime. So what I'm saying is that Celestia is awesome, especially since she basically said "Screw this gala, I'll spend my night at the donut shop." Now that's a concept I can get behind.

Also, tried a new colouring technique (redrawing lines on computer and filling, rather than using brush tool), which, if today is any indication, is faster and cleaner :) Training progress, check.

I like the self-reference in 31.
39's special effect is pretty good.
I like the background of 52, it's curvy, colorful, and all the colors work together.
62 is the most unusual. It even beats out the mosaic art.

I laughed hardest at 137. It goes with 45, too!
I don't know what 170 is supposed to look like, but it's funny if you imagine that Celestia is lying on her side next to the town. Gravid daikaiju!

I've leveled several times during the course of this event. Of course, I've also had some colossal failures (day 21 was a terrible drawing) and some that I wish I could spend another week or so touching up and detailing (22 and 23). I've a few I want to re-do now that I am more confident in my own art style, (7, 8, and 18).
I have a few I absolutely adore! (19, 20, and 23)
I guess what I'm saying is what Fox E said: practice, practice, practice. With another 10 or so levels, I may be able to produce color, quality art that #mlp-fim will accept!
And @Phoe, @Sethisto I'd love to continue something like this after the 30 days are, but maybe a little more time between entries?

Another day full of absolutely amazing pieces, so many complicated and time consuming-looking pieces and comics and everything and I'm sure everypony really put their all into it, it's obvious. And then you have stuff like #83 that just plain blows me away.
Today's theme... Well, let's just say it's insane to even try and think what we may be seeing here tomorrow. Now to spend the next few hours thinking of something really clever!

@Argembarger Terrible or not, it's actually kind of adorable. Plus, more animations always make me squee!
ReplyDeleteWhen you do each frame, do you trace over a template to keep things consistent or do you manually redraw everything? It looks like the latter, and if so, I'm very impressed; I can't maintain that sort of consistency at all, even when trying to draw two heads of the same size right next to each other.
@Kits I want to redo a bunch of mine too, especially with actual vectory stuff and whatnot. Not like generic line tool work or anything as I can already do that, but the show–style weight–changing lines that make everything look awesome.
@Atlur Seth says in the Training Grounds init post that we'll go to the end of June, so as long as Phoe can still brain us up themes, we have until next Thursday to go, which is our last theme day.
As for the whole continuing–drawing–events thing, Seth said (check this thread's op) they might do another set of challenges after a break (any Iron Artist challenge is exhausting). There is the speed–writing challenge this weekend, so I don't see why we couldn't have another event at least similar to this one.

I would love to know how these artists do the weight changing lines. I've asked a few of them if they use illustrator and the universal answer has been no, they use photoshop. Which amazes me. TheXxxX did one of his awesome clop-tacular comics in show style and made a comment about using over 100 layers. I can't even draw a smooth line in photoshop, let alone the 23784523978 needed for something like that. It doesn't help that I can't find examples of people learning the style: Either they don't bother emulating the show or they're 99% show accurate.
I do remember a 'tutorial' about vectoring images posted here on EqD. I put tutorial in quotes because the author assumed that you could just dash off those curved lines w/o issue.
I look at a lot of art done in that style and I nearly give up. I don't have the knowledge, time, or talent to do something that amazing. It always makes me feel like a blank-flank, fumbling around using professional grade tools to do a finger painting while others watch on in bemusement. Even a few of my friends inspire this feeling in me.
@BronyQuest constantly dumps on his own stuff--And I can't believe how good it looks and how fast he does it. I can barely get uncolored sketches out on a daily basis (at least I semi-shade now), let alone actually use photoshop for anything beyond scanning. Maybe I need to start over using just a tablet and ps? But then I'd lose the little drawing ability I have!
I know it's not just the color, I've seen some sketches that make my jaw hit the floor. TheXxxX again is a great example. (http://thexxxx.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3fauyx) Those lines are so much nicer than anything I've ever laid down. And that shading! It's almost enough to make me weep! #MLP-FiM has a sketchbook section now. I submitted some of my stuff. The I saw the latest additions to the gallery. I damn near quit drawing right then and there. F*cking pencils, how do they work?
Man, I'm talking myself into a bit of a depression. I'll have to sit down and do a different drawing than the one I originally planned. These large, multi-panel ones are fun and nice for a laugh (and a Phoe comment =D ) but I'm almost never happy with how they turn out. I think my best art in todays is that 1/4" Bon Bon silhouette in panel 4, and that's kinda of pathetic. I'll have to stick to something simple that I can try to make it look as good as I can. Even if it barely matches the theme.
Anyway.
Does anypony have any sort of tips/techniques to share about doing show-style artwork?
#83 here. So many great entries today, and I really enjoyed this theme--I just wish I could've shaded Rainbow Dash more effectively. I spent way too much time thinking about how Equestria should look from space, and in the end you can't even see the continent very well anyway. Hah.

Anyway, I think you should switch from Illustrator to Easy Paint Tool SAI. It's a very simple, well designed, intuitive program with nice vectoring tools. It's very easy to adjust the line weight and then start coloring right in the same program. I ditched Adobe for it a long time ago and never looked back. It's also cheap and more forgiving on older computers/computers with low memory.

ReplyDeleteYeah, haha. I tried to trace one frame onto another, but the paper I used is too thick for that, I couldn't see through it at all! I used a ruler to generally try to keep the frame borders the same size, and everything else is good old-fashioned eyeballing and estimation. You can tell that from a few things, like how Celestia's horn grows and shrinks and how her eye kind of slides to the front of her head over time. When I was throwing the GIF together though, I kind of found myself enjoying the rough-and-tumble chaotic style of it. It probably could have used some more intermediate frames to help it be more coherent, though.
tldr on line weights: I dunno about SAI since I haven't used it yet, but I've never seen tutorials on it and all I can think to do is use erasers to mimic that style.
ReplyDelete@Argembarger I'm a fan of the not–fully–refined pencil animation look (eg. Rejected Cartoons), so I personally rather like it. So considering you eyeballed every frame, super job!
I use printer paper myself now so I can't trace things very well either anymore. So much for using that as a crutch eh? =P
As for "her eye kind of slides to the front of her head over time," that is both hilarious and :gonk: at the same time.
@Phoe's eyes, I don't know anything about colour theory so I always just coloured them magenta, same as her hair.
@Kits + @Rachel I'd forgotten about SAI, most of the artists I know of love it to death so it's probably worth looking into at this point, especially if it's more easily workable on an old machine like mine. I don't have Photoshop, so apart from that, the only way I can think of to mimic the canon vectory look is prodigious use of the eraser tool to trim down the ends of lines. =X
Even if I did have Photoshop, you're right in that I haven't encountered any tutorials for how to accomplish such a look. Maybe it's a plugin, or they really do spend forever manually erasing things into nice swishy lines.
I don't have a mac either so I can't help there.
And yeah, I have an artist friend who yesterday woke up telling me "I just learned to draw faces better in my dream!" And then he went from guideline sketch to fully completed work of art in like three hours. ò Дó!? mfw
It kind of saps motivation seeing that happen at the same time I'm trying to work out one of my dinky little pencil ponies, but then again he's been doing this for well over a decade now, whereas I have all of three weeks under my belt. Progress has been made in that time though, so as long as there's improvement to be made, there's drive to continue.
Honestly your stuff isn't bad at all, same as BronyQuest's. Better than mine in any case. =P It's one of those irritating "it takes practice" things.
And then TheXxxX's stuff. D= My god, it's full of win. That's my favourite kind of pencil art right there.
I use mechanical pencils, so what I do for that (when i have time which is never this week apparently) is use sandpaper to flatten the edge of the lead into a wedge shape, which gives me a nice sharp point on one side, and the perfect shading surface on the other. Just have to rotate the pencil to switch between them.
Alternatively you can sit there for five minutes scribbling your pencil back and forth on scratch paper until the lead takes on that shape, but that's boring and I cba to do so.
That doesn't help with drawing smooth lines of course, much less maintain proportions, neither of which I'm sure how to do. Anyone have a spare copy of The Geometry of Art and Life?

But then there is the whole "who are you/how did youget in here/I'm calling the cops!" dynamic, which really puts a damper on how swell such a gift would be.
So I guess, in thanks, I WON'T stalk anyone and show up randomly to bequeath them with gifts. That sounds like a plan :)

Thank you soo much for the larger scan, it was soo adorable n.n Reminds me when i used to "horse" around with the foals on the farm. I had one who i used to tackle, she would just jump up and tackle me back, Even when she got to full height and weight she still liked to tackle me, but she was soo gentle LOL . . . its kinda funny to see a full grown horse use her legs to takle someone and pin them down. WIsh i still had the pictures, yes i got bruises once and a while . . . but hoove do that, she never hurt me tho.
YEah im going to skip out todays content drawing, because in my pic i had already drew a pony getting banished . . . call me lazy if you will . . . but i gots me a story to write and some wow to play

ReplyDeleteGood heavens Kits, it would have taken me like 16 hours to make a two page comic like yours. It's good if I can scratch together 3 hours on a work day. No time for anything but pencil and paper, no shading.
Later, when I get a moment, I'll have to see what this Easy Paint Tool SAI is. I tried installing Art Rage on this Win 7 machine, but it did not work, and the hipster Win 7 MSPaint tries to pose as an emulator. Not cool.

It's also my first attempt at drawing one of the mane six in the original style, so I was uncertain about it in general, but it came out a lot better than I thought it might.

ReplyDeleteRather then using a circle brush to make the lines, use a caligraphic brush. I use the gimp but I know this is in photoshop as well; somewhere in something like the tool options dialog is the shape of the brush.
