Hey,
I usually don't choose winners, but that one totally won, just sayin!
I'll tweet these over to the MLP Twitter page.
All flag submissions are after the break! Only 11 (late people...)! You guys slacked off!

Number 9 is also fantastic. I love the "Raise the sun" thing from Cutie Mark Chronicles, and that is just.. beautiful. I wish there was a larger version.
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer #9, the one you chose would have been better if it used Celestia's cutie mark as the sun.
ReplyDeleteHay, I didn't even know there WAS a flag contest!
ReplyDelete9 is probably the best one.
ReplyDeleteI think I also prefer 9.
ReplyDelete1 is very creative, but imo it has a bit too much detail for a flag.
9 is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThere was a flag contest?
ReplyDeleteNumber 9!
ReplyDeleteNine is definitely the best out of these, but number one did come pretty close. I really like the way in nine, how he depicted both Luna and Celestia, very well done.
ReplyDelete9 is definitely great, with 1 in close second.
ReplyDeleteI SEE VICII FLAGS
ReplyDelete...but no Hammer and Horseshoe (or whatever it was)?
Number 9 is just vectors pasted together!
ReplyDelete1 is all original!
1 and 9 would make great wallpapers, but I'd have to go with 10 as the best flag for very imaginative use of symbols.
ReplyDeleteGot to Agree with Seth on this one.
ReplyDeleteI was making one but gimp kept crashing. :(
ReplyDeleteWas nowhere near as good as these though!
It's funny, I'm drawing on sai right now and I drew a wall clock that looks just like #3
ReplyDeleteAll these designs are pretty unique! I like #9 and #10 especially :)

ReplyDeleteSorry, Seth, but nine is the best.
ReplyDeletenein!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll agree with Seth here. #9 is following very close by.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I always he last to find out about these contests? I would have done my own!
ReplyDeleteThat said, nine was the best.
@Sethisto
ReplyDeleteYessir it is. But I did mention that when I tossed it up in the comments section of the original post.
I do dig #1 though! Props to them for actually putting forth the effort! Celestia knows I didn't put forth much.
1 is definitely the best. 9 is also awesome.
ReplyDeleteNumber 1 is awesome!
ReplyDeleteAlso, no love for 2? That's pretty cool too.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think 9 looks better than 1. Still they are both way to complicated for flags. And the colors on many of them seems to be ripped of Celestia's mane so the colors are ugly for a flag. I think 10 might have some potential, but the colors on it makes me wanna puke.
ReplyDeleteNo offense people, but I pick none of the above...
I like the thought that went into #3 and #10.
ReplyDelete@Number Six
ReplyDeleteYou're right, #3 is pretty good and I like it. However the colors on #10 are... bad.
I like 2. Number 1 has too much going on there for a flag.
ReplyDelete@Number Six
ReplyDeleteAfter drawing flag 3.3, I realized it looked like the kind of all-inclusive mishmash that would get spit out by design-by-committee. Terrible to look at, but politically correct. Strangely fitting for the more politically "modern" Equestria I imagined adopting it. :P
#9 is nice for a poster design, but #10 actually looks like a feasible flag.
ReplyDeleteNumber 9 is definitely the best.
ReplyDeleteLooking at number two long enough makes me want to play Pacman for some reason.
ReplyDeleteIf I had three choices out of ten to use at anytime I'd choose 1, 2 and 9.
#11 looks too much like the turkish flag
ReplyDeleteI think a few of these submissions don't realise how hard it is to dye a cloth flag with a gradient...
ReplyDeleteIn the show the flag appeared once or twice, its Celestias Cutie mark over a red background. sorta like the Vietnamese flag, just replace the yellow star with celly's cutie mark.
ReplyDeleteI like 9 better. 1 just feels way too busy for a flag design. Sure 9 doesn't feel like a traditional flag either but it is fairly simplistic still and the concept is stunning (the raising of the heavenly bodies), it is also is just beautiful to look at. Only two things about it would have to change I think, the rainbow on the Luna side should be removed and the textured background on the Celestia side should be removed and either be something that is achieved across the whole flag by the material it is printed on or something added to the template to create a non-standard printing of the flag.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, it's been 1000 years, number 9, as much as it is awesome, wouldn't be the flag anymore, simply because if everypony thought Celestia was the only ruler, Luna can't have been on the flag.
ReplyDelete@Shine
ReplyDeleteDoesn't look ENOUGH like the Turkish flag! I <3 #11! Perfect for the period of the Celestial Empire, after the coup that collapses the Equestrian Republic :3
9 is very nice, but 11 is keeping it simple. 1 is a tad complicated with the colours and stars and such...
ReplyDeleteI had a huge post on all of the flags . . . then blogger errored O.O something about conflicting posts . . . WTF I cant type it all out again *sigh*
ReplyDeleteSummary, I love 9, 1 is too convoluted for a flag but a perfect background image. My vote is for 10, the imagery used there is very creative, expressing unity of the Equestrian races. While its pastel colors are too light for my taste. To me, its perfect. Think about the imagery in 10, its actually well thought out.
@Doc Steedly:
ReplyDelete10 had its own problems though. The symbols feel awkwardly placed and the Eastery background colors don't really mesh well with the mustard yellow used in the center symbol.
1 is very nice, but I can't see them having Nightmare Moon on the flag. Perhaps if the moon didn't have her profile on it . . .
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm very fond of 9, but it would have to be either a very old or a very new flag to acknowledge both princesses equally.
It may very well be a mishmash of vectors, but #9 has still the best design.
ReplyDelete#8 and #11 are also good ones IMHO.
The symbolism of 10 is really good (reminds me of the crowns of egypt), but it needs a better color scheme.
ReplyDeleteAs they stand, 9 is my favorite.
Once you zoom in on #1 you can see what seth is talking about. The size constraints due to the blog do not do the flag justice.
ReplyDeleteIn actuality the flag #1 is 2851x2072 pixels which is 39.66x28.83 inches. It is a lot bigger and detailed than the blog makes it look.
Conversely Flag #9 is only 800x480 pixels which is 11.3x6.68 inches.
Seeing that the event asked for a flag #1 is the clear choice.
#9 is stll very nice but may be better as a royal seal or some sort of national symbol/crest.
You dun goofed. 9 is the best. The won you chose def gets second though. But nine is just amazing

ReplyDeleteI'm the maker of #10, I just forgot to include my username. Here's my deviation page: http://kapten-n.deviantart.com/art/Equestrian-flag-213376376
ReplyDeleteI hear what you guys say about the colours. Please give me some specific feedback on my deviation page and suggest some better colours.
I realize that the symbols are placed a bit awkwardly too. I wanted the white circle to be exactly in the middle, but that makes the rest of that symbol look oddly placed. Should I remove the sun and the moon? I only placed them there because the flag looked a bit empty.
Again, please provide feedback on my deviation page. ^^
These are some really great concepts, but Seth I think that the first one is a little to complicated for a flag. #2 is a better compromise. I like the concepts that Alterform (#3) presents with the different flags over the ages.
ReplyDeleteI love the progression of flags in number 3. Excellently done.
ReplyDeleteI also want to say that flags should be somewhat simple. All those flags using gradient colours would be difficult to make from fabric.
ReplyDeletedesktop 16x9 res of Number 9 is amazingggggggg
ReplyDeleteBoth 1 and 9 are very good however neither makes a very 'practical' flag due to their overly complex nature and dependency on gradient textures. As far as fantasy-flags goes, however -- you can be as complex as you want :-)
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bugs me about 1 is the use of the "Mare in the Moon" ... it would be a constant reminder to Luna that she was once 'Nightmare Moon'. I don't think she'd be too happy about that.
I agree with Seth as far as 1 being the most creative vs 9 which, when you get right down to it, merely took two 'desktop' designs and spliced them.
Kudos to 3 for proposing how the flag would change over the ages although I'm not that fond of the Current Era flag -- (not 'regal' enough).
I wish I paid more attention to this contest -- This is the sort of thing I like doing... I might end up doing it anyway because some of these gave me ideas for my own design.
10's use of symbolism is good but the color choice is as painful as walking down the 'Barbie' aisle of a toy store.
9 is the best quality-wise. 11 looks more archaic and fitting to the setting. A mix of the two might be nice if done right.
ReplyDelete#10, but with a revised color palette.
ReplyDeleteThis was a contest?
ReplyDeleteDarnit, I was gonna make one too D:
Yeah... I don't think I agree with 1 being the "winner," either. It just strikes me as awkward. However much we may criticize the methods used in creating 9, it's probably the most charming of the lot. There are problems, but nothing that can't be fixed. It's complicated, but so are many real countries' flags. Heck, so is 1. It could be simplified, and perhaps it could use some stark red or sheer white on the left to balance the heaviness of the right side's dark blue. All it needs is some tinkering. It may not be strictly original, but it's hard to argue with something so promising.
ReplyDeleteAll of them are pretty good.
ReplyDelete#1 is good but a little too-complex for a flag, #9 is tops but may act better as a royal seal or something.
#3 has a good story to it but the final flag needs to look more regal.
I'm leaning towards #10, it's really thoght out but the color scheme needs less bright colors, maybe if you used #2 or #6's background colors and substituted the sun and moon for Celestia and Luna's marks..
We're making a flag for Equestria not its rulers, nor day nor night.
ReplyDeleteYou've been outvoted Seth. #9 wins.
ReplyDelete#1 is good, but it's just a bit busy for a flag.
And hey, what's the thing about Equestria that makes it special? The fact that two goddesses live there. From what I've gathered, Equestria is actually kinda small.
8 is the most suitable as a flag. That it trolls Luna is a nice bonus.
ReplyDeleteI made number eleven, and I based it of symbols shown in the actual show. If you look at the flagpole at the beggining of 'Call of the Cutie' you see a dark red flag with two points and if you look at the balcony that Princess Celestia is going to apear on in the first episode you see the moon inside the sun symbol. I feel that this design is the most realistic.
ReplyDeleteI like 11. Would be nicer with cool colours or less warm colours.
ReplyDeletethey're all very nice but, uhm, most are also kinda ... busy. a flag is, essentially, a battle standard. it was developed from pieces of cloth and hide used to help rally troops during the more hectic battles of the ancient world. 1 and 9 are beautiful, gorgeous and also way to hard to identify across a field of battle. they're REALLY nice, don't get me wrong, they're just not ... flaggy enough.
ReplyDelete11 is pretty good, though the red has connotations that, well, might not be in the show's best interest? Communism and all that. sorry ...
10 is about the most complex you'd want to get before the flag is cluttered. i don't like the color choices but i understand them. uhm, yeah. personal preference enters this one. sorry.
2 is really nice and not very complex but a flag is also supposed to be able to be announced, like coats of arms and the like. strange but true. that one, well, it has some overlap that is a bit ... much. still, very nice.
8, 7, and 4 are the one's i'd chose, myself. easy to describe, easy to recreate, easy to declare. i have no real preference here, to be honest, though i'd love to see something that has Celestia and Luna's marks without being cluttered.
6 is ... oddly proportioned. unless that strange border is decorative or indicative of something. it also lacks Celestia. Lunar Republic forever! uhm, if that's alright with you.
3. i like the first two, and the history is nice. the last ('current') is also cluttered.
simplicity and stylization. two, three or four colors. simple shapes or easy to describe shapes (some flags don't follow this convention and are the worse for it). and usually, the flag elements represent things, like red for valor or worker's rights or the like, blue for justice and vigilance.
Edited because of what Anon 9:06 said: i ... i didn't notice that. the school flag could be a provincial flag but it is usually a national one (at least in America). and the symbol is really nice, that was the part i loved about your flag. the red color from 'Call of the Cutie' could be color shifted or shaded. making the color different might have been a better choice in that regards but i can see where you're coming from.
9 IS A WINNER!
ReplyDeleteI think #9 deserves 2nd place but that's just me
ReplyDelete#9 is amazing! It's very detailed. And it's very neat!
ReplyDelete#1 is great too.
#11 is nice. But the background should be something rather than just red. If you know what I mean.
Personally, I like number 4...
ReplyDeleteAlthough that's kind of biased.
Hello, I'm from Russia, I do not draw very well.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pity that I missed the competition.

Good result?

9 for da win. Coolest flag ever sense the Confederate battle flag stars and bars!
ReplyDelete9 for da win. Coolest flag ever sense the Confederate battle flag stars and bars!
ReplyDeletePersonaly thing if you drop the stars on #9 it would be a perfect flag for united equestria.
