I'b prefer stories to be grouped together, it's annoying seeing the same stories bumped up again and again (Especially when they stay front page for ages, which, annoyingly, always seems to be the case for "Fallout : Equestria").
I think either update system works fine. I just think it'd be a little easier to spot updates on stories I'm following if they had individual bumps, especially if it's an older one and the title isn't familiar. Although, we're obviously reaching a point where that will no longer be feasible.
I say change the update procedure now. That way, by the time that becomes necessary, people will already be used to it and you won't have to scramble to switch over.
Id prefer this one (Yay, this one is winning so far!) Mainly because it gives each story its own time to shine :) There's only one or two fics I read (Fallout Equestria is one of them) but I still like seeing the new ones, or even the chapter additions on the main page :)
I think the nightly update would be the better, especially if you arranged it so the updating stories were all viewable, and the new ones had their own little spotlight so we are less likely to miss anything.
But I check back on EqD all the time...like within every 20 minutes. If there was only the nightly updates, then what? Only check back every 24 hours o,o
Wait, if all these go on the post, what will be on the front page?
I think the nightly update posts aren't bad, but one suggestion I'd make is to either add descriptions or images to the fanfiction bit. Cause if you're following a dozen fanfics, their names can escape you, but images and descriptions are generally a lot more recognizable.
I think there is some confusion. New stories will still be on the front page (right Seth?), but stories that are only adding parts (Fallout: Equestria, Memories, EoA) will be dumped into a nightly post on the day they update. This should give newer fanfics more time in the spotlight (and thus gather more readers), while still notifying people when the old ones are updated.
Or if people already understood that, then I really don't read comments well. :<
I kinda wished my story had stayed on the front page longer. It was posted after I'd gone to bed and off the front page before I woke up. Even the front fanfic page. I've come to the conclusion that the only way to get a bazillion pages views is to write epic-length, multi-part stuff.
It would be cool if you did a weekly/monthly compilation post of media and fanfics. Maybe have a once a week spotlight on highly rated submissions whose page views are low? I dunno. Just throwing it out there.
As you said, it saves a lot of time and doesn't force us to go through a bunch of updated stories. Having them all in your daily updates is a welcoming change of air. Good idea!
I'm all for the daily update thing, but instead of making it a regular post make it something that stays at the top and you just add things as they are added. Kind of a index for all the posts for a given day.
I'd like nightly updates. With the current way you see the same very long stories pop up all the time, which is pointless for the people who aren't following them.
How about bumping the stories once they're completed? I'm sure there's people who wait for them to be finished then read them in one go.
I kind of see both sides, but I would tend to think that what we have going now works fairly well. The real problem with not bumping is that often times some of the longer stories, even those that are not "epic" per se, if they aren't bumped, might be less likely to gain new readers.
Granted, it can get to be a bit much when certain stories show up night after night, but this could be remedied with an Idea that had come up earlier, a dedicated side bar for the truly "epic" longfics, that would get bumped in the sidebar, whereas fics that either get updated infrequently, or those with less than ten parts (that number can be played around with) would get bumped in the main feed....
A sigular update is actually rather more convenient than having to revisit this page every couple hours on the off chance that something new I'm interested is up.
I always get a bit sad when I see a new post on equestriadaily and then have to realize, it is only an update to a story I don't want to read or one that I have saved for later when the story will be complete. So yes, the normal updates of random stories do not deserve a bump in my opinion. A nightly post to collect all the updates will be more than enough; if it happens to contain one of the stories I read, I should be able to see it anyway.
I like the nightly update idea, then bumping it once the story is complete. At first I thought all new stories would be added at night, but now that I see that's not the case, I'm quite happy with it.
I still vote separate-but-interlinked website for all this. Unfortunately, this still requires some exceptionally good coding that Blogger might not even support.
Here's a mock-up of all this: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/fic/src/130618388765.jpg
And ponychan thread that may be suitable for all that and this: http://www.ponychan.net/chan/fic/res/13877.html
Perhaps a system in which the last update remains at the top of the page until the current one is uploaded? Or maybe a system in which stories are bumped to the top of a seperate list on the front page.
I vastly prefer update posts because the RSS feed doesn't re-display bumped posts, so I always have to obsessively check the main page for new installments of e.g. Fallout.
As someone who likes to write multi-part stories, I personally endorse giving each story its own post on 'release', and then putting further updates in a nightly update post, and then bumping the story post once it is completed.
I can sympathize with those who don't want to see an excessive amount of fanfiction entries on the blog. I personally try to get at least 2 or 3 chapters done before I submit them to this blog. Of course, that also leaves those who follow these stories wondering, 'is the next chapter out yet or not?' Knowing that I can submit each chapter as it gets done, without adding to the backlog of things waiting to be put up, is something I would really like to see.
Also, an idea. If it has already been suggested, I apologize. An idea I have to make it so that people can view the site without seeing all the fanfiction would be to simply put a NF (Not Fanfiction) tag on everything that isn't fanfiction? That way, people who want to see this site w/o the fanfiction could just click on that, instead of on each separate category? (News, Comic, etc.) (shrugs) I honestly admit to not knowing how much work that would cause, but though I'd toss it out anyway.
Regardless, many thanks to all of those who put their time into running this site. Your hard work does not go unappreciated!
Come home from work, and find not only my story posted, but also an idea of mine landing on the genius portion of the bell curve (instead of the idiot part where the majority of my thoughts land).

Where is the poll? I cannot find it to vote up the old way

ReplyDeleteShould be on the left side bar! You might have to enable noscript or adblock or something.

To be honest either system is fine by me. Though it would be a lot easier just to have a single update.
ReplyDeleteEven if he went with that bump in the night thing Fallout Equestria would be the one I would want to have by it's self cause it is awesome.

ReplyDeleteHow about one update on the main page. Then have them individually bumped in the Fanfics Section.
ReplyDeleteOr is that too much work?

Why don't you say "everypony" like a normal brony? :P

I really like this system a lot.

I like it this way, but with a minor change: Bump 6-star fics only.
ReplyDelete@Kits
ReplyDeleteSethisto, didn't you used to do a Weekly Wrap Up? Wouldn't that be a good thing to start again? *hinthint*
I'm all for the daily update thing, but instead of making it a regular post make it something that stays at the top and you just add things as they are added. Kind of a index for all the posts for a given day.
ReplyDeleteA table of contents for the day.

I second bumping long fics once they're completed. That's when I prefer to read them!
ReplyDeleteThere are too many fics I started that seemed to have died off.
@Thomas
ReplyDeleteI don't want to scare off new potential bronies with pony terms!
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteHey
This is a good idea
This might work.
I like the new system, as long as updates can be commented on... and I think they can so no problem there.
ReplyDeleteBumping upon completion is a good idea too. That way ppl who just want to read the completed stories can find material easily.
Sethisto....there's a lot of Anonymous xD

I kinda prefer the "bump" system for story updates, myself.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I don't like fanfiction, it just makes it hard to find anything else when it completely overwhelms everything else.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, someone go make a better version of fanfiction.net.
I can't decide, but it does seem to be easier to get into a story in progress if you see the entire story post bumped, rather than the title alone...
ReplyDeleteA sigular update is actually rather more convenient than having to revisit this page every couple hours on the off chance that something new I'm interested is up.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could vote "whatever makes your job easier, Seth".

ReplyDeleteWorking on something like that actually, though it's a learning process.
@Sethisto You are a pony among men, then. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI think everyone is confusing what is already in place with what everypony wants.
ReplyDeleteI think a nightly update system would be nice if you can find a way to mark stories with one/two letter tags.
ReplyDeleteEx: [N]=Normal, [Sh]=Ship, [Sa]=Sad.
That way, people that don't recognize the story by name (or did not check the site when it first came out) can get an idea of its content.
Perhaps a system in which the last update remains at the top of the page until the current one is uploaded? Or maybe a system in which stories are bumped to the top of a seperate list on the front page.

[BUMPED STORIES]
I think the nightly-update option will be friendlier to RSS/Atom users, because the updates will appear in a new, unread post.
ReplyDeleteI vastly prefer update posts because the RSS feed doesn't re-display bumped posts, so I always have to obsessively check the main page for new installments of e.g. Fallout.
ReplyDeleteWhatever's easier for you, they're both fine. Fanfic is only annoying when there's a whole bunch of fics a day,
ReplyDelete@Fire.Esper
ReplyDeleteI'd offer to code one myself, but damn do I hate fanfiction. Sorry.
Torrential Rains got it right :D
ReplyDeleteThe poll should have an option for nightly update + bump on completion
ReplyDeletethat method rewards completion instead of update, making writers more willing to finish stories instead of letting them meander.
OOOO0h. I know! I know!! why not put the bumped stories list in FANFIC instead of HOME?!?
ReplyDeleteAs someone who likes to write multi-part stories, I personally endorse giving each story its own post on 'release', and then putting further updates in a nightly update post, and then bumping the story post once it is completed.
