    5. Wow, you don't know what Okami is. It's the coolest game EVAR! You MUST get it.

    6. Okami is a game you need to play even if you don't particularly like the game just because it's probably the most beautiful looking game ever.

      ReplyDelete
    7. Hm... It's a strong opening, I think... I can only imagine that things will pick up when Amaterasu joins the main group, though I must confess I'm curious about one thing. Will Ammy still only be able to communicate through barks, or will she be able to speak to Celestia at least?

Cereal, I know you like the Luna tucking in Celestia picture. But considering this is Okami, I demand an Okami Picture get's attached to it. Thankfully, there was an amazing one highlighted in Drawfriend #56, as number 1 no less

      http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b0LBUbGTj4Q/TZ7F2DEuSbI/AAAAAAAADOI/g9dEqMrcJzg/s1600/my_little_shiranui_by_naira_wolf_satyr-d3dc1cd.jpg

I demand you put that one on as the image for this story, and I'm sure the author will agree with me.

    11. This is exactly why I don't associate with the word 'okami' anymore.
The first thing anypony thinks of is the game.

'Okami' was Japanese for 'wolf' long before the game was even thought of.
      Now, it's all
      "I like okami."
      "Which part?"
      "No, I like okami."
"I know, I like the game, too."
"I'm not talking about a freaking game!"
"Then what are you talking about?"
      "Okami."
"Yea, I like that game, too."

      ReplyDelete
    12. @Luna

Why not just say "I like Wolves"?

      ReplyDelete
    13. Because, when Japanese talk/write, they don't say "私wolvesの好きな".
Besides, it was a Japanese character, too.

      ReplyDelete
    14. But when typing in English, wouldn't calling wolves "okami" just be pretentious? Unless you're Japanese, in which case you'd just need a broader vocabulary.

In other news, I enjoyed the fic, but I expect I'll enjoy it more when Ammy shows up.

      ReplyDelete
    15. But this story "is" about the game... Also Kinda along the lines of what Tiroth said. I'm pretty sure many of the game players know that its a play on words for "wolf" and "god", and even if not I'm sure they understand that the game was not the first use of the word.

... but Tiroth basically nailed it already...

Cant wait to read more :3

    16. Does Okami stand for wolf in Japanese or a race of Japanese wolf?

I thought it stood for a mythical race of giant white wolves that were believed to be guardians / deities.

      ReplyDelete
    17. @Luna
Well to be accurate Okami means god, while Ookami means wolf. Its the slight pronounciation difference thats the cause. The wording is used to make many puns in japanese.

      ReplyDelete
    18. Deep Breath*

The Ó in Okami can be treated as an expression of awe, likely towards a powerful and divine presence. Kami refers to the myraid gods and spirts in shinto, so Okami, while meaning wolf if written in the traditional kanji (chinese chracters), also means, great god. At the same time Amaterasu, the sun god the wolf okami was based off, is called, in her full term: Amaterasu Ómikami, with literal translation as, the Great God of Heaven Light. The term Okami can be directly taken from the term Omikami.

    19. A crossover of my favorite game of all time and MLP:FIM? Here's to the first fanfic I've ever read.

      ReplyDelete
    20. Could even be an episode of the show itself if it weren't for the crossover.

      5 stars.

      ReplyDelete
    21. MLP needs more shinto's... they could declare fluttertree to be the guardian spirit of ponyville... "I'd like to be a tree."

      ReplyDelete
    22. never played okami. all i know is that it involves some wolf or something. the introductory paragraph at the beginning was useful, thank you. there are parts that seem rushed, such as the getting ready to go to canterlot, but if nothing happened then nothing happened. i really liked how Flutterhsy was the one that spoke to Luna. the element of kindness was well within her element there.

      it's a good start. had a d'aw moment too.

      ReplyDelete
    23. @Simbaro isn't it "Ohomikami"? either way you're right

      ReplyDelete
    24. Well written, everyone seems in character and such. Can't really judge the story properly until Ammy actually shows up, though. :P

      ReplyDelete
    25. Well this is already an okami fic out there (it's a crossover that isn't labeled as Okami so...), but this seems to be a totally opposite approach the other one took.

      ReplyDelete
    26. Im painfully reminded over that i have yet beaten my copy of Okami for the wii.... I cant even remember where i was or where i was heading! D:

      ReplyDelete
    27. Man, this is great so far! I can't wait for part 2.

      ReplyDelete
    28. Okami is basically a "Legend of Zelda"-type game set in mythological Japan, with graphics reminiscent of a classic Japanese woodcut painting. Oh, and you cast magic spells by freezing time and painting shapes.

Frankly, this game doesn't get enough recognition, and it's a shame that the studio that made it went under shortly afterward.

      ReplyDelete
    29. @Simbaro
Not *quite* correct. The O in "god" is a single syllable, while the O in "wolf" is two syllables (two characters in Japanese). It's hard to describe the difference in text, but they're obvious when you hear them.
Roughly, it's the difference between "Okami" and "Oh, kami". Close enough for a pun, but different enough to avoid confusion.

      ReplyDelete
    30. @Anonymous
Actually, Simbaro's correct - the honorific "o" ("great") preceding "kami" ("god") is long-held, while "okami" ("wolf") uses a short-held "o".

You just got it the wrong way around, that's all. Both of you are correct other than that.

      ReplyDelete
    31. I can see Amaterasu's arrival now...

Fluttershy: Oh my, what a gorgeous wolf. Are you feeling hungry miss wolfie?

      Ammy: Bark bark!

      ReplyDelete
    32. So you scrapped "Minus the Sun" and started a new story?
Although I somehow liked the other story, I fully support your decision! This one has much more potential, the ponies are more in-character, the plot doesn't seem to start by deus ex machina ('Oh no, suddenly everywhere is that scary black mist!')...
...and Luna is in it! *LUNA IS BEST PONY*

However, the rise or fall of this story depends on how well you integrate our favourite furball into the ponyverse and how the conflict isn't just some kind of recap of the Okami plot with ponies...

Okami will always be part of my Top 10 Best Games Ever.
I really hope you succeed in making this a great story!

    33. Next set of chapters is nearly done; I'd estimate its completion by this Sunday at the latest. Sorry for the wait, just trying to make sure it's as good as it can be, I hope everybrony will understand.

      ReplyDelete
    34. @AnonymousI'm still working out exactly how things will unfold; it's not easy given one world is full of rainbows and friendship while the other is beautiful but filled with hayloads of violence. I don't think it'll be impossible since Ammy isn't violent unless she has to be, but it certainly won't be easy.

    37. Okami is an adventure video game by Capcom, and it's available on Playstation 2 and Wii. It plays somewhat like Zelda, and stars Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu reborn as a white wolf that has the ability to paint things into existence. It's a masterpiece and a cult classic, and has recently received a sequel for the Nintendo DS.

    38. So, we have people who know of nieghter Doctor Who or Okami? *tsk*tsk*tsk* That simply will not do.

Doctor Who is a show on BBC that's had one incarnation or another since the 60's--- well, The Doctor has had one incarnation or another--- well, it's not so much incarnations; it's the same man--- well, not the same man, he just regenerates into a new body (which lets them change the actors as needed, but still have the same fudamental character).

He's a species called Time Lord (they were first, so "they don't look humanoid, we look Timelordian") that, if they can at least hold off after a mortal wound, can regenerate their bodies into a new form--- or in the case of the Doctor Whoof fanfics, new foals. As the name implies, they have master over time travel, via their TARDISes, which're grown, not built; they also have a policy of non-intervention, which the Doctor happily violates on a regular basis. The species' home planet is Gallifrey, but it, and all of the other Time Lords were killed off in the reboot (there was a break in production between 1980's untill just the end of this past decade) in an event called the last great Time War, which was fought against the Daleks.

The Daleks are a cyborg race, not robots; inside the salt-shaker-shaped shell is a mosterous genetically mutated entity, engineered to not have any emotion, not mercy or comprosmise; only hate remains; hate for anything that's not Dalek. They were created for the purpose of universal genocide, by the Kaled scientist Davros, who was corrupted by the fires of war in an ethnic clensing capaign on his planet, Skaro.

The robots with the strange antanae/halos, and eyes that almost looke like they're crying, are Cybermen; human brains sodered into a metal armor shell; in most iterations, they were the results of attempts of immortality and/or surival, or forced attempts of human evolution. They think like computers, so the logic that inorganic bodies that're free of race, gender, class, emotion, or diesase & death are superior is... well, logical to them, and they seek to 'upgrade' all of humanity to be the same.

    39. Okami~
Far away in the land of Nippon, in the era of myths and legends, a terrible annual ritual plagued a tiny village; on the eve of a certian full moon, the dreaded 8-headed dragon, Mountain (O!) of (RO!) Shadows (CHI!), called for the sacfrice of a maiden as appeasement, lest he destroy the tiny hamlet. In the nights before the yearly ritual, a white wolf, dubbed Shiranui, who was belived to be a familiar of Orochi, roamed the streets, as if in search of something. The swordsman, , tried to hunt down the wolf, but Shiranui always evaded him with it's swift moves and impossible agility.

On the 100'th anniversary of the dreaded ritual, Orochi's marker, a white arrow, struck the home of the village's most beautiful maiden, the sake-maker . This infuriated 'Nagi, who had a secret love for the fair 'Nami. Sneaking his way into Orochi's lair in the Moon Cave, Nagi challeged the demonic beast, sword smashing into scales for hours, but to no avail.

Thinking his hour had come, Nagi resigned himself to death, when who but Shiranui placed itself between the two opponents, growlsing at Orochi in defense of Nagi!

When Orochi breathed intense flame, a divine wind drove the inferno back; when Orochi lunged, fangs bared, a tree infused with the essence of Nature blocked his path; both animalistic warriors battled further, both to the point of exhaustion; Orochi's and Shiranui's magic both nearly spent. Nearly; with a mighty howl, Shiranui's howl broke the coulds to reveal the stunning moon.

Nagi seized the moment, and called upon the gods to stand witness, as the moon filled his blade with divine power; he rushed into the malestorm of Orochi's flailing necks, destroying heads and throats and severing the mighty collums, finally cleaving the last head with such a mighty blow, that even the carpacas of Orochi was split in two.

That night of the legend was deemed the most beautiful sight ever witnessed... but, as with most myths and legends, who're retold, evolved, and forgotten; the true story was far grander and stranger, reaching across all the lands of Nippon, to the depths of the sea, even reaching far into the past and onto the moon and the land of the Gods themselves, where the battles against The Dark himself clashed with fierce intensity.

And that is where the story only begins...

    40. I'm interested to see how Ammy communicates. I can only hope that she doesn't "talk through barking" or anything ridiculous like that. I really hope Issun (or more likely Waka) will be there to speak for Ammy.

Anyway, I absolutely love this story. It's the only fanfic I have ever read, MLP or otherwise (although I did read Cupcakes today). 5/5 stars!

Spoiler alert: That green-and-blue-glowing something is the Ark of Yamato.

    45. Hm, hm, hmm~

Perhaps more of the tale can be told.
*picks up a brush, laden with strange ink; like wind made solid*
*draws a sickle-shaped crescent, labels it with ウサギ*

Long ago, in a pale, dark land, there lived a tribe of rabbits with strange fur; most were silver on theri bodies, some green, some purple, but all had feathery, golden fur on their ears.

源 義経*a rabbit with the softest of steps*
One, who's coat was a pale peach pink, was gifted with eyes so sharp, that he could see the farthest star, and if fortune or tragedy was coming from it. He also was one of great courage and hope. One day, he saw across the dark ocean, to a land filled with other creatures on a land filled with blue-- but he also saw that there was some kind of peril approaching the land.

Calling upon his people, he wished to help this blue land; his people obliged, and helped craft a mighty boat, held aloft with the magic of their clan.

Had he been more aware, me may have noticed the lack of timidness in his lapine brothers and sisters, but the desire to help others occupied his mind as he sailed across the dark ocean...

Such was his sight and swiftness of his actions and feet, that he thought he arrived well before Darkness approached. There, he brought the ark and enshrined it, telling the people there of the danger that approached, and to use the ark to escape. He was praised for his generosity and bravery, particuarly by a beautful she-wolf.

天照 *a maiden, holding a sacred mirror*
Now, as courageous as he was, he did not feel afraid of the wolf, but a sense of comradery, as did the wolf with him; best friends they became, and they spend many days running freely across the plains, flowers bursting with pollen in their wake.

闇*an oncoming stormcloud, dark with malice*
But the day of reconing came all to soon; fires, buring with hatred, came down from the heavens. The rabbit looked, and realize in horror that the flames seemed to come in the direction of his beloved homeland.

He told the people of the blue land to run for the ark, while he ran to do what he could to halt the inferno, the she-wolf right on his heels. They both sensed it; the hatred was so strong, that it manifested a body; it was evil made flesh.

But, it seems destiny had yet for the rabbit and wolf to triumph, but had more tragety in store; for not also could they could not fight back the flames, but when he chanced a glance to the ark, he shook with horror at what he saw.

      後悔*the Ark, dripping with blood*
Somehow, hidden from his sight, the Darkness and it's master had stowed away on the ark itself, all this time. The rabbit's heart was in pain, as he witnessed the fate of those he befriended and tried to save; he could see their bodies be torn apart; his long ears could hear their cries, and through the bonds he made with them, he could feel their lights go out, one by one, afraid and in pain.

The she-wolf saw the rabbit's state, and saw that they could not fight the darkness now. She urged him to flee the blue lands. Sharing his guilt, she too knew things needed to be made right; they decided to follow the ark, and head for the distant lands of green...

    46. >>I have no idea what an Okami is
Quite possibly the greatest Video Game of all time. At the very least, one of the great contenders for "best PlayStation 2 game of all time".

I greatly encourage you to play it.

The author simply states an Okami, meaning the word.
I bet it's damn hard to write a fanfic about a game you never played!

    48. ^^
Isn't that Cereal's comment upon putting it up here? I've read through all the parts and I can say with good confidence that the author certainly seems to have played the game.

      ReplyDelete
    49. The end of Chapter 11 felt rather unfitting, like the author just decided to take a jab at a certain story for no other reason than he just wanted to.

      ReplyDelete
    50. I enjoyed it, but I felt the ponies came just a little too close to parody, and it seems that you haven't settled for how you want to use Fluttershy, seeing as she is just there in the background. Hopefully, there will be bits of plot suited for each pony in the future, not just Twilight and Rainbow Dash.

      ReplyDelete
    51. Just wanted to say Okami is my 3rd favourite game of all time after Ocarina of Time and Ico. Thank you for writing this fic, even if you can't complete it.

      ReplyDelete
    52. This is a very interesting story, however you made one mistake. In the latest chapter, when you are introducing the Gods that helped create the Pegasi race, you called Gekigami a saber when he is actually a tiger. You might want to fix that.

      ReplyDelete
    53. Okami is the game I replay every so often to remind myself that, for all the down-the-barrel super-realism shooters 8 and ongoing sequels that plague the game market, gaming is still a medium that provides an unparalleled immersion and should be supported as such. It's literally a game about a dog saving a world out of a twelfth century Japanese artbook by using magical powers produced by drawing funny shapes across the screen, and it's wonderful.

      ReplyDelete
    54. To whomever reads this:
I'm Melionos' brother. I loved this story, and when he stopped putting out parts, I pestered him as to why. He said he had "moved on to bigger and better stories to write." So in all likelihood, unless he is pestered by everyone in the MLP FiM community on MMO-Champion,(and even then he might not) he probably won't write any more of this story, which is enraging.
