ReplyDeleteThe whloe Non-Rainboom Alternate reality thing is seriously freaking me ut.
Man, that was a great read. I felt my heart plummet near the end, if that makes any sense.
ReplyDeleteReally liked it, makes Fluttershy look tough
ReplyDeleteYou guys know I can't modify seth's posts, right?!
ReplyDelete@Cereal Velocity
ReplyDeleteNo excuses. You're Cereal Velocity! Make the impossible happen and fix all the errors when people call your name.
I have well over 10,000 songs on my computer - video game or otherwise - set to random shuffle in Winamp.
ReplyDeleteWhen the flashback scene started, this just happened to play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiAtT-5B9is
I ALMOST shed a tear.
Wow. THAT is some DEEP stuff......imagine if that were CANON.....
ReplyDelete^ Damn.
ReplyDeleteA very good story. Loved the characterization. However, the italics made it a bit hard to read, and I don't exactly get the significance of the scribbly cutie mark. But it was very good. Is there a follow-up coming?
ReplyDeleteWell done.
ReplyDeleteApparently, I'm not the only one that uses italics to denote flashbacks, heh.
Pretty good.
ReplyDelete@Homfrog: The chaotic Cutie Mark is meant to suggest dementia - something like Paranoid Schizophrenia, clouding her true calling due to unstable thought patterns. Basically, I figured insanity would reflect in the Marks the same way purpose does.
ReplyDeleteAs for a continuation, I think it's pretty self-contained, but I am considering other psychological stories with other Ponies, now that Fluttershy's Caregiver Burden has been examined...
Very neat concept.
ReplyDeletewell done memory.
Is it bad I found her mother's crippling mind problems a bit funny? "DRAGONS. DRAGONS ARE EVERYWHERE."
ReplyDeleteAlright, onto a real comment, and I'm going to say I really liked the story. Solid characterization of all characters. Very interesting theory. And well written. I loved it!
@ Cereal Velocity
ReplyDeleteBut you're cereal! You have no excuses for this! Don't make me bring up the bad dragon thing again!
So... Fluttershy's mom's cutie mark is an animated mandelbrot set? cool.
ReplyDeleteGood read indeed.
ReplyDelete@Pinkamina Diane Pie
ReplyDeleteBad dragon...
oh god cereal what have you been getting into?
I like the naughty, bad dragon because cereal does too.
ReplyDeleteBad Dragon...I know of that site...oh my poor virgin eyes, they is scared for life.
ReplyDeleteStupidity aside, great read and liked how ya tied it all together smoothly. =)
There are too many ponies watching this...
ReplyDeleteWHY??????
Will there be a follow up?
ReplyDeleteThe story wasn't good. It doesn't fit in with the real series or character. The story doesn't give any reason why Fluttershy would be so hell bent on being loved. If she grew up under those conditions, I think she'd be more of a shut in then Twilight.
ReplyDeleteAnother major issue is how Fluttershy got help for her mother. Someone as shy, and supposedly tormented as her, wouldn't be able to do that. If she did, it would suggest that she over came the trauma.
@Anonymous:
ReplyDeleteThe story was meant to imply that Fluttershy has at least partially inherited her mother's instability (hence the itching Cutie Marks), but that the wonders of surface life and her loyal friends help keep it at bay.
As for having her mother taken in, Fluttershy is depicted as having endured as a caregiver for years before making the decision that the real act of kindness would be to get her mother the help she needs. She only needed to "overcome" her anxiety for a brief moment. Recovery isn't like an on/off switch - it's not all or nothing.
What'd she have her mother didn't? Friends?
ReplyDelete^ Having someone to bare your soul to is a great way to get your problems off your chest.
ReplyDeleteAlso, friendship is magic.
Oh my god, don't you guys remember when cereal made the supposedly sexist comment, and everyone got really mad? THAT is what I was talking about.
ReplyDeleteYou guys have been reading WAY too many clopfics!
I like this story. Aside from generating alot of sympathy for Fluttershy, it explains quite a few quirks of her personality:
ReplyDelete** SPOILERS!!! **
Why does she know so much about sewing? Because she had to make clothes as a kid for herself and her mother because they had no money.
Why does she have a dragon phobia? Because it's something her mother drilled into her since she was a foal.
Why was she visibly older than the other kids at Summer Flight Camp? Because she attended late because of slipping grades caused by the stress of taking care of her mother.
Now I gotta wonder though... where's the deadbeat Dad???
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteFunny how we don't see positive male role models in cartoons or series recently.
I know it's like that IRL at times, but not always.
Nothing would make me happier than seeing RD or Rarity's father being a good influence on them.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteHe had the right idea to run away but he should havetaken his daughter with him.
Whoa.
ReplyDeleteIgnore other posts, this hit a little too close to home.
Characterization spot on ... *shudder*
PLEASE WRITE MORE
Still waters run deep they say, and this is why quiet girls creep me out. Then again, my own reaction to being upset/angry/sad is to get real quiet myself. If I'm yelling, I'm fine. When I get quiet, run!
ReplyDeleteDad left because Mom was unbalanced.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it does hit close to home. But that's why I love this fandom so much.
Chillingly plausible. Very nice work there Saddlesoap :).
ReplyDeleteThat was very deep. This is one of the most emotional stories I've read here. I liked how you linked the events of the story to many of the things we know about Fluttershy.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your wonderfully constructive comments (and praise!). This truly is one of the nicest fandoms ever. Expect more psychological stories in the future - I've got the writing bug (parasprite?) now...
ReplyDeleteOh man. That was creepy. Especially the itchy thing. O.o
ReplyDelete@Saddlesoap
ReplyDeleteDude, you are good at this. I work with dementia patients, and I see how it affects both the victims and their families. Nailed it.
@Doctor Dapples:
ReplyDeleteI'm flattered!
I'm in a different industry now, but it's nice
to see my Psychology degree isn't too rusty! :D
Uhh, why is this in the shipping section in the archive?
ReplyDeleteOh dear.
ReplyDeleteWhile the shipping and all that is nice, and doesn't detract from the story, was hoping this series would remain ship-free.
wow, just wow.
ReplyDeletechills man, I got all the chills all over. your stories are so... accurate... seems to be the only word I can think of to describe it. looking forward to reading the rest.
ReplyDelete"Page does not exist" so probably google effing up.
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
ReplyDeleteI am switching to Fanfiction.net.
The new links will be ready in a day or two.
Aaannnnd....BLAM!
