Very cute, You feel sorry for Cheerilee as she goes through her mid-life crisis, but things work out, this would work pretty well as an episode focused on Cheerilee or something, I think.
ReplyDeleteBECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS DON'T DANCE AND IF THEY DON'T DANCE WELL THEY AIN'T NO FRIENDS OF MINE!
ReplyDeleteSo I hit the embedded YouTube link which started playing the song in the background, and I don't know if it was just serendipity due to my reading speed, or if it was all planned, but everything lined up perfectly, the descriptions of the changing backbeat to the music, to the lyrics, to the pauses in vocals to describe the scene. It just flowed effortlessly, and I'm slack jawed impressed with the author for having the written word mesh with a video so flawlessly.
ReplyDeleteJolly good show.
It was like watching an episode of MLP. It even had a moral to go with the story. Very good read.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm loving Cheerilee more and more. I thought the continuity between G3 Rainbow Dash and G4 Rainbow Dash was brilliant! Nicely done all around.
ReplyDeleteI want this to be an episode! If only because I have no head for music and want to see this awesome dance number described.
ReplyDeleteYou keep on writing stories that would make perfect episodes... What higher praise can I give? Brilliant! And I have a new running song too :)
ReplyDeleteThis story hit me harder than it should have...
ReplyDeleteBeing born in 1980 and being reminded of one of the songs I grew with has shaken something inside me tonight.
Oh, how I really wish I could find an 80's disco and gather some friends to go dance the night away...
I'm pretty much going to read anything Conner Cogwork comes up with after that one two punch of great fics.
ReplyDeleteIt's like reading an episode script from the show.
This story was amazing. I agree, I wish this WAS an episode!
ReplyDeleteOh man. Oh man. AMAZING. Dropping in Take On Me and Safety Dance was just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww.
ReplyDeleteTwo words
ReplyDeleteHEAD
CANON
Again, I'm amazed that you bronies like the story so much. Makes me feel fuzzy and... PONY inside. Can one feel pony inside? If one does, is that medically sound?
ReplyDeleteThis story is actually the FIRST one I wrote and submitted to EqD, before starting on the Accent one. Turns out, it fell into Seth's spam folder for some reason. Ahh well, it still managed to find it's way up. Many thanks for posting, Seth!
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYou honor me with that, sir. When I first started writing this story, I allready had that scene firmly planted in my mind. I'm very glad that you enjoyed the experience. ^^
@Conner Cogwork
ReplyDeleteIt's 4am and I blame you for my nostalgia trip (I loaded a folder with the best 1000 80's into my playlist and can't stop listening...)
And for reminding me that, being 30 years old I shouldn't feel like I have already spent my life and shoud move my ass and EAT THE APPLE PICKIN' WORLD FOR BREAKFAST!!!
HAY YEAH!
(Leaves humming 'Europe - Rock the night')
Cheerilee, Big Mac, Rainbow Dash, and EPIC EIGHTIES. HAY YEAH. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm not even old enough to feel nostalgic about this, but the way you fit the pacing of the story to the song was brilliant. Good on ya.
ReplyDeleteSolid story. I really enjoyed it, plus it's great to see Cheerilee getting some love. I'll be looking forward to seeing more fics from you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I agree with the previous Anon who mentioned that the song synched with the pacing of the story. I had the exact same thing happen while I was reading -- the lyrics and the narrative pieces synched up just right, which was pretty surprising. It's the first time I've encountered it in a story that's used a linked soundtrack, so you get bonus points there regardless of whether or not it was intentional.
Yeah the song/reading syncing was great! Of course it only works on somepony with a specific reading speed... but anyway, fabulous writing and execution! It reminded me that getting close to my 30s isn't a bad thing!! I can (and do) dance anytime I want. :)
ReplyDeleteHello Conner!
ReplyDeleteI loved this story when I read it on Ponychan, it's great to see another Cheerilee fic and I really hope to see more of your stuff soon!
:D
I know a lot of people are saying they wish this was an episode. But I disagree. As an episode this would lose something vital.
ReplyDeleteNo, this is a perfect example of fanfiction. The combination of features that simply couldn't be done within the confines of the system. Too many copyrights, too much internalization, too much like a book, too many inside references.
Clearly 6 star material, but making an episode out of it would dumb it down.
Plus RDJ with would explain bunches about her complexes. I still say you have to explain Dash Senior...
@Alex
ReplyDeleteYea a little disappointed there was no VanHAYlen or The OATfield tho :D
Adorable story. I really dug lyra and bonbons, plus the RDJ bit was entirely hilarious. Great work and vert worth the read
ReplyDeleteLoved it, I loved how you had Cheerilee dress in her old '80s garb referenced in the show. The song choice for the dance scene was great, and fit well while reading it. I also enjoyed Cheerliee's interactions with her old friends like Big Mac, and new one, as well.
ReplyDeleteA very well-done fanfic. I hope I'm not being to overly-generous, but I give it 5-stars.
Another story worthy of an episode.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up.
I particularly enjoyed the dragon and Rainbow Dash Jr. parts, not the mention the whole 80's theme. Now you gotta do a story where her nightmare of Rarity meeting her mom comes true.
A great story! And yes, the music and the story synched perfectly for me as well. Multimedia pony fic! :D
ReplyDeleteI swear, ponies with 10 seconds of air time make the best subjects for stories. That was a fun fic, good read! Time to break out the 80s music mixes...
ReplyDeleteI approve wholeheartedly! One for the oldbronies :)
ReplyDeleteMore Safety Dance!
Aww, I loved this story. Normally I'm more on the FlutterMac side but I could totally buy CheeriMac. Very cute tale!
ReplyDeleteThis story has been removed from Google Docs due to a ToS violation, and I want to read it. What do I do?
ReplyDeleteYeah! I want to read it too! :(
ReplyDeleteHaha, it's working now :P
ReplyDeleteReally fun story. I really liked how you got the music to line up perfectly with the story; reading and listening to a song is pretty creative, and a lot of fun.
Good work!
Augh! Both this and the Applejack one by the same author taken down for Terms of Service nonsense. I was really looking forward to reading it, too. ...Anypony save a copy somewhere?
ReplyDeleteApparantly, somebody flagged the published document links for some reason, for content reasons. I've dismissed the one that popped up on the Cheerilee one, but on the Accent one, I've submitted a request for review.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, the both of them are still up and present, and I've had no trouble accessing them, though that may be simply due to me being the originator. Though the comment from TotalOverflow seems to indicate they're working.
In the FF.net version, "Echoing Green" is not a link to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5_d0gabeYA as it was in the GDoc version. (And no, the GDoc version still isn't working for me.)
ReplyDelete@Storm
ReplyDeleteI'm awfully sorry about this whole thing. Yeah, I know FF.net doesn't do links in their stuff. I'm hoping the name of the band, and the title of the song will be enough to allow curious folks to find the song on their own. In the meantime, I'll see if I CAN put the link in there somewhere,
@Conner Cogwork
ReplyDeleteEh, no worries, mostly I wanted to make sure the link was kept somewhere. I'm not shocked that FF.net is link-unfriendly.
Also, the GDoc version is working for me again.
I have to admit, I had no idea what to expect from this fic, but I never could have foreseen that it would be this sweet. Thank you for the excellent read and the giant grin on my face. The perfect end to a long night.

How Cheerilee Got Her Groove Back
Okay, if this fic actually became an episode in the future, Rainbow Dash fans everywhere would cry tears of joy when seeing their favorite pony tear it up on the dance floor the way that was described in the story!
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash [senior] always dresses in style!
ReplyDeleteThe song was just amazing and even how it corresponded to the story was perfect, Worth the 6 star rating in it's entirety ^-^
ReplyDeleteThis should be an episode, seriously.
ReplyDeleteLONG LIVE THE EIGHTIES!
I played a club version of Safety Dance while reading the big climax.
ReplyDeleteI'm not ashamed.
Awesome. Like others, I just so happened to read it at the perfect speed to sync up with the linked tune, which made the scene that much more epic in my head. I'm not even a party-goer, nor have I ever been to a club, but I got the feeling and loved this all the same.
ReplyDelete@zaptiftun
ReplyDelete...You sir, ask for Derpy Hooves to have dialogue. Right now.
as long as zecora stays single im fine "for the zecora armada"
ReplyDeleteI honestly just read this because of the upcomming Big Mac Episode. Glad I did, its great :D
