I really hope for that commentary. And I will actually go out and buy those dvds. I want to support the show in any way I can, and this is one of the easiest.
It's sad to say, but kids' shows rarely get good extras they're released to DVD. The conventional wisdom is that kids don't care about extras, so the studio just slaps the episodes on a couple of discs, throws in motionless silent menus and ships 'em out.
That said, the MLP crew are very much aware of the show's older fans, and probably know that we would be much more likely to buy a box set than little kids would be. So hopefully Hasbro would have the good sense to aim the set at us and give it lots of new content.
Season 1 DVD/Blu-ray at a normal price, for families with kids to watch.
Season 1: Brony Edition DVD/Blu-ray with commentary and etc, in a metal case for a higher price, so the older of us who can afford it can support the show without buying the toys.
Great news, for sure! I am definitely hoping this is a complete season set with all 26 episodes, as opposed to a single-disc "Best Of" release (blegh, no thanks).
I also agree with the above - special features would be wonderful, commentary especially. Perhaps an image gallery with Lauren Faust's original art sketches, among other things.
Please please PLEASE do it right the first time, Hasbro? Please?
mlp season 1 brony edition contains a blue ray in a tin case for collectors a commentary from Faust a mlp soundtrack cd with all the songs and a luna toy all in one box set
HASBRO IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN YOU WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!
seriously I dont care about the price if they made that I would get a job just to pay for it if I had 2
I really doubt we'll see some decent extras at all. Maybe a 'How-to-draw-pony', a bunch of commercials, previews of other shows, maybe a letter by somepony... Scenes and clips from the recording studio, I don't see as something getting on the disk, as there are times the actors will flub Y-rated dialog into something PG+.
@Anonymous Bonus points if it's actually called "brony edition". How's that for a shout-out? If nothing else there has to be a special feature, 10-20 mins of the team talking about their reactions to the show's popularity on the Internet. Can somebody get that suggestion up on Mrs. Faust's DA page for me?
Anyway, I don't see why a blu-ray would be so unlikely. It's animation, so it should be very easy to get the 1080p image ready. If it's just a question of sales, all they need to do is put some extra special features on it and the brony community (probably tens of thousands of fans) will snap it up over the DVD release.
*dramatization* Cashier: Find everything you needed? Me: Eeyup. (cashier eyes MLP:FiM season DVDs) (cashier looks at me with a confused stare) (cashier looks at DVDs again) (cashier scans the DVDs) I leave store without saying another word. I drive home jamming out to cupcakes remix with the windows down. Friendship is magic.
1. This had better be Blu-Ray. Seriously. It's 2011, why are people even asking for a DVD now?!
2. I would gladly pay an extra $10-$15 at least if I knew that they were fixing the massive animation screwups. (Like, Applejack's magical disappearing hat, Rainbow Dash's phantom cutie mark, etc.) In fact, seeing as I already have all the episodes, this would probably be the biggest incentive for me to buy the set. Not that I needed one, really. I'd buy it anyway, but this is the time to fix all that crap.
3. Commentaries!! YES! I don't care so much about the "behind the scenes" with animators and stuff talking about their jobs, and that'd probably not go over so well with Y-rated content anyway. But by Celestia's hoof, I want to hear pony commentaries!
This is weird... Did ED lose my comment? It was up, and now it isn't. Oh well, long story short: "brony edition" is an awesome name, we need an interview with the crew about their reactions to the Internet fanbase, and the many, many bronies out there would definitely spring for the blu-ray if they put on some additional features.
Hasbro releases the DVD's substandardly, like they do with the toys. Things go two ways:
1. Bronys don't buy them and Hasbro assumes we don't care enough to support the show and keeps releasing sub standard toys and products.
2. Bronys buy them and Hasbro assumes we will buy any shit and keeps churning out sub standard toys and products.
These are the only options. Let's face it everypony, Hasbro hasn't listened to us yet, nor have they made any real concession for the brony market, so it's obvious to me that the DVD's are going to be less than stellar.
@chinlamp how can you fuck up boxset? i just want to support the episodes in a tangible way (i.e. not buying itunes episodes). i'd like to be able to have them and not worry about them disappearing from youtube :). a lot of people should just chill out i think
"This had better be Blu-Ray. Seriously. It's 2011, why are people even asking for a DVD now?!"
Because not everybody has enough money to buy a Blu-Ray player and sell all their movies and buy them back at twice the price. (assuming all the movies even have Blu-Rays)>.>
I almost want them to be Blu-ray only, just to fuck with people.
But that's not gonna happen ever. Still, this shit better come out on Blu-ray. I'm used to obscure old Japanese silent movies being released only on DVD, but this, god damn it...this!
Commentary from every awesome person involved in the show... Lauren Faust, Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain, Cathy Weseluck, Nicole Oliver...everyone of the major people...
Behind the scenes on how they did all of the show would be great as well, showing how the flash program worked for them and stuff...
I want to have a copy of all the episodes in my hands for when I don't want to look at a computer screen. DVD/Blue-Ray please!
Chinlamp really hit the nail on the head - I will be VERY surprised if we even get a box set containing all the season 1 episodes. If they release something like this I will buy it and recommend you do the same to support the show.
Most likely we will get some carelessly slapped together 3 episodes per DVD garbage made to sell for $9 at WalMart that negligent parent buys at the last second at the counter to "keep the kids mouth shut for a while".
Normally I dislike in-character commentaries, but I wouldn't complain so long as they were well-written and were in addition to regular commentary.
Anyway, regarding the price of blu-ray players: it's an extra $60 for a blu-ray player and I don't buy blu-ray movies above $15, period. TV series, obviously, get to go for more because they have more content.
You don't HAVE to go re-buying all your stuff just because its on Blu-ray.
Though I guess in my case, since I own well over a thousand discs and most of them simply haven't been upgraded to Blu-ray, its a lot more obvious to me.
That's my fear right there, Hasbro half asses it like everything else up till now and doesn't even give us a season box, just loose discs (think Spongebob DVDs.)
I will say this much though, everything Hasbro has done till now could be forgiven if it's a case of them having made all the product before the fan base existed. The toy line would have had to have been made at the same time as the show and at that time they were producing toys for young girls and the rehashed G3 toys probably seemed like a good idea for saving money. Once the fan base exploded like it did there was no way they were just going to junk the already produced toys so they just continued releasing them.
Now is hopefully the time Hasbro will show us there stuff, they know we are here, they know we have money, and they know we want what they have - ponies.
P.S - yes I am aware Spongebob has season sets but there were near a dozen loose discs before the first came out, I do believe it was the very vocal fanbase that caused it to happen at all
They've been replying with "Stay tuned" to everypony asking about DVDs at the Facebook, and practically every question about future products, too. I think that's just their standard answer, so it might not really mean anything.
@Anonymous That's for the iTunes season pass, not a DVD.
Sadly Apple's idea of HD is only 720p instead of 1080p, and they've drained the colors from the episodes. Plus it can be a pain working with their formats.
I would pay £500 for a Blu-Ray box set of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 1, especially if it contained Faust/Thiessen, voice-actor and in-character commentaries (and PLEASE render the 1080p masters properly, it's vector so it's hard to mess this up).
I think Hasbro will sell the rights, seeing that they aren't really in the home video biz. Shout! Factory (a company known for giving nostalgic TV shows decent DVD releases) seems to be their current go-to distributor. Though I have a feeling they'll try to release Transformers Prime first, especially with the new movie coming out.
Yes, Hasbro had already made the molds for the FIM product well before the series was launched. See hxxp://www.flickr.com/photos/paulnomad/sets/72157623305188023/ (replace xx with tt) for pictures taken at the 2010 Toy Fair. You will see the gift set with a prototype _white_ Celestia (not pink). The 2010 Toy Fair was in January, nearly ten months before the premiere of FIM. Maybe at the 2012 Toy fair we'll see if we have influenced Hasbro's product line. ^_^
Why does it 'have' to be on blu-ray? In fact, if it's blu-ray only I won't be getting a copy as I don't have a blu-ray drive. It was an extra, like, eighty dollars and the other hardware was worse, so.
Anything that's released to Blu-Ray is also released to DVD, so what are you even talking about? Companies know not everyone has Blu-Ray; nothing is ever released to just one format.
That's why some people (those who do have Blu-Ray players) are pushing more for Blu-Ray than DVD, because DVDs are already pretty much a sure thing. Blu-Rays aren't for sure, and the more people who let Hasbro know there's interest in them the more likely it is they'll release Blu-Rays too.
I hope they don't release FiM S1 like they did TF Animated. They trickled out the episodes into different bundles, with the opener in its own bundle. (I wont mention how they ditched S3 DVDs completely)
Please, just all episodes. One box. Exclusuve Bic Mac Fig. ;)
I'm liking the idea of an in-character commentary track. It reminds me of this feature on the R.O.D.the TV dvds were they had the main cast do fake previews for up-coming episodes only having a few screen images and a title to go on while voicing in character. An OST CD, design sketchbook, "making of" video, creator commentary, gallery and a sneak peek teaser trailer would certainly make my day.
TF Animated..grrr don't remind me. The one season I decided not to tape off the tv because I figured they would at least put it on dvd. No dice. Loved the show but I'm still pissed at Hasbro and CN for that absolute fail.
Maybe we should talk this thru... what's the worst that could happen if your dad caught you watchin my little pony? Maybe you could convert him to a brony !
@Anonymous HAHAHA You clearly don't know my dad, no the man got annoyed that when I was 10 I liked Power Rangers and still do. I could not try and explain My Little Pony to him.
I make jokes about it, while still playing it off as something I legitimately watch and enjoy. My parents don't really care, occasionally joke with me about it
I'm gonna convince my dad to watch it once I get a DvD.
I look forward to commentary from Lauren Faust, but I'm actually more hyped for commentary from Daniel Ingram, and maybe from the voice actors who had to get into the roles of two different characters.
Especially all this talk about Shout Masters potentionally getting the rights to distribute it. Judging by their treatment of Freaks and Geeks, they'd be a very, very good candidate for a MLP:FiM DVD release. Shout Masters actually took the time to license all the respective music for F&G, and in some cases had 2 commentary tracks for each episode. My only complaint is that the menus for every DVD was a still picture that looped an audio file, but I could tolerate that.
I want commentary by every possible combinations of cast member and crew. In fact I want one from the intern who doesn't even like the show but got everyone coffee and they thought to reward him with this.
And, Oh Yes! I would definitely purchase a season box, then. Shout Factory would be good! I got the entire 80s series on DVD now. And while I didn't watch the original series, I've been coming to appreciate FiM more and more! That's thanks in part to Lauren Faust's effort on the series! She Loves it! Therefore she was putting everything she had into it to make it what it is! I got a Blu-Ray player with my last tax return. I'd be willing to shell out quite a bit of moola for at least the full DVD Box Sets, even though I Do believe that this may be one series that deserves full Blu-Ray treatment. Either set could be loaded with extras. I can think of very few other series that I would put on Blu-Ray! This alone, won't necessarily make it happen but if we put our voices forward, in a reasonable manner, Hasbro should know how much we support these ideas. Btw, (if you love Derpy Hooves, feel free to Derp, including for dvd sets). DERP!!! 9u6 ;3
I downloaded all the episodes 1080p, converted them, then burned them on a dvd disc :D Currently making a case for them. This box set though would be a great thing to have. Blu-ray hopefully, dvd's acceptable. Commentary, behind the scenes, and those weird movie games. Plus, it needs a pre-order and a t-shirt or toy needs to be included with that. A wii or xbox game would be fun as well.
When I bought a blu-ray player, I wasn't quite sure what I really bought it for, several seasons of anime and even a season of firefly made me feel good about it, but I still wasn't sure about the extra investment, but now, I know why such a device was purchased, it was meant solely for the reading of the MLP: FiM blu-rays......
I've been "staying tuned" for four months! What the hay guys!! I thought I could postpone those "Best of" DVDs I was going to compile. Now I'm going back to that.
@Anonymous Pony "in character" commentary (in addition to the other tracks is the best idea EVAR. Not likely, but it's fun to dream.
I will not buy the season 1 DVD if all Hasbro does is cram the episodes onto a disk and dump it in the impulse buy section of the checkout line. I can watch the bare bones episodes on iTunes. I'm essentially buying the DVDs only for the commentary.
Just from a bitterly cynical marketing standpoint, a separately released "brony" edition with a not-super-girly cover and a plethora of special features aimed at more mature viewers would be a pupular and highly sought after "upsell" item. I'm thinking something along the lines of what Funimation did for the Evangelion 1.11/2.22 DVD release (a great example of how to do a DVD release right), only with Ponies. Make it worth my while, Hasbro.
Well my kids love extras on their DVD's! My son is 5 and he loves to watch the bonus features for Disney Pixar Cars! My daughter 9 also! They are both huge MLP fans! I hope they ad lots of bonus features and commentary for them with deleted penciled scenes, they love those!

ReplyDeleteYes. Commentary. The whole cast. All of them. Twelve different versions. Make it happen.
ReplyDeleteWhat they need is the alternate episodes for The Cutie Mark Chronicles.
ReplyDeleteShut up and take ALL my money.
ReplyDelete~Scratch
Oh fuck yes I'll buy this in an instant.
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't make the DVD case or the DVD itself too girly or something ad get someone who actually knows the broad fanbase of the show to do it.
I want:
ReplyDelete- commentaries
- behind the scenes
- all songs in an extra section
- spot the Derpy
- free Fluttershy mini!!!
I don't ask for much. I remember that Foster's episode with Cheese commentary. Just one episode. Isn't much to ask, is it.

Just one question: Why isn't this inside my BD-ROM drive RIGHT NAO???
ReplyDeleteThis makes Applebloom a sad pony, because she wants it NOOOW!
I'm not getting my hopes up. I have a feeling its just going to be the episodes on a disc, judging by the "amazing" toys we have seen released so far.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Seth, but if there is ANY effort put into it, I'll buy it day 1. If it's just a port of the episodes on blue-ray/dvd, then I'll hesitate.
ReplyDeleteA DVD seems almost certain (eventually); I still doubt we'll ever see a Blu-ray though.

GIVE ME PONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteALL OF MY MONEY! SHUT UP AND TAKE IT!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteWhy does it 'have' to be on blu-ray? In fact, if it's blu-ray only I won't be getting a copy as I don't have a blu-ray drive. It was an extra, like, eighty dollars and the other hardware was worse, so.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteIf by "DVD" you mean "iTunes season pass"...
@Keiya
ReplyDeleteAnything that's released to Blu-Ray is also released to DVD, so what are you even talking about?
ReplyDeletePlease, just all episodes.
ReplyDeleteAn OST CD, design sketchbook, "making of" video, creator commentary, gallery and a sneak peek teaser trailer would certainly make my day.
TF Animated..grrr don't remind me. The one season I decided not to tape off the tv because I figured they would at least put it on dvd. No dice.
Loved the show but I'm still pissed at Hasbro and CN for that absolute fail.
I'm so confilcted on one hand I'd love to have the dvd on the other I don't want my dad catching me watching My Little Pony.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should talk this thru... what's the worst that could happen if your dad caught you watchin my little pony? Maybe you could convert him to a brony !
ReplyDeleteIs it odd to think we'd be more embarassed if our parents caught us watching MLP than walking into our room while watching porn?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous HAHAHA You clearly don't know my dad, no the man got annoyed that when I was 10 I liked Power Rangers and still do. I could not try and explain My Little Pony to him.
ReplyDeleteI make jokes about it, while still playing it off as something I legitimately watch and enjoy. My parents don't really care, occasionally joke with me about it
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna convince my dad to watch it once I get a DvD.
I would like a copy of the blu-ray too plz \(^_\^)(^/_^)/
ReplyDeleteI look forward to commentary from Lauren Faust, but I'm actually more hyped for commentary from Daniel Ingram, and maybe from the voice actors who had to get into the roles of two different characters.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, please! C'moonnn, Hasbro, DOOO IIITT!
ReplyDeleteEspecially all this talk about Shout Masters potentionally getting the rights to distribute it.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, the glorious things that could be done with that...!! MAKE IT HAPPEN. PLZ!!!! >8-D
ReplyDelete@Blueberry Muffin
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, not to mention an episode summary with some possible trivia guide!!!
And, Oh Yes! I would definitely purchase a season box, then.
ReplyDeleteShout Factory would be good!
DERP!!! 9u6 ;3
Whoops! I meant I got the entire 80s Transformers series on DVD.
ReplyDeleteDERP, Again, For All My Money!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I bought a blu-ray player, I wasn't quite sure what I really bought it for, several seasons of anime and even a season of firefly made me feel good about it, but I still wasn't sure about the extra investment, but now, I know why such a device was purchased, it was meant solely for the reading of the MLP: FiM blu-rays......
ReplyDeleteI've been "staying tuned" for four months! What the hay guys!! I thought I could postpone those "Best of" DVDs I was going to compile. Now I'm going back to that.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know how to make animated DVD menus?
@Anonymous Pony "in character" commentary (in addition to the other tracks is the best idea EVAR. Not likely, but it's fun to dream.
ReplyDeleteI will not buy the season 1 DVD if all Hasbro does is cram the episodes onto a disk and dump it in the impulse buy section of the checkout line.
Pretty Please?
How about extended episodes?
ReplyDeleteI'll be getting the BluRay of this mothafucka.
ReplyDeleteThen I will use my incredible compression on them.
Then I will release these online, hopefully under 1GB a piece.
If you agree to this, send me an e-mail!

@BlackWidowerIt's as simple as editing a video.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteWell my kids love extras on their DVD's! My son is 5 and he loves to watch the bonus features for Disney Pixar Cars! My daughter 9 also! They are both huge MLP fans! I hope they ad lots of bonus features and commentary for them with deleted penciled scenes, they love those!
ReplyDeleteBUMP! Where is the DVD set?

ReplyDeleteHmm yes quite..... *whispers with a straight face* "i swear to god i will sell all three of my precious antique cars and buy fuckloads of these dvds."
