We were going to do an OC pony mary sue competition, but judging by the outrage in that OC pony joke post a few days ago, that might not be the best idea!
What would you guys like to see? The friend off will be in 2 weeks on June 1st, as always, but we need something to do until then!
I've considered doing a banner competition, but I'm not sure how many could participate in a photoshop/art thing. I like to keep these open to everypony.

Bah, I love OC ponies. So long as they avoid Mary-Sueism, that is. Maybe make it centered around a single pony rather than a type of event? 'Do a creative thing involving X' with judging in the various categories, like various art-type-ones, various length-of-fic ones, et al. I don't know.

How about a Trollestia story event?
ReplyDeleteOr perhaps A Starting Line Competition, where you choose a random starting line such as:
"Rarity loved fine food, but that didn't mean she liked wearing it." And a story must be built around it.
There's always a "Mood" competition-Fanworks based upon a certain mood of story, from Happy to Sad to Angry to Serene. Stories meant to convey such emotions.
Or there could be the "Pony Storytime" contest. Write about a pony or several ponies making up a story for an audience, kind of like "Are you Afraid of the Dark?" but Ponified and potentially actually scary.
Just a couple of ideas. Use them if you like.

ReplyDeleteArcheology event. Have people bring up old fics or something that they feel deserves another chance to shine in the spotlight. Considering that most people don't dig up the archives for fics, an event like this would be nice every once in a while.

Don't know if you've done a "weirdest pairing" contest yet, but...that could be a lot of fun/horrendously terrifying. One of the two.

Another brony here who loves OCs! Honestly, they're my favorite part of the fandom! I love seeing how people delicately weave their characters into the cannon Equestria... and enjoy laughing at people who try to make themselves into Mary Sue alicorns. But all in all, it's fun. It makes me feel like there is something "human" about this community, even if it is made up of ponies. :D

How about an event where everyone passes around story pieces? Someone writes part to half of a story, sends it in to Seth or Cereal or both where it gets posted temporarily, and then it becomes 'first come, first serve' as to whoever writes the rest of the story or just another piece of the story to be sent along again.

Probably due to the amount of stories being sent in, you'd probably want to make the maximum word count for each part of a story around 1000 words...?

Maybe something revolving Trollestia or Trolluna would be good. Let's face it, these two are physical gods in their realm; of course they're going to have some fun at their subjects' expense. Why not capitalize on that?

ReplyDeleteHow about a found-art comic event? Basically, taking either screenshots from the show or fan art, add captions or dialogue balloons, and arrange them into a comic that tells a story. The challenge would be finding the right images to tell an original story in a comic format. That should be open to everyone - at the very least, you can copy pictures into a Google Docs document, and add text below each one for captions.

ReplyDeleteThis is kind of a lengthy, complex idea, but, a competition where all the writers write 1 sentence (or 2) for a fic and send them to Sethisto or Cereal. Then one of them will compile them and send all the sentences to the entrants, who then have to arrange them into a story (no or little changing of anything). Best arrangement wins!

ReplyDeleteA while ago, I came across a neat game on Ponychan where you randomly select a number, and whichever character is on that number, you have to write a story about them getting pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI know it sounds weird, and there'd probably be a few stories that come dangerously close to clop-fic, but I've seen some really sweet stories on it, and I'd think it'd make a great contest.
It could be similar to the 300 word story contest: a compilation of short stories on the same subject.

Sir Leadhead's idea isn't bad, and would sure give me popularity to my jfk pony video (how nine minutes of pinkie pie jumping, which i spent two minutes on, and that video which i spent 2 hours on, have the same amount of views, I'll never know) But politics are a little dangerous. I still like the luna vs celestia idea :D Then again, that seems more long term than short term, and i could also see arguments breaking out over it x,X

I don't know about the other Anonymous bronies, but I don't really care about actually COMPETING in any of the competitions. I just love SEEING what the community comes up with rather than actually DOING any of it. As long as at least a couple dozen of the community can enter an art/fic/PMV competition, I'm more than content with just sitting back and soaking in their creative output...

Whatever we choose, I'm all for more general competitions; fanfiction is good, but I'm not a great writer, and I wanna participate.

ReplyDeleteWrite an episode competition. Doesn't necessarily have to be in a script format but has to be a story that would conceivably be an actual episode of FiM.

*Has to be 22 minutes long so it has to be no more than 22 pages (from what I learned each page of a script represents about one minute of screen time. That just what I was taught.)
*Has to be TV:Y (EI) or the Canadian, European, Australian equivalent. I don't exactly know how many countries this airs in but hopefully y'all get the gist of it.
*Doesn't necessarily have to follow a continuity it can be a stand alone episode.
*No OC's and designated background ponies stay in the background. However if the background pony has had lines in previous episodes then only those ponies are aloud to have no more than one short sentence of dialogue. Luna is an exception.
*If you are going to ship keep it with in the format of the show, in other words keep it clean, innocent, and I hate to say this because I am strongly pro LGBT but keep it hetero. Until our Lord and Mistress Lauren Faust says otherwise the ponies are straight.

Would not be able to work without an established internet connection...which would resort to using video games even if those said video games are board games. There are also logistical problems as there will be too many people playing at once.

Too much speculative fandom is actually bad for the community as a whole. Especially if Season 2 has some things that contradict any made ideas. I like the artistic part, though. Just no "OC" and it would work.

Besides, I'm a two decade D&D veteran, and am in love with Faerun (Forgotten Realms setting). The thought of fleshing out Equestria to the extent that WotC has fleshed out Faerun makes me giggle with unbridled (pun intended) excitement!!!

Rarity shook her head fearfully. Suddenly, Fluttershy's skin turned a dark green color and she grew to the point where she was bigger than two Big Macintoshes combined. "Fluttershy Smash!" The new, green, enormous Fluttershy yelled as she kicked Rarity. Rarity went flying and hit a tree. And died. The end.
All this talk of Mary Sue OCs is tempting me to write a fanfic in the style of "My Immortal" which might be the epitome of bad, bad, fanfic starring an incredibly blatant Mary Sue.

Since most of the characters are ponies, however, this could cause lots of argument and hate against those people who may or may not be referred to as "furries".
The banner contest seems like a good idea. Even if people don't have Photoshop, they could still get GIMP, or draw something and scan it.

And lastly, a side comment to JaxsonJaguar: it's great that you're pro-LGBT. This isn't an attack. It's just a friendly reminder that Rarity is the only pony to have expressed romantic interest in the opposite sex thus far, and Twilight's parents and Pinkie Pie's parents are the only characters thus far to be shown in hetero relationships. Lauren Faust's comments on the subject of Rainbow Dash's sexuality were deliberately ambiguous. Therefore, hetero is not *necessarily* the default and should not necessarily be the rule.
write a story one line at a time, community-wide. if multiple lines are written in response to the same one, first line wins and is kept. could be epic.

Equestria Daily Scavenger Hunt? You make a list of things to find.
ReplyDeletePictures, specific lines from fictions etc. You make a big treasure hunt out of it on things that can only be found on Equestria Daily. Each item somehow has a clue to the next thing to find.
I guess I could throw some examples. You have a picture of doctor whoofs and Derpy and the clue is "Page 1 Line 4 about Derpy's cutie mark." Which would lead you to bubbles Page 1 Line 4 whatever and it might lead you to think about baked bads or something. Just an idea.

ReplyDeleteThere have been some really great ideas in these comments, but I like that this one would encourage people who are creative but not necessarily into drawing or writing. (Like me.)
The only thing is that it would require a longer deadline than other events, but there would be a lot more freedom for the participants.
We could call it The Equestria Craft Show.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarification. I was just trying to add to the difficulty of writing a script that could be made into an actual episode. You have given me an idea though, perhaps an addition to my idea as a whole. Here it is...
If you are going to make a script with an LGBT theme keep it tasteful, positive, and educational. Maybe for example an LGBT couple moves into Ponyville stuff happens and by the end everyone has learned a valuable lesson about equality.
Shoot that could be an event challenge in and of itself.

I for one would love to see Pony Fluxx and Pony TCG.
2) I disagree. As long as speculative works fit logically with the established cannon, they should be encouraged. I mean, everything fanmade is just one fan's opinions, and something official comes up to prove it wrong then so be it. Besides, this is first and foremost a kid's show; the writers are probably never going to delve too deep into the lore of the world because they want the kids watching to use their own imaginations to create most aspects of the world. We should honor this and do the same ourselves.
I think the writing round robin idea is fun... and the banner competition for the artsy types would be good on that end too...
ReplyDeleteActually, by Team Luna v Team Trollestia, I was thinking more along the lines of a competition. A battle of arts, crafts (things made to throw other things at my sister's head count), song, dance, writing, etc.

ReplyDeleteSo why not show your Brony pride by supporting MLP in public. Pictures of you in a MLP T-shirt, Pictures of you buying MLP toys (Maybe even giving them away for a good cause)
Singing a MLP song in public. Just go out and show some love and tolerance.
I like OCs. I think an OC competition would be just fine if you added the stipulation that they couldn't be drawn from a template.

ReplyDeleteHow about something like one of those Round-Robin campfire stories? Everyone who wants to participate signs up in advance. we'd randomly pick the starting author and they write up to 1 page of the start of a story. Then they hand it off to any random person on the sign-up list and they continue it.
Maximum text-limit is 1 page of writing for each person, but it doesn't have to be a page if they can't fill that much.
By the end we could have one massive story compiled by all the active authors of Equestria Daily. :D

ReplyDeleteInstead of them passing on, turn it into Seth/Cereal, and they use the Magical Roulette of Pony to choose the next pony on the list, that way somepony doesn't accidently choose the same pony again or skip somepony.
Also would need to add some specifics about font and size if they're limited to a page.
What about writing a story BOUT A OC who is not a normaly scene creature like Diamond dogs trying to get revenge on the ponys or maybe equestrias version of dwarves (montain goats), or zebras.
