the only thing keeping my mind off ponies is school. its almost summer time. now nothing can keep my mind off ponies and the lack thereoff. this is gonna be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG summer :(
I hated this. I'm terribly sorry, but just... augh. So many parts clashed completely with the notes, so many parts were horribly mismatched regarding the timing.
I was going to sugarcoat my opinion a ton but with the praise this has gotten I feel I can be more blunt. I actually physically cringed at many parts of this. And yes, the intro is blatantly Sweet Child O'Mine. Guy could be a bit better at playing it, I think. Maybe it was too distorted for my tastes or something. Of course, I know upon subsequent listens it's never going to sound as bad as on my first listen-through, that happens with almost all songs I don't like, they grow on me to some degree, but I don't think I'll ever get to a point where I "like" this cover.
Granted, I'm just one brony, so this post is a bit of, as Mega64 put it, a "Shakespeare", where someone gives a way-too-long-winded negative review with some feeling of self-entitlement.
It's good but it can be improved the but the instrumentals clash with the vocals so much. At times their single to multiple beats off in the song good stuff though just needs a little more elbow grease.
BronyMke, as the creator of this song, I say you are spot on some parts. When it comes to EQing, I'm terrible. As for the guitar parts, I'm just more of a metal guy. I tried to keep this as "alternative" as I could. Thanks for your honesty, I'll be sure to improve next time.
Holy fuckin shit. Finally a "Metal" version of a Pony song that doesn't make my ears bleed and my soul weep. yea, I needs a lil work, the vocals do clash with the music style, but its still the best of the genre Ive heard to date. Serious wingboner goin here. Mebbe if you did your own vocals to the tempo of the instruments, it would sound more natural. I know how hard it is, I've got friends that have been trying for years to make a metal version of "Safety Dance", so tis not easy.
My advice? Get a singer working on the vocals. You already have the instruments down pat. If you get the vocals in sync, you will have a perfect cover song.
@Dethonator And thanks so much for the mature response to my criticism. I agree with Kujiro down below that the solo was pretty sweet. It would've been better if the vocals were re-sung (which is what I was expecting when I first went into this, to be honest), as they were it clashed a bit too much with the instruments for my taste.
Despite not liking this one, I eagerly await your next work and hope my criticism will help smooth things out a little. Make sure it gets on EqD or I probably won't see it.
I could maybe do vocals if I can find a time when my parents aren't around to laugh at me for it. I'm a decent vocalist, I mostly sing power/prog metal. I sound sorta like Geddy Lee from Rush.
I gotta admit this song will always have a special place in my heart, having worked retail most of my life. I know Rarity's pain, dealing with ignorant customers. It's the episode that made me like her character. If you can get a decent Vocalist, you have a solid cover song in the making. May be time to recruit!
Personally, I think the song style would fit a good masculine voice, being metal and all. Not many female vocals sounded well IMO for this genre, save Pat Benatar and a few others. But thats just my opinion.
A Rush-style vocalist would be awesome, I think! Still waiting or a true death-metal pony song though. That's gonna be hard to pull off, considering the subject matter. Man, What I'd give to hear Deathklok sing a Pony song, lol.
Okay, correcting everyone - this isn't metal. Rock, yea. Okay it became slightly metal at the 3:00 mark. Okay, solo at 3:30ish wasn't bad, but it's still Rock.
I'm sure you are aware of your timing issues ^_^ I liked it, but, typically, as a rock band/song the vocals aren't anywhere near loud enough, and the guitars are too loud!
Great effort though, as EVERYBODY has said, so take pride in that, and don't let people like me or pure haters get you down. I know how hard it is to compose something together and have it sound half decent. Take things to heart, and channel them into your future works!
I recognized the West Coast Sound style. 8^) I liked the guitar solo right after Rainbow Dash's "about 20% cooler". But some track in the right channel at the beginning was too soft and overall the rapidfire, melodic vocals didn't fit the diffuse and slow instrumental back-up.
@IncandescenceOh my God, you're right, too. Well, Rarity isn't much of the metalhead, so her vocals would be really awkward if I turned up the distortion and added blast beats. Oh well, that's what happens when you try to moderate a song about dresses with metal. If you guys really want me to, though, it is possible for me to remake this and make it 20% heavier by replacing the vocals with a lead guitar and screwing around with the chord progressions. Depending on fan response, I might do it. Thanks again, bronies!
There's a lot of things that don't match up very well, but even with that, I'm a sucker for rock type stuff, and it's pretty much a neglected niche in MLPFiM remixes. So this is nice by me. Though around 2:50, it seems to kinda... snowball? Doesn't make the first half any less enjoyable for me, though. Solid 3/5.
Extreme metal fan here! Don't listen to the bad comments, that was great. Of course a Rarity song can't be super heavy with her vocals, so now go and find somepony to add growling, then it's perfect ;)

Sweeeet, now I just need to get my acoustic cover up on YouTube!
ReplyDeleteI just came buckets.
ReplyDeleteMust remember to convert this to an MP3. And fucking blast it in a public place.
That....that was awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat....was AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteCan we haz Winter Wrap Up too?
Sweet Child O Mine opening?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
I never realized how much the melody in the beginning sounded like Sweet Child Of Mine until now.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting mix, but the flow seems terribly off to me.
ReplyDeleteGlad I wasn't the only one that heard that opening
ReplyDeleteThis works surprisingly well.
ReplyDeleteThank you guys, so much...*cries*.
ReplyDeleteEhh, it's ok.
ReplyDeleteThe guitar wasn't that clear, and it got off beat several times from what Rarity was singing.
But, ya know, it was a helluva lot better than what I would ever be able to do.
This is neat! My interest is piqued! Let the summer of awesome remixes begin!
ReplyDeleteNice. Just....awesome. I wonder how Winter Wrap Up would sound with your style. Probably awesome!
ReplyDeletethe only thing keeping my mind off ponies is school. its almost summer time. now nothing can keep my mind off ponies and the lack thereoff. this is gonna be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG summer :(
ReplyDeletePonies are METAL as FUCK!
ReplyDeleteI liked it!
Hmmm...can't decide. Greatest thing ever or GREATEST THING EVERRRRRR!!!!!1

ReplyDelete@Anonymous A lot more elbow grease. Just giving it a critique to add on to what I said earlier take this as constructive criticism.

ReplyDeleteStay tuned for my CMC cover, folks.
omg its sweet child of mine :O
ReplyDeleteA for effort, B for quality.
ReplyDeleteIt's grunge; that's what is supposed to sound like.
ReplyDeleteNot sure Art of the Dress was the best piece to cover, but an admirable preformance none-the-less.
The music... it's eating her with its sheer awesome! And then it's going to eat me! With its sheer awesome!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!
@BronyMike
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%. I was severely disappointed in what I heard. Though, don't get me wrong, great effort and nice save with the solo.

P.S. can we get an instrumental version? Like I said, instruments down pat, the vocals are the only detracting factor.
ReplyDelete@Thunderhoof Seconded

I am a terrible vocalist.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see more like this, personally. Felt a little off in some places, but loved the solo.
ReplyDeleteI must say, I LOVED the 20% cooler part... The song literally got 20% cooler as soon as Rainbow said that. Yay guitar solo!
ReplyDeleteWow, my comic was there! XD
ReplyDeleteI like this rock version. It can be better, but it's quiet nice as it is!
this could be awesome if someone would redo the words (someone who knows how to sings well)
ReplyDeleteI could maybe do vocals if I can find a time when my parents aren't around to laugh at me for it. I'm a decent vocalist, I mostly sing power/prog metal. I sound sorta like Geddy Lee from Rush.

This is Metal?
ReplyDeleteI think I like metal now. Makes me want to make my own...

intro remix from guns 'n roses YEA
ReplyDeleteThis one is much better, even without guitar solo:

ReplyDeleteYEEEAH! MONOLYTH ROCKS! \m/ \m/
ReplyDeleteThis be not metal, it be a very awkward College Rock remix.
ReplyDelete@IncandescenceOh my God, you're right, too. Well, Rarity isn't much of the metalhead, so her vocals would be really awkward if I turned up the distortion and added blast beats. ReplyDeleteBut if you guys really want a "real" HM remake, my account has a Thrash Metal rendition of "Evil Enchantress."
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of things that don't match up very well, but even with that, I'm a sucker for rock type stuff, and it's pretty much a neglected niche in MLPFiM remixes. ReplyDeleteSorry, but tl;dr this is horrible!
ReplyDeleteThe tempo of the drums doesn't match the rest of the song for example. And the Guns n roses intro sounds awful.
@Dethonator
ReplyDeleteThat does not sound like evil enchantress at all, the drums are always beat blasting and the shredding is horrible.
Could have been a lot better, but that may also be because I like the techno remixes better in general.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYeah, the should rename "Thrash Metal" to "Trash Metal."
LOL.

ReplyDeleteOoooh! Growling Rarity! In German no less! Could be way cool.
NEEDS MO COWBELLLLLLL!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought the original song couldn't get any better. Boy was I proved wrong
