Still, beyond that regal figure of hers, what secrets does she hide? What sadness is concealed behind those eyes? What does her heart yearn for?
The chains of "duty", for a monarch, can be cruel indeed...

ReplyDeleteSunny, sunny... I swear I can recall the name was used before in some other fiction property, but I can't recall where.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this. Really one of the best written fics I've read so far.
ReplyDeleteI guess it helps that I'm already in a melancholy kind of mood tonight.
To make a sad story impactful, you can't just have the character be sad at first, then putter about sadly, and then have a happy ending. You need to start out neutral and then sneak more and more sadness in as the story progresses. Then, just when the reader thinks it can't get any worse, you absolutely crush them. Bubbles and Three Notes do that very effectively.
ReplyDeleteI think the first person perspective and tense issues really hurt this one.

ReplyDeleteYou brainless sycophants need to stop giving praise for things that don't deserve it. The author may have tried their best, and kudos to them for putting themselves out there like that. That doesn't mean you should throw honest criticism out the door and blindly follow because you can't write a lick for yourself.
That being said, I hope the author continues to practice their craft, you can't get better without working at something.
A far better fic which is also in first-person can be found here. http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/04/story-twilight-sky-over-canterlot.html
ReplyDeleteIt's 20% cooler than this.

ReplyDeleteWhoa, whoa, whoa! Look, I totally agree with you that the story is flaws but the author still has potential but there's no need for name calling! I like to think we're a bit more mature and above that childish tactic.

ReplyDeleteYou know, I thought Out In the Cold and The Party Never Ended were overhyped, but that fic just takes the cake.
It's like you people just assume more detail = better fanfic. It doesn't. That fic is incredibly frustrating to read and in some parts downright annoying. It was obvious the author simply tried way too hard.
Pony fanfiction. Serious business.
ReplyDeleteThis is really very good.

ReplyDeleteAll fanfiction is Serious Business. Believe it.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteWhat would you say some of the best fics on the site are, Cottonmouth? What meets Cotton standards?
I'd especially like to know what shipping fics you like.
An interesting read.
ReplyDeleteI'm eternally (hah) fascinated by the depths and cruelties of time, and while it certainly is not the best, this fic really does try to illustrate it well...
In the end, all I remember and wish to know, is all about the End...
ReplyDeleteWho is this ''stallion'' ? Where is he ? ...could it be her 'Father' ? ...could it be a 'distant' lover ? Does the scene occur in dream... or did he reached the end of her life, finally resting ?
The end creates too many, unanswered, questions that need to find conclusion.

ReplyDeleteSome people really like to use their dirty-mouth for no good purpose, really.
If you can only say s***, then don't say anything and spare yourself some energy.
Try some camomille and politeness, and get some rest. Might improve your language.

ReplyDeleteWhy don't you pull that stick outta your flank and realize that people have opinions?
@nova_25
ReplyDeleteI'm actually setting that up for a shared continuity between some stories of mine. However, don't expect an answer soon. Chances are, they might be given in around...eight months, give or take.
Also, on this whole thing...well, to the anon who said the story lacked the "impact" of a sad story, they're probably right. However, I just don't like making any stories that don't have any glimmer of hope in them at all... plus the "sad" tag is just a tag. Although yes, maybe I should have made it more striking in some way. Gotta work on that.
On "Twilight Sky Over Canterlot"...well, I had the concept for this story for a few weeks now, but I had no idea how to write the story. However, after reading Twilight Sky Over Canterlot, which I enjoyed very much, I decided to make this a first-person piece.
In the end, all criticism to the story is appreciated, and I thank y'all for reading it! Just don't turn this into a flame war.
@New DCD
ReplyDelete>don't like making any stories that don't have any glimmer of hope in them at all
-For that... I salute you !
Too many author chose to go 'All or Nothing' with no form of compromise... Like, some 'sad' stories that are more like ''Go jump from a bridge'' stories.
...and I'm not saying that straight 'sad' is bad, BUT there's a difference between ''believable sadness'' and ''*normal* beings would be dead by now'' sadness.
