    5. Gotta say for a story about an OC character, I enjoyed it a lot.

    6. This is great! I love the format of her memories pouring out with a book. I love how her talent is magic, but revealed in the best way possible. Oh gosh. Probably the best story about an OC pony, and maybe one of the best on this website.

    7. @Phoe
I haven't even read it yet so I have no idea who is right

but at least exploring the child of one of the characters in the mane cast is a pretty original idea, to say the least. I think anyway.

Seth holy shit FIX THIS POST; it's labeled as news and you called Phoe a he.

    12. Phoe already knows how I feel, but I'll say it here anyways. This is a spectacular continuation to my little story, a possible variant on the wide open future that I left when I finished the bonus chapter. I couldn't have asked for better treatment of my scenario, nor Midnight.

      ReplyDelete
    13. wow that ending was sweet, very nice, gave me one of those just before but not quite choking up shudders around my back. Ill be honest, my eyes wanted some tears but i refused

    16. I like this story. For being a sequel to a fanfic, it's done really well. It has a good balance of emotions and tasty tidbits of humour thrown into the mix. =D

    17. So I finally sat down and read this whole series, completely ignoring my studies, and my face is now sore from the big stupid grin I contracted after finishing out in the cold.

      Confound these ponies...

Anyways, Phoe, thanks for putting the finishing touches on this story it really added the finality that I crave. And EsperDark, thank you for a kickflank story, it was an awesome read!

      ReplyDelete
    18. Yay! ^^ They used... a... small... portion of the pic I drew of Midnight's family... ;.; Waaaahhh, all that hard work on Princess Celestia and Luna and they got chopped off completely!

    19. Fanfic of a fanfic... we're getting rather meta here, aren't we? :D

But the story is good and heartwarming, in the best way, so who cares if it's meta?

(Okay, so I do, but I like meta stuff!)

    22. Cottonmouth has had it out for this series of stories since it was created. ^^' Good to see that he isn't just out to get EsperDerek, though.

    23. Wow this was a great series. Almost makes me wish there was more.

      ReplyDelete
    24. @Fleymevas

Heh, the funny thing about this is that this series has been extended at least three times. It first was only ever meant to be the original chapter, then three chapters, then three plus the bonus, and now there was THIS extension that was completely not me, so, yeah. What can I say?

      ReplyDelete
    25. I really didn't think I would like this, considering the pairing. I can't remember the last time I was so happy to be wrong.

      Brilliant work.

      ReplyDelete
    26. First let me say I really liked this story, especially how it was segmented in the form of different memories triggered by various things from her past. I swear Midnight has to be my favorite OC pony. Now if you all would permit me I'm going to nit pick a bit.
I thought some of the segments could have been a little longer. I think some of them could have been expanded on a little. While I understand why she would be drawn more to Trixie, I mean she did birth to her for crying out loud, I would have liked to see more scenes featuring just Twilight and Midnight.
Some more memories of Midnights school days would have been fun. Did she ever make real friends? Did she have any crushes? What would it have been like if she brought not just her friends but a potential love interest home to meet her moms?
Yeah just random little nit picks over all it was a good follow up to a good fanfic that introduced us to a great OC.

P.S. Do not read this while listening to the songs "I hope you dance", and "Butterfly Kisses." You will cry.

Oh, and on a side note I can't help but think that Twilight's curiosity would have driven her to cast "the spell" on Trixie so she could experience "child" birth. I can just imagine Twilight going though the whole thing then writing a huge book of a report on the experience.

      ReplyDelete
    27. I have to admit, I skipped over the "Out in the Cold" series originally, and only went back to read it when I saw that somepony liked it enough to write an entire side story about an arguably marginal character.

Now "Out in the Cold" is one of my favorite fics of all time, and definitively marks the start of my infatuation with the Great and Powerful Trixie. And "Shades of Midnight" is the perfect continuation - written with just as much inspiration as the original series.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again here, to me the version of Equestria described in this series is good enough to be canon.

Oh, and Phoe, all those adorable little short stories about Midnight as a filly? Tears of pure, fucking, joy were shed. Midnight is probably one of the best OC ponies so far, due in no small part to you! Thank-you so much!

...now if only we had some continuing adventures of Midnight. I would read that so HARD, again, and again. I know its a long shot, but like EsperDerek said, this entire series was originally supposed to be a one-off, so here's to hoping.

*sigh* Until then, I guess I'll just have to satisfy myself by reading the entire series again from the beginning. n_n

    28. I'd been waiting for this fic, and WOW! So worth the wait, even though it was only a matter of days. Phoe, excellent job! Heart warming, touching, AMAZING. :D

    31. You can't imagine how much I was touched by this story. Rose, I agree with you. I would give anything myself to read more. Even just another chapter. Please I havn't cried like this in a very long time. You are so talanted Phoe, PLEASE consider writing more, Please...

      ReplyDelete
    32. I doubt Phoe would be willing, it was hard enough for her to write this chapter, but...

Well, uh, looks like I'll take the hand-off again and start trying to run with my own ball once again. Or whatever sports metaphor works in this situation.

So, in other words, yeah, I'll be writing a continuation to this. Hopefully I can do as good a job continuing this as Phoe did continuing my own story!

      ReplyDelete
    33. @EsperDerek

... Oh my goodness. I don't think I have ever in my life had somepony beg me to continue a story. Certainly not with so much passion. I don't know what to say. I'm so touched that it meant that much to you.

As far as continuing it goes... I don't want to make promises. Writing this was very difficult for me. I will write more stories, certainly, and I hope that they can reach you even a tenth as much as this one has. And if I get the right idea, I might even continue this. But I don't want to get your hopes up. Let's wait and find out what EsperDerek comes up with himself, ok?

Thank you so much for reading.

    50. [SPOILERS}

The sad part didn't really do it for me. As soon as the locket gets mentioned you know what's going to happen, if for no other reason then that its been done to death in sad pony fics already. The reaction of Lotus is also not very realistic, there should have been a lot more time to grief, for both Lotus and Autumn.

Having said that, I do like where the end of chapter 2 is going. So I'll be keeping an eye out for chapter 3. Assuming there will be one that is.

      ReplyDelete
    51. @Baree
I'm aware of the overly cliche-ness of it, and I agree, I wasn't very descriptive of the two's mourning periods (as well as a few other parts). I left it mostly out by skipping ahead in time a few months.
I'll keep aware of things like this in the future, but for a first attempt I thought it was okay, albeit I was a bit too ambitious.
      Thank you.

Is that it or will there be more?

      ReplyDelete
    61. The continuity of Cries is still in the air. I ended it with plenty of room to expand, and I had planned on writing more, but I hit a bit of a roadblock with it. If I get enough people to ask me, I will most likely write another chapter in kind, but for the time being, consider it on hold, but not finished.

      2) ''until certain unfortunate events''
      3) [Sad]

...Let's see how insanely predictable this will be...
      (5min later)
Yep. So predictable that it's pretty bland.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's well 'written'... words are there... but not very much of anything else.

      It's super... standard.

    68. Loved it. Particularly the "letter from school" section. XD

For some reason, I could almost hear Celestia appearing to Midnight right after that confrontation and whispering "For the record, you ARE adopted, and that's terrible," to her... seems like something Trollestia would do, anyways...

    70. Thank you Mysterious Pony. I hate to disappoint anypony, but be honest, I don't know how long it'll take if it actually gets done. I'm so displeased with what I have so far I feel like I actually do want to leave it where it is at part two.
You have to understand how difficult crossovers are to do. I feel a lot of regret and irritation.
I'm not sure what will become of Cries at this point. I've got ideas for other fics but this darn story feels like an anchor tied to my ankles. =(

      ReplyDelete
    71. @Sunset Rose

Usually when a story reaches that point in your head, it's time to at least set it aside. Don't feel guilty about it, even if there is a chorus of "aw, darn!". Writing like this is meant to be a fun thing. And if it's not, then doing what's best for you is the smartest choice you can make.

Here, let me just untie that anchor...

Cause thats what this story certainly is.

      ReplyDelete
    76. I just noticed that I never commented on this one.

So: Shades of Midnight was a fantastic story. A fitting continuation of the events of Out in the Cold. Phoe's writing style is a little bit different than EsperDerek's, being centered a bit more on the events of the story rather than the emotions, but it works perfectly for the story's themes.

Cries in the Autumn Wind isn't quite as good, but it doesn't fall too far short. The main problem with it is that it was incredibly predictable (Well, sorta. I knew it was coming, but I did not expect it to be so... violent.). That being said, the characters still had believable and well-justified reactions to their situations (though I think the parts between Lotus and Autumn late in the second chapter read a little flat), so that is relatively easy to overlook. I'd give it a 4/5.

... It was simply moving, period... With where the first chapter ended, one almost completely forgot that something bad was supposed to happen, and right as one remembered... BAM!

    80. Shades of Midnight was... Well, I think it's the best writing I've ever saw around here. Story-wise, it was great, using an interesting method to tell Midnight's life. 6 star indeed.

I thought Cries in the Autumn Wind was actually pretty good. Spotted some typos (especially at the beginning). But (maybe because it's 6pm, no sleep, and I was having some beer) I didn't see the tragedy coming and well... I cried... Again. Very good piece. I can't help with thinking the fillyfooler stuff is a kind of retort to the yaoi obsessions i've come across, like this one writer who would have harry otter paired with just about any other male character you could think of, an excellent author mind you, but the relationships were usually homosexual, as a matter of fact i would dare say exclusively. sigh, a babybook I can't help but smile an look forward to when I raise my own child I kind of want a daughter, and then there is the son deal...all smiles

    97. @Jone Andre

Somepony asks this every time there's a new story in this series.

      The short answer: Magic.

It's explained in Reaching Midnight, the bonus chapter to Out in the Cold. At the end of Water, Food, Shelter, Companionship (AKA Out in the Cold Chapter 3), Luna gives Trixie and Twilight a book of sex magic as a gift. They're entirely too embarrassed to use it, until Luna shows up and basically gives them some prompting.

One of the spells in the book is a gender change spell. Trixie casts it on Twilight during the course of the night. So Twilight, as a stallion, gets Trixie pregnant.

    102. Wow...

That "Dreams of Midnight" side story truly was beautiful. Out in the Cold and its continuations have been my favorite fics for a long time. Looks like that isn't changing any time soon.

    103. I like the stories, but I've started wondering where Twilight's parents are while this is happening.

    104. @God:

You know, Trevor has been wondering that as well...

    109. Dreams of Midnight :

      >It had seemed so poignant at the time to name her after Trixie’s late mother, but at 3 in the morning... It had seemed so poignant at the time to name her after Trixie’s late mother, but at 3 in the morning...
-Yeah... It’s strange how everything become ‘’relative’’, when lacking sleep, isn’t it ?

      >A unicorn's horn shouldn't be glowing at all yet!" Twilight babbled out a defense,
-To her defense, this story was made before the ‘Baby cakes’ episode.

      >Ponyville didn't have a hospital
-Well... that one episode really did confirmed a lot of stuff, isn’t ? Still, I don’t get why some people thought Ponyville hadn’t one, even small ?

      >The eyes that she could never forget looked up at her, and Midnight smiled.
-Soooo...? Huh... The ghost of Midnight(mother) intercepted(or something) Midnight(baby), instead of allowing it to reach Luna, and then protected the baby waiting for the others to come ?
      Right now, I’m confused.

      >Midnight’s pent up magic must have interacted with the forest’s latent magic. She must have gone out of control, and affected the forest like this.
-Once she was IN the Forest, I guess, but... still doesn’t explain why she ‘’vanished’’ to there in the first place ? Unless the Everfree Forest reaches for several *miles* outside of itself...?

      >and I am a dream of the past, called by need and heritage.
-Ok... this explains, at least, the presence of the ghost-Midnight(mother) with the baby... Once read a similar thing in a few ‘Forgotten Kingdoms’ books, and the likes... but not why the ‘’teleportation stuff’’ was directed *straight* there, at this spot.

      -----

A pretty ‘inspired’ chapter, I must say... especially the ‘dream’ scene, and the end of the story.
An interesting story, even if, as Twilight said, there’s still quite a few unanswered questions.
