    1. >Sequel to Out In The Cold which was okay and kind of cheesy
      >Written by Phoe, the glorious and masterful Phoe

    2. Phoe is a girl.

      VastaKustuta
    3. Unbelievable. What is wrong with you?

      VastaKustuta
    4. Why is this tagged as News?

The whole point of the News tag is to avoid shit like this.

      VastaKustuta
    5. Anyone else notice...

One thing is posted every hour?

      VastaKustuta
    6. Gotta say for a story about an OC character, I enjoyed it a lot.

      VastaKustuta
    7. This is great! I love the format of her memories pouring out with a book. I love how her talent is magic, but revealed in the best way possible. Oh gosh. Probably the best story about an OC pony, and maybe one of the best on this website.

      VastaKustuta
    8. @Phoe
I haven't even read it yet so I have no idea who is right

but at least exploring the child of one of the characters in the mane cast is a pretty original idea, to say the least. I think anyway.

Seth holy shit FIX THIS POST; it's labeled as news and you called Phoe a he.

      VastaKustuta
    9. It's so cute! :D I love this little universe. I was especially fond of Midnight's dinner with Celestia. Awesome continuation fic.

    10. >Twilight and Trixie's daughter

      Something is wrong here...

      VastaKustuta
    11. Beautifully done, Phoe. Words can't describe how I feel... simply masterful work.

      VastaKustuta
    12. This was truly sweet and heartwarming, 5 stars, I loved it.

      VastaKustuta
    13. Phoe already knows how I feel, but I'll say it here anyways. This is a spectacular continuation to my little story, a possible variant on the wide open future that I left when I finished the bonus chapter. I couldn't have asked for better treatment of my scenario, nor Midnight.

      VastaKustuta
    14. wow that ending was sweet, very nice, gave me one of those just before but not quite choking up shudders around my back. Ill be honest, my eyes wanted some tears but i refused

      VastaKustuta
    15. I approve this addition with the might of a thousand Stars. :)

It was nice, yeah... I liked it, a lot.

Slices of life, memories of a past well lived...

Yeah, Happy and Nostalgia all in one, for the benefit of all. :)

    16. Urge to hug Lil Midnight rising.

      VastaKustuta
    17. I like this story. For being a sequel to a fanfic, it's done really well. It has a good balance of emotions and tasty tidbits of humour thrown into the mix. =D

      VastaKustuta
    18. So I finally sat down and read this whole series, completely ignoring my studies, and my face is now sore from the big stupid grin I contracted after finishing out in the cold.

      Confound these ponies...

Anyways, Phoe, thanks for putting the finishing touches on this story it really added the finality that I crave. And EsperDark, thank you for a kickflank story, it was an awesome read!

      VastaKustuta
    19. Yay! ^^ They used... a... small... portion of the pic I drew of Midnight's family... ;.; Waaaahhh, all that hard work on Princess Celestia and Luna and they got chopped off completely!

-(Hides in a corner and stage-sobs)-

      VastaKustuta
    20. Fanfic of a fanfic... we're getting rather meta here, aren't we? :D

But the story is good and heartwarming, in the best way, so who cares if it's meta?

(Okay, so I do, but I like meta stuff!)

      VastaKustuta
    21. Cottonmouth has got to be the most hateful brony around.

This story was amazingly touching. 5 stars, for sure. I was quite close to happy manly tears.

      VastaKustuta
    22. @Anonymous

You are, of course, welcome. Thank you for the kind comments about all of this, and I'm very happy that you enjoyed both my work, and Phoes spectacular add-on to my story.

      VastaKustuta
    23. Cottonmouth has had it out for this series of stories since it was created. ^^' Good to see that he isn't just out to get EsperDerek, though.

That said - you butchered my picture Seth! Butchered it! And you cut out the hardest parts too! I shall have vengence! -(Hoofwave)-

      VastaKustuta
    24. Wow this was a great series. Almost makes me wish there was more.

      VastaKustuta
    25. @Fleymevas

Heh, the funny thing about this is that this series has been extended at least three times. It first was only ever meant to be the original chapter, then three chapters, then three plus the bonus, and now there was THIS extension that was completely not me, so, yeah. What can I say?

      VastaKustuta
    26. I really didn't think I would like this, considering the pairing. I can't remember the last time I was so happy to be wrong.

      Brilliant work.

      VastaKustuta
    27. First let me say I really liked this story, especially how it was segmented in the form of different memories triggered by various things from her past. I swear Midnight has to be my favorite OC pony. Now if you all would permit me I'm going to nit pick a bit.
I thought some of the segments could have been a little longer. I think some of them could have been expanded on a little. While I understand why she would be drawn more to Trixie, I mean she did birth to her for crying out loud, I would have liked to see more scenes featuring just Twilight and Midnight.
Some more memories of Midnights school days would have been fun. Did she ever make real friends? Did she have any crushes? What would it have been like if she brought not just her friends but a potential love interest home to meet her moms?
Yeah just random little nit picks over all it was a good follow up to a good fanfic that introduced us to a great OC.

P.S. Do not read this while listening to the songs "I hope you dance", and "Butterfly Kisses." You will cry.

Oh, and on a side note I can't help but think that Twilight's curiosity would have driven her to cast "the spell" on Trixie so she could experience "child" birth. I can just imagine Twilight going though the whole thing then writing a huge book of a report on the experience.

      VastaKustuta
    28. I have to admit, I skipped over the "Out in the Cold" series originally, and only went back to read it when I saw that somepony liked it enough to write an entire side story about an arguably marginal character.

Now "Out in the Cold" is one of my favorite fics of all time, and definitively marks the start of my infatuation with the Great and Powerful Trixie. And "Shades of Midnight" is the perfect continuation - written with just as much inspiration as the original series.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again here, to me the version of Equestria described in this series is good enough to be canon.

Oh, and Phoe, all those adorable little short stories about Midnight as a filly? Tears of pure, fucking, joy were shed. Midnight is probably one of the best OC ponies so far, due in no small part to you! Thank-you so much!

...now if only we had some continuing adventures of Midnight. I would read that so HARD, again, and again. I know its a long shot, but like EsperDerek said, this entire series was originally supposed to be a one-off, so here's to hoping.

*sigh* Until then, I guess I'll just have to satisfy myself by reading the entire series again from the beginning. n_n

      VastaKustuta
    29. I'd been waiting for this fic, and WOW! So worth the wait, even though it was only a matter of days. Phoe, excellent job! Heart warming, touching, AMAZING. :D

      VastaKustuta
    30. This made me cry so hard you don't even know. Thank you so much!
The first story was amazingly well done as well.
      Ahaha!

      VastaKustuta
    31. Please for the love of God. I would give anything to read more...

      VastaKustuta
    32. You can't imagine how much I was touched by this story. Rose, I agree with you. I would give anything myself to read more. Even just another chapter. Please I havn't cried like this in a very long time. You are so talanted Phoe, PLEASE consider writing more, Please...

      VastaKustuta
    33. I doubt Phoe would be willing, it was hard enough for her to write this chapter, but...

Well, uh, looks like I'll take the hand-off again and start trying to run with my own ball once again. Or whatever sports metaphor works in this situation.

So, in other words, yeah, I'll be writing a continuation to this. Hopefully I can do as good a job continuing this as Phoe did continuing my own story!

      VastaKustuta
    34. @EsperDerek
YAY! That makes me very happy to hear, seeing as I just read the entire thing earlier today and really enjoyed it! <3

      VastaKustuta
    35. @Anonymous

... Oh my goodness. I don't think I have ever in my life had somepony beg me to continue a story. Certainly not with so much passion. I don't know what to say. I'm so touched that it meant that much to you.

As far as continuing it goes... I don't want to make promises. Writing this was very difficult for me. I will write more stories, certainly, and I hope that they can reach you even a tenth as much as this one has. And if I get the right idea, I might even continue this. But I don't want to get your hopes up. Let's wait and find out what EsperDerek comes up with himself, ok?

Thank you so much for reading.

      VastaKustuta
    36. I...I...almost fell over!
EsperDerek, Phoe! I love you guys so much you'll never know! Thank you for at least considering it! I hope so much that I can read more!

      VastaKustuta
    37. MAGNIFICENT story. Never expected what was to come in the next segment of the story's unfolding, many touching moments, many comical moments, incredible sense of description, detail, and dialogue. Fantastic epilogue of an epilogue.

      VastaKustuta
    38. Finally read this. Oh My Celestia this is amazing!

One of the best stories I have ever read

      VastaKustuta
    39. I have a couple points of concern, Phoe. I would like you to email me if you would be so kind. I myself was inspired to start writing my own fic and it will have a cameo from Shades Of Midnight. I guess I'm asking permission. If you could email me soon, I would greatly appreciate it.

    49. Ah, I see you posted it! Good for you! Can't wait to see whatever you do next!

      VastaKustuta
    50. Phoe, my compliments, this story made me DAWWW big time!

      VastaKustuta
    51. [SPOILERS}

The sad part didn't really do it for me. As soon as the locket gets mentioned you know what's going to happen, if for no other reason then that its been done to death in sad pony fics already. The reaction of Lotus is also not very realistic, there should have been a lot more time to grief, for both Lotus and Autumn.

Having said that, I do like where the end of chapter 2 is going. So I'll be keeping an eye out for chapter 3. Assuming there will be one that is.

      VastaKustuta
    52. @Baree
I'm aware of the overly cliche-ness of it, and I agree, I wasn't very descriptive of the two's mourning periods (as well as a few other parts). I left it mostly out by skipping ahead in time a few months.
I'll keep aware of things like this in the future, but for a first attempt I thought it was okay, albeit I was a bit too ambitious.
      Thank you.

      VastaKustuta
    53. Maybe I'm not cynical enough, but I didn't see it coming until it did. It makes sense in hindsight, but still. Sad, but still heartwarming - the best kind of sad.

      VastaKustuta
    54. It made me almost shed a tear , really sad and a great fanfic im looking forward to if it has more :)

      I love "Shades of Midnight"

And yes...I now love this story aswell =)

      Greatest OC pony story, EVER!

Can't wait to read the next one(s?)

      Keep it up!

      VastaKustuta
    58. I have to admit, I never saw Midnight going as far as she has when I first created her, nor how many people have been inspired by her. It's honestly been a bit of a nice surprise!

      VastaKustuta
    59. One word about Cries in the Autumn Wind...
      ExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExpositionExposition...
      Too much of it.
Show, don't tell policy applies here.
You've got a terribly rich imagination though. The character felt real...just...distant.

      VastaKustuta
    60. i want to see the whole picture that inkwell pony was talking about, not just whats up at the top.

      VastaKustuta
    61. About Cries of Autumn Wind

Is that it or will there be more?

      VastaKustuta
    62. The continuity of Cries is still in the air. I ended it with plenty of room to expand, and I had planned on writing more, but I hit a bit of a roadblock with it. If I get enough people to ask me, I will most likely write another chapter in kind, but for the time being, consider it on hold, but not finished.

      VastaKustuta
    63. Cries In The Autumn Wind.

1)Autumn gets a pendant with a photo of her parents.
      2) ''until certain unfortunate events''
      3) [Sad]

...Let's see how insanely predictable this will be...
      (5min later)
Yep. So predictable that it's pretty bland.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's well 'written'... words are there... but not very much of anything else.

      It's super... standard.

      VastaKustuta
    64. Really like Shades of Midnight :)

      VastaKustuta
    65. @Nova
I'll consider that a compliment considering I've never tried anything like this before, but maybe the description did hold a bit too much in the way of forshadowing.

      VastaKustuta
    66. I'm too tired to write anything long.... I'm too tired to bother bashing the EqD crowd...... I'm too tired to show people how much they miss when they can read the small details in the work.

I am Anon Samurai and I tell you to keep writing Sunset. I wish I could write more but my body is about to fail me. Hopefully I shall see more of this in the future.

      VastaKustuta
    67. Just to let you all know, I did start writing the third and final part to Cries in the Autumn Wind.
It won't be done any time soon though. I'm still in the planning stages.

      VastaKustuta
    68. Why are Twixie fics always just so much...better? I mean there's this series and there's The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle which are the only two shipping fics I can read without feeling awkward about...well, pony makeout sessions.

      VastaKustuta
    69. Loved it. Particularly the "letter from school" section. XD

For some reason, I could almost hear Celestia appearing to Midnight right after that confrontation and whispering "For the record, you ARE adopted, and that's terrible," to her... seems like something Trollestia would do, anyways...

      VastaKustuta
    70. The Mysterious Pony7. juuli 2011, kell 04:09

      That's so cool, Sunset Rose!

      VastaKustuta
    71. Thank you Mysterious Pony. I hate to disappoint anypony, but be honest, I don't know how long it'll take if it actually gets done. I'm so displeased with what I have so far I feel like I actually do want to leave it where it is at part two.
You have to understand how difficult crossovers are to do. I feel a lot of regret and irritation.
I'm not sure what will become of Cries at this point. I've got ideas for other fics but this darn story feels like an anchor tied to my ankles. =(

      VastaKustuta
    72. @Sunset Rose

Usually when a story reaches that point in your head, it's time to at least set it aside. Don't feel guilty about it, even if there is a chorus of "aw, darn!". Writing like this is meant to be a fun thing. And if it's not, then doing what's best for you is the smartest choice you can make.

Here, let me just untie that anchor...

      VastaKustuta
    73. Hah, Love that nod to "The Prestige" ... assuming it was, anyhow. One of my favorite movies. Love the stories though, makes me wish I could make my own additions (and by some stretch of a miracle, somehow make them even half as good).

      VastaKustuta
    74. @Phoe
I've already announced on my DA that it's going to be delayed indefinately.
The other parts of the story are there too. I tried sending Seth an email about it but it must have been overlooked.
      sunsetrosebrony.deviantart.com
I appreciate your advice, Phoe. Maybe one day I'll come back to it after I have a bit more experience.

      VastaKustuta
    75. Uhhh... How is babby formed? Seriously, i haven't read this one yet, and I intend to, but why do so many same-gender pairs in fanfiction somehow have children?

      VastaKustuta
    76. Why is there no tag that is called "Heartwarmer?"
Cause thats what this story certainly is.

      VastaKustuta
    77. I just noticed that I never commented on this one.

So: Shades of Midnight was a fantastic story. A fitting continuation of the events of Out in the Cold. Phoe's writing style is a little bit different than EsperDerek's, being centered a bit more on the events of the story rather than the emotions, but it works perfectly for the story's themes.

Cries in the Autumn Wind isn't quite as good, but it doesn't fall too far short. The main problem with it is that it was incredibly predictable (Well, sorta. I knew it was coming, but I did not expect it to be so... violent.). That being said, the characters still had believable and well-justified reactions to their situations (though I think the parts between Lotus and Autumn late in the second chapter read a little flat), so that is relatively easy to overlook. I'd give it a 4/5.

      VastaKustuta
    78. This is among the most beautiful pieces I've ever read.

      VastaKustuta
    79. So... Shades of Midnight... The GREAT and POWERFUL Trevor's verdict?

      Win.

Take one's internetz, all of dem. It was so close to making one manlytears.jpeg. That makes it win, plain and simple.

      VastaKustuta
    80. So... Cries in the Autumn Wind... The GREAT and POWERFUL Trevor's Verdict?

Well... It did NOT, for one, make the GREAT and POWERFUL Trevor manlytears.jpeg. That's first of all. Secondly, what it DID do, was make one... Umm... Well... *Takes a deep breath, before admitting quietly* it made one cryforever.jpeg.

... It was simply moving, period... With where the first chapter ended, one almost completely forgot that something bad was supposed to happen, and right as one remembered... BAM!

While one knows that there isn't really much room or developement for a part three, one would LOVE to read it...

      VastaKustuta
    81. Shades of Midnight was... Well, I think it's the best writing I've ever saw around here. Story-wise, it was great, using an interesting method to tell Midnight's life. 6 star indeed.

I thought Cries in the Autumn Wind was actually pretty good. Spotted some typos (especially at the beginning). But (maybe because it's 6pm, no sleep, and I was having some beer) I didn't see the tragedy coming and well... I cried... Again. Very good piece. Would like to see pt3 (the midnight-autumn relation and Autumn's cutie mark would be nice to see).
Confound this fanfictions, they drive me to emotion.

      VastaKustuta
    82. Phoe, I loved your story. Elegant, simple and so darn ada'waable.

M-moar please? Trevor begs of you for more slice of life stories with Midnight... He'll give you all of his internets!!! (Trevor already tried to give you money, but apparently his iPod does not accept cash, credit, or wallets being thrown at it.)

    86. @jrk08004

It's magic, he ain't gotta explain shit ;)

He does explain it though, in the first Midnight story Reaching Midnight. Magic was involved.

Anyway, loved the story as usual. Glad to see it made it up here.

      VastaKustuta
    87. @Bayonet Priest

Thank you. I was a little confused when I saw "Midnight...daughter of Twilight and Trixie".

I was about to get out my family's book on horses (the kind that has EVERYTHING you ever want to know) and find the section about two mares having a foal.

      Lol.

Seriously it's a good book though. A gift to my sister from our fierier.

This is why this series persists to be one of my two favorite fanfics ever. This story is just too beautiful, too amazingly perfect. I couldn't ask for any story so touching.

Thank you, again, Esperderek, you are an inspiration.

      VastaKustuta
    91. well, odd, yes. well happy stories abound nicely written and all. I can't help with thinking the fillyfooler stuff is a kind of retort to the yaoi obsessions i've come across, like this one writer who would have harry otter paired with just about any other male character you could think of, an excellent author mind you, but the relationships were usually homosexual, as a matter of fact i would dare say exclusively. sigh, a babybook I can't help but smile an look forward to when I raise my own child I kind of want a daughter, and then there is the son deal...all smiles

    93. I'm glad I ran across this. I just spent the last three hours reading every story. Got a few looks when I laughed aloud or got a little sentimental. This is one great, feel-good romp.

    96. Really surprised to see Dreams ending up on this post; I expected it to go on a post of its own, or on the original Out in the Cold page.

Ah well, no matter! It's still reaching its audience and making them d'aww, so I'm happy. :)

And yes, when EsperDerek first sent me the link to this story, I cried those manly tears, too.

    97. And just HOW can two mares have a kid together...?

    98. @Jone Andre

Somepony asks this every time there's a new story in this series.

      The short answer: Magic.

It's explained in Reaching Midnight, the bonus chapter to Out in the Cold. At the end of Water, Food, Shelter, Companionship (AKA Out in the Cold Chapter 3), Luna gives Trixie and Twilight a book of sex magic as a gift. They're entirely too embarrassed to use it, until Luna shows up and basically gives them some prompting.

One of the spells in the book is a gender change spell. Trixie casts it on Twilight during the course of the night. So Twilight, as a stallion, gets Trixie pregnant.

    103. Wow...

That "Dreams of Midnight" side story truly was beautiful. Out in the Cold and its continuations have been my favorite fics for a long time. Looks like that isn't changing any time soon.

    104. I like the stories, but I've started wondering where Twilight's parents are while this is happening.

      VastaKustuta
    105. @God:

You know, Trevor has been wondering that as well...

    106. Twilight and Trixie have a kid? No way I'm reading this. Author Phoe....Damnit, now I have to read all the stories that lead up to this, just so I can read a story by Phoe. Confound you Phoe!

    110. Dreams of Midnight :

      >It had seemed so poignant at the time to name her after Trixie’s late mother, but at 3 in the morning... It had seemed so poignant at the time to name her after Trixie’s late mother, but at 3 in the morning...
-Yeah... It’s strange how everything become ‘’relative’’, when lacking sleep, isn’t it ?

      >A unicorn's horn shouldn't be glowing at all yet!" Twilight babbled out a defense,
-To her defense, this story was made before the ‘Baby cakes’ episode.

      >Ponyville didn't have a hospital
-Well... that one episode really did confirmed a lot of stuff, isn’t ? Still, I don’t get why some people thought Ponyville hadn’t one, even small ?

      >The eyes that she could never forget looked up at her, and Midnight smiled.
-Soooo...? Huh... The ghost of Midnight(mother) intercepted(or something) Midnight(baby), instead of allowing it to reach Luna, and then protected the baby waiting for the others to come ?
      Right now, I’m confused.

      >Midnight’s pent up magic must have interacted with the forest’s latent magic. She must have gone out of control, and affected the forest like this.
-Once she was IN the Forest, I guess, but... still doesn’t explain why she ‘’vanished’’ to there in the first place ? Unless the Everfree Forest reaches for several *miles* outside of itself...?

      >and I am a dream of the past, called by need and heritage.
-Ok... this explains, at least, the presence of the ghost-Midnight(mother) with the baby... Once read a similar thing in a few ‘Forgotten Kingdoms’ books, and the likes... but not why the ‘’teleportation stuff’’ was directed *straight* there, at this spot.

      -----

A pretty ‘inspired’ chapter, I must say... especially the ‘dream’ scene, and the end of the story.
An interesting story, even if, as Twilight said, there’s still quite a few unanswered questions.
