These tests are pretty much about as accurate as horoscopes. People are so complex that they fall into many different categories in different situations and even moods, and that's assuming there's even any rational basis for the four dichotomies (they are based on Jungian psychology, which is largely discredited today).

I used to work for a company that set great store by Meyers/Briggs inventories. It's got some weaknesses, but overall can give a fairly accurate picture of how you see yourself, and often of how others see you. I got Twilight Sparkle, which is a way more gratifying descriptor than my usual INTP :)

ReplyDelete100%, 12%, 62%, 11%. Celestia, and that last bit tends to change depending on the day, so closest leaning to Twilight after that. No matter what, I have stupid amounts of power to throw around. This will not end well when combined with world domination plans involving giant hamsters.

ReplyDeleteThe INTJ archetype, a.k.a. the mastermind has an essential quality that makes Celestia a poor choice to represent it.
Masterminds are capable but not eager leaders, stepping forward only when it becomes obvious to them that they are the best for the job.
Though I suppose there can be arguments that Celestia is a leader who is not eager to do her job, and that there is no pony else competent enough to do the job, but canon personifies her as enjoying what she does.
That was a huge surprise. I got Celestia.

ReplyDeleteThat being said, "which character are you?" tests usually fail because the answers are too obvious. At least with Myers-Briggs the questions and answers are so vague that they could apply to anyone, so maybe not as many worries concerning people choosing what they know they want?

I tend to score right on the INTJ/INTP borderline in MBTI tests. Generally, though, while the MBTI is better than nothing, it still doesn't really do a great job. It forces me to generalize things about myself that don't exactly generalize well.

ReplyDeleteAlthough, minor quibble, I would've swapped Luna's INFP with Celestia's INTJ. INTJs would be more the type to plot a kingdom takeover and question established ideals, while INFPs are the type to want to read letters all about friendship and fun adventures that others are having (in the comfort of their own Canterlot castle).

Took both tests. I'm between INTJ and ISTJ, though of Celestia and Big Mac, I feel like Big Mac's description fits me better, though looking at both tests, the strengths of all my preferences seem to be fairly low overall.

First test put me ISTJ (100/12/12/22), second put me as INTP (77/33/11/11).

From what I can (barely) recall of taking similar tests in the past, the S-N and J-P have varied somewhat but the T has been fairly constant - and the I has DEFINITELY been a constant.
(For what it's worth, I'm a 31-year-old software dev who composes music as a hobby.)

ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that this has been mentioned, but what bugs me is that we have absolutely no idea what kind of personality Luna has, yet we attempt to assign her a position on the chart.

I had to take one of these for a promotion once. They actually thought it was true....it was only years later before I heard the skeptoid podcast on it.
But I got to say, the test is 20% cool (and probably more accurate) with Ponies in it. =)

ReplyDeleteAnyway, I took the second "pro" test first, which gave me a p=24571387, "Independent Thinker". I suppose that corresponds with the introvert, intuitive, thinking and judging percentiles. I didn't see a four letter code, which is a shame because the questions in the second ("pro") test were clearer. My l33t skillz0rs would include Scientist, Professor and Photographer. My peer group includes Arnold Schwarzenegger. awesome. Pony up, Arnie.
Test the first, the one with double-negative logic ('do you not like ice cream?' type questions) gives you a code, mine was INTJ. Celestia. Percentiles: Introvert 78, Intuitive 50, Thinking 62, Judging 44.
The trouble with Myers Briggs is that the first three letters are obvious enough that you can probably just pick them off a chart, and the last one is just complete BS.
