Rarity's was extremely cute. Applejack's was surprisingly deep and emotional. Fluttershy's was eye opening. Pinkie's was abstract and just a smidgen insane.
But Twilight turned her mother into a fern. Do you know how many darkfics are spawned based on her parent fearing her? Can you imagine!? Also Birth of Spike, so that's like a twofer right there.
Applejack's story gave us deep insight into her character, Fluttershy's was a great world builder and absolutely adorable, Rarity's was hilarious, Pinkie Pie's was delightfully absurd, and Rainbow Dash's had a reference to Gurren Lagann, but Twilight's had her change into JEAN FRAKKING GREY! Plus, it featured her parents, the birth of Spike, Twilight actings genki, terrific special effects, and Celestia acting like freaking Professor Xavier. How can you not love that?
Face it guys, each of the stories was amazing one way or another. I eventually had to pick Twilight's tho - just based on the sheer amount of "yay" in that story.
Just imagine if you had your very own "perfect" day, how stoked would you be?
If anything, Fillyshy's was the best, because she caused the whole chain of events. She could have ran away, hid in the clouds, broke down and cried, anything but be the flag girl, and she wouldn't have gotten hers. If she had turned and ran before Dash showed-up, no pony would have gotten theirs.
@Anonymous I'm not sure how reliable she is as a narrator -- I somehow doubt her family literally farmed rocks -- but yeah, it kinda makes sense that she's Amish. Er, Maneonite.
Twi's background was awesome for seeing her parents as well as getting the story on how she wound up Celestia's personal apprentice, and seeing the sun-raising ceremony was just icing on the cake. There was plenty of awesome in the others, but Twi's was a triple threat. No contest.
i liked them all. anyone think twilights cutie mark has a much deeper meaning it kinda is like the elements of harmony or rather the little stars are her friends and the big one is her. maybe am reading too much into it.
Thanks to this episode, Pinkie Pie is my new favourite. I believe the Rock Farm thing. Have some of you played "Digimon world 1", there was a fucking meat farm! Friendship is MAGIC!
Well I for one voted for Rarity, and not just because she is awesome. I just liked how her story was both humorous and can be extrapolated upon.
For instance, Rarity is from Ponyville originally, and attended the Ponyville public school. Ponyville of course being earth pony centric, she appears to be the only unicorn in her class, while all the other unicorns we've seen (aside from Sweetie Belle) seem to have attended school at Canterlot, which likely is geared more toward magical education.
So where did Rarity learn her magic? Did she go to a secondary school which taught her magic, or did she learn it on her own? Also, why was she raised in Ponyville while most other unicorns seem to be raised elsewhere? Where her parents more down to earth than she seems? Or did they just send her away for one reason or another?
In addition, it's shown that she knew that she wanted to be a designer before she obtained her cutie mark, so instead of embracing her destiny of being a treasure hunter, she instead harnessed her natural ability to achieve her original dream. I think it's awesome that she snubbed destiny, the other ponies all decided to become defined by their cutie marks, while Rarity defined what her cutie mark meant herself.
Of course I'm completely biased, and you may have a different opinion. I can respect that.
They all had their good points: AJ's British accent, Fluttershy's beautiful song, Pinkie Pie being born among the Amish, Rainbow Dash and her EXTREMELY CUTE facial expressions after she made the Sonic Rainboom, and Rarity's "MAH DESTINY!" but Twilight's magic going loco and Celestia somehow taming it just edges itself as the best of them all.
we saw quite a few young Unicorns at the party in Call of the Cutie, they go to school in Ponyville because they are from Ponyville, same with Pegasus's like Scoots, Ponyville isn't an Earth pony only town dude, and Canterlot isn't a Unicorn town (judging from this episode it's more mixed then Ponyville actually) really the only town that only one type of pony lives in is Cloudsdale.
To be honest, I found Fluttershy's song a little anticlimactic. I'd been waiting so long for her to have a solo that I was sort of disappointed. A bit cheesy for the high quality of songs I've come to expect from MLP:FiM
This makes me wonder what would have changed if one of Dash's other stories had won that contest. I kinda wanted to see if Dash's mom would look like Firefly.
I, personally, loved Twilight's. Also, I love the fact the Celestia plays up the raising of the sun JUST for the enjoyment of her followers on the Summer Sun Celebration. I doubt she does that EVERY day. x3
I voted for Twilight for the best scene, in part because she’s my favorite character, but also because her back story was just that amazingly good.
However, if there had been an option to indicate the second best scene I probably would have voted for poor neglected Applejack, since hers was one of the more (surprisingly) poignant ones of the bunch. After all, in some sense Twilight and Rainbow Dash earned their marks by already having natural skills in certain areas, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie earned theirs through a combination of accident and happenstance, and Rarity was literally dragged to hers by the powers that be. Applejack, on the other hand, left her family and home intent on finding a better life and tried to change her entire identity in an attempt to fit in better with vapid socialites, but in the end had the strength and conviction to return to the (presumably) difficult life she left behind. And despite it being a harder path then she could have followed, she has never indicated any regret over it.
All in all, it definitely raised my opinion of her.
Applejack's story was just like Applejack herself: simple and genuine. If it had been the most remarkable story of the batch then it wouldn't really have been appropriate for her. It's a good story that explains a lot about Applejack, but due to its nature it's not going to be many peoples' favorite . . .
@Gent It wasn't a contest. They had this whole episode done and in the can before they put-up the poll. As said by one of the layout artists, 'it's more to see if you can guess how the story will go.'
The same goes for the contest the Canadian channel had for how.... whatever episode it was would end, in which the episode had been shown weeks before the contest.
The layout artist then went-on to say that they have never once made a completed alternate ending for any episode.
I can't say who the layout artist is, as he hasn't told anyone, but he goes by Nayuki on AllSpark.
I didn't vote because I liked them all. Though I have to admit, Twilight's is probably the stronger one, and AJ's the weaker one.
Side note: Did anybody else notice that the CMC's teacher was in Rarity's flashback as the filly in costume to the left of the one in a cake costume? Didn't notice that until now....I love how detailed this show is!
@Daffodil Definitely. The whole thing was a reference to X-men I think (Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters vs. Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns)
That being said Twilight's filly story was the best. Celestia is fascinating and anything that goes into detail about her and Twilight's relationship is fantastic.
And to think that weeks before we were laughing at Rainbow Dash stealing Twilight's horn and screaming about the power of a thousand suns.
I like to imagine that Celestia thought "gotta kill this bitch before she overthrows me" and is trying to destroy her every other episode or so, including 'mysteriously disappearing' right before nightmare moon shows up.
This is really weird -- Despite all the hype leading up to Rainbow Dash's cutie-mark story people didn't care for it that much. I guess I was expecting something a bit more to happen during the race.
It's the same as with AJ herself - There aren't many who like her the best, but few would rate her their least liked pony. If we had a "What pony do you like least" poll, I guess Rarity would come out on top.
Also, while I liked AJ's story, sometimes you've got to admit another pony, like Twilight, was better in a particular episode.
Why don't we have the inverse. Which backstory was least liked? Sure it's a huge flame topic, but it would at least confirm that Applejack, while not rated #1, was far from being hated.
As much as Pinkie's my favourite character, Twilight definitely had the best scene. The only ones I didn't like/didn't care were Fluttershy's (song was meh and I don't really like FS) and RD's (we knew what will happen and rainbow coming from her mane looked weird).
You don't want to know how many rocks I picked out of fields with my brothers and sister and parents... Granted we also grew real crops.. you know living plants, but there's a good reason my house is beautifully decorated with rocks making up my landscaping... I picked most of them in my youth. Moved the piles one car load at a time to my home, and used them. I had to get a lot of help to move the big ones, but it's totally worth it.
I can totally understand the absurd necessity for a "rock farmer".
Twilight had an epic scene, but I can't get Dash's utter multicolored cuteness out of my head. At least 20% of Dashies scene is fueled by pure cute fuel.

poor AJ.

ReplyDeleteWell put. :3
Rairty's was the best for the 2001: a space odyssey reference.
ReplyDeleteI loved all of them, I just loved Twilight's best.
ReplyDeleteI'm Telling you, Twilight is the Legendary Super Pony that appears every 1000 years!
ReplyDelete@Springtime BluesHaha! I only saw that mentioned by one viewer in the livestream, glad others seem to be noticing it lol.
ReplyDeleteDamn rock...
@Anonymous
ReplyDeletegoddamn it why does everything have to be "O MY GOD I CAN WRITE GRIMDARK WITH THIS" in this fandom?
hell I want to see more of Twilights parents but I want that to be something heartwarming and whatnot not based on her parents being terrified of her.
could-have-made-a-cornfield-joke-right-here-about-twilight-but-didn't
ReplyDeleteWas anyone else unsurprised that Pinkie came from an Amish family? The fact that they farm ROCKS makes it even more awesome.
I half expected Twillight to yell out "UNLIMITED, POWER!" when she started going crazy.

ReplyDeleteShe acted more like Jean Grey to me...
I'm just happy that we finally know why Pinkie's hair is that way.

ReplyDeleteI still think Pinkie Pie is like the Joker and makes up all her back-stories.

I am quite surprised Rarity scored so low, and Fluttershy scored so high.
ReplyDeletePeople probably liked that Fluttershy finally got an individual song.
ReplyDeleteAnyone play MVC3? When Twilight went Super Saiyan, I heard Phoenix saying "I can't control it!" in my head.
ReplyDeleteCheapest character ever. :|

Fluttershy used to be my favourite but no more.

I didn't vote simply because I couldn't decide. I like ALL of them.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Twilight but I was so sure that Fluttershy would have at least gotten second place. Oh well.
ReplyDelete>mfw Rainbow dash doesn't even get 3rd place
ReplyDeleteThey all had their good points: AJ's British accent, Fluttershy's beautiful song, Pinkie Pie being born among the Amish, Rainbow Dash and her EXTREMELY CUTE facial expressions after she made the Sonic Rainboom, and Rarity's "MAH DESTINY!" but Twilight's magic going loco and Celestia somehow taming it just edges itself as the best of them all.
ReplyDeleteTwilight first, Rarity second (because of how someone else said she defined her cutie mark, not her cutie mark defining her), and Fluttershy third.
ReplyDeleteI liked them all though. :)
I voted Twi because the thick firm plot it supplied for me to rub my greasy hands on.
ReplyDeletebut I raged at how derp big spike looked
@l0x0r

I VOTED FOR YOU AJ!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, am I the only one who really liked her story?

ReplyDeleteOh, absolutely!
@Ciroton
I expect the big flare was unnecessary, but raising the sun with herself is awesome -- exploiting both her horn and wings.
I voted for Twilight for the best scene, in part because she’s my favorite character, but also because her back story was just that amazingly good.

ReplyDeleteWent Applejack, here. Hers was my favorite for one reason, and one reason only.
ReplyDelete...
Two reasons.
First, she's flippin' Applejack.
But also... "Cockadoodledooo.... :(" Nothing else caused that much d'aww-ness.

ReplyDeleteLittle Macintosh.
Three reasons.
I truly did like Pinkie's beceuse hers was...different, like myself.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see the episode until after the poll had closed. Otherwise, I would have voted Fluttershy. SHE WAS SO ADORABLE! O_O
ReplyDeleteI didn't vote because I liked them all. Though I have to admit, Twilight's is probably the stronger one, and AJ's the weaker one.

Twilight's was one big reference to X-men so it gets my vote. They were all awesome in their own ways though.
ReplyDeleteAlso when she was going all magic-overload on us I half expected to hear "POWER, OVERWHELMING!"
Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteSo i'm realy the only one who thought of Terra from Final Fantasy 6 when Twilight's true power manifested?
First of all, Applejack is the best pony.
