A while back (like 4 months or so?) a bunch of concept art for Friendship is Magic popped up around /co/. I thought it was neat, but the blog wasn't around back then!
Fast forward today, and these amazing building sketches pop up on ponibooru... and here I am with the ability to report it!
I love the detail on Canterlot up there. We really need more fics to take place in that city. (*cough* More like this,Thanks!)
Anyway, I digress! Applejacks farm and Twilight's tree can be found after the break.
Note: these are not confirmed. If for some reason this is just some really talented artist with too much time on their hands, consider it drawfriend:building edition

wow, they're really good
ReplyDeleteThey're beautiful, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThese can also be great to show somebody the amount of detail this show puts into it's backgrounds.. really makes you appreciate the artists even more!
ReplyDeleteI like how AJ's farm has other crops besides Apples. I have also never noticed how the whole place has a Dr. Seuss feel when you see the hand drawn sketches. Also Canterlot does not look nearly as large as I thought. Either way these are DAMN good.
ReplyDeleteEvery time you say more after the break I keep thinking your taking a break for food or a smoke or something lol
ReplyDeleteOh my god, the details on this concept sketches are to DIE FOR! To think that so much effort had gone into these things, you would think that we're going to visit all of these places and... I'm sorry, I need to stop drooling for a moment.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we SHOULD have a Drawfriend: Building Edition! For some people, architectural drawings are hard, but it would be nice to see their takes on "the architecture of Equestria"! Especially seeing Marehatten and Cloudsdale, there's got to be some drawings of what people would think are there... right?
Stop linking to that fic. There are other fics that take place in Canterlot that are not completely tedious and frustrating to read.
ReplyDeleteAs for the subject matter, it's near-perfect, but Canterlot seems a little crazy IMO. More like some twisted land instead of a regal castle-city.
The Canterlot sketch has blown my mind. o.o

ReplyDeleteThis... THIS!
Seconding for great justice. We need buildings. Concept arts. Maps. Cities. EVERYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE!
Do eeet.
Wow... It really changes the way you view at the buildings. At first, I didn't really give much notice to them. but now seeing it. I can see the immense amount of work put into designing them.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to end up really appreciating them =0

Does anyone still have those? Care to share?
=========
Watching episodes 1 and 3 again, you can tell that these match the background assets perfectly. It seems that all the buildings are built to be totally modular so they can be rearranged, removed, and remixed to create new compositions. Check out the individual towers of Canterlot through Twilight's window in the first episode. And look at the end of Ticket Master: the doorway to her tree gets flipped to face the other way so that the ponies can exit to the right. Pretty sneaky, sis.
ReplyDeleteyup! it's a faust. you can see her style all over it. that must be art of the so called FIM bible.
ReplyDeleteman, Lauren is great
@crazyredemu
ReplyDeleteI used to think that when people said it on joystiiq. Took me a while to figure it out.
These would look sex on the Ponyfinder pages.
ReplyDelete@Kein
ReplyDeleteAre these the ones, Sethisto? http://www.mylittleponynews.com/2010/06/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-tv.html
Or are you talking about Faust's original drawings?
http://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/122
Or was there something more?

Lauren usually signs her work though, concept art and all
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this is just supposed to be Canterlot palace itself, rather than the whole thing. Its too small to be a town, let alone a city, let alone a royal capital city.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteIn my fic "Half the Day is Night," I had it just be the palace. And what looks like a mountain peak behind it? That's really the outside walls of the extinct volcano the real city of Canterlot is built inside of. That's how you get those green rolling hills Twilight Sparkle is running through in Act One of the first episode, y'see.
Well, if this _isn't_ production art, then it looks as though the backgrounds from the show have been traced. Either way, it's cool to see.
ReplyDeleteI can just hear the Lord of the Rings music when looking at Canterlot.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, that is gorgeous.
This is really gorgeous art! Whether it's official or not, I'm glad I saw it.
