In the Doctor Who episode "Silence in the Library", shadows were inhabited by microscopic carnivorous creatures called the Vashta Nerada that could only be driven back or killed with light.
It's (among other things) a reference to the Dr. Who episode Silence in the Library, which has a Wikipedia page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silence_in_the_library
It's also an awesome episode, so if you're interested in the new Dr. Who and haven't gotten to it yet, don't read that page!
*Grins* I'm so happy to know I'm not the only pony who was kinda baffled by this one. I like Don Ko's stuff but they really need to have explanations under their comics, the last one was kinda "huh?" too.
THe gist of it is The Doctor ( a time/space traveler)and his companion arrive on a library that covers the entire planet; yet strangely the entire place is deserted... long story short the shadows are alive and eat people if you dont stay in the light.
I don't really get it either. I've seen the Dr Who episode a while back, I know about the shadows....but I don't get what it has to do with strangling Celestria.
"Yay indeed..." She must like the way the Doctor handles her alicorn! ^.^
I'm not complaining, I love the fanfic's and comics, but it makes me wonder what has drawn so many Doctor Who fans to the pony fandom. I've been a fan of the Doctor for some time now, but only recently fell for the pony's. And other than Doctor Whooves, who is a mostly fandom driven character, I don't see the connection.
@Anonymous No, they weren't driven back/killed by light. They just hid in darkness. They can survive, they're just so small, and have such huge swarms that they look like shadows.
Confound that ponies! They drive mt to Doctor Who. And this is true. Fanfic #12 made me wonder about the Doctor. I saw several episodes before, but was not interested in that time. Ponies make it all complete and now I like Doctor Who. Not a hardcore fan, but it's a damn good series.
Ah... I knew that most of bronies will not understand. I even made a explanation on the Deviantart about what's happen. Next time I will ask Seth to post here not only actuall comic, but also my explanation of it.
@Anonymous Can anything survive under the pressure of thousand suns? Answer - No. Even Vashta Nerada. Maybe except Fluttershy, but only because she has force field of cuteness around.
OK, by some miracle this is the one episode of doctor who I have watched. Vashta nirada are carnivorous entities that lurk in shadows. Characters who went through shadows with these entities died almost instantly from being stripped down to their bones. coincidentally, this episode happened in a library. alright? I think that explains it fully ^_^

Hahaha! Loving Celestia' after-face in the third panel -#-
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I appear to be one of the few who understand the reference. Doctor Who is always good for a laugh! Don't forget the Weeping Pegasi!

ReplyDeleteBang on description, mate.
What is with Celestia's face in the last panel?
ReplyDeleteI remember that episode, the doctor feeds the shadow a chicken leg.
ReplyDelete@Fanloser: My guess is that releasing so much magic from her horn was similar to...*ahem*
ReplyDeleteWell -blam!- Looks like my 10 page Dr.whoof Fanfiction that I have been working on for the past 2 months is now going to be made by someone else!
ReplyDeleteQuickly I must post before someone else takes the idea!
One day soon, I'll be watching Dr. Who just so I can understand all the Dr. Whoof jokes.
ReplyDeleteConfound those ponies, they drive me to research!
Did anyone else notice twilite. I was laughing at flutter shy when I noticed twi face sicking out of the book shelf.
ReplyDeleteCelestia now has a fetish for auto-erotic asphyxiation. It's canon.
ReplyDelete@FightingFire
ReplyDeleteNot auto, it's assisted. And I think it more has to do with all the magic shooting out of her horn.
This is awesome.
ReplyDelete@Fanloser
ReplyDeleteI would guess that she horngasmed.
@Brian
ReplyDeleteSo basically, Doctor Whoof and the Princess just had one of the weirdest forms of sex EVER.
They killed Fluttershy's shadow... no wonder she's going yay. She's positively glowing now!
ReplyDeleteDid... did Celestia just get off?
ReplyDeleteLOL there's a half-life book on the third panel.
ReplyDelete"If you want to live, count the shadows"
ReplyDeleteSo Celestia is into erotic asfixia...?
ReplyDeleteAWESOME. And I think Celestia has a choking festish.
ReplyDeleteNah, it's just the effects of such a powerful... release.
ReplyDeleteI don't really get it either. I've seen the Dr Who episode a while back, I know about the shadows....but I don't get what it has to do with strangling Celestria.
ReplyDelete@Batty Gloom
ReplyDeleteAnd Once you become a Doctor Who fan you'll never type or write it as "Dr. Who" again.
I don't exactly get the comic. But I thought it was really good.
ReplyDelete"Yay indeed..." She must like the way the Doctor handles her alicorn! ^.^

In the last Panel Fluttershy lacks her shadow.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThat's because the Vashta Nerada has been defeted!
@BlitzWing00
ReplyDeleteIt seems Doctor Whoof used Princess Celestia as a glorified flashlight!
@FasterThenRainbows
ReplyDeleteMat_Fullbright 1
I'm getting the feeling that English was not Don_Ko's first language...
ReplyDeleteDoesn't make sense what's going on...
ReplyDeletewhy hate celestia so much??? hate the president! LOL

HEY WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS
ReplyDeleteHEY WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS
HEY WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS
@Anomymous
ReplyDeleteGreat, now I have an image of a zombie-astronaut-pony chasing the group and saying that over and over. And without further adieu to 1-up that:
"Twilight Sparkle has left the library. Twilight Sparkle has been 'saved'."
CELESTIA IS IN DIRTY STUFF????
ReplyDeleteWHY that face after somepony choke her
..... OH I GET IT! Ha.
ReplyDeleteCelestia has a choking fetish. I'm actually not all that surprised.
