The opening sequence shall not be missed again, hopefully the sequence will set up a great episode. This is your host random anonymous in a crowd, 'A bird in the hoof' is making reference to an old proverb.
That proverb is "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". It means 'It's better to have a small advantage, then the possibility of a greater one'.
The proverb was started by ancient falconry, THE MORE YOU PONY.
@Anonymous Huh, I always associated it with dove hunting, like if you had one in your hand, it was worth twice as much as one you may or may not find digging around where you thought it went down. Learn somethin' every day.
Are there any live streams of the show when it airs? Me and another brony are driving down to Florida right now (Someone else is driving we're in the back) and we REALLY wanna see ponies!!!
I like how Celestia's been to PonyVille like five times since the series began and everyone is still freaking out because she came over for tea and cupcakes.
The I'm not really doing a proper review by Random Anonymous in the Crowd.
Rainbow Dash trying to get into the royal service to become a Wonderbolt, those guys are horrible stoic.
Rarity is being Rarity and she's wearing her gala dress. Applejack is being a silly pony. Pinkie pied herself and Mrs. Cake did the same gasp Pinkie did in the first episode. They are killing Celestia with kindness. Hey that's a pheonix nice pet for Celestia, it'll last forever. A big disaster is about to happen, now for the commercial break.
This is Random Anonymous in the Crowd, Reporting after the first commercial break.
Philamena. Everything Fluttershy tries is backfiring spectacularly as she tries to fix up the phoenix. Twilight played to Murphy's law, never say something you know is going to happen as soon as you deny it will.
What's happened so far: >Alice In Wonderland reference >Everyone freaking out about Celestia being at a party >Celestia mentions sick pet phoenix >Fluttershy takes the phoenix to try and cure it >without telling anypony >Twilight shows up to try and sneak the phoenix back >the cops show up
Reporting in this was a good episode. (Twilight and Fluttershy based)
They are trying to cover it up and it's going horribly.
Twilight imagines Celestia as a tyrant, fan service alert. In a cage, in a dungeon and in Everfree Forest... poor Fluttershy the fan fiction artist are going to cream her about as bad as Pinkie randomly creams herself with chocolate.
Return of the yakety sax the Jimmy Hart version. That bird is smart and magical it made itself a mustache and even drew on it's own poster.
And a character death was had, for a few seconds. The show made poor Fluttershy cry and they know nothing of pheonixs until after this episode.
Philamena looks better now and is a Rainbow Dash 'twenty percent cooler' heh.
Rainbow Dash gets her revenge against the stoic guards and is a comfirmed phoenix whisperer or she can talk to birds.
Ending: >Twilight gives the phoenix tough love >it escapes >chase scene featuring oblivious guards >phoenix dies, bursts into flames midair >sad Fluttershy is sad >Celestia shows up >explains how phoenixes work >secret butt fun
...No, I don't know why I'm summarizing the episode, just felt like it I guess.
Celestia confirmed again for massive troll. Celestia's bird confirmed for massive troll. Rarity confirmed for being awesome. Applejack confirmed for being a silly pony. Pinkie confirmed for being Pinkie. Twilight confirmed for being drug addict.
A total wrap up of the whole episode Fluttershy gets phoenix down, unintentional Final Fantasy reference.
They learned all learned a lesson and the episode had a smattering of all the ponies.
It's just too bad that I recognized the phoenix in the first part of the episode before it did anything phoenix like.
They actually killed a character in the show.
Reincarnating from your own ashe doesn't matter, that bird still died and was somehow capable hearing despite being a pile of ashes defying a law of physics. Also Pinkie likes doing cartwheels good Celestia everybody I'm not sticking around for Luna.
I liked that episode a lot! I think I'm happiest about Canon Trollestia. The faces RD makes at the guards should make for some excellent reaction images, and the Alice in Wonderland reference was cute.
Twilight Sparkle: Hey Celestia should I write you a report about the event you just experienced? *Derp*
Celestia: ...Really, Twilight? I was here, I experienced it.
I swear, sometimes I think Celestia is just messing with people. She's awesome. Not a tyrant, just a troll. Also, Angel isn't a jerk because he's mean, it's just that he has to put up with Fluttershy so much that he's reached his limit on her overprotectivenss.
from Xanderfox... Nice to see Fluttershy come out of her shell, and funny that of all the ponies she was the most casual with Celestia. Also seemed like Celestia was very much not about the "fancy dos", her reaction to Pinkie Pie, or her lack of reaction speaks volumes. In inclusion of the yakkity sax chase scene was nice. Also I hope everyone noticed Fluttershy was singing the start of theme song. That Philamena was a phoenix seemed obvious to me, that Celestia showed no concern that the royal pet was a wreck kind of telegraphed it.
I love Fluttershy soooo much. I will never get tired of Fluttershy episodes. :3
I never had an opinion of Celestia but she was a big troll in this episode!! I liked her a lot. Really we haven't seen that much about her, so this episode was good for that again.
And Rainbow Dash is still the best ever and she made me giggle.
Twilight brought a new meaning to "love and tolerate" the troll out of you. She'll help you against your will and will force medicine down your throat...
I liked this episode. Am I the only one who didn't figure out it was a pheonix until the end? I'm glad I didn't, because it was a good surprise for me. c:
At first, I thought it was weird for the princess to have such an...interesting pet. But at the end, I was like, 'Ohhhhhh, it makes so much sense,'. Of course, the only pet the princess would have would be one with as much longevity as herself.
Great episode, overall. The bird's antics had me laughing so hard. I also smiled more than I should have at the Alice in Wonderland reference.
This wasnt celestia tier, but it was bloody funny. So many references to so much win. benny hill, scooby doo, roar runner...verily my cup runneth over.
Ig your on livestream watch a whole buncha ads at once and then it will increase the time to the next ad, do until the next ads are after the vid is doen
Trollestia now 20% more likeable as well as having the power of a thousand suns.
Socially awkward borderline personality defect Twilight Sparkle, we love you.
Everypony gets a few good lines.
Rarity is still mai waifu.
And Rainbow Dash can't speak Pheonix: Peonixes just recognize her as a fellow unstoppable dominator of the sky and receive messages directly from the quantum field of awesome.
srsly gaiz, what is gonna happen if there is ever a BAD episode? Their batting average so far is incredible.
umm... yes. :)Doing good, wish I knew what I was doing and wish I had a commercials clipped dl of this weeks ep. Figure it out I spose. Thanks anon for posting my YT vid, glad other ponies enjoyed that one
Does /co/ really consider Celestia a tyrant, I thought it was one massive running gag? Wouldn't say Celestia was a troll, I rather enjoyed that she was uncomfortable with the obscene kowtowing of the citizens of Ponyville, it adds a few layers to her personality.
I think both the tyrant and troll labels are tongue in cheek, except maybe for some grimdark fanfic authors who take the political aspect way too seriously.
Well, part of the freakout might be the fact that the Princess is in a quaint little town like Ponyville for no real reason other than to have some food. It's likely to be a lot more relaxed when they're at the Gala, because it won't be any major deal - It might be a big important event, but it's not like it's unusual.
Great episode, my thirst for ponies is quenched... for now. Loved Twilight Sparkle in this one, she really is quite a Social-Shark with Celestia Complex. Tough Love, baby! Also, scene when Fluttershy is crying... I was so sad like never before in my life for a second there guys. Rainbow Dash - So. Awesome! Great little scenes with her here, especially at the beginning. Pinkie Pie getting more Batshit Insane, episode after episode, I start to worry about her. And Rarity - Mai Waifu.
BTW, a HUGE amount of pop-cultural references in this one. Tasty.
Very nice episode. Twilight as always trying hard to please and having her imagination run wild, Fluttershy biting off more than she can chew, and Philomena (yes, that's the proper spelling of her name) apparently being a bit of a prankster (in both her pre-incarnation and reincarnation phases) were some cool high points. Top it off with Dash finally getting the Guards to crack a smile and you got a great episode.
I give it two hooves up. Now, to wait for next week and....filly main herd cuteness explosion imminent!
I wouldn't say that's a plothole. The student doesn't have to know all of the teacher's secrets.
I mean, the Harry Potter books were like that, with Dumbledore having all kinds of secret magic pets and magic items that were only revealed to Harry when necessary.
Another thing, how has Twilight not read about it studying magic as she does? Really everypony in Equestria except maybe Celestia and the guards didn't know what the bird was.
The biggest guess is that Celestia really doesn't bring it up much and didn't see fit to tell Twilight what it was either. Trollestia indeed for it later became a humorous tale for her to tell future generations.
(SPOILER!)When the bird died and Fluttershy let out a yelp like noise, they recycled her line from episode one where she whimpered her name. Probably a bad explanation, but hopefully someone else caught that. They seem to be recycling a lot of audio in this series. In my opinion, it doesn't really work, like using Rarity's reaction to Twilight's hair in episode one to do her laugh in episode 16. (OMG, I'm turning into a pony nerd that can name specific scenes from specific episodes... Confound these ponies! Their every action moves me.)
@AngrytigerP why? I mean id rather have her cry consistently then have new sounds that sound nothing like before and it makes sense she would have the same/similar noise wen shes scared/upset
@Anon's reply to AngrytigerP - It'd be fine if they used the same noise for a specific emotion or reaction, but recycling audio that doesn't fit, doesn't work. What they should do, since they seem to want to, is record various reaction noises, then play them back when needed, like your suggesting.
1) I knew, as soon as I saw Celestia's bird a) obviously in poor health, b) with Celestia completely unconcerned, and c) with a name beginning with the "ph" sound, that it had to be a phoenix. I was immediately reminded of the scene in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" with Fawkes.
2) More Yakety Sax in the chase scene.
3) Fluttershy's "Aren't you going to banish me" seems AWFULLY masochistic...
4) And edging near the fourth wall by shouting out to the episodic letters from Twilight.
Twilight probably HAS read books about it. Books without pictures or diagrams, or with only pictures of the phoenix in its majestic full plumage. Books that wouldn't tell her how to recognize the exact symptoms of a phoenix in its renewal phase, and how to tell it apart from, say, a normal bird sick unto death.
"retl #MLPFiM HEY WAIT A SECOND Pinkie Pie inherited "the gasp", right? So why is her name Pinkie Pie instead of Pinkie Cake, Pinkie Pop, or Jr.?" Yeah, I was wondering about that too just a bit ago.
"You want to...be a watch?" just killed me, but the part about banishment later got even better. Amazing episode, loved the guards and yakety sax again too.
Anypony notice that Fluttershy is apparently the one keeping all of the character's Gala dresses? Near the beginning you can pretty clearly see her own, Twilight's and Pinkie's.(At first I thought it was just Pinkie's dress, I was thinking "Wow, what you got there, fluttershy?")
She could have just stitched her own versions though.
@Don_ko You got it 10 minutes before the episode? Had it weeks ago brony
My money is on Celestia's bird being a phoenix (and it mirroring Harry Potter in that it looks like things are bad then it's just the bird regenerating). What other bird would a 1,000 year old pony keep? @Parallel Logic Freaking nailed this one ^^
:) I rather like this ep, it felt a bit more natural than the last few have been, and Twilight's reaction shots ftw =p
What if.. what if she gets banished, put in a cage, explodes, and then explodes again? Can that happen?
@NeverGoBak I'll be the one to break it. A layout artist has already said that the animators recycle props, regardless of their original purpose. So if we ever see Twilight or AJ's closet, they'll probably have the gowns, too.
It didn't cross my mind that that was actually a phoenix, so I thought Celestia was pretty much just darn stupid for not noticing the state her pet was in.
I think I began to love Fluttershy even more after this ep, and Twilight probably a little less. Her nervous wreck act was annoying. And I think they overdid with Pinkie Pie's actions.
There was one non-Gala dress also. Surely it would have been less awkward to pull some random dresses from Rarity's boutique instead though, right? Oh, and Twi's ugly, red dress. Whatever gets the job done though.
It's a split second picture that doesn't matter, and it can be interpreted as Fluttershy's love for sewing. All's awesome.
@varledge Actually, if you recall 'Green isn't your Color', the last dress Rarity tosses from behind the screen, which lands on it, is Twilight's dress that she asked Rarity to mend the button on.
And aside from the ones that've actually been worn and the one covered in gems she sold to *dramatic pause* Sapphire, what dresses have we seen in Rarity's boutique?
Twilight you are so lucky to have Fluttershy as your friend. Also everybody spazzing at the luncheon had me chuckling. Celestia showed that she can be formal but have a bit of fun too. I wonder it luna will be more of a free spirit next season hmmm.
LOVED Celestia's turn as a prankster. While this episode gave most of the characters positive attention, Celestia really knocked it out of the park. She is truly the broniest of princesses.
...whatever that means.
All of the little details and references were stellar, too: the "White Rabbit" Angel bit, the closet full of the snazzy dresses from Suited For Success, Rarity WEARING her dress again (yes!), Rainbow Dash messin' with the guards, Pinkie Pie barreling over ponies with a cartwheel, Applejack being clueless in a formal setting, Mr. and Mrs. Cake grabbing some much-needed screentime (shame the mayor didn't get any), Twilight Sparkle freaking out over the birdnapping, the combo Benny Hill chase plus Scooby Dooby doors, and Fluttershy's best spotlight performance yet in an FS-centric ep.
This show just keeps getting BETTER. Kudos all around, FiM team!
She might banish you from equestria... or throw you in a dungeon... *gasps* ...or banish you and then throw you in a dungeon in the place that she banishes you to!
There's a scene I wrote in the fourth chapter of my fanfic, literally months ago, where Fluttershy interprets charades from a character that cannot speak. I even had the tapping on the nose. This has not yet been published.
Hah, nobody's going to believe I didn't rip off this episode now.
An altogether troll-bowl episode. Some of these scenes were incredibly lulzy and others were just plain silly. But it was good. It was a good episode.
Mr. and Mrs. Cake remind me of several pairs of parents from Nickelodeon cartoons, not surprising given all the voice actors in common. Really, Jimmy Neutron's parents stick out at me...
Unfortunately I though the episode took a little dip after the party when it was just Fluttershy and the ponenix but it recovered after Twilight came back.
In regards to the recycled sounds, I only noticed Pinkie's gasp the first time I watched it, but I'm certainly going to notice the other recycled sounds when I watch it again.
There could be several reasons why sounds were recycled, such as the actors/actress not being available to record a new sound and the episode's deadline is fast approaching, or the show's team felt it would go unnoticed.
Either way, the show's team will undoubtedly ensure they do not recycle OBVIOUS sounds at the very least in future, I think it's safe to assume that some of them frequent EqD to pick up criticisms.
A couple of recycled sounds aside, fantastic episode! The show's writers really outdid themselves with this episode's script. They managed to have all of the mane six in a very Fluttershy-centric episode without making any of the characters feel awkwardly placed or forced into the episode. They have done it before, I know, but it still takes a lot of work to write several characters into an episode AND give them something worthwile to do.
Pinkie Pie was batshit crazy, and made me laugh out loud every time she was onscreen. Rarity had her crazy fashionista moment, which was great Applejack's frustration about trying to balance her appetite with her manners made for some d'aww from me Rainbow Dash's antics with the guards was funny to watch, and her teaming up with the Phoenix was a lovely way to bring the end of the episode
These four of the six mane characters were not central to the main plot, and in a similar situation on another show, simply would've fell off the face of the planet once the party had ended. But because they didn't, and because the writers put extra effort in giving them something meaningful to do later on, I find this particular episode to be extremely satisfying.
A great episode and like the twist about the phoenix (granted, I figured it out as soon as the bird burst into flames but still a good twist) but there is just one thing that bothered me.
No Derpy! She wasn't even invited to the party! Augh, this is the second episode in a row!
This, to me, really helps set Friendship is Magic apart. Most of my favorite episodes involve all six of the main cast in some fashion, and this episode is indeed a standout example of how to incorporate all of them even though only two of six command the spotlight. Fluttershy and Twilight Sparkle carried the episode, yes, but every other main pony contributed in a satisfying way despite very limited screentime.
Charlotte Fullerton, who wrote A Bird in the Hoof, also wrote Suited For Success - another exemplary episode in that, despite focusing primarily on Rarity, it cast all six main ponies in a significant (if hazardous!) role. Also, it can't be mere coincidence that she brought back those fabulous "Take 2" show dresses from her previous ep. Good show, that.
Honestly, not very impressed. Out of all the main cast, Fluttershy is my least favorite. I've never been a fan of shy, soft-spoken characters, as they always seem wimpy and annoying to me.
Plus, for being the most innocent of the main cast, Fluttershy was pretty evil.
1) Theft of property. 2) Theft of ROYAL property 3) Lying to members of the royal guard 4) Giving medicine to an animal that she knows nothing about, potentially killing it 5) Doing absolutely no research into what kind of animal she was helping, thus not knowing that it was a freaking phoenix, and is SUPPOSED to act like that 6) Giving various foods to said unknown animal- come on, Flutteridiot, chocolate can kill dogs, and birds are immune to some types of poison, but you don't know what type of food is safe for this thing to eat!
Plus, the whole thing boiled down to "Fluttershy makes a criminally stupid mistake and gets away with it without even a slap on the wrist."
Not to mention that a lot of the antics and "Humor," seemed ripped off of either A) the Roadrunner, or B) Scooby Doo.
I don't like scooby doo.
I would have honestly liked to see Fluttershy get some sort of punishment. Maybe she has to clean out the royal bathrooms for a whole week, maybe she has to write lines from now until the next episode, something!
Not that pleased. Definitely my least favorite episode so far.
Quite frankly, I couldn't disagree more with DarkHawk1. Although that may be mostly due to the fact that Fluttershy is roughly two more squeaks and a well-timed smile from MAI WAIFU status for me.
RBD's scenes and Twilight's gradual descent into madness both made today worth waking up for, and Fluttershy was, if "criminally stupid", at least in character. If she sees a sick creature, she's going to take care of it; whether that's "stupid" or not is up to the beholder. I was thinking something along the lines of "You're gonna end up killing that thing...", but it wasn't enough to detract from the rest of the episode.
To concede a point, though, the Scooby Doo scene did seem like a bit of a step down, in a sense of "C'mon, you can do better than that." Hopefully, they'll just use it once for the sake of the reference.
Yeah IMO the scooby-doo-doors was the biggest disappointment in the episode. Its just overly cliche in and otherwise awesome and noncliche cartoon. Otherwise everything else was fantastic, also liked seeing more of the Royal Guards. It was also nice that hte Royal Guards actually talked instead of neighing like in the first episode.
1:06 Fluttershy has Twi's and Pie's gala dresses 3:16 Crem burle ala dragon 5:38 Celestia has sense of humor 9:59 hey that's mine x()~ 10:12 "About morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after." 14:21 Recycling, not only good for the environment, but also scenery. And sound clips I do read these comment threads. 16:05 Evil Twilight 16:39 I'll have the number 25 Well this is my new XIII makes Night Mare XV in the old tarot deck Seven days till DAWWWmagetion x()~
I liked the doors, too. It's a cliche, sure, but in a good show the occasional cliche can be a tasteful bit of wit. Heck, the Benny Hill running routine's a cliche in itself!
To be perfectly honest I did not know it was a Phoenix at first, I thought it was some dopey bird that Derpy probably gave to her. But my goodness this was an amazing episode. Parodies everywhere and my favorite pony as the star of the episode<3 Four hoofs up~
Also along with the 'bad' episodes is more of a matter of opinion. I thought a Dog and Pony Show and Suited For Success were bad. Though plenty of other people think they were good. Also some people thought that Call of the Cutie and Show Stoppers were bad when I thought they were good. It's a matter of opinion~
I for one liked this one better than Over a Barrel
What was there not to like?
Celestia everywhere, Pegasi Royal Guard everywhere, actually making expressions and even talking, Rarity's crazy exit, Rainbow Dash randomly appearing to join the "race" and immediately zooming off without even waiting for an answer, and I'm probably missing several more
And did anyone else notice the episode trolling the *viewers* at around 12:40, when Philomena takes a long sickly-sounding breath then just freezes and totally looks like she is gonna drop dead the next second, a suspicious chord starts to play, Twilight and Fluttershy stop talking and look at her with concerned faces... then the music stops and they carry on as if nothing has happened. And Philomena just coughs again
Anybody else noticed a reference when Twilight said "Make her straighten up and fly right!"? I did. Though I had to look it up on Google just to be sure. ;P
@DefoloceI was doing an Alice in Wonderland crossover weeks ago, and they turned Angel into the White Rabbit, AND used dialog. Now, it's over. OVER! I'd have to wallow in...whatever it is that ponies wallow in.
As soon as I saw the bird, I knew it was a phoenix. I'm surprised that neither Fluttershy nor Twilight had any idea- shouldn't Twilight know considering how well she knows Celestia?
Same here man, it's really distracting, for instance, the laughing part from after Giggle at the Ghosty was recycled when the CMC got laughed at after the concert, and i keep noticing it, it's a bit anoying.
Ok first I never notice the repeated sound clips tell you guys point them out. The Scooby Doo gag was meh for me mostly cause I expected Pinkie Pie to hop threw unexpec....er you know what I mean! Fluttershy's Talent is helping animals Im sure if it really needed help she could of saved it but because it didn't she was off her game. The princess had to see the Mayor not the mare. Angel is AWESOME!
The door of Fluttershy's House is spooky. The doorknob and the door hinges are always switching places. Sometimes they are even on the same side. And the door sometimes opens to the left and sometimes opens to the right.
Oh, and in the second half of the episode Ponyville became spooky too. There were absolutely no background ponys in town … like a ghost town. @_@

I liked that episode a lot! I think I'm happiest about Canon Trollestia. The faces RD makes at the guards should make for some excellent reaction images, and the Alice in Wonderland reference was cute.
ReplyDelete@Cereal Velocity Whos a silly pony? Youre a silly pony! Who is? You is -- Applejack! :D
ReplyDeleteTwilight Sparkle: Hey Celestia should I write you a report about the event you just experienced? *Derp*
ReplyDeleteCelestia: ...Really, Twilight? I was here, I experienced it.
I swear, sometimes I think Celestia is just messing with people. She's awesome. Not a tyrant, just a troll. Also, Angel isn't a jerk because he's mean, it's just that he has to put up with Fluttershy so much that he's reached his limit on her overprotectivenss.
It's not amazing, but it's a solid and fun episode. I think I actually like Angel, now. *Goes off to write Angel/Lola OCsue shippingfic or something.*
ReplyDeletefrom Xanderfox...
ReplyDeleteNice to see Fluttershy come out of her shell, and funny that of all the ponies she was the most casual with Celestia.
And people think Rainbow Dash was abusive. Look at what Twilight does.
ReplyDeleteI love Fluttershy soooo much. I will never get tired of Fluttershy episodes. :3
ReplyDeleteI never had an opinion of Celestia but she was a big troll in this episode!! I liked her a lot. Really we haven't seen that much about her, so this episode was good for that again.
And Rainbow Dash is still the best ever and she made me giggle.
I liked this episode! It was fun.
Twilight brought a new meaning to "love and tolerate" the troll out of you. She'll help you against your will and will force medicine down your throat...
ReplyDeleteI kept getting commercials for Santa Anita Derby Days. Watch a show about Ponies, and get commercials featuring ponies. *head asplodes*
ReplyDeleteWatching this until somebody posts a link:

ReplyDeleteRarity's exit is too great for words, Her voice actress must have a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteLive stream starting now up top guys
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. I like this version better due to music.
I liked this episode. Am I the only one who didn't figure out it was a pheonix until the end? I'm glad I didn't, because it was a good surprise for me. c:
ReplyDeleteAt first, I thought it was weird for the princess to have such an...interesting pet. But at the end, I was like, 'Ohhhhhh, it makes so much sense,'. Of course, the only pet the princess would have would be one with as much longevity as herself.
Great episode, overall. The bird's antics had me laughing so hard. I also smiled more than I should have at the Alice in Wonderland reference.
oops forgot to put the youtube link for version I like better.

ReplyDeleteJust beautiful episode.
Better than most.
:D
10\10
just an awesome episode, watched it 3 times. Will watch it again :)
ReplyDeletecan't wait till it dls. Anypony know how to record on VLC?
One of the best extended openings so far.
ReplyDeleteTrollestia now 20% more likeable as well as having the power of a thousand suns.
@fluttershypony
ReplyDeleteIs that you fluttershypony?
Whatup!
Just finished the episode! Happiness acquired! Should last until next episode!
ReplyDeleteTHAT OPENING IS SO INCREDIBLE!
ReplyDeleteI'm vibrating with such joyous energy after watching like the first minute and a half that I'm afraid to continue!
umm... yes. :)Doing good, wish I knew what I was doing and wish I had a commercials clipped dl of this weeks ep. Figure it out I spose. Thanks anon for posting my YT vid, glad other ponies enjoyed that one
ReplyDeleteGAH! Must contain excitement... until HD episode is up.
ReplyDeleteDoes /co/ really consider Celestia a tyrant, I thought it was one massive running gag? Wouldn't say Celestia was a troll, I rather enjoyed that she was uncomfortable with the obscene kowtowing of the citizens of Ponyville, it adds a few layers to her personality.
ReplyDelete@Benschachar
ReplyDeleteI think both the tyrant and troll labels are tongue in cheek, except maybe for some grimdark fanfic authors who take the political aspect way too seriously.
Hi everypony! Episode is cool!^^
ReplyDeleteHD cable at: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S1LFUCIP
ReplyDeletegood quality, with HUB ads.
It just occuered to me.. If they were freaking out for a simple brunch, How are they going to act at the Gala?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else noticed the giant plothole of the princess' trusted student not knowing that the royal pet is a phoenix?
ReplyDelete@smx:
ReplyDeleteWell, part of the freakout might be the fact that the Princess is in a quaint little town like Ponyville for no real reason other than to have some food.
ReplyDeleteBTW, a HUGE amount of pop-cultural references in this one.
ReplyDeleteI give it two hooves up. Now, to wait for next week and....filly main herd cuteness explosion imminent!
@Mads
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that's a plothole. The student doesn't have to know all of the teacher's secrets.
I mean, the Harry Potter books were like that, with Dumbledore having all kinds of secret magic pets and magic items that were only revealed to Harry when necessary.
@Mads
ReplyDeleteAnother thing, how has Twilight not read about it studying magic as she does? Really everypony in Equestria except maybe Celestia and the guards didn't know what the bird was.
The biggest guess is that Celestia really doesn't bring it up much and didn't see fit to tell Twilight what it was either. Trollestia indeed for it later became a humorous tale for her to tell future generations.
Essentially, the entire episode was Fluttershy and Twilight getting trolled by a phoenix, then Rainbow Dash and the phoenix troll the guards too
ReplyDeleteI agree with an earlier anon.
ReplyDeleteI can hardly see an episode that would be considered "bad".
Some to me are "average" but with moments in them that make them worthwhile.
But yes, gotta give Lauren and the different writers credit. They have managed to create a meaningful TV series out of...ponies!
*round of hoofplause*
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteI agree. It would seem we've also had a chain of especially good episodes as of late.
The noise Fluttershy makes when she's crying is the same as the final "I'm Fluttershy" squeak during her intro in ep 1.
ReplyDeleteKind of threw off the emotions for me.
Applejack does not get sandvich. This makes Heavy very upset.
ReplyDelete(SPOILER!)When the bird died and Fluttershy let out a yelp like noise, they recycled her line from episode one where she whimpered her name.
ReplyDelete>trollestia and her trolloenix
ReplyDeletethis needs to be the name of a fanfic about them trolling
@AngrytigerP
ReplyDeletewhy? I mean id rather have her cry consistently then have new sounds that sound nothing like before and it makes sense she would have the same/similar noise wen shes scared/upset
@Anon's reply to AngrytigerP - It'd be fine if they used the same noise for a specific emotion or reaction, but recycling audio that doesn't fit, doesn't work. What they should do, since they seem to want to, is record various reaction noises, then play them back when needed, like your suggesting.
ReplyDelete1) I knew, as soon as I saw Celestia's bird a) obviously in poor health, b) with Celestia completely unconcerned, and c) with a name beginning with the "ph" sound, that it had to be a phoenix. I was immediately reminded of the scene in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" with Fawkes.
ReplyDelete2) More Yakety Sax in the chase scene.
3) Fluttershy's "Aren't you going to banish me" seems AWFULLY masochistic...
4) And edging near the fourth wall by shouting out to the episodic letters from Twilight.
Also, speaking of recycling audio, the gasp when Celestia's cup is empty is the same as Pinkie Pie's gasp on first meeting Twilight.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous "how has Twilight not read about it"
ReplyDeleteTwilight probably HAS read books about it. Books without pictures or diagrams, or with only pictures of the phoenix in its majestic full plumage. Books that wouldn't tell her how to recognize the exact symptoms of a phoenix in its renewal phase, and how to tell it apart from, say, a normal bird sick unto death.
@Alfador
ReplyDelete"retl #MLPFiM HEY WAIT A SECOND Pinkie Pie inherited "the gasp", right? So why is her name Pinkie Pie instead of Pinkie Cake, Pinkie Pop, or Jr.?"
Yeah, I was wondering about that too just a bit ago.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteBut it makes no sense in this context. The sound is clearly her muttering "something Fluttershy". Why does she have to tell the dead bird her name?
"You want to...be a watch?" just killed me, but the part about banishment later got even better. Amazing episode, loved the guards and yakety sax again too.
ReplyDeleteHaaa... Pinkie Pie actually trolled Trollestia! Way to go, Pinkie.
ReplyDeleteCelestia you TROLL. Trollestia is officially a badass.
ReplyDeleteAnypony notice that Fluttershy is apparently the one keeping all of the character's Gala dresses? Near the beginning you can pretty clearly see her own, Twilight's and Pinkie's.(At first I thought it was just Pinkie's dress, I was thinking "Wow, what you got there, fluttershy?")
ReplyDeleteShe could have just stitched her own versions though.
@Don_ko
ReplyDeleteYou got it 10 minutes before the episode? Had it weeks ago brony
My money is on Celestia's bird being a phoenix (and it mirroring Harry Potter in that it looks like things are bad then it's just the bird regenerating). What other bird would a 1,000 year old pony keep? @Parallel Logic
Freaking nailed this one ^^
:) I rather like this ep, it felt a bit more natural than the last few have been, and Twilight's reaction shots ftw =p
What if.. what if she gets banished, put in a cage, explodes, and then explodes again? Can that happen?
@NeverGoBak I'll be the one to break it.
ReplyDeleteA layout artist has already said that the animators recycle props, regardless of their original purpose. So if we ever see Twilight or AJ's closet, they'll probably have the gowns, too.
It didn't cross my mind that that was actually a phoenix, so I thought Celestia was pretty much just darn stupid for not noticing the state her pet was in.
ReplyDeleteI think I began to love Fluttershy even more after this ep, and Twilight probably a little less. Her nervous wreck act was annoying. And I think they overdid with Pinkie Pie's actions.
And kudos to the use of spanish flea
@Auta Mane
ReplyDeleteThere was one non-Gala dress also.
@2000cookies
ReplyDeleteStrangely the ads on Livestream never actually play for me. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm wondering why they're broken for me but not others?
Philomena/Fawkes OTP.
ReplyDeleteCelestia and Dumbledore confirmed for friendly-old-troll-you-just-can't-help-but-like BFFs.
@zorinlynx
ReplyDeleteCertain ad-blocking programs deny those advertisements.
@varledge Actually, if you recall 'Green isn't your Color', the last dress Rarity tosses from behind the screen, which lands on it, is Twilight's dress that she asked Rarity to mend the button on.
ReplyDeleteAnd aside from the ones that've actually been worn and the one covered in gems she sold to *dramatic pause* Sapphire, what dresses have we seen in Rarity's boutique?
Twilight you are so lucky to have Fluttershy as your friend. Also everybody spazzing at the luncheon had me chuckling. Celestia showed that she can be formal but have a bit of fun too. I wonder it luna will be more of a free spirit next season hmmm.
ReplyDeleteLOVED Celestia's turn as a prankster. While this episode gave most of the characters positive attention, Celestia really knocked it out of the park. She is truly the broniest of princesses.
ReplyDelete...whatever that means.
The first thing someone needs to do is to put the Benny Hill Yakety Sax song to the chase scene.
ReplyDeleteShe might banish you
ReplyDeletefrom equestria...
or throw you
in a dungeon...
*gasps*
...or banish you
and then throw you in a dungeon in the place that she banishes you to!
Oh wow.
ReplyDeleteThere's a scene I wrote in the fourth chapter of my fanfic, literally months ago, where Fluttershy interprets charades from a character that cannot speak. I even had the tapping on the nose. This has not yet been published.
Hah, nobody's going to believe I didn't rip off this episode now.
+1 Trollestia confirmed
ReplyDeleteThis episode showed off Twilight's bedside manner. I really feel sorry for Spike now.
ReplyDeleteOmg, thx you so much!
ReplyDeleteCelestia_trollface.jpg
ReplyDeleteKnew from the start that it was a phoenix. Thanks, Harry Potter :D
ReplyDeleteAlso, the recycled sounds are annoying... especially when they're as noticeable as Pinkie's gasp.
Celestia confirmed for evil dictator.
ReplyDeleteAn altogether troll-bowl episode. Some of these scenes were incredibly lulzy and others were just plain silly. But it was good. It was a good episode.
ReplyDeleteMr. and Mrs. Cake remind me of several pairs of parents from Nickelodeon cartoons, not surprising given all the voice actors in common. Really, Jimmy Neutron's parents stick out at me...
Trollestia confirmed.
ReplyDeleteAwkward freaking out Twilight is best Twilight.
Dash was awesome (though that is to be expected.)
Unfortunately I though the episode took a little dip after the party when it was just Fluttershy and the ponenix but it recovered after Twilight came back.
@Fast and Free
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I might start doing the same, since Rebecca Black ruined the name "Friday"
"The mare has requested an audience with me. Royal duty calls!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can practically feel the sisterly affection there.
In regards to the recycled sounds, I only noticed Pinkie's gasp the first time I watched it, but I'm certainly going to notice the other recycled sounds when I watch it again.
ReplyDeleteThere could be several reasons why sounds were recycled, such as the actors/actress not being available to record a new sound and the episode's deadline is fast approaching, or the show's team felt it would go unnoticed.
Rarity had her crazy fashionista moment, which was great
Applejack's frustration about trying to balance her appetite with her manners made for some d'aww from me
Rainbow Dash's antics with the guards was funny to watch, and her teaming up with the Phoenix was a lovely way to bring the end of the episode
ReplyDeleteNo Derpy! She wasn't even invited to the party!
Augh, this is the second episode in a row!
Hellz yeah, a phoenix! I'm not sure how much this has actually happened to the show, but this show just got another 20% cooler!
ReplyDeleteLove the episode. Absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteCan't stop rewatching Trollestia and Dash vs. Guards
"Tough Love, baby!"
ReplyDelete- Best line yet. =P
MLP1080p has part 1 up in HD, part 2 should be coming soon

ReplyDeleteExtremely satisfying episode, Trollestia, Pinkie's parents, Though love Twilight, Bugs Phoenix, Angel being nice to his bi ...er pony.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, each time a new ep comes on I'm worried it's gonna go downhill, which makes them even better.
I really didn't see this as one of there better ones (right after "over the barrel" which is one of there best).
ReplyDeleteI feel I have seen this ep in other shows before :/
Anyone but me think of the Red Robin commercial with the British guards when they saw this?
ReplyDeleteVideo Must Be Made.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThis, to me, really helps set Friendship is Magic apart.
ReplyDeletePlus, for being the most innocent of the main cast, Fluttershy was pretty evil.
1) Theft of property.
2) Theft of ROYAL property
3) Lying to members of the royal guard
4) Giving medicine to an animal that she knows nothing about, potentially killing it
5) Doing absolutely no research into what kind of animal she was helping, thus not knowing that it was a freaking phoenix, and is SUPPOSED to act like that
6) Giving various foods to said unknown animal- come on, Flutteridiot, chocolate can kill dogs, and birds are immune to some types of poison, but you don't know what type of food is safe for this thing to eat!
ReplyDeleteRBD's scenes and Twilight's gradual descent into madness both made today worth waking up for, and Fluttershy was, if "criminally stupid", at least in character.
@Darkhawk1
ReplyDeleteU mad bro?
Haha! That was some seriously awesome stuff!
ReplyDeleteDid anybody else make the connection between the bird and those bush chickens in WoW? I thought they looked strangely similar.
But anywho. This episode made me whole-hearty laugh. Good stuff here bro =)
its friday friday
ReplyDeletecheck youtube on friday
everybodys lookin forward to the
ponies ponies
"Why must our pony diets use appetizers, entrees, and desserts interchangeably?!"
ReplyDeleteYeah IMO the scooby-doo-doors was the biggest disappointment in the episode. Its just overly cliche in and otherwise awesome and noncliche cartoon. Otherwise everything else was fantastic, also liked seeing more of the Royal Guards. It was also nice that hte Royal Guards actually talked instead of neighing like in the first episode.
ReplyDelete^Oh and liked the consistency that the Guards trusted Twlight enough to go away when she lied as they know that shes pretty close with the Princess.
ReplyDeleteI think there might be a few drawings with Fluttershy/Phoenix Feather in the immediate future.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know who Celestia's VA is, I think I recognize the voice but I can't place it.
ReplyDeleteWHAT DID APPLEJACK SAY AT THE END?!?!
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful episode. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd poor fluttershy... if there's one character who I just can't stand the sight of crying....
Well, when any pony cries, it makes me feel bad. :(
Am I the only one who LIKED the little Scooby Doo Doors sequence? It wasn't very long, and it was funny enough, IMO. Kept me laughing, anywho.

Though this was a super cute episode, I am a little anxious to see when Apple Bloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle get their cutie marks.
ReplyDelete@ x()~
ReplyDeleteI think you mean...D'AAAAWWWMAGEDDON!!
Every part of this, every minute was so damn lovable. So clever. So engrossing. It is suffocating. SUFFOCATING. This show is EATING ME ALIVE.
ReplyDelete@Prominence
ReplyDeleteI liked the doors, too. It's a cliche, sure, but in a good show the occasional cliche can be a tasteful bit of wit. Heck, the Benny Hill running routine's a cliche in itself!
Drawn by a fellow brony:
ReplyDeletehttp://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn240/Artismylife_album/TrollFace.png
TROLLESTIA BE TROLLIN' YO
To be perfectly honest I did not know it was a Phoenix at first, I thought it was some dopey bird that Derpy probably gave to her. But my goodness this was an amazing episode. Parodies everywhere and my favorite pony as the star of the episode<3 Four hoofs up~
ReplyDeleteAlso along with the 'bad' episodes is more of a matter of opinion. I thought a Dog and Pony Show and Suited For Success were bad. Though plenty of other people think they were good. Also some people thought that Call of the Cutie and Show Stoppers were bad when I thought they were good. It's a matter of opinion~
I for one liked this one better than Over a Barrel
ReplyDeleteWhat was there not to like?
Seriously guys? Was I the only person to notice that Celistia had a wingboner when leaving the party to go visit the Mayor?
ReplyDelete@MaskedShe probably raised her wings to look more regal/imposing
ReplyDeleteAnybody else noticed a reference when Twilight said "Make her straighten up and fly right!"? I did. Though I had to look it up on Google just to be sure. ;P
ReplyDelete@Masked
ReplyDelete>mfw I was just coming here to post this
Wait, was that really a HAM sandwich?
ReplyDelete@Fast and Free
ReplyDeleteYup liked this one better than Over a Barrel, it had good scenes but I didn't care much for the buffalo plot.
Although after watching the stream for a bit and seeing the bird Omg what is that but it turned out well.
Didn't find the scooby doo scenes etc. annoying, they were maybe too clichéd but it is a kids show after all so you can't please anybody and it fit into the theme of the episode. Really liked that Celestia finally had more screen time, if only poor Luna would appear before season 2 ..
But socially awkward Twilight was golden, didn't know she could be so mean :D
@DefoloceI was doing an Alice in Wonderland crossover weeks ago, and they turned Angel into the White Rabbit, AND used dialog.
ReplyDeleteNow, it's over. OVER! I'd have to wallow in...whatever it is that ponies wallow in.
@Fast and Free Yep, why else would they keep pigs?
ReplyDelete@SandmanI tried not to think about it at the time, to be honest
ReplyDeleteAnd ponies aren't supposed to be omnivores oO
Anyone think this calls back to the Parasprite episode where Celestia couldn't make it to Ponyville?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteSeems plausible at first blush...
As soon as I saw the bird, I knew it was a phoenix.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that neither Fluttershy nor Twilight had any idea- shouldn't Twilight know considering how well she knows Celestia?
@Fast and Free I know from my own experience that horses will eat hamburger. So if the ponies are anything like their real world counterparts...
ReplyDeleteI liked all the parts that had ponies in it.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I understand it as a cost cutting measure, the recycled audio clips (Pinkie's gasps, Fluttershy's squeaking) DO kinda bug/distract me.
@Pacce
ReplyDeleteSame here man, it's really distracting, for instance, the laughing part from after Giggle at the Ghosty was recycled when the CMC got laughed at after the concert, and i keep noticing it, it's a bit anoying.
Ok first I never notice the repeated sound clips tell you guys point them out.
ReplyDeleteThe Scooby Doo gag was meh for me mostly cause I expected Pinkie Pie to hop threw unexpec....er you know what I mean!
ReplyDeleteOh, and in the second half of the episode Ponyville became spooky too. There were absolutely no background ponys in town … like a ghost town. @_@

ReplyDeleteTwo explanations come to mind:
A) The Royal Gurads declared martial law while searching for The Royal Pet.
X) They blew most of the budget on princess Celestias hair and had to do those scenes without extras.
