VastaKustutaHah, yeah. I'm sad I didn't really characterize her more, but I kind of want to save that for future chapters. Someone on /co/ suggested characters that start out unlikeable and gradually get likable throughout the story. I'd like to try that with Derpy's mom.
@Poultron
VastaKustutaYeah but you gotta be carful about that. See those characters are created by limiting the readers information of them, thus creating a misconception.
See if you have a character (or the reader) not privy to certain information about another character, you can use that ignorance to draw those other character to be strict or cruel; only to later reveal their past, and thus explain the causes that shape those behaviors.
For as overrated as Amy Tan might be, The Joyluck club was very good example of creating domineering mothers who, though she didn't outright defend, she none the less explained the uptight behavior of. That way, though their daughters didn't subscribe to their mothers views, they none-the-less could make peace with their mothers.
Thankfully the movie is good enough that if you want to skip the book it wont be a huge loss.

VastaKustutaI'll have to check the movie out. It might help me write the character better. And you're right, I do have to be very careful - it's hard to ride the line between likable character and outright bitch with this sort of thing.
A pretty sad story you made here, Poultron. Thinking about continuing it?
VastaKustutaYes I am, but the writing is going slow. I wrote a journal entry about it here:

Congratulations! You've created a contender for the single most hated character in MLP!
