You know one of the weirder complaints I got for one of my fics was that it was a "WAFF" (Warm and Fuzzy Feeling) in that it ended happily and with no repercussions.
ReplyDeleteWell you know what I say? Fuck that. After reading Cupcakes, Three Notes and a handful of other grimdark stories, I think we need a few more "WAFF"s to balance em out.
As for this fic, the ONE thing that irked me is how distinctly different your writing style was from EbonMane's. This doesn't mean either of you 2s writing styles are bad, it's just that trying to read a sequel to some other writers fic by a different writer can be a little hard (I had the same problem with "Reconnection", Fistful's sequel to HFPS's "Severing").
Other then that, great job, and I look forward to more from both of you, TimeDiver and EbonMane.

ReplyDeleteY'know, I tried to come up with words to express how this story made me feel, but this guy articulates it perfectly right here. I'd give you 6/5 stars if I could.
The way this story was written was wonderful. And i agree with Cottonmouth. Moar WAFF fics plz.
ReplyDeleteI considered writing a story like this, but decided against it in the end.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't bother me that EbonMane's fics ended in heartache, it bothers me that the heartache requires an improbably large amount of stupidity and miscommunication to happen.
The reason it is basically true that "love always finds a way" is not because of some force of nature fating love to happen, but because when two people love each other they are going to do everything they can to find a way to get together, and because it's a mutual thing, neither is going to get into each other's way. It takes a very very large number of outside obstacles to keep mutual love down, just because it's an incredibly strong individual motivator.
Really, I think it's almost unjustifiable to have Big Mac and Twilight never get together in such a situation. Unless one says that Big Mac really didn't care about Twilight that much, but the fic didn't give me that impression.
But anyway, this fic here doesn't have that problem, and is a bit more realistic in that way. And I like realistic. I also agree with all the other good folks that WAFF is good, and there needs to be more. Happy endings are nice.
Absolutely fantastic. Big thumbs up to both authors!
ReplyDeleteYesssss. Been waiting for somepony to do a nicer ending for these. Great work!
ReplyDeleteOh, and awww.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteI don't see how Three Notes is grimdark. Especially not on a level comparable to Cupcakes.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteYou are right. Grimdark is not the right word. "Sad" or "depressing" is a better suited word to describe it.
And I must agree with Fistful here. Although I loved "Three Notes" and it left an impact on me, I couldn't stop this nagging feeling that something like that would almost be IMPOSSIBLE to happen.
There is no way in hell that someone can be so shy that they go that many years without telling someone they love them.
Of course both of these stories are great, so I'm just rambling now.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteI interpreted Notes to indicate that Fluttershy confessed to Big Mac before Twilight got up the courage to confess through something less indirect than notes, and after that, she wouldn't have wanted to steal him from her friend.
@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteMaybe. But then you get into the fact that Fluttershy makes Twilight look like a Social Diva, and you have problems.
I guess you could make shit up about how Fluttershy is shy about everything BUT love, but then your taking too many liberties with the character IMO.
It's really up to you to interpret I guess. For me it was unrealistic. Anyways, I need to stop spamming these comments.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteIt's actually more common than you'd think. There's a lot of people out there who will, if you talk to them, tell you about the chances they let slip away because they were too afraid to say anything before the opportunity passed. People get scared and make excuses all the time. All it takes is one little misunderstanding, and all parties move on like it was a lost cause. Whenever someone tells me that love always finds a way, I find myself thinking of my first boyfriend, and the morning that he called me to tell me it was over, because... he didn't actually have an answer. 'I love you. Goodbye.'
But I think we can all agree that, whatever issues you might take on a plausibility front, the emotional weight of Three Notes is not really something to contest. And naturally as soon as I read it I knew somepony would feel the need to write a less soul crushing version. And as it turns out, that was a good thing to do. Sad stories have their place, but warm and loving stories have emotion, too, and they are in no way shape or form inferior.
So yeah. More of this sort of thing would be exceedingly welcome. And well done to the author for putting this one together.
@Phoe
ReplyDeleteThese situations you speak of are almost always examples of one-sided love. Somebody loved somebody else, and let their chance slip away. That happens all the time.
What doesn't happen all the time is when two people both love each other and let each other slip away. I've never personally seen an example of it happening, and it conceptually doesn't seem like a very likely thing.
@Cottonmouth
ReplyDeleteI suppose that's the difference between reality and fiction: Fiction has to make sense.
dawwwwwww
ReplyDeleteaww =3
ReplyDeletenow thats a good way to finish the day ^^ (5/5)
;___: Manly tears.
ReplyDelete*claps wildly, manly tears of happiness streaming from my eyes* Though I greatly enjoyed "Ships That Pass in the Night", I was utterly devastated by how Mac and Twilight did not end up together (also in how the CMC broke up). Therefore, I fully support this fic. Just beautiful.
ReplyDelete"Ships" and "Notes" both fucking broke my heart. This is like a huge metaphorical Band-Aid or something mushy like that. Glad EbonMane decided to take pity on us all and endorse this.
ReplyDeleteYES! Now THIS is how the story SHOULD have ended! (... XD *Just had an image of 'How it Should have Ended' from YouTube doing this fic as an animation! XD)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the AWESOME fic! 8D

I actually liked both "Three Notes" and "Communication". They were each beautiful in their own way. Of course, I'll probably break my brain trying to imagine them both being true at the same time...
