G1 MLP was my introduction to fantasy, years before I read anything by Tolkien. I'm under no illusion that it compares favorably to the better modern cartoons, but I maintain it was among the better 80s ones. FIM, though, is the first show in the franchise SINCE G1 that doesn't look to me like a defilement of the original, fairly dark show.
The answer is "Yes". I was like 0.5 year in ponies before show was aired. But that only means, that I loved the show after first pictures in the net - exactly last summer. And Toy prototypes were so badass and more accurate! I miss them ;_; Celestia there had full set of armor and eyes like "OBEY".
And I get into ponies while I was forcing "Rainbow beholdeers (further - rainbow unicorns)" mem onto one forum. I made a research about ponies and here I am! I like ponies!
Nope, if it wasn't for FiM and the writing and wonderful art, I would never have any interest in ponies whatsoever. Nothing in the older ones remotely appear to me. Tried watching an episode of those "baby ponies" on Pensive's channel and stopped after 5 minutes because how utterly awful it was; it was buried somewhere in the deepest part of the uncanny valley as well.
I wasn't before the present generation of MLP, and I kinda doubt I'd be able to get back into the previous incarnations now.
Neither the designs or cartoon nor toys do anything for me without the new look. Even though it was partially the fanart of a 3.5 design that got me into this one.
@Star Whistle Lol. And I actua;;y very love horses (and zebras), They're like my second most loved creatures after cats. But Real life ponies is like a parodies on horses. I do not like real ponies. But Mah little ponies is okay because it's cartoon ))
I come from a history of G1, but I can agree G2-3 were pretty much an affront to ponies.
G1's pilot episode was what I always imagined ponies to be and how I always played with them when I was a wee filly, so I'm disappointed that FiM didn't ultimately didn't keep up the atmosphere of episodes 1 and 2. When I was a little girl, THAT's exactly the kind of show I wanted, and a part of me is sad that this generation may also suffer that pang of wanting and never getting it.
Still, FiM is well written and makes itself work as a slice of life, so I'll be over here eating it up.
Anyway, I was not at all into MLP before FiM. I've never been into action figures & their respective TV shows much at all. The '90s TMNT was the most recent toy show I watched. Never cared for Transformers, G.I. Joe, et al. Unless we're talking Fensler Films.
G3 and 3.5 hate is quite fine by me (I mean in those cartoons teh Ponies must have been bloody well lobotomized!)... but G1 hate? Every second episode the Ponies were one false step away from being enslaved/exterminated or conquered... Sun_tzu over at rpg.net provides quite a nice summery (http://forum.rpg.net/showpost.php?p=11448858&postcount=72): "Dream Valley is constantly out to kill you. It's like Australia, Sunnydale and Ravenloft met at an orgy, and spawned this abberation, then woke up in the morning and freaked out when they realized Care-A-Lot and Disneyland had also participated."
As one of those old schoolers, I'd like to say I have no complaints about you 'new' folks. I'm just glad pony's getting some love again with this series.
As an old lady with love for G1, I think every new ponyfan should watch the first MLP movie. Just watch it. See how far we've come, but also see how awesome it was to watch ponies get turned into hideous monsters by a black rainbow wielding enemy.
@Anonymous I'm glad you suggested that! Afte rreading your comment, I went and checked it out. There were small things which kinda made me feel a little confused (RANDOM PILE OF HAY BREAKS FALL) but for the most part I was surprised at how it's considerably darker than what I expected of MLP. It gave me a different way of looking at the pilot episode of FiM, which makes me like it more and helps me see where the show could have gone from there.
Also, it was just cool for me to see a different take on Spike. Totally worth watching as a new fan who only knew FiM.
Well, I love all things colorful and 80s and animal-related, so naturally I've always LIKED the entire My Little Pony franchise. Unfortunately, they weren't very popular when I was growing up and I never actually owned the toys or got to see much of the cartoon versions. I knew about them mostly from having read some storybooks and seen Valentine card boxes and such. Since then I have seen much more of the old cartoons and movies, and yes, some of it can be quite great. Much of it I really truly adore (wahoo for Draggle!) FiM is different, though, and friendlier to older and more diverse audiences while still being perfect for young girls. It's truly addiction-worthy for anyone of any age.
So, yeah, I do wish that the ponies had been among my toys when I was little, but, I feel more than fortunate enough for having collected Puppy in my Pockets (dogs, and fishes, are my favorite animals), Lisa Frank stuff, Polly Pockets, Littlest Pet Shops, Melanie's Mall, various Barbie playsets and other types of dollhouses, buildings, vehicles, accessories, places/businesses, etc., Match Box/Hot Wheels/Micro Machines vehicles, Star Castles, Pound Puppies, etc., etc. *sigh* It'd take all day at least to try and name all the toys I ever had...;__;

Still that's alot more people then I thought there would be
ReplyDeleteI liked the first generation because they were ridiculously chubbers... but I've skipped every other generation except the oldest one.
ReplyDeleteThe last I watched was this episode...

Proving that earth, unicorn and pegasus types all had the same kind of magic back then... except they were all chubby reflecting humanity in the USA.
A JPEG of text. With heavy JPEG artifacts. Argh, why is there so little love for PNGs?!

ReplyDeleteThis maybe offtopic but are you sure everything is alright with the pageview counter?
ReplyDeleteI really hope it's not someone auto-refreshing.

ReplyDeleteIt's actually way under the pageviews google analytics says I have, so I think it's alright.
It fits the 5 pageviews per visit average pretty well at least.
Not only did I have no interest in MLP before Friendship is Magic, I also actively disliked horses, ponies, zebras, and other animals built like them.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what a quality show can do ^_^
@Star Whistle
ReplyDeleteThat's funny. So did I. And I still do... these ponies don't look anything like real ones though.

Still hoping for a favorite song poll eventually.

TBH, I played an MLP MUCK before FiM, but it was very brief (some administrative screwjob) and I was only there because my GF was.
ReplyDelete@Tekaramity I can already tell you how that poll is gonna go. Winter wrap up first followed by Art of the dress.

This one has it in better quality (and all in one segment).
ReplyDelete@Purple
ReplyDeleteThat's loads better! Thanks.
I can't decide if I want to rewatch it right now or not though. Bookmarking it though, definitely.
