This is awesome. Rarity is fat, but this is cosplay we are discussing so fat chicks are just an expectation.
ReplyDeleteI showed those pictures to a friend the other day, since she's debating on doing her own MLP FIM cosplay, and we both agreed that Twilight girl's wig is really iffy, while Rainbow Dash girl's wig is fantastic.

Sure, she's not the skinniest girl, but to me, that shows all the more devotion to her fandom. Sure, she'll get shitty, misogynistic comments for it - see above - but she's (presumably) in love with this show enough that it doesn't matter. I think she's terribly brave; it's easy for a skinny chick to show up to a con in a bikini top and get cheered, but the minute any overweight girl (or person, really) tries to cosplay, all anyone ever says is insults.
In the end, they're ponies. Ponies have always been pudgy. This isn't like anorexia-inducing animu where you might get bitched out for not being skinny enough; we're talking about goddamn gajinka-versions of four-legged equines. None of it's going to be "canon-certified," unless you get a fursuit and shrink yourself to about a 10-year-old's size.
I am now a sad. Why would anyone degrade Rarity like that? She's a lady dammit, and she should be treated as such.

Christ on a pogo stick... what is UP with all the vicious comments about the Rarity cosplayer? Good fucking lord, it's this sick society's "bony is ideal beauty" paradigm (and the dickwads who repeat and reinforce it as gospel truth) that results in so many women with severe psychological problems and eating disorders. Living in constant dissatisfaction with oneself, until they lose that perpetual "last 10 pounds" or whatever, is a torturous, unhealthy and god-awful way to go through life.

I neither find the look of someone who is as skinny as a twig, nor the look of someone who is a bit on the larger side attractive.

These girls get HUUUUUGE props from me! Those costumes are pretty awesome, and they have the attitudes down pat as well. I especially like the way the Applejack, Rainbow Dash, & Twilight Sparkle getups came out. And Fluttershy. Wonder where they got those ears! :D

I can't believe there are disparaging remarks about a picture of REAL PEOPLE doing a terrific cosplay and having fun. How messed up. They're all good-looking (I'm straight and I can say that), and who would want to find nasty comments from some random bozos on their pictures? Welcome to the world, baby girls; this is how real people look!
Anyway, the only thing that keeps me from coloring my hair wildly is the fact that I'd have to bleach it first, and I just dun wanna do that to my naturally bright red curls...:< I do put semi-visible streaks and dyed real-human-hair streaks in, though. xD Especially when I straighten it so that the former are a bit more noticeable and the latter match the the style. But at any rate, I would totally dress as Rainbow Dash, hair and all. For the sake of cosplay, it would be well worth it--if I couldn't get a good enough wig.

ReplyDeleteCosplayers frequently don't properly evoke the character they're dressed as. Frequently folks are forgiving if they find the cosplayer attractive, and unforgiving if they don't.
ReplyDeleteTo my eyes, the Pinkie Pie cosplayer most evokes her character, followed by the Rainbow Dash cosplayer (in the first pic), followed by the Rarity cosplayer (in the first pic). Of course, all we're seeing them do is pose for stills, so it's hard to judge anything...
Anyways, respect for the cosplayers.

I myself am looking to cosplay Rarity and I am not the skinniest stick in the bush lol And after seeing some of the stinging comments here I was actually starting to think twice about portraying a character I absolutely love. But again thanks to you I realized how stupid I was for allowing such shallow people to sway me.
