Nah, That's not even close to furries fursonas - or how they call their creepy stuff. It's much more like a standard Anime cosplaying, and I like it. <3
I once worked at an art gallery where someone had some fursuit masks on display. And they weren't tastefully done or anything either, they were the most horrible neon colours, and the facial features were cartoony and awful as hell.
As far as cosplay goes, this is actually quite good, and nowhere near anything "furry" at all.
Furries are fans of artwork featuring anthropomorphic animals, especially in animation. They often express this by creating original artwork featuring characters from various media as well as original characters. And since they're adults, this means that there's sexual content in addition to less-controversial fan-generated artwork.

And since they're adults, this means that there's sexual content in addition to less-controversial fan-generated artwork.
Some furries are highly defensive of their hobby, and tend to try to distance themselves from those they've deemed less savory, usually subgroups and fringe elements of their own fandom.

Am I the only one having trouble picking out much of a difference?

I realize that this won't change anyone's mind and I'm wasting keystrokes, but the disdain for furries around here seems pretty silly, it makes about as much sense as something like corn farmers despising wheat farmers. It only serves to alienate fellow (or potential) MLP fans, and to an outsider, the two are indistinguishable.
I could dress up as Big Mac but that would involve growing a mullet, standing in the sun until I'm as red as a lobster (so about 1 hour) and wearing a yoke....
We're bronies! We believe in friendship and love! Except for those furries over there, we hate those guys.
Freakin hilarious. My Little Pony *IS FURRY*, furry means anthropomorphic animals, bronies = furries even if you haven't realized it yet or won't admit it.
Lion King, Balto, and MLP, all furry, with intelligent quadruped animals that talk. sorry to inform
brony culture may be different from furry culture, or the caricature that troll culture sees furry culture as, but MLP:FiM is absolutely furry. And the hugs-and-love-and-positivity of bronies a) is in itself reminiscent of the mushiest of furry-lifestyler talk and b) rings a little hollow when in the next post they bust out crap about "homosex + perverts" and "gtfo" and blah blah, going back to normal 4chan-style hatred when an out-group is discussed.
Anthropomorphic doesn't mean bipedal or having hands. It means 'possessing human characteristics.'
You know, like talking, using tools, building a town, and otherwise being sapient. The term even applies whenever people apply human reasons to things their pets do.
Anthropomorphic includes Egyptian Mythology, Aesop's Fables, Native American Spirit Lore, the talking door knob from Alice in Wonderland, and the Brave Little Toaster. And MLP.
This is awesome cosplay. Tasteful, well-done, cute... But, goddamit.
About whether it or MLP in general is furry, here's my general advice on semantical classification of such issues from a professional furfag:
NO ONE CARES!
It's just a label. It doesn't really exist. You like what you like and don't what you don't, no need to pigeonhole your personal taste. It doesn't matter!
Besides, it's only a matter of time before people will start calling bronies creepy man-child perverts because of all the porn and shipping, so put on your jacket and get ready to join the club of uselessly trying to prove people otherwise.
Announcing yourself a furry on the Internet is like shouting "I LOVE SEX" in public. It's true, there's nothing innately wrong about it, but it will probably freak quite a few people out and draw negative attention to yourself.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're a pervert or have an obsession, but humans jump to conclusions. Best just keep quiet.
MLP:FiM is anthropomorphic, because anything non-human given human characteristics is anthropomorphic. Milk & Cheese (one of my favorite comics) is technically anthropomorphic.
Would I call it "furry", no, but I can defiantly see the crossover in interest, many of the bronies here probably have some associated with furry fandom, as probably a large chuck of /co/ considering what I have seen.
No one is exclusively one fandom anyway. I never known anyone who is exclusively into furry, or anime, or Star Wars, or Pokemon, or Ponies. Most people here are probably involved in some level in multiple fandoms.
Applause, and honestly most of the people who are part of fandom X (furry, FIM, anime, Science Fiction, whatever) defy the various stereotypes place upon them anyway. Usually those who make the stereotype claims actually have no knowledge of what those fandoms are really like, they just sheeple along with the put downs to look a little less nerdy themselves.
Its all geeks and nerds making fun of other geeks and nerds.
Man I must be confused. I always thought furry just meant "omg personified animals are cool!"
But then I guess that makes almost everyone in the entire world a furry because you can't walk two steps without someone personifying an animal to some degree for their own amusement.
Guys, you need to chillax with the anti-furry stuff. I was a furry long before I was a filly, and I'm not like the stereotypes. I'm not a kinky pervert. I probably spend a lot less time "clopping" than you do. Oh, and I have a job, have my own apartment, and probably earn more than pretty much anyone else here. Are there furries who fit the stereotype? Yes. However, not all of us do. Prejudice is very much not in the brony/pony spirit.
How far has this Derpy thing spread? I know it started on 4chan, but she even has the mail thing down. She might be reading this thread right now, chuckling to herself and blushing.
And yeah, 'nother furry here. (Who honestly thought that a large portion of this show's fanbase WOULDN'T be?) I'm proud of it, too. I won't be misjudged as a nymphomaniacal pervert. Furriness is just one aspect of who I am. Yes, that's right; we walk among you, at your schools, in your places of business, in your very own hometown...and you'd probably never know it unless the subject somehow arose. ;)
for crying out loud... I'm furry and i'm not into suits. Suits are for fun, entertainment, mascots ...etc. Very small percentage is in sex stuff, mainly since suits are expensive and also sex in latex suit its not very pleasant experience.Any suit with ears, tail is also fursuit.
I just like art and also, since furry is every animal that talks, builds or have any characteristic of human..."sadly" for your ears ponies are furry, not 100% but 35%.It would be 50% if there was human to speak to,like Scooby Doo.Bugs Bunny is somewhat 75%,Minerva Mink&Lola Bunny well...90%.
@anonymous 6:31pm you sir win the internets. Brohoofs all around. tho this really means i have to get working on my own mlp cosplays. trixie here I go!
Gijinka always brings up some stupid furry discussion. It's bad enough that we're hypocrites (love and tolerate the shit out of you as long as you're not a furry!), but let's at least know what we're looking at, guys. Come on.
I just want to clarify a few things on "furry". Furry == anthropomorphic animal; the ponies from MLP:FiM are exactly just that. However, a brony is specifically a fan of MLP; to call a brony a furry would imply that they may be a fan for anthropomorphic animal characters in general. Moreover, to be labelled as a furry (as in furry fan) often means some kind of participation in some social group that constitutes the fandom (where that be online or off). A brony may participate in the MLP fandom, that doesn't mean they will participate in the furry fandom (or fandom for some other furry-related product). MLP fans worship one product, the furry fandom worships the kind of characters that are in MLP. Nonetheless, a brony could be called a furry (even if they're not interested in other products featuring anthropomorphic animals), whereas a furry cannot be called a brony unless they are one (i.e. interested in MLP); the two subcultures are compatible with each other but are not equal.
Here's a bit about me:
"I was born in the 1980s, I remember MLP quite well, my (older, though young-at-the-time) sister used to play with the toys and watch the show. I don't remember much of that show, myself (I was more interested in Looney Tunes cartoons). I like MLP:FiM, I do not currently participate in any fandom but I have my interests in what comes from the furry fandom and MLP (plus its fandom).
I also witnessed something called "furry" on the web, back then it was just like brony culture now. Although, the web was much smaller and largely appreciated more so ever by geeks. Most geeks were insane worshippers of comics (ranging PG to adult) from various genres, and largely appreciated/talked about animations more than most would. And they put that right on the internet, in newsgroups, etc."
Whenever you hear the word "furry" you imagine either incredibly childish fursuiters or sex obsessed pseudo-zoophiliacs who obsess over comics such as those by Jay Naylor or perhaps (going back) the Tijuana Bible comics.
For the "furry is childish" stereotype - we can say that, although we try to anthropomorphize animals all the time, funny, talking or civilised animals is most associated as "being for children". However, the likes of Bugs Bunny, etc, were originally aimed at adults to demonstrate political satire. Then we have civilised animals in fantasy, again, such characters were usually featured in products that were aimed at all ages. There's also funny animal cartoons, anime and comics for the coming of age / young adult, these can easily be followed by older adults, as well; and a young child, like when it comes to the likes of Bugs Bunny, would probably not really understand humor involved. Intellectual and humanoid female animals were largely aimed at an older audience, such characters, dating back to the 1920s and before were often sexualised in comics (just see Omaha the Cat Dancer (as you can see by its presentation, it was influenced by the sci-fi pornography movement at the time) - most of such characters, like funny animals were bipedal. In for example, Disney animation there was also a large amount of anthropomorphic animals, in animations such as Anastasia, The Lion King, Oliver & Co and 101 Dalmatians, the animals were anthropomorphic but retained their natural morphology (i.e. quadruped animals were quadrupedal; bipedal animals were bipedal, etc), just as the likes of the characters in Robin Hood and Alice In Wonderland were often bipedal civilised or funny animals even if naturally they were quadruped. (My Little Pony and MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a cartoon/animation that features anthropomorphic animal characters (or more specifically "talking animals") that were usually quadrupedal. For the "sex" stereotype - anthropomorphic animals have been depicted sexually since the beginning of time, no doubt due to that fact certain species have more appealing advantages in some respects in comparison to humans. Nonetheless, anthropomorphic animals have been equally depicted sexually as much as they have not. For many zoophiliacs, anthropomorphic animals are appealing sexually, as well. When I was a teenager (this was in the late 90s), I noticed non-geeks started to appear on the web, these people (geeks included) realised they could express their interests without being monitored (at least, so they hope), this included sexually. About the same time IRCs such as YiffNet started to appear ("yiff" never meant furry porn back then), people there would rarely hold an adult discussion, although there has been few - generally there was people who stayed away from the adult subculture, and others that were closely binded to it. Nonetheless, zoophiles in the 2000s heavily pushed the demand for anthropomorphic pornography into the fandom, with image boards pressing an outward image that furry was all about "humanoid female animals", "japanese kemono" and "petting zoo people" pornography. While only in very small groups, people still do press furry pornography on image boards, especially where trolls frequent (i.e. 4chan, Second Life, Tumblr, etc), this has attracted not just haters of furdom and furry porn, but even more deviants into the fandom. Furries will often make jokes about furry sexuality and may not necessarily even participate in anything sexual, themselves. In amateur/fandom art communities such as FurAffinity, some artists make furry porn to exploit the popularity available in the fandom, others do to charge a price for a commission service that would otherwise not exist. Many people cosplay as animals, especially in otaku culture and its erotic "hentai" subculture, it doesn't make them furries, since applying humans with animal attributes it zoomorphism; a furry character is an animal with human attributes and the aesthetics are often different.
So you can't really automatically consider furry "necessarily" childish nor "mature". And to add, "furry" was selected as the preferential nickname for the fandom for anthropomorphic animals, it doesn't mean to neglect fur-less animals, just colloquially it became more popular (such as due to how short it was and how easy it was to type thanks to how close the letters f+u+r+r+y are on the keyboard (in relation to say, "anthro")).
"Furry" is a web term that either refers to anthropomorphic animal characters (funny, civilised, talking, intellectual animals, etc) or the fans/roleplayers of such characters (roleplaying may be considered zoomorphism by some).

ReplyDeleteFurry means an enjoyment of anthropomorphic critters. Pony falls into that. Niche, perhaps, but ...

it just surprises me to see furry-hate coming from folks, then scroll down a couple posts to see folks complaining about how much 4chan hates them.
You'd think Friendship is Magic would rub off enough for folks to see that treating others with kindness and understanding is a pretty good idea.

ReplyDeleteHey, Furry. From one furry to another, shut up, keep your furry shit off of this non furry site, and fucking deal with it.
