Well, in only one case was it ever done deliberately. The rest was just a matter of mingling populations.
If Native Americans had ever evolved beyond the fairly basic type of lifestyle they had, they would have had their own diseases to kill us with too. We just had far more of them because we had domesticated animals for a long, long time... if animals are domesticated long enough, diseases can pass between them and humans, and that's how many of the really virulent diseases got started.
Because Native Americans didn't really domesticate animals that much (they pretty much either hunted them if they were tasty or killed them if they were dangerous), not only did they not have near as many diseases to share with their new palefaced buddies, but their populations hadn't gone through being hit by such diseases to force their immune systems to toughen up.
@Anonymous They didn't just hunt animals if they were tasty, they used the whole damn thing. Waste not, want not or whatever. The same goes for the dangerous animals, but only when they posed immediate threat.
I'm gonna digress here, though. It's kind of obvious, though. If everyone acted like the Native Americans, life would be a lot better, since they wanted to live with nature. But then we'd all be living inside the carcasses of dead animals, essentially. The Europeans were like the polar opposite, wanting to beat the FUCK out of nature, all in God's name. That "nature should bow down to us" personality the European's exhibited, however, led to all this new-fangled technology. And, indirectly, MLP:FiM.
So in retrospect, both cultures sucked ass in certain respects, but excelled in others. That's why we have to kill each other so often, if the best aspects of those cultures were to join together, that nation would become as advanced as half the species in Star Wars while everyone else lived in shitty mud huts.
I think the line was meant to be a pun -- she said "hoof IN mouth" rather than "hoof AND mouth" (which is what the real disease is), which is probably a reference to "putting your foot in your mouth".
Actually, Hoof and Mouth aka Foot and Mouth Disease does not normally afflict equine species. It mainly afflicts cloven hooved species - bovine, sheep, goats, and pigs.
Also, Foot and Mouth isn't very deadly either. It just makes the animals morbidly sick for a period of time. The reason the nations of the world are working so hard to eradicate it is because of the sizable production losses to the meat and dairy industries.
It would have been less dark if the Buffalo in the back wasn't dead but merely sick.
But I don't feel so bad, personally I don't like them Buffalo. Although I'm curious if most people feel the same or not?
I feel the buffalo are the "bad guys", as they resorted to violence as the aggressors. I also note that the Buffalo were not going to go through with it until they heard Pinkie singing "sharing and caring". They didn't attack Pinkie, but rather the town....this makes me think they didn't like the concept of sharing and caring. The ponies, while being stubborn jerks, were only defending the town from an imminent attack. In the end, the Buffalo are extorting the ponies for pies as "protection money". It would be very different if the Buffalo actually helped the ponies with the apple harvesting.
True the Ponies took the Buffalo's land, but you don't resort to violence just like that.
(Note: I'm viewing the Buffalo as only what they are in the MLP series, a separate entity than anything they may seem to correspond to in our world).
I'd like to say something about that comment up there about nature bowing down in Gods name, I'd like to clarify that we are suppose to take care of the world and wile it was created for us that doesn't mean we kill it like we have been doing...(people do all sort of crazy shit and blame it on God) Also this isn't meant to start an argument, if you don't agree, and or believe, that's fine it's just what I believe and what's in the Bible. Im all about conserving the jungles and animals and such and Im sure a lot of you will agree with me on that. Also on a side note because buffalo have cloven hoofs they are unclean...so if there are Jewish ponies are they racist?
No don't you get it? It's not hoof and mouth disease.
The Appleosians just cut a fake deal with the buffalo, tricking them. They aren't gonna feed them for nothing. So they say they'll cut down a path through the orchard and give them pies that they didn't work for.
They do give them the pies, but tainted with poison. Then when all the buffalo are dead they replant the trees that were chopped down and problem solved.
I like how this comic generated so many word-wall comments about Europeans vs. Native Americans and everything, and I didn't even get it the first time I read it.
Now, I don't agree entirely with either of the above comments like native Americans striving for "harmony with nature", that certainly wasn't their main goal. However, buffalo in particular was a lot more appreciated and buffalo parts were utilized in many ways in their culture, while for the newcomers they were just animals to hunt for sport. I also disagree with the impliation that being vulnerable to European diseases was somehow their fault for being so "backward" - they certainly didn't ask to be introduced to them, or European animals. We did and do have a tendency to take our animals and crops with us wherever we move (some voluntarily, some, like pests ans weeds, involuntarily), often disregarding the effect they will have on the native flora and fauna. Wildlife preservation wasn't actually a priority until the recent times.
Anyway, this comic is quite clever, and I did wonder about the possible parallels in that episode. (For example, we do not see Celestia at all, but it is hard not to associate her with the British royalty of the 18th-19th centuries. Many jokes have been made about Equestria apparently being a socialistic dictatorship, and here we see that they are openly practicing settler colonialism as well, sometimes even at the expense of ingoring claims for the land from earlier natives.)
OK, that's overthinking a simple show, but you wouldn't mind kids thinking a bit on those lines, right?

...Wait, how'd I get into this subject?
"That line in the song was pretty random!"

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!
