• Poll Results: Favorite Story Type

Looks like even though most of you want to be ponies irl, you still have normal taste when it comes to stories.

    1. I'm actually a bit surprised at the outcome of this. Since the success (and by success, I mean popular word of mouth) of Severing was enormous, I thought for sure that Grimdark would place higher on this poll.

Not to mention that the majority of "normal" stories are easily forgettable and tend to swirl together in my head.

Thats because there's just that many more normal stories than grimdark ones. There are well written ones and the well written ones are better than shipping or grimdark fics because they actually feel at place within the MLP world. I wasn't surprised by the poll at all. Most people just like stories that fill in the missing pieces of the parts of the show we don't or have yet to see.

    3. Normal is... Normal. It's a pretty wide range of interests. Backstory, sidestory, alternate episode. So it's actually a few different groups.

Shipping is iffy. It fulfills a niche, and if it's not the niche you subscribe to, often it comes off bad just because you can't accept the paring that the plot is based around. It's easy to offend your target audience.

Grimdark is the hardest of all. If you do it right, most of your target audience is going to hate you personally. If you do it wrong it's just all degrees of fail. And so it's the hardest to find an audience that's happy with it, as the intent is to sadden the reader.

I'm surprised the Grimdark is higher then 10% personally. Everything else seems up to par.

    4. Grimdark and ponies is kind of redundant.

    5. I do not know, where to post this sort of suggestion. But can this fic get on the blog too?

What is the purpose of art?
Wikipedia says "Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items ... in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect."

Making people sad is still art. Making people angry, feel the need to take action, or altering the way they see the universe is still art.

It's hard to be emotionally attached to something that hurts you, and the most effective grimdark hurts.

    9. Not for being out of the chorus, but I'd like to see more darker stories (even thow I really liked the ''normal'' ones too) or just more action oriented, just like the pilot.

Ps: what's the meaning of Grimdark?

      Google, right over there: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Grimdark

Grimdark is an adjective derived from the tagline for Warhammer 40k, which states that "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war."

    11. I'm really surprised by this. I don't read much fanfiction, but most of what I hear is "grimdark grimdark grimdark grimdark grimdark!" I've always imagined the graph the other way around.
